Remember Casual Day: Friday 5 September

Casual Day Youth Ambassadors are challenging the youth of South Africa to volunteer to raise donations for Casual Day. Nicole Laxton, Khumo Moyane and Patrick Mashegwana have been volunteering for Casual Day and are already into their second campaign for the project that raises funds for persons with disabilities. “We are celebrating Youth month this June by issuing a challenge to young people all over the country to volunteer for Casual Day by helping organisations to raise donations for stickers and get their schools involved,” says Casual Day ambassador Khumo Moyane. Khumo volunteered last year and this year he was offered a contract position with Casual Day. “Volunteering is a very good way to kick-start your career,” says Khumo. “It shows that you are willing to work hard and it is a way to prove your worth to future employers. I found the work really gratifying and found a home here with Casual Day. I have a position at the Casual Day office, but I will continue to volunteer in my community on my off days.” Casual Day is South Africa’s most successful fundraising project for persons with disabilities – and the amount raised for last year has climbed to R24.8 million. Sponsored by The Edcon Group, Casual Day is the flagship project of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA), which this year celebrates 75

years of service to the community of persons with disabilities. “This year we have printed 3.5 million stickers and we need everyone’s help to raise donations for these stickers. We don’t just sell stickers on one day, we must start now to make this year a success. The theme for this year is Bring out the Bling. Casual Day provides the country with the opportunity to show their solidarity with persons with disabilities, at the same time enjoying teambuilding and camaraderie with their fellow participants. It gives South Africans the opportunity to be creative and have fun while contributing to the betterment of society. It is community spirit in action and the project relies heavily on volunteers for its success,” says Casual Day project leader Celeste Vinassa.

People are losing trust in banks, governments, everything and anything. So the church must become trustworthy, and love must be between us. We need to celebrate God’s life in us. Many people go to church and do not enjoy it, because it is just a church service and no celebration of God’s life. We must be able to fellowship together and become the finishing generation. God is giving us the grace to change within ourselves. We are part of one huge army,

marching forward for God, taking over domains. God is going to take us to high places to dismantle the work of the enemy. The fire of God is going to break out and as people of God; we must be under proper command. It is now the time of the church and it is God’s time. There is going to be a fresh outpouring of God’s grace all across the nations of the world and specifically South Africa. Clouds of God’s rain are forming above us. Signs

and wonders are going to break out. Miracles are going to happen and nobody will be able to stop them. It is time for us to see our nation change. When we are divided in our mind and perception, then our strength as a church, as a nation, as leaders are lost. Alone we are fighting a losing battle, but if we stand together and take hands as leaders of our churches and cities, we can become a strong mighty force. God wants us to be a voice instead of a noise in our nation. There is still hope for our nation. The people of South Africa need hope and the church needs hope. Department Heads in Ekurhuleni, such as Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises Bulelani Magwanishe, and pioneering businesspeople, such as Gold Plat CEO Dr Smith, and SEFA CEO Mr Tahini Makhuvha, among others, took part in the summit. According to Gungubele’s keynote address, the South African economy is currently characterised by weak demand and low business confidence. In Gauteng alone, the unemployment rate is 36.4%. According to the World Economic Forum’s latest Global Risk Report, South Africa has the third highest unemployment rate for the youth (aged 1524). With these realities in mind, the summit serves as a collaborative platform whereby possible solutions for these grim realities can be discussed and evaluated. One of the key issues discussed at this year’s summit was youth economic participation. Many of the speakers emphasised the need for entrepreneurship and creating employment above seeking employment opportunities. To achieve this goal, enterprises offering financial support for upand-coming businesses/ economic initiatives are vital. The National Youth Development

Agency (NYDA), whose representatives were also present at the summit, is one example of such an enterprise. NYDA representatives highlighted the need for established senior businesses to incorporate the youth into their business endeavours, and to support them in the start-up phase of their businesses. In this way, more jobs will be created and the economic confidence of the youth will grow. The Department of Public Works has been assigned the goal of creating six million job opportunities by 2019, and NYDA is certain that entrepreneurship and youth incorporation into the private sector are two ways of achieving this goal. “Although we as government have a role to play, the private sector is the cornerstone of job creation, as it accounts for 90% of all jobs in the developing world. Therefore, the collaboration between government and the private sector is of utmost importance,” Gungubele explained. The summit was not only attended by delegates and business pioneers, but also by young people, such as interns of the Department of Economic Development, who were there to learn from each other and to rub shoulders with potential business partners. In the light of Youth Month, the Ekurhuleni Job Summit is one way of setting up a local plan for addressing youth unemployment in a hands-on manner.

