Brackenhurst Primary on the map with e-learning Stephanie Conradie stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za On 1 October, Brackenhurst Primary School hosted their first e-learning open day, making them the first public primary school in South Africa to go the full e-learning route. The school invited all parents and other stakeholders to an informative morning to understand and experience first-hand what e-learning in a South African public school entails. Ms Anne Burger, principal at Brackenhurst Primary, was described as the engine behind the e-learning project and her vision for the school. “We know where the school is going,” Ms Burger said. “In the beginning of 2012 we developed a three-year strategy and by the end of 2014 we are right on track.” By implementing the e-learning system in the school, they are keeping abreast with technology and living up to their mission statement of “Passionately educating today, for tomorrow.” The school now has two fully equipped computer labs with internet access and children attend computer lessons. Teachers are also being trained on an ongoing basis.

P3 E-XCITED: Learners enjoy interactive e-learning at Brackenhurst Primary. From January 2014 up until September 2014, the implementation of the e-learning programme took place. Currently 80% of Grade 4 – 7 learners have tablets, but they have ensured that the remaining 20% are not falling behind, as they are still receiving hard copies of handbooks and other study material. They are pulling out all the stops to try to get tablets into the hands of the

The school received 40 tablets from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE); however, the school was broken into and all 40 tablets were stolen. “We are in the process of seeing how we can solve this challenge,” Ms. Burger said. The school found that the e-learning system has learners more involved in lessons and that they enjoy the activities and assignments.

Early Christmas in Germiston Germiston based company, Kenako Glass Brokers, in partnership with Bethesda House and Santa Shoebox, has donated 118 gift boxes for children aged 6 months to 14 years. The boxes contain many of the basic necessities children require, including toiletries, stationery and a facecloth. The children also each received toys and some sweets to enjoy. The project started when Kenako decided to give back to the community, and especially children, after their golf day. The project was headed and supported by Mark van Rooyen, head of Kenako Glass. “It was quite a challenge,” said Tammy Westenberg, spokesperson for Kenako Glass. “We kept on making more and

more, with the original plan almost doubling - but it was a project that inspired all our workers to give hope to children in need.” Bethesda House is a shelter for abused women and children. Samantha Moagi, an outreach worker for the shelter, explained that a sense of ownership means the world to these children. “Just to have something that is theirs, even if it’s only their own tube of toothpaste puts a smile on their faces,” Moagi continued. The project will see many children’s hopes lifted and put smiles on all of their faces.

Kreatiwiteit by Brackenhurst VLU Die Brackenhurst VLU dames het op 1 Oktober hul maandelikse vergadering by die NG Kerk Brackenhurst gehou. Voorsitster, Me. Me.

Violence mars Deep in the Woods concert The suspect was immediately put under police guard as he will be facing three cases of attempted murder. Alberton SAPS are investigating three cases of attempted murder following a shooting incident at the Deep in the Woods concert at Meyers Farm on Saturday afternoon. Three people, including the suspect, a well-known boxer from the area, have been described as being in a critical condition at the hospital. It is alleged that two men who attended the concert had an argument. One of them pulled out a pistol and started shooting at the other one. In the process, three people were wounded, of whom two were bystanders. A member of the public, alleged to be a police reservist, was on the scene at the time of the incident and also fired a shot at the suspect. The suspect, who was wounded, was then disarmed.

The victims were immediately transported to the hospital. One of the female victims was treated and discharged. Three others, including the suspect, were seriously wounded and are described as critical. “The suspect was immediately put under police guard as he will be facing three cases of attempted murder, said Provincial Police Spokesperson Col Dlamini. The organizers of Deep in the Woods confirmed the incident. According to them, a patron entered the venue with his girlfriend, with a firearm in her handbag, the incident occurred and shots were discharged. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families,” said Mark Sham, event organiser.

Pay water and lights on time – bill or no bill

The City of Ekurhuleni has warned ratepayers that the Post Office strike is not an excuse for residents to avoid paying their municipal accounts or to pay them late. Residents, they say, who skip payments or do not pay on time will incur arrears on their accounts. “We are aware of the effects of the strike by Post Office workers; however, it was in view of circumstances like these, amongst others that the municipality introduced numerous options which only serve to make accessibility of statements and payments easy. The non-receipt of a statement does not exempt any person from the liability to pay such an account,” said Themba Gadebe, the Metro’s spokesperson. Residents are encouraged to pay similar amounts to those in their previous month’s statements should they not have received their current statements. Residents who receive neither full statements by post nor summary statements by SMS are encouraged to visit their Customer Care Centres to update their contact details. The municipal basket of improved payment methods includes the

online system, which enables customers to view and pay their accounts online. Therefore residents are encouraged to register on www.e-siyakhokha.co.za to be able to view their statements online. Residents can also pay their accounts at the Customer Care Centres or outlets identified on the backs of their statements. The online system also enables residents to pre-date payments (you can set the system to pay your account on a set date with a set amount if you are on leave or on holiday); the system also immediately gives you notification of payment and keeps records of your accounts and payments from the time you register to use this method. In addition, you can query your account while online. “It is important to note that the due date for payment is fixed and it does not change from month to month, which helps you not to miss your payment. When in doubt, customers may phone the numbers at the back of their previous statement,” Gadebe said, adding that alternatively they can email their account numbers including contact details to accountenquiries@ekurhuleni.gov.za.

