Regstelling Tiny grey Duiker buck Daan Grobler (mediaskakelbeampte, Alberton-erfenisvereniging) skryf:
As dit maar net so maklik was nê?
saved on highway On the morning of 4 September traffic came to a standstill when EMPD closed off the highway between Michelle Avenue and the Reading interchange to save a little Grey Duiker buck from being hit by passing vehicles. Concerned motorists saw the Duiker running across the highway and tried to stop the traffic to save the animal. One of them, Mr Kurt Beine, contacted the Alberton SPCA, which referred the matter to the Meyersdal Eco Estate. The Estate’s Environmental Manager, Andrew Jackson, arrived on the scene soon afterwards to help capture the animal. Mr Beine also phoned the SAPS, who then asked the EMPD to help. The EMPD assisted in closing the highway and the buck was safely captured. The buck was taken to the Free Me Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre for examination to determine if the animal was injured. Once the Centre is satisfied with its rehabilitation, the Duiker will be set free in a suitable area. Mr Kurt Beine told tame TIMES that “it was nice to see human intervention towards wildlife.”

In support of Casual Day tame TIMES staff dressed up in glitter, sequins and as much bling as possible. Some ladies even wore tiaras which brought many smiles to the day. Casual Day is one of South Africa’s biggest charity initiatives. It is the one day in the year when everyone is invited to wear something
different from their normal work attire and your Casual Day sticker is your license to wear anything you like to work. All proceeds from the sale of the stickers go towards people with disabilities in South Africa. We proudly bought our stickers from the Hamlet School in Regent Park, in support of a cause we believe in.

Ekurhuleni wins Bontle ke Botho clean and green award
EAST IS BEST: MEC Legogang Maile hands over the award for cleanest city in Gauteng to MMC Vuyelwa Mabena and her jubilant team from the City of Ekurhuleni’s Environmental Resource Management and Development Department.
Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za The City of Ekurhuleni won an award for the cleanest municipality in Gauteng and was given the top prize of R300 000 at the Bontle ke Botho awards ceremony. The event was recently hosted by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the Lakes Hotel in Benoni. Ekurhuleni will now represent the Gauteng province at the Greenest Municipality competition which is run by National Department of Environmental Affairs, an award which the City won last year. Lebogang Maile, Gauteng MEC of Agriculture
and Rural Development, also awarded the City of Ekurhuleni a Certificate of Recognition for being the first Gauteng municipality to win the national Greenest Municipality Competition last year. “This campaign continues to facilitate community development and empowerment. On both formal and informal education fronts, learners in schools and community members participating in the project gained the necessary environmental skills, knowledge, attitude and values required to ensure that they participate meaningfully in addressing environmental issues that affect them now and in the future,” said Maile. Councillor Vuyelwa Mabena, Member of Mayoral Committee for Environmental
Management in Ekurhuleni said, “This project has had a positive impact in many of our communities and schools. It is important that we come up with innovations that will ensure that it is sustained for the next 20 years.” The City of Johannesburg came second on the competition. The winners of the 2014 Bontle ke Botho awards in the City of Ekurhuleni are as follows: for wards in new projects, ward 95 in Vosloorus took the second position and won R45 000; in the sustainable wards projects, ward 49 in Katlehong took the fourth position and won R15 000; for schools, Kathorus scooped all the awards in the new projects. Abinala Primary School in Vosloorus won the first prize and was awarded R35 000. The second prize was won by Leratadima Primary School in Thokoza and scooped R30 000. The third prize went to Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong and won R25 000. The fourth prize was won by Umkhathizwe Primary School in Thokoza and was awarded R20 000. The fifty award went to Thulisa Primary School in Katlehong, which won R15 000. Bontle Ke Botho is an initiative established by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2002. It is aimed at encouraging sustainable environmental practices in communities, schools, wards and municipal level. Another objective of the programme is to promote environmental actions that take into consideration poverty alleviation and sustainable living practices. Projects are required to address one or more of the five themes which are: water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable agriculture and greening.
RewardOffered Rewards offered for Lena Street attackers Family of the elderly married couple, aged 79 and 80 years of age, who were brutally attacked in their house in Lena Street, Linmeyer on 29 August are offering a reward of a substantial amount for each suspect who is convicted. The 79- and 80-year-old couple were attacked in their home of 42 years between 8:30 and 9:00. They were stabbed, strangled and kicked. The 80-year-old man is in an induced coma in ICU and the 79-year-old woman is currently in hospital. It is believed the suspects are black. The first suspect is of average height and build, the second is slightly taller, the third is obese and the last one is small and had a red blanket wrapped around their body. Jewellery, money, laptops and passports were stolen. A further reward of R20 000 is on offer for the arrest of the perpetrators - with enough evidence to build a strong case against them – by 19 September.
If you have any information, please contact the investigating officer from Moffatview SAPS on 082 265 6799.
September is all about trees
The Ekurhuleni Parks Department is in the process of planting Pecan Nut trees across Alberton. Last week the Department started by planting a few trees in the Informal Settlement in 1st Avenue, Alberton North. Trees will also be planted at organizations such as Broken Wings, CMR Alberton and Alberton High School which have dedicated themselves to take care of the trees. Pecan Nut trees grow relatively fast and can reach a height of five metres within ten years.
11 000 in 11 minutes The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at planting 11 000 trees in its 101 wards. The project began in April at the opening of Motsu Park in Tembisa, and will culminate in an 11-minute challenge on September 13 in celebration of Arbor Day. The objective of the campaign is to create an urban forest to combat climate change, thus maintaining a healthy environment for the benefit of humanity at no cost. The challenge will require the participation of Ekurhuleni residents from all walks of life. Join the movement by contacting your ward councillor or your area project manager to obtain a tree. Those participating in the
challenge will be requested to plant their trees at a specific time on September 13, although this is not a prerequisite for participation. Individuals, organizations, businesses, schools, churches, clubs and everyone else are invited to take part. Contact details for the project manager in Thokoza, Katlehong and Alberton are Brenda Nkosi on 011 999 0651. Tree Pruning Programme 2014/2015: The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has the following Tree Pruning Programme for Alberton. Normal request will be attended to only on Fridays; emergencies will be dealt with on the same day that they are reported.