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele looks at the exhibits at the 2014 Ekurhuleni Career Expo. On 9 and 10 June, the 2014 Ekurhuleni Career Expo took place at the Alberton Civic Centre, and on the first day alone more than 3000 youngsters visited the expo, seeking advice and information on career opportunities. It was the second year that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has hosted the Expo, which was aimed at exposing graduates, school leavers and young entrepreneurs to various employment opportunities available at companies in and around Ekurhuleni. “We are a municipality that hosts the biggest manufacturing sector in South Africa and can be called the workshop of Africa; we are also home to the continent’s busiest airport - these two elements are very relevant and key to our economic development,” said Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele during the official opening of the Expo. “The hosting of this exhibition thus fits

into our strategic vision which involves re-organising and revitalising industry so that our communities can benefit from jobcreating economic growth,” he said. Some of the exhibitors at the two-day expo included South African Airways, SA Express and Mango; Ekurhuleni East and West Colleges, Boston City Campus, Siyafunda CTC and the Peermont Education Trust; engineering, procurement and construction management specialists Deltron Consulting and civil engineering and project management consultancy Epitome Consulting. Various government departments and parastatals were also present to share information on their job creation and entrepreneurship projects, including the Department of Public Enterprises, Department of Public Works, Department of Energy and the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

Police impersonators arrested MS Thabisile Mfeka, Divisional Head: Support Services - Economic Development.

Police arrested an ex-police officer after he was found in possession of police blue lights, police sirens, and handcuffs in Mayfair, Johannesburg today. The 53-year-old former Colonel, who resigned from the police in 2008, was also found in possession of cash. Police officers were busy with sector patrols when they were stopped by members of the community concerned about a suspicious Ford Fiesta with three occupants which had been parked on the side of the road for several hours. Community members called for police backup, but one of the occupants of the car left before police reinforcements came. As soon as SAPS members arrived,

however, they approached the two remaining occupants of the car, searched it and recovered eight stolen cell-phones. The two suspects were then taken to the police station. The third suspect – who was the owner of the Ford Fiesta - was later arrested, after police found cash, police blue lights, police siren, handcuffs and a police identity card hidden inside his car. The car was then confiscated. The suspects will be charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, impersonating a police officer and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. They will appear in court soon. Investigations into the matter are continuing.

Save lives and property by preventing fires

The South African Weather Services has cautioned the public against extreme cold weather conditions to be experienced in the interior parts of the country. Temperatures are expected to be very low and members of the public are consequently warned to be extra cautious when keeping themselves warm by means of house-hold energy sources during winter. Ekurhuleni Emergency Services is on high alert and ready to respond to any fire-related challenges which could take place during winter, but is asking the public to be aware of fire safety issues at all times. They warn that all types of heaters, paraffin lamps and stoves, fire places, braziers, dry vegetation around residential areas, overloading of electric points and self-connections are some of the common causes of devastating firerelated incidents.

Safety tips: • Never leave heaters unattended at home, at the office or in any structure, as this might result in unnecessary fires. Always place heaters in the centre of the room away from anything that could easily catch fire. • Avoid leaving heaters switched on overnight while sleeping, or during the day while the family is at work. • Matches are not toys - keep them away from children. Children who play with lighters and matches tend to cause fires!

Klerksdorp-born songstress Ayanda Jiya (27) is a versatile entertainer who has had a burning desire for music from an early age. Currently working on her debut album titled ‘Ayandastand’ under the label TinismDotcom, Ayanda has introduced herself to the industry with the release of her extended play album (EP) titled Very Intimate Conversations. tame TIMES recently caught up with the singer-songwriter and got to know her a little better. (tT): When did you realise you have a musical talent and was it an easy decision for you to pursue a musical career? (AJ): I was 5 or 6 when it became evident that I had a musical talent and obviously I had to wait a bit longer before I could pursue my interest in music. I wanted to study first and needed to focus on other interests I had before doing the whole music thing professionally. I knew it was my passion and it had to be lived at some point in my life, so after studying I focused on my dream of music. (tT):Tell us about your influences - are there any musicians who have inspired your musical style? (AJ): Oh yes, I listen to a lot of genres mostly Gospel, Jazz, RnB and Soul. I’d like to believe that I have a very versatile ear for music. I spend time listening and trying to figure out how it was all put together. I find the whole process of putting a song together most intriguing, which is why I pay so much attention to detail with my own craft. My influences come from artists like Kim Burrell, Jazmine Sullivan, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Gwen Bunn, Foreign Exchange, Alex Isley, but my list is endless. (tT): Why Very Intimate Conversations (VIC)? (AJ): Well, I wanted to introduce myself to my audience. I wanted them to get to know

