They say “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and after a rather curious debate last week, I’m starting to think this just might be true. The debate was over the colour of a certain dress which started online but somehow infiltrated the tame TIMES offices. This debate raged across social media platforms, drawing input from a multitude across the globe, after the guest to a Scottish wedding posted a rather innocent question online in her Tumblr account, along with a picture of the beautiful yet controversial dress: “Guys please help me. Is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the (expletive) out. She’s consistently seen gold.” According to online posts, some had seen gold and white when first viewing the dress and later black and blue – others hadn’t seen white and gold at all. Eventually the international media caught onto the whole debate, with news headlines musing: “Debate rages over colour of dress photographed in rare light.”

It was when searching for interesting news to put on our news snippets page (see page 10), that we came across the article and the controversial photo of the dress. “What colour is this dress?” my colleague asked me. To me, her question was as simple as someone asking: “What colour is the sky?” But of course, it was blue. It was when she told me she had seen the dress as white, that we began our own debate. More interesting than the debate itself, were news follow-ups highlighting scientists’ explanations for the magic dress. Things like frame of reference, light extraction and the cornea were included in these in-depth scientific reports. Now that the online hype over the dress has ceased, one thing is clear: no two humans perceive life - and maybe the outfit you are wearing right now - in the same way. More amazing than this online dress debacle is how people from all backgrounds who hold such different perceptions are able to stand together in agreement and work towards a single cause. In recent weeks, Edenvale authorities have teamed together to conduct what is allegedly the biggest clean-up operation the area has ever seen (see page 4). On Friday, Bedfordview police officials, together with local security companies embarked on an intensive crime sweep of the area. people to really question what they want to do with their lives.” She said the initiative grew from being a platform to promote her music to a platform where her team now educates, motivates and inspires the youth. She said she believed it was important for children to be educated on different options for their future after matric: “Many kids don’t have the knowledge, the tools or the skills to understand what career options are available to them when they leave school. Through a survey called the FutureFacts survey, we’ve gained insight into how learners want to access this information, what information they’re really after and their hopes and fears about the future. These insights have formed the basis of the RockingFuture career expo.” She explained learners leaving school had various challenges: “Many don’t know the first thing about putting together a great CV or approaching companies within their industry of choice. Many don’t even know how to open a bank account.” She said she believed learners needed to be encouraged to be more proactive in their own lives. “They need to prepare themselves for life after school as though they’re preparing for an Idols audition – they only get one shot to make a good impression.” The RockingFuture expo gives learners the information they need to make crucial decisions about their future after they leave school. The two suspects arrested following the Bedford Centre shootout have been officially charged with armed robbery. RATHER DON’T LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN THE CAR.” Edenvale police have again warned the public to keep their vehicles secure at all times. This follows an escalation of motor vehicle thefts in the area. Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said the Edenvale CBD area remained a hot spot for motor vehicle thefts. “The general security precautions always apply: don’t park in a remote area, keep your car doors locked when visiting friends, park in their premises, and use a steering wheel and gear lock.” Furthermore, residents are advised not to use their vehicles as “safes” when visiting friends or going to the shops. “Remember, a jamming device can also unlock the boot of your car. Rather don’t leave any valuables in the car.”
Drunken brawl ends in death
A drunken brawl between two vagrants in the Eastleigh area ended in death on Sunday evening last week. Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said one of the men allegedly stabbed the other under the influence. “A resident in the area notified us of the crime and we managed to arrest the offender, who has been charged with murder,” he said.
While the thought of owning a monkey or an exotic species of lizard might entice many people, residents are advised to know their facts before taking on wild animals as pets. “Most people have no idea of how to properly take care of wild animals and can often cause more damage than assistance when they do so,” says Rynette Coetzee, senior field officer for the Endangered Wildlife Trust. “We always recommend that people who find a wild animal in need of care rather take the animal to a properly registered rehabilitation centre or to veterinarians that have experience with wildlife. Some zoos also have experienced veterinarians who can take care of such animals.” She advises the public to inform their local district conservation official of the presence of a wild animal. “They may also be able to give advice on what the next course of action should be. People need to remember that a wild animal can never become domesticated. It merely loses its fear of humans, becomes unpredictable and therefore more dangerous.” She explained that all indigenous animals are protected by legislation. “You always require

