Broken Wings hosts successful Golf Day

GOLF DAY WINNERS: Andries Hefer, Graham Brabson, Sheryl Swanepoel, Kyle van der Merwe and Adrian Brabson On 30 October, Broken Wings Association for Adults with Disabilities, hosted their fundraiser Golf Day at the Glenvista Country Club. At the prize-giving event they also had an auction and raffle draw which helped to

raise more funds for the Association. Sheryl Swanepoel from Broken Wings, would like to thank everyone for opening their hearts and hands towards the Association, as the Golf Day was a huge success this year.

300 balloons for children’s home

POWER OF HELIUM: 300 balloons were released into the air, in aid of Siyabonga Children’s Home. On Sunday 26 October, the Dutch Reformed Church in South Crest raised funds in aid of the Siyabonga Children’s Home. The home has 30 children aged from three months to 18 years, and is situated on the

border of Alberton and Dinwiddie. Funds were raised by selling helium balloons at R10 each. The church aimed to sell 300 balloons, and after the Sunday service the 300 balloons were released into the air. It was a joyous occasion in aid of a great organization.

SUCCESS: Sheryl Swanepoel and Jacques Botha from Gay Transport “We would like to thank all our Golf Day sponsors and players for the support on the day, a big thank you to Jacques Botha from Gay Transport for his help and assistance,” Sheryl said.

Joy at Elandsvallei Home for the Aged

Hierdie week groet ek tame TIMES, en dit maak hierdie dan my laaste uitgawe. Ek bedank graag elke persoon saam wie ek gewerk het gedurende my paar maande by die tame TIMES.

How your water bill is calculated tame TIMES has received numerous enquiries regarding residents’ water and sewage bill calculations. On your municipal account it may appear that each month they charge a different amount per kilolitre of water and sewage used, but there is a logical explanation. According to the EMM, water is levied on a sliding scale. The more water one uses, the more expensive it becomes. Also note that the below are affected by the number of days in the given billing cycle i.e date from the previous reading to the current reading.

The EMM has also advised that there is no separate meter for sewer readings. The residential sewer line uses water to function and therefore a separate tariff is applied to calculate sewage for the same readings obtained from your water meter. “Water and sewer levies/charges are adversely affected by the number of days in the given billing cycle and it must be noted that there is no set price per kilolitre on both water and sewer but they are both levied on a sliding scale,” the EMM said.

Builder silent about collapse Stephanie Conradie

Continued from page 1. Romburg’s legal representative, Advocate Piet Pistorius intervened and said that his client would not answer any questions and that he had been informed of his rights. Maphaha said that in terms of section eight of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993, the contractors did not prepare a risk management assessment for the job that they were going to do. Three of the employees who were injured during the incident also testified, and according to Maphaha the construction workers had indicated that Romburgh was their employer. The workers also said that they had never undergone health and safety training. Maphaha said Romburgh had also failed to inform the Labour Department about the construction, as required by law. The inquiry continued on Thursday when the engineer who designed the house, Ranjan Galal, testified. He, too, refused to answer questions posed to him during the inquiry, saying he “reserve the right to remain silent and not incriminate himself.” Galal’s lawyer, Robert Krombein from NRFSA Attorneys, said his client had not received engineering reports and this was substantially and procedurally unfair to his client, therefore “my client has the right to remain silent when asked questions.” Phumudzo Maphaha cautioned witnesses against remaining silent, saying: “the right to remain silent has limitations. I will hate to invoke my right as a Commissioner to force out

information that we require as a Commission. If we are unable to get information, this will render the inquiry useless.” Galal did, however, answer the question about the size of the pillars and the slab. He said these were 340mm, against the slab that weighed 84 000kg. Maphaha told Galal that he found out that the columns on site were either under-designed or under constructed to carry a weight of 84 000 kg. “There was also no proper foundation to carry the design, and that is the conclusion I observed. That is what I saw and what you also saw on the ground,” Maphaha said. The Inquiry also planned to interview the owner of the collapsed house, Gregory Cumming, but Maphaha said he would no longer be interviewing the client (Cumming). The Commission requested Cumming to furnish an affidavit confirming whether he hired the contractor and the engineer. They also wanted proof of payment for work done. The Inquiry was set to sit until 7 November but ended abruptly on Thursday. “We will use evidence led yesterday and today to compile a report, and evidence gathered on site to compile a report and make recommendations that we will forward to the National Director of Public Prosecutions,” he said. The Meyersdal Structural Collapse Incident Inquiry is expected to complete its report with recommendations within 60 days.