me better from the word go, so VIC was to introduce me to them in a more intimate manner to share the life issues we all face as human beings. I just felt that sometimes people forget that artists are just as human as they are and that you as an artist are no different from them at all. (tT): How was your experience recording your debut album, who did you work with and did they make you feel comfortable? (AJ): Well, recording my EP was an awesome experience. I didn’t collaborate with anyone on my EP but I have worked on my co-artist Ginger BreadMan’s debut album (R.O.T.Y). That experience for me was an absolute delight and I loved it so much that we ended up doing more collaborations. We seem to be very comfortable with each other, so working together is easy. Besides working with Ginger there will be more collaborations in the near future that I would like to do. (tT): Aside from the launch of VIC, what have been the highlights of your music career? (AJ): Ooh when I was an opening act for The Muffinz at Yamaha World, I had so much fun, the crowd was awesome, their energy was inviting, I was so comfortable! I did my thing and they loved it and I loved it more - that was one fantastic highlight of my career. (tT): Give us your local favourites - which artists are a common feature on your playlist? (AJ): Right now on my playlist you will find: Simphiwe Dana, Jimmy Dludlu, Themba Mkhize, and Kabomo. (tT): As someone who knows nothing about Ayanda, what can I expect from VIC? (AJ): Expect something never really done in South African music; expect quality on a different scale - music with great content and yet a pleasure to listen to!

Suspect arrested Quick response after confession leads to arrest Primrose police arrested a 35-year-old man suspected of being in possession of stolen property. While on patrol on Barbara Road on Saturday 31 May at 3:30am, police noticed a man carrying four garden chairs. On questioning him, the male confessed that he had stolen them at Marlands. The man was then arrested and brought to Primrose police station for detention. He appeared at Germiston Court and the matter was remanded for trial.

An 18-year-old male suspect was arrested following a report by a victim who alleged that, while walking down Rietfontein Road during the day, he was approached by two men who threatened him with a sharp object and took his cell phone. While still in shock, the victim alerted a passing police patrol vehicle and informed the police what had happened. The police chased the suspects and managed to corner one and arrest him. Police are adamant that the second suspect will soon be brought to book. The Primrose SAPS Management commends their members for their quick response and efforts to make speedy arrests.

Drunk suspect causes mayhem in police cells

Primrose police recently arrested a 44-year-old man suspected of being in possession of stolen property. They were patrolling Senator Road when they spotted two men carrying heavy bags and decided to search them. When the suspects realised that the police were approaching them, they started running in different directions. The police then chased them and cornered one. He was searched and found to be in possession of a gate-motor, and, when they questioned him, was unable to explain where the motor was from and why he ran from SAPS members. The police arrested him and brought him to Primrose SAPS station for detention. He appeared at Germiston Court and the matter was remanded for trial.

Primrose police arrested a suspect aged 34 years on Friday 30 May for malicious damage to state property. The suspect was initially picked up on the street because he was so drunk that he was causing problems for the community. While in the police holding cells, he allegedly became violent and broke a table belonging to the state that was valued at around R5000. The suspect was then charged with malicious damage to state property and detained. He appeared at Germiston court and the matter was remanded for trial.

Boyfriend arrested for domestic violence Primrose police arrested a 30-year-old suspect for assault with the intent to cause bodily harm. The suspect was arrested after the alleged victim (his girlfriend) said she was with him at Makause informal settlement when they had an argument. The woman said she sustained injuries after her boyfriend assaulted her on the head with a stone and was taken to hospital

by ambulance. After being discharged from hospital, she laid a charge with the police and the boyfriend was traced and immediately arrested. Police have appealed to the community to seek help when relationships turn sour instead of taking the law into their own hands. The suspect will appear at Germiston Court soon.

New SA regulations for Break the silence on travelling with kids domestic violence *Supplied by e-travel.