a permit for, for example, collecting, receiving, owning or conveying wild animals,” she said. “Some animals are also protected in terms of national legislation, not just provincial legislation and people need to acquaint themselves with the relevant legislation to ensure that they, in their striving to save an animal, are not committing a crime.” She said keeping wild animals as pets posed a serious health and safety threat to humans and other animals. “Once the animal has been removed it is often impossible to rehabilitate and release it again and most of the zoos have no space for such animals, which means they have to be put down. In rare cases animals can be successfully rehabilitated and released, but they must be monitored for at least five years to ensure that they have adapted again to the wild/normal life they were meant to lead. That is why we recommend that people do not try to rear or nurse such animals and should leave it to the experts.” For more information, call 011 372 3600.
Bedfordview cops recover stolen gun Bedfordview police have charged a man with negligent handling of a firearm, after the man reported his weapon stolen from a vehicle outside a popular Bedfordview entertainment venue. The firearm had been inside a briefcase, which the owner had kept inside the bakkie while he was visiting the venue. Bedfordview police spokesperson Sergeant Nhlabathi Mduduza said the man had locked all of his
doors, keeping his briefcase with his firearm and other items, inside. Just after midnight he went to his car and noticed the left rear window had been broken and the briefcase taken. “When the Bedfordview detective unit checked the docket a few days later, they found that the firearm was a Colt S/N 96581 with one magazine and 8 x live rounds in it.”
Tip-off leads to recovery of stolen goods Yoghurts, condoms, and chewing gum were among the items stolen out of a stationary truck in Elandsfontein, on 26 February at around 12 noon. These items were later recovered at a nearby store in Elandsfontein already on display as stock on the shelves.

Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za Specialist sectional title attorney Marina Constas was recently honoured by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women when she was presented with a “Women of Excellence Award” in the field of law at an awards function held at the Johannesburg Country Club in Auckland Park. Constas is the director of BBM Attorneys, which has branches in Houghton, Bedfordview, Pretoria, Umhlanga Rocks and Cape Town. She is also the co-author of the best-selling book, “Demystifying Sectional Title,” which is the definitive guide for anyone living in, or buying or leasing property in a sectional title complex, or anyone who deals with sectional title in any manner. Constas told the tame TIMES she had been a lawyer for the past 20 years and explained she had initially wanted to become a teacher. “I decided at the last minute to study a B.A.LL.B. degree at Wits,” she said. “I have always enjoyed the gravitas of the legal profession, the unbelievable general knowledge that it can provide, and the fact that every avenue of life can be linked to the law and how it operates. Knowing your rights is powerful.” She specialised in Property Law, more specifically in the field of Sectional Title Law. She said among the highlights of her career was being invited on to radio
and TV shows to discuss her expertise and publishing her bestselling book. But while law is her speciality, there is so much more to her than her legal expertise and tenacity. Constas is a health and exercise enthusiast, who enjoys reading interesting out-of-the-box material and autobiographies. “My most exciting recent project was cofounding the first online, paperless website which links teenagers needing to complete their compulsory community service hours at school to reputable, accredited charities. The website is communityhourssa.co.za,” she said. She also served on the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) for ten years. “I loved being part of this organisation which I joined so that I could take back some level of control of security in my area.” Constas said despite her busy, communityfocused life, her daughter was top priority. “I ensure that work revolves around her, and not the other way around. I have a fantastic support structure, and am an organised person which definitely helps!” Daughter Lexi Hughes is following in her mother’s steps as a brilliant orator. “She doesn’t know yet what she wants to do after school, but anything where you would have to present, make speeches or persuade people about something would be up her alley,” said Constas. She said making it to the top of her profession had had challenges: “As a woman, I have had to work hard to assert myself with male