SANBS needs blood The South African National Blood Service relies greatly on members of the public who meet the requirements of being a blood donor to ensure that there is always adequate blood available in the country for patients in need of transfusions. The Alberton City Donor Centre has seen a decline in the number of donors in recent months and this has had a huge impact on the available blood stocks. As we approach the festive season, we know that stocks will continue to drop and we are therefore sending out a plea to all those who are eligible to come through to Alberton City Donor Centre (cnr Voortrekker & Du Plessis Rd, Alberton, Entrance 4, opposite Telkom) to donate blood.

The power of media

Prof. Shikha Vyas-Doorgapersad writes:

Tame TIMES published coverage in previous editions in the JHB South region, regarding the Heal Humanity: A Love, Care and Share (LovCaSh) Initiative. I have received several calls from the community members of that region offering assistance in my charity work. This is the power of media and I am grateful to tame TIMES for the support. The mechanics will do a thorough check of the vehicle which will include a road test and an assessment of the following parts: • Lights • Suspension • Drive lines • Brakes • Tyres, including the spare and tools • Fluid levels • Wipers and windscreen • V Belts, and • Exhaust. If a problem is identified, the mechanic will be able to advise the vehicle owner and provide a quote for repairs needed. No repairs will be done without the consent of the owner, he explains.

“Don’t let vehicle issues ruin your holiday. Get your vehicle holiday-ready now,” advised Les Mc Master, Chairman of MIWA. For a list of MIWA workshops, vehicle owners can visit the MIWA site: www.miwasa.com.

The scorers must note the following: the time the ball is taken and the number of overs when the ball replaced. The ball is a vital piece of equipment and must be protected against vandalism and illegal tampering by the players. Therefore the ball must be under the control of the umpires at all times when drinking, while wickets are falling, during tea or lunch intervals or any time there is an injury to a player or umpire. Wispeco won the Alrode Industrial League for the second consecutive year after playing a brilliant all-or-nothing game against Henkel on Friday 24 October in Katlehong. The Alrode Industrial League is a football league of the Alrode Industrial Football Association that is played by companies every Friday afternoon. Wispeco came into the final game three points behind rival Everite which was at the top of the log having nothing to lose. Winning the game against Henkel would put Wispeco level with Everite and Wispeco then would take the cup based on the goal difference. Wispeco came out swinging, scoring an early goal against Henkel and showing the drive needed to win the cup with confident play. Henkel, however, seeking to deny them victory, turned on the pressure, creating good play and forcing mistakes in the opposing team. The pressure paid off near the half-time mark when some good interplay between the Henkel men saw then finding the back of the net. Half-time was quiet as Wispeco tried to rally after the intense pressure put up by Henkel in the second half after a disappointing first half. “These guys are playing their hearts out,” said Reggie Mkhize, chairperson of Alrode Industrial Football Association. “They will pick themselves up because they are carrying the pride of their company with them.” The second half saw a newly invigorated Wispeco team come out with guns blazing and playing for a win. No quarter was given as the Wispeco team saw the cup before their eyes and campaigned unrelentingly to score the winning goal. Their dedication proved fruitful when they powered a shot past the Henkel goalie to secure a 2-1 win. Wispeco walked away holding the floater trophy high and R9 200 in prize money. Everite United and Rheem won the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Sarah-Kate Scott, Mrs South Africa, who was the celebrity representing the National Horse Trust, was so overcome that she shed tears while congratulating Bezanova and Marwing. The remarkable aspect of the PEPCM is that all 16 charities walked away with a share of the R600 000 that is set aside for the charities. Next year that figure will be a cool R1 million. Glorious Jet did tame TIMES and Brian and Juanita Mitchell proud by coming in 7th and winning Thembakazi Primary Aftercare Centre R28 000.