In the best interest of South Africa’s security and allow for efficient management of migration

South Africa’s immigration laws have recently undergone an intense revision with newly appointed Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba saying the amendments are “in the best interests of South Africa’s security and allow for efficient management of migration”. The Department also expressed concern about the growing issue of child trafficking and has announced new requirements for adults travelling with children. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Parents travelling with children will now be requested to provide an unabridged birth certificate of all travelling children. This applies even when both parents are travelling with their children and it also applies to foreigners and South Africans alike. When children are travelling with guardians, these adults are required to produce affidavits from their parents proving permission for the children to travel with them. The following are the new South African immigration regulations concerning travelling with children: REGULATION 6: (12) (a) Where parents are travelling with a child, such parents must produce an unabridged birth certificate of the child reflecting the particulars of the parents of the child. (b) In the case of one parent travelling with a child, he or she must produce an unabridged birth certificate and(i) consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent registered as a parent on the birth certificate of the child authorising him or her to enter into or depart from the Republic with the child he or she is travelling with; (ii) a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child, if he or she is the parent or legal guardian of the child; or (iii) where applicable, a death certificate of the other parent registered as a parent of the child on the birth certificate; Provided that the Director-General may, where the parents of the child are both deceased and the child is travelling with a relative or another

person related to him or her or his or her parents, approve such a person to enter into or depart from the Republic with such a child. (c) Where a person is travelling with a child who is not his or her biological child, he or she must produce(i) a copy of the unabridged birth certificate of the child; (ii) an affidavit from the parents or legal guardian of the child confirming that he or she has permission to travel with the child; (iii) copies of the identity documents or passports of the parents or legal guardian of the child; and (iv) the contact details of the parents or legal guardian of the child, Provided that the Director-General may, where the parents of the child are both deceased and the child is travelling with a relative or another person related to him or her or his or her parents, approve such a person to enter into or depart from the Republic with such a child. (d) Any unaccompanied minor shall produce to the immigration officer(i) proof of consent from one of or both his or her parents or legal guardian, as the case may be, in the form of a letter or affidavit for the child to travel into or depart from the Republic: Provided that in the case where one parent provides proof of consent, that parent must also provide a copy of a court order issued to him or her in terms of which he or she has been granted full parental responsibilities and rights in respect of the child; (ii) a letter from the person who is to receive the child in the Republic, containing his or her residential address and contact details in the Republic where the child will be residing;

Growthpoint a green star Growthpoint Properties’ custom-developed industrial and office facility for multinational group Grundfos in Meadowbrook, Germiston has been awarded a 5-Star Green Star SA Office Design v1 rating by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). Engelbert Binedell; Growthpoint Properties Industrial Division Head, said “From design to construction and operation, sustainable development was a key priority for Growthpoint and Grundfos.” The rating, he says, is even more meaningful as it has been achieved in conjunction

with Grundfos, a company that is fully committed to environmental sustainability. “By working with our clients to understand their businesses and their property needs, we can deliver tailored cutting-edge green facilities with competitive rentals, without compromising quality.” Growthpoint is also in the JSE’s Socially Responsible Investment Index for its positive environmental, social and economic sustainability practices and corporate governance. “As a property company that owns a number of properties in our list of more than 50 Green Star certified projects, Growthpoint has yet

again risen to the challenge with the Grundfos development in Germiston,” said Brian Wilkinson; CEO of GBCSA. When developing the environmentally-innovative facility, Growthpoint’s brief from Grundfos was to consolidate its warehousing and offices into a new facility on a single property that would improve productivity and cost savings. The Meadowbrook building is a 10,000sqm state-of-the-art facility that seamlessly integrates 3,500m² of office space and 6,500m² of high-spec warehousing.