CANSA goes through the night Walking for cancer awareness

SURVIVORS: Kymberley Lourens, Sharon Britz and Penny Wittstock CANSA Alberton hosted their first CANSA Relay for Life on the evening of 3 October at the Alberton Rugby Club. The Relay for Life is an overnight event which starts at sundown and ends at sunrise, with people constantly walking around the field. It is symbolic, as participants walk in the steps of survivors. Sundown represents the stage when someone finds out that they have cancer, and it gets cold, dark and wet

- and when you get treatment you cannot stop, but have to carry on. The finish at sunrise represents the stage of remission. It is all a great celebration of life. CANSA is a non-profit organization, and relies on funding from the community - all funding also goes back into the community. “An event like this takes months of preparation and we would like to thank the public and the committee for the support,” said Sharon Britz from CANSA.

AWARENESS: Pink T-shirts were everywhere. St Catherine’s School in association with Pick n’ Pay held a Cancer Walk on 6 October. The day saw nearly 1 800 people dressed in pink walking 5 kilometres to raise awareness for breast cancer. A fun day for the whole family saw people from all ages, from babies in strollers to seasoned veterans, walking for this worthy cause.

Out of Africa photogenic queen The Out of Africa Winter Queen gala evening took place on 30 August in the Paarl Winelands, Cape Town. This CHOC fundraiser competition is a national competition and the main mission is to raise funds for childhood cancer awareness. The Out of Africa pageant also aims to help women all over the continent “to be the change they want to see in the world.” Madeleine van Niekerk, an Out of Africa Winter Queen finalist from Alberton, was awarded the the “Photogenic Queen” award on the evening. “The Out of Africa competition gave me the opportunity to give above and beyond for CHOC, by raising funds for children with cancer,” Madeleine said. “I am a Radiation Therapist and work with cancer patients on a daily basis. It breaks my heart to see children come for treatment. CHOC is very close to my heart and very few people know how to get involved to help. This competition offered me the platform to create awareness for CHOC.” Madeleine also said that it was an honour for her to represent Gauteng in Cape Town and to return home with the Photogenic Queen award.

Naweek Belewenis

Men and depression While depression is becoming increasingly common, men are still three times less likely than women to seek professional help and be diagnosed. The suicide rate for depressed men versus women is four to one. Depression is underpinned by many biological, psychological and social triggers, says Dr Hemant Nowbath, a specialist psychiatrist at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. “There may be a family history, underlying medical problems, financial difficulties, problems in relationships, social isolation or bereavement. The stresses of living in a society bedevilled by crime, violence, corruption, poverty, racism and lack of opportunity should also not be ignored,” says Nowbath.

www.tameTIMES.co.za

Despite the fact that depression is one of the most treatable psychiatric disorders, with between 80 and 90 percent of all depressed people responding to treatment, South African men are unfortunately still reluctant to seek help because of the stigma attached to mental illness. “Due to the societal expectations of men never expressing tears and sad emotions,” says Pauline Mawson, a clinical psychologist at Life Bedford Gardens Hospital in Bedfordview, “men tend to bottle things up, which can become completely overwhelming.” According to Dr Nowbath, depression in men is often more severe and presents differently. “Pressure on the ‘macho man’ needing to be in control of his emotions,

means that depression in men is frequently disguised by unhealthy coping strategies. These include working long hours at the office, or spending huge amounts of time at the gym; abusing substances, especially alcohol; and inappropriate behaviour such as aggression, violence and anger.” Dr Nowbath adds that because men may not be typically depressed and tend to suffer from numerous somatic (physical) complaints such as exhaustion, headaches, chronic pain and digestive and sleep problems, the diagnosis of depression is often missed, which can have dramatic consequences: depressed men are four times more likely than their female counterparts to commit suicide. They battle to come forward, as this is (wrongly) considered a sign of weakness and excessive emotion. “Men need to understand that depression is a biochemical illness that needs to be treated from a medical point of view and has nothing to do with being less of a man,” says Dr Reino Verster, a psychiatrist at Life Hunterscraig Private Hospital in Port Elizabeth. “There are chemicals in the brain that regulate your mood, such as serotonin, noradrenalin and dopamine. When their concentrations become abnormal, you become clinically depressed, and the only way to overcome this is to restore the balance with the help of a qualified health practitioner,” says Dr Verster. Dr Nowbath adds that a combination of medication and psychotherapy can be highly effective in most cases.

Speedster boss getting wages On the afternoon of Friday afternoon 26 September, a male driver in a BMW 1 Series sedan was caught doing a thundering 124km/h in a 70km/h zone. The driver claimed that he was a businessman rushing to the bank to withdraw money in order to pay his employees. He was arrested along Swartkoppies Road between Hennie Alberts and Vermooten Streets in Alberton. The 38-year-old driver was charged with reckless and negligent driving at Brackendowns Police Station and later released on bail of R1 000. On the morning of Sunday 28 September, a 66-year-

old man was caught driving 168km/h in a 120km/h zone along the N12 Eastbound between the R59 and Voortrekker turnoffs. Two more speedsters, one on a Kawasaki motorbike and the other in a Ford Fiesta were nabbed that Sunday between 09:00 and 09:18, driving 177km/h and 161km/h respectively. Both were men in their thirties who claimed they were rushing to get home. All three arrestees were detained at Alberton Police Station and later released on bail of R1 000 each.

WORKING TOGETHER: Members from the Brackendowns SAPS Football Team When the management team from Engen Brackenview found out about the high suicide rate among South African police officers, they decided to help. They are now the official sponsor for the Brackendown SAPS Football Team, which is participating in the East Rand SAPS Football League. They have sponsored full kits, soccer balls, whistles and more. “We have been part of the community for 18 years, and we believe strongly in social interaction and teambuilding in the police force,” said Engen Brackenview owner, Tushar Naik. The league is a fun activity and a break from the stressful everyday life of a police officer. It helps the officers to relax and change their mind-set for a while, as well as promoting teambuilding.
