Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za Little Eden Home for the Physically and Mentally Handicapped in Edenvale is in dire straits and needs a miracle if it is to continue serving the community as it has for the past 47 years. But the home’s staff remain hopeful that help will come, explaining that the establishment was started by a miracle in 1967. The late Domitilla Hyams, who founded the home with her husband Danny Hyams, said the idea for Little Eden came from a vision of Jesus, Who compelled her to open the special facility for the community’s “angels,” as she called the residents. Her chronicles of Little Eden are recorded in her book A Little Paradise. Hyams said in her vision Jesus had no hands and she believed this was because He wanted her to be His hands and to care for His people. Little Eden marketing and communications officer Nicholette Muthige confirmed that the home was in a crisis situation. She explained that the Department of Health had suddenly and without warning informed the home that it would be paying the children’s subsidies at the end of each month instead of at the beginning, as it had always done in the past. This left management having to find around R900 000 to fill the gap until the money came in again. She said it cost around R8 400 to support each resident. From Our Extra Large Coffee Shop Watermelon

You might have watched The Flight Before Christmas. It’s a cartoon about a little reindeer Niko, who must step up as a Christmas reindeer and learn to fly. In one scene, he sits poised at the edge of a snow cliff, in a predicament. One of the older, wiser reindeers comforts him with these words: “You didn’t come here to fall … you came here to fly”. As it were, the challenge Niko faced was the very thing that made him reach deep within to find the faith he needed to fly. The approach of the festive season is regarded with different feelings by different

people. Some call it “the silly season” and thrive on the endless parties and late nights. They can be identified by the big, silly grins on their faces. For other people, the festive season brings with it a gamut of emotions and questions. Many find themselves in the kind of predicament Niko found himself in. Little Eden Home for the Mentally and Physically Disabled is facing a crisis (see page 1) and needs a miracle to stay up and running. They’re one of many charity organizations affected by the current economic climate. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Household Consumers League in Bedfordview (see page 4), I was told about a former member’s son who needed urgent medical intervention for his kidney. Already miracles are unfolding in his life… when a kidney he received from a donor ten years ago started giving problems, his work colleague offered to give him her kidney. Now he is awaiting the transplant. The end of the year has a way of reminding us of our own personal challenges. But if you find yourself in a precarious or challenging situation as Niko did, take heart: “You didn’t come here to fall … you came here to fly.”
A toast to
Portugal!
Portuguese culture was honoured at a Lisbon Region wine-tasting event held at Adega, Hawley Road, Bedfordview on Wednesday last week. Esteemed wine experts, some from Portugal itself, attended the evening of sumptuous food and wine, among them wine connoisseur Neil Pendock, Portuguese wine expert and importer Miguel Grijo and Wine Ventures marketing expert Catarina Habler Rente. Sipping on a glass of Portuguese wine, Pendock said he believed one of the greatest tragedies in history was the decision of the Portuguese not to settle in South Africa, but to move on to the East in the 1500s. “The Portuguese are great people and I believe we could have advanced faster economically and socially, had they decided to settle and make this their home as they did Mozambique,” he said. Pendock has gleaned his knowledge of wine from 25 years of working in the industry and writing regular pieces for a well-known national paper. For the past five years, he has also travelled to Portugal, studying and tasting its wines and compiling an annual Portuguese

wine guide. He explained that Portugal, like South Africa, had been a “naughty boy” in the wine industry for many years because of political circumstances in the country but that liberation movements in both countries had impacted the wine industry and both countries were fast making a come-back. Grijo explained that he had visited South Africa over 20 times, and chose to import wine to our country because South African consumers are knowledgeable. He said the Adega restaurant was an example of how Portugal and South Africa could work together to touch the hearts – and appetites – of the local community.

Diana-Lebo Phalula had plenty to celebrate at the Spar Grand Prix Awards where she was handed the keys to a brand-new Nissan Micra. Phalula became the fifth person to win the Grand Prix title, finishing the five-race Spar Women’s Challenge series with a total of 110 points. Her achievement was particularly remarkable as she had been troubled with a hamstring injury for much of the year. However, her record-breaking wins in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and her top five finishes in Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg ensured that no one was able to overtake her on the Grand Prix ladder. Her twin sister, Lebogang, also claimed two titles, winning in Durban and Johannesburg; but a poor finish in Cape Town, where she came 17th, meant that two other runners, Rene Kalmer and Mapaseka Makhanya, finished ahead of her on the Grand Prix table. Kalmer and Makhanya were both proof that consistency of performance is valuable in the Grand Prix.
It was the first time in many years that Kalmer, three-times Grand Prix winner, finished in the top eight in all five races, earning her 81 points, three ahead of last year’s title holder, Makhanya, whose lowest finish was seventh. In fact, the difference between Makhanya and Kalmer came down to Kalmer having finished second in Port Elizabeth and third in Durban, while Makhanya’s best position was third in Port Elizabeth. Lebogang Phalula finished with 77 points. Irvette van Zyl, twice Grand Prix winner and victor in Pretoria, finished in fifth position, with 74 points. “I’m so excited about winning the car. It’s the biggest thing I’ve ever won,” said DianaLebo Phalula. “The thought of winning a car also makes it easier to get up on a cold morning, when you don’t feel like training.” Deputy Minister of Sport and Recreation, Gert Oosthuizen (left) and Mike Prentice, Spar Group Marketing Executive (right) hand the car keys to Diana-Lebo Phalula during the Spar Grand Prix Awards.* Photo by Reg
Caldecott.
Phalula said she would dedicate 2015 to trying to qualify for the five thousand and ten thousand metre events at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. “I also want to break the South African record next year,” she said. “I will share the car with my sister – we’re twins, and what’s mine is hers,” added Phalula. Lebogang Phalula said she was delighted

that she would be sharing the car, and would use her prize money to support her sister and help pay for petrol and insurance for the vehicle. Boxer clinched the club competition, ending years of dominance by Nedbank. Boxer finished with 248 points, followed by Transnet, with 158. Maxed Elite came third, with 111, and Nedbank fourth, with 82.