Now you can brew Alberton Post Office your own beer home to squatters
Community
Stephanie Conradie
tame TIMES have received numerous complaints regarding the state of the area surrounding Alberton Post Office. Homeless people have taken over the area next to the Post Office as well as the section housing the post boxes and the smell of human waste is overwhelming. Post Office Supervisor Bongi Matshinana told tame TIMES that they are attending to the problem. They are planning to close off the area with palisades in order to keep squatters away. They could, however, not confirm when the plan will be put into action.

The first ever Brew and Braai shop opened their doors on Saturday 6 September at the Meyersdal Mall. Webber attended the day and did various cooking demonstrations and Alrode based company, Swagga Breweries, had their Craft Beer on tap. Bradley Sherwood from Alberton is the owner and founder of Brew and Braai. He explained that in South Africa braais and beer go hand in hand. He came up with the concept when he realised that there was no retail shop in South Africa where one can buy home brewing products together with exclusive braai equipment. Home brewing is very popular in other
countries and now South Africans, who are known to enjoy a braai and a beer, can also brew their own beer, ginger beer and ciders at home. In the near future Brew and Braai are also planning to host workshops where brewers can share their recipes. Brew and Braai is in the process of opening another shop in Port Elizabeth within the next few months and soon they will be opening stores in Fourways, Durban, Nelspruit and Cape Town as well. The Meyersdal shop is situated on the corner of Hennie Alberts and Michelle Avenue at Meyersdal Mall, second floor, shop 14. For more information contact Bradley on 011 867 0067 or email brad@brewandbraai.co.za.

Letters&Notices Motorists make it difficult for pedestrians Ellen van Dyk writes:
Regarding your letter on page 12 (2 September) about the safety of pedestrians: in context I agree with it, but for the past three years I have walked from South Crest to Generaal Alberts Primary to pick up my son from school. From there I walk to Marais Viljoen High School to pick up my two daughters and them walk back home again, Monday to Friday, regardless of the weather. Some people simply do not care about pedestrians. They park their cars on pavements, forcing us to walk in the street. In some places the pavement cannot be walked on, because the vegetation is so overgrown and so many branches have fallen. People drive recklessly, not caring about us walking.
An appeal to readers
On Friday 29 August, a lady was involved in an accident when her car was hit by another driver who jumped a red light. Her car was subsequently stolen from the scene where the accident took place. The car has been reported stolen and a civil case has been opened. She however fears that she may have to wait a few years to receive compensation. She runs a small business and is in need of a small run around vehicle. She is appealing to readers in hope to find a car that she could pay off in monthly instalments. If you will be able to assist, please contact Di on 079 165 0402.