You teach people how to treat you, and it’s up to you, as a woman, to set boundaries for how you want people - men or women - to conduct themselves around you. Regrettably, I have seen how very young, female attorneys can attempt to climb the ladder in inappropriate ways. You only have one reputation, and that should be fiercely
protected.” She said she was humbled and surprised by her award: “I was so touched to receive an award from my own community. It was really poignant to accept the award, as I received a chance to study with financial assistance from the Pelepponesian Society, a Greek Bursar. I was pleased to see that I had not let them down.”
Edenvale residents and authorities make a stand
Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za Local authorities recently headed a massive clean-up operation in the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) area, in what Linda McKenzie, chairperson of the Edenvale Community Policing Forum (ECPF) and manager of the ECID, calls the biggest known collective sweep of the area. Those involved included local security companies, and council workers, Metro Police and Edenvale police officials. She spoke to the tame TIMES after the successful operation, explaining that the initiative formed part of the Integrated Bylaw Enforcement and Visible Service Delivery Drive, adding she believed by-law
enforcement and visible service delivery were crucial in keeping crime in the area in check. “If, for example, a street light isn’t working, or if there is an overgrowth of branches or shrubbery littering sidewalks, this gives criminals a chance to operate undetected. If there are potholes in the road, they could damage your tyre late at night and put you at risk as a victim of crime.” In this landmark sweep, over 200 officials gathered to honour the area thousands of residents call home. Roads and pavements were cleaned; and searches were made, yielding successful results, among them arrests for drug possession and the confiscation of unlicensed firearms. “The Edenvale community is unique in that residents are willing to roll their sleeves up to
get involved and time and time again stand together to campaign for a better area.” “To give an example, last year the authorities wanted to transfer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts to the Kempton Park area because he is so good at what he does. The community stood together and together collected 5 000 signatures in four days and the transfer was put on halt.” In another example of Edenvale’s solidarity, recently reported in the tame TIMES, Ward 18 councillor Heather Hart spearheaded a campaign to stop the much-loved Edenvale Sports Grounds from being alienated as a land parcel by local council, which would make it vulnerable to external developers. She collected 9 000 signatures from residents and sporting officials determined to protect the area’s heritage.
“As part of the Integrated Bylaw Enforcement and Visible Service Delivery Drive, we plan to document every pothole, every broken fence or overgrown and neglected pavement,” said McKenzie. “This aligns with our aims to keep the Edenvale area clean, green and safe.” She said in coming months, the team would divide Edenvale into areas, and do focused clean-up operations in each of these. “Through such initiatives we hope to give a message to the criminals out there that the Edenvale community is a force to be reckoned with. We have zero tolerance towards crime and we’re prepared to stand together to make our point.” Another clean-up operation was held on Wednesday last week (see page 3) and in this successful operation an unlicensed firearm was found.

Commuters travelling through Bedfordview Central might have noticed the life-size pizza box mascot handing out pamphlets at the busy Bedfordview intersection of Nicol and Van Buuren Roads. This pizza box is the brainchild of Regina Figueira, and her team at Pizza Del Forno. Figuera, owner of the pizza business, comes from the ‘black and white’ corporate world, as she described it, and decided to embrace a new opportunity by taking ownership of Pizza Del Forno nine months ago. “I really felt out of my depth initially, and then I decided to keep a notebook and pen with me and write down the ideas I had to bring the business to the community and create a good feeling between us and the people of Bedfordview. She is the one who instigated the bright red tuk tuk vehicle often seen traversing Bedfordview’s streets on the way to deliver pizzas. “The other day we delivered 38 pizzas to St Benedict’s and the boys, some of them grown matric boys, ran out with excitement to see the red vehicle. Many wanted to get

Victory at Dakar Rally
VICTORIOUS: South Africans celebrate their Dakar Rally victory.
South African teams again performed with distinction in this year’s Dakar Rally. Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz (Toyota Imperial Hilux) were once again on the podium, Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie (Toyota Imperial Hilux) finished 16th with Johan van Staden/Mike Lawrenson (KEC Nissan Navara) 31st and Jurgen and Daniel Schroder (PS Laser Nissan Navara) 38th. This year also saw a record number of South African built or designed vehicles taking part in the South American classic. These were made up of 18 Toyota Hilux models, three Nissan Navaras, two Renault Duster’s and one Ford Ranger. A revamped calendar of events this year sees a later start and earlier finish to this year’s Donaldson Cross Country Championship. This accommodates a growing South African presence in the Dakar Rally, and local teams entering the South American race will now have longer preparation and recovery periods. LEEUWENHOF’S LUCKY AIDEN Visarend Gauteng Leeuwenhof student Aiden Smal was very excited to meet the Emirates Lions rugby team and run out on to the field with the players during the Saturday 28 February match against the DHL Stormers as part of the Super 15 Rugby tournament. He also had the privilege of placing the ball in the centre of the field prior to kickoff. Smal’s father entered his son into a competition which he won – the prize included a meet-and-greet with the Emirates Lions rugby team as well as the chance to carry the ball on to the field. Leeuwenhof is very proud of Smal, who jogged on to the field with pride.