So let’s start by defining gossip so that we progress from the same page, lets us an elementary example so that no one is left behind – if it has nothing to do with you, if you don’t have first had facts, if it is not your news to share then it is probably better that you keep your silence about it. Gossip is a weakness, but ironically gossip mongers feel that the possession of ‘information’, no matter how ill-accurate or malicious it is, is something empowering - There is no greater lie, gossip has only one purpose, and that is to distract people who have nothing better to do and no better way to deal with the feeling of insufficiency. The other irony with gossip is that it is a phenomenon which plagues relationships which are meant to be solid. Friends, colleagues and even families fall prey to this destructive pastime and more surprising is that for as long as the human race has been in existence, there have been in lessons learnt from mistakes – learning lends itself to growing , but it seems we are remaining primitive when it comes to gossip. I mean the facts are clear; nothing you say about me will remain undisclosed – we have all seen the total disintegration of seemingly solid relations due to a loose tongue. Due to the workplace being the place where we spend the major part of the day, workplace gossip can lend itself to severe stress and depression not only for the gossiper, or the receiver or the subject of the corridor chatter. Innovation, productivity, creativity and camaraderie also take a severe knock and often lead to a corporate depression which can easily be identified by employee dissatisfaction and an unstable environment. It was Socrates who said “strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and weak minds discuss people” With gossip at the workplace place, the organisation runs a serious risk of bleeding itself weak, whether the subject is customers or colleagues, because ultimately (when it inevitably comes out) it compromises the image of the company, it reputation and eventually the bottom-line. It is dangerous for leaders to ignore the signs of a deteriorating business culture. Strong teams do not just appear out of nowhere, strong teams are a direct result of strong leadership. From savings despair to dream holiday delight – R100 at a time Saving means different things to different people. But for most South Africans, the word still conjures up negative sentiments such as grudge, guilt and despair. That is because savings automatically translates into a sense of self-deprivation. There seems to be a notion that one first has to give up a certain item of luxury or reward in order to free up money to save. But this need not be the case, and saving can in fact become a part of your life, with minimal effort. How can you achieve this? … Suggests you either jot down your daily shopping purchases as you make them, or assess your bank statements at the end of the month. In this way you can best see where you are spending your money. This exercise is likely to shock you when you see exactly how much you’re spending, and where your hard-earned money is going. While many consumers complain that they do not have any money to spare at the end of the month, they will often easily spend money on non-essential items. A couple of

burgers in a month would set you back say R200, you will buy a new pair of shoes on sale for R200, you will pick up a quick takeaway coffee on your way to work, and of course the latest CD by your favourite artist for R150 – and already you have spent around R600. So while we readily spoil ourselves, if we break down our purchases, it becomes much easier to find even just R100 extra a month. You can achieve a lot by saving R100 per month; calculations show that by putting away R100 in a savings product at a realistic five percent interest rate, you will have saved R1 227 by the end of year one. That increases to R6 781 after five years, and R15 436 after ten years. A saving of R500 a month shows even better results: it grows to R6136in year one, R33 907 by year five and R77 182 by year 10. This shows you that you do not have to put away a lot every month to save. By just cutting out small items, you can grow your savings substantially. Personalities in the workplace By Colleen Qvist Individuals think, feel and behave differently and each one’s unique combination of characteristics or qualities forms his or her distinctive personality or character. Differences in people, especially at work (but also at home) can lead to problems because they can cause sub-optimal performance. We spend our time concentrating on our differences and being irritated by them, as opposed to celebrating our differences because we understand them. A group made up of people with different personalities is much stronger than a group of people who are all the same. The word personality comes from the Latin word persona and means “mask”. In the ancient Latin-speaking world, masks were worn in theatre to show a person’s character and not to cover it up. There are numerous personality theories and ways of testing personality and this article is not meant to be an in-depth look at theories or tests. Instead, it is a way of looking at personalities so you can recognise and understand the differences and thereby cope better. As with anything in life, it is always better to start with understanding yourself. What is your personality? Why do you think, feel and

behave as you do? When you can recognise personality traits in yourself and understand them, it is easier to widen your observations to other people. One way of categorising personality is the analytical/driver/ amiable/expressive test. Of course people are unique and so their personalities often do not fit squarely into one category but may overlap others. You can take a quiz http://www.retaildoc.com/ retailerresources/personality-test to see which one you are. Compare your findings with those of your friends and colleagues. Each personality type has both strengths and potential weaknesses. Official Airport App launched Amy-Mae Campbell @Amzymaeq twitter.com