It is time to spring clean your house and to throw out old and unwanted items. We all have white elephants in our houses or clothing that we have not worn for the past year. Take all your unwanted items to CMR Alberton. They know plenty of needy families that you can help. CMR also has a “dress for less boutique,” where they sell the items you no longer need to unemployed women in the community. These ladies have families to support and re-sell these items to do so. This in turn helps the CMR, as they can then help new families that they have not helped before. Contact CMR Alberton - they could assist you by collecting the items from you, or you could take your items to the CMR offices at 18 Lenin Street, Raceview, Alberton. Brighten the corner The simple truth of life is that all of us want to live better, purpose-driven and satisfying lives. However, the harsh reality is that most do not have the necessary skills, knowledge and tools to navigate life’s storms. How many people daily stand on street corners begging for food? How many people roam the streets aimlessly every day? How many people have jobs but drag themselves out of bed every day because the jobs they do are misaligned with their purposes in life? For most of these people, life is about survival. True living, however, is about living a life with purpose. In the midst of adversities, we must be able to hold firm to the steering wheel of our lives and turn it in the direction we want it to go. As a life coach, I am going to share some of the tools that you can begin to use. What is life coaching? Life coaching is an individual relationship between a coach and a coachee that aims to bring about life-changing transformational experiences. It is about clarifying the coachee’s values and visions and setting new goals and actions. Transformation of our lives begins with mastering ourselves and personal mastery is an individual responsibility. Here are a few steps to set you up for a journey of personal mastery: 1) Always be positive and optimistic about life. Positive attracts positive. 2) Hang around people who keep you focused and growing. Avoid toxic relationships. Remember, relationships are contagious. 3) Do not accept things as they are. Make an effort to change your circumstances, no matter where you are. 4) Never quit. Have staying power. Life is not about falling ten times, but rising eleven times after falling. 5) Remember, you are the steward of your life, no one else. Stop blaming others.

Miss Earth SA announced Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership programme that equips young women with skills to make a green, eco-friendly, sustainable difference within their communities and across South Africa. Since March, a group of young and passionate eco-warriors embarked on a journey to preserve Earth. On 4 September the 13 finalists gathered at Montecasino, where the lovely Ilze Saunders was announced Miss Earth SA 2014. Saunders will take over from former Miss Earth SA, Ashanti Mbanga, who has left big shoes to fill. The four elements and co-ambassadors accompanying Saunders on her journey are: Steffani Alexander (first runner-up), Michillay Brown (third runner-up), and Roxanne Watson (fourth runner-up). Degrecia Zwane from Alberton proudly made it through to the finals. She has left her green mark all around Ekurhuleni and the Johannesburg South area. Even though she did not win, she is motivated to continue the positive change. According to Catherine Constantinides, Executive Director of Miss Earth SA, sustainability, climate change, legal wildlife trade and food security are the issues that these young environmental ambassadors have to address. GREEN QUEEN: Miss Earth SA 2014 Ilze Saunders Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, difference Miss Earth SA makes. She assured the contestants and Edna Molewa, among many other prestigious stakeholders that Miss Earth SA and its projects will be at the top of guests, acknowledged the sustainable the government’s sustainability agenda.

Crime Rape suspect refused bail Alberton SAPS detectives have put a 45-year-old rape and house-breaking suspect in Boksburg prison after building what they believe is a strong case for the prosecution. The accused is awaiting trial behind bars as his bail was opposed. Constable Richter and the Alberton tracing team arrested the man after positively linking him to the rape of a Randhart woman, whose house the man is also accused of robbing. Tireless detective work led the constable and his team to the suspect, in whose possession they found some of the items stolen from the Randhart house.

Two arrested with dagga
Alberton SAPS sector patrols paid off last week as three sharpeyed cops acted on their suspicions and stopped to search two men in two different streets in the Roodekop Industrial area. The two were both carrying bags full of dagga when Constables Nkwana, Baloyi and Mabunda searched them. The suspects were arrested, charged at Alberton SAPS and have already appeared at Palm Ridge Court.
CRIME PREVENTION: Brackendowns SAPS ladies in blue The Brackendowns SAPS Women’s Network took to the streets on 27 August to distribute crime awareness pamphlets in the Mayberry Park and Meyersdal areas. These pamphlets were distributed via post boxes or given out to motorists driving past. They included useful information on safety at home, safety on business premises and how to survive a hijacking situation.
Cops on patrol arrest man While doing early morning patrolling, Const. Venter and Const. Phatswane from Brackendowns SAPS, stopped and searched a suspicious-looking man in the Brackenhurst sector 2 area. They found him in possession of two small packets of white powder and 9mm rounds. He was arrested and appeared at Palm Ridge Court on Monday 1 September.

The National Lotteries Board (NLB) would like to invite qualifying organisations that support the development of sport at grassroots level to apply for funding. Charlotte Thabang Mampane, Chief Executive Officer of the NLB said the scope of the funding programme is in line with government policy to support all sporting codes in South Africa. The NLB allocates a total of close to R2 billion each financial year in funding to various qualifying organisations covering all three sectors including charities, arts and culture organisations and sporting entities. “We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all interested schools and clubs to forward their application to the NLB as early as possible, observing the funding criteria and procedures to avoid disappointment. Failure to comply with the regulations and prescribed guidelines will result in the application automatically being disqualified,” Mampane said. We would also like to reiterate the fact that annually the NLB receives requests for funding amounting to more than R70 billion, a figure that is well in excess of the funds available for distribution.” The NLB will give preference to sports clubs and no-fee schools (Quintile 1,2 and 3) in poor, previously disadvantaged and rural communities that support capacity building (training of coaches and technical officials), universal access to facilities and provision or upgrading of access facilities for people with disabilities. Application forms are available at the NLB head offices in Pretoria or online at www.nlb.org.za