On 12 June 2014, Airports Company South Africa launched its official Airports App. This free and user-friendly app was developed to assist travellers with navigating at airports, and allows passengers to make travel arrangements from their smart devices. The app is the first step towards an innovative, virtual airport service that will improve travel efficiency. “The objective of the app was to streamline and personalise the airport journey for passengers that are more empowered than ever before. We want to keep customers connected and we want to do it one step at a time. With this app we would like to connect the passenger to all information in our airport,” explained Airports Company South Africa Group Manager Customer Care, Claudia Ramsden. In addition to expediting airline and parking reservations, the app provides users with convenient tools to find shops and restaurants, airline, travel and traffic information, weather reports and customer care details. It will also assist passengers with planning alternative transport. Passengers travelling to Gauteng may synchronise with the Gautrain timetable as well. Currently, the app is downloadable on Apple IOS, Android and Blackberry devicesexcluding the Q and Z series. According to research conducted by Airports Company South Africa, 70% of the browsing traffic is on the IOS platform. The first phase of the app was therefore targeted at these user-platforms. Further improvements and additions to the current app can be downloaded via update notifications. The app is already available for download. Airports Company South Africa partnered with the Digital Solutions Group, University of Johannesburg faculty members and students in the IT- and engineering fields to present this new application. “The reality today is that the mobile device is something that will stay in aviation and will most probably become the predominant means of communicating with the passenger, but also giving a lot of the control back to the passenger. We actually control the journey; information around the journey and through that from checking yourself in, to following the process through the airport. In terms of the fast travel initiative, I think the South African aviation industry needs to embrace that we want to stay relevant in the world. The rest of the world is going self-service, and we want to make sure that we are not left behind. OR Tambo wants to maintain that standard,” concluded Andre Vermeulen, Acting Executive Airport Director.

A screenshot of the Airports App AIRPORTS APP FEATURES: • Flights: Search for flights can be done via a flight number or an advanced search option as well as checking in online. Once the flight is activated, any changes related to the flight will be visible to the passenger on their mobile device. • At the Airport: A list of the airlines that operate at the respective airports, as well as their contact numbers are provided. There is also a list of frequently asked information and contact details of the Customer Care department as well as the airport. Users will have access to a map of the airport developed in conjunction with TomTom and Micello Indoor Maps. This allows the passenger to search for, and be routed to, a location at the airport. Parking options and other information such as a parking cost calculator are also available. Weather updates of conditions at the airport are sent through on an hourly basis. • Shop and Dine: A selection of restaurants and shops to choose from can be searched either by category, terminal or name. A currency calculator is also available. • To and From the Airport: Traffic updates mean travellers can plan their trip to the airport more effectively. Also, there are listings and contact details of the car rental companies, Gautrain, taxis, and shuttle services. For more information about Airports Company South Africa’s Airports App, visit www.airports.co.za or phone the Customer Care line on +27 (0)86 727 7888. Ever since the launch of the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), in 1992, South Africa has maintained dominance over the golf tournament. On Thursday 12 June, a South African women’s amateur team again claimed success in Africa’s most prestigious biennial championship. Magda Kruger, Michaela Fletcher and Cara Gorlei showed the same tenacity, commitment and determination as their predecessors to ensure the country’s successful title defence at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi. Rounds of 146, 148 and 148 by the South African trio secured an 11 stroke victory on a winning score of 442. Kenya, who was under huge pressure from Tanzania, managed a second place finish with a score of 453 while third placed Tanzania finished on 456. Michaela Fletcher also claimed the Individual Competition on seven-over-par 220 after carding rounds of 79, 73 and 68, which was also the lowest round of the tournament. “We are very proud of this team, who did an exceptionally good job against some very tough opponents,” said Womens Golf South Africa president, Karen Olivant. “Michaela and Cara both contributed two great rounds to boost our chances and Magda was the only player in the tough

par-three field. I am very proud of their performance and they were fantastic ambassadors for South Africa and Womens Golf South Africa.” TEAM RESULT 442 (+16) South Africa 146 148 148 453 (+27) Kenya 145 157 151 456 (+30) Tanzania 156 150 150 CUMULATIVE INDIVIDUAL RESULT 220 (+7) Michaela Fletcher (RSA) 225 (+12) Cara Gorlei (RSA) 226 (+13) Josephine Ainley (KEN)

Proteas take on Scotland in 93 medals for SA at African Youth Games preparation for Commonwealth Games

The second African Youth Games took place in Gaborone (Botswana) this year from 22 – 31 May 2014. The inaugural African Youth Games were held in Morocco in 2010. Over the 9-day period of the games, the city of Gaborone was home to 2 500 athletes representing 54 African nations. South Africa sent a team representing 19 sporting codes to fulfill the hopes and dreams of the country, while preparing for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in

Nanjing, China later this year. Team South Africa returned from the game with a total of 93 medals including 27 bronze medals, 25 silver and 41 gold medals. South Africa’s Athletics team, which made up the largest group sent to the games, collected a total of 12 medals. Our swimmers secured 26 medals overall with 13 golds, and our sevens rugby team made light of opposition on their way to a gold medal and games championship status.

SPAR Proteas squad: Zanele Mdodana, Chrisna van Zyl, Erin Burger, Karla Mostert, Adele Niemand, Maryka Holtzhausen, Melissa Myburgh, Lenize Potgieter, Bongi Msomi, Precious Mthembu, Kefiloe Tsotetsi and Phumza Maweni. The success of the five-week Brutal Fruit Netball Cup will be put to the test later this month when the Spar national netball team plays a three-Test series against Scotland in Cape Town between June 19 and June 21. “It is a very opportune time for us to play this series,” says Netball South Africa (NSA) President Mimi Mthethwa. “We have just finished the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup, and this series gives us a chance to see how the players have progressed. Also, with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July our big focus for this year, we will be able to try out the team and see how prepared the players are for the challenge ahead of them.” According to head coach of the Spar national team Elize Kotze, “The Scotland series is an ideal opportunity to expose young players to international netball.” “Lenise Potgieter is a very talented young player. She’s only 20, but she showed great

maturity during the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup, standing up against experienced defenders like Karla Mostert and Adele Niemand. She has an amazing reach, and she plays very like Irene van Dyk,” said Kotze. The team to play against Scotland – which gained three new caps after the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup final on Sunday - will to a large extent be the team that will represent South Africa at the Commonwealth Games. Scotland is ranked 13th by the International Netball Federation, while South Africa are ranked sixth. The two teams are in different pools at the Commonwealth Games, with Scotland coming up against New Zealand, Jamaica, Malawi, Northern Ireland and St Lucia; while South Africa are grouped with Australia, England, Wales, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados. “If we win all three Tests against Scotland, we will move up to fifth in the world rankings,” said Kotze.

Pitbull’s pants steal World Cup 2014 Opening show Ndu Ngwenya

@nduzo twitter.com

Thursday 12 June marked the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Acknowledged as the world’s greatest sporting event, the World Cup, currently in its 20th instalment, hosted an opening game which, judging by its more than 600 tweets per minute generated, lived up to this claim. The tournament’s opening game saw Brazil, ranked third in the world, take on Croatia, the 18th ranked in the world; Brazil beat Croatia 3 – 1, much to the excitement of the home crowd at the Sao Paulo. The opening ceremony of the 2014 World Cup, like all other preceding tournaments, was also

tan event many looked forward to witnessing. Before the actual event at the packed Stadium began, there was plenty of speculation on whether American artist Jennifer Lopez (J-Lo) would be making an appearance to perform the Official World Cup Song – “We are one (Ole Ole).” She finally appeared but her moment was soon stolen by her fellow performer - Colombian star; Armando Christian Pérez (Pitbull) who wore tight white pants. J-Lo, Pitbull and Brazilian singer Claudie Leitte closed the opening ceremony, making way for the main event. All 61,600 tickets reserved for the opening encounter which was also attended by several celebrities and heads of states were sold.

OFF THE PITCH

The Captain It is great news to hear that Cricket South Africa has appointed Hashim Amla as the new Proteas Captain. I was quite surprised to hear this news, as By Craig Norris I had mentioned previously that I was sure that AB De Villiers would be the obvious choice, with Faf Du Plessis being appointed as the Vice-Captain for South Africa. As per media statements in the past months, Amla would have seemed not to be interested in leading his country. However, I am sure that he will do a great job, as long as he gets the support from all the players and management in the Protea Camp. Amla is no stranger to leading a team, as he has always been at the helm, in terms of his early years as a captain of his school and provincial teams. The responsibility of being captain of your country, however, is totally different and it throws out plenty of curve balls at you. It is not a case of just putting on the national blazer and cap while standing on the pitch and spinning the coin before a test match. He will, as Graeme Smith experienced in his time, need all the help possible in not only guiding the team on the field, but also facing the national media across the world. There will be good times and there will be bad times in terms of results achieved; and as a captain you are ultimately accountable for all the decision-making. The off-field responsibilities of a captain in the modern game are massive and include facing the media at after- match conferences and team promotions. Many a Test player has folded under this type of pressure after a bad day on the field. I would like to think that Amla has all the qualities that a skipper needs to overcome all the hurdles that lie ahead. He is quite laid-back and has never shown any emotions while piling on the runs for South Africa. Hopefully this calmness will remain and that Amla will be the skipper that takes the Proteas back to the top of the rankings. Sri Lanka will be the first task and then Zimbabwe, with the West Indies in the New Year.
