Firefighters battle Primrose blaze Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za A structural fire erupted in Capricorn Court, a block of flats in Capricorn Street, Primrose early last Friday morning. There were no injures or fatalities; however, due to the heavy winds occurring on the day, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services struggled to extinguish the fire. William Ntladi, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson said, “The call came through at 7:20 in the morning. Both Primrose and Bedfordview Fire Departments responded
TOUGH CALL: The Ekurhuleni firefighters managed to extinguish the fire at Capricorn Court, despite heavy winds.
to the call. The fire started in the corner flat on the second floor and spread to the flat on the right. Due to the heavy winds the fire spread quickly. The fire was eventually contained due to the hard work and dedication of the two departments, despite extremely windy conditions. One of the occupants of the room in which the fire started was not present at the time of the fire, and the other managed to escape. Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Managment supplied blankets and food parcels to the affected residents.

Rotary explores the world of bird intelligence At their last meeting, “Being called ‘birdthe popular speaker brained’ is quite a Clive Hopcroft compliment.” introduced the Rotary Club of Knights-Pendragon to the entrancing world of birds. Using an entertaining mix of text, stills, video films and verbal descriptions - nicely laced with humour - they were introduced to these prehistoric dinosaurs, gliders that were unable to flap their wings. Originally from England, Clive Hopcroft is a lecturer in Ornithology, a Bird Guide who leads trips locally and abroad, an author and wildlife artist. To him, being called “birdbrained” is quite a compliment. “The term ‘intelligence’ is usually used to describe humans’ ability to learn, but this is only the human’s ability to recall thought knowledge and not true intelligence,” said Clive. “Birds learn from copying socalled bird ‘professors.’ The ‘students’ then also exhibit the behaviour. The true show of intelligence came from the original bird that solved the problem.” Birds have learnt to use various tools to assist them in acquiring food. They use rocks to open eggs, shells and nuts. Some birds use various lengths of sticks to poke grubs out of wood and even use the principle of leverage to strip tough bark from trees. According to Clive, this shows that birds have an understanding of subjects covered in high school. In modern times, Blue Tits have learned to open metal foil tops on milk bottles and the crow family has even progressed to dropping stones into open bottles, to raise the level of the milk so that they can reach it. Japanese crows have turned urban traffic to their advantage. They drop acorns on zebra crossings so that cars can crush their hard shells, and then wait for the cars to stop so that they can collect their prizes. Two students, says Hopcroft, have even observed a Moorhen sitting on eggs in a nest and covering herself with a piece of plastic as protection against heavy rain. The Rotary Club of Knights-Pendragon meet in Bedfordview on Wednesday evenings and, in addition to serving the communities of Edenvale/ Bedforview, they frequently invite speakers on a huge variety of subjects that are sometimes educational, sometimes serious and sometimes light-hearted, but always entertaining. For more information on Rotary please contact Andy Stevenson on 082 389 0256.

Leukaemia survivor honoured Bem Bom in Bedfordview was packed to capacity last week when a ladies’ breakfast fundraiser was hosted by the Manny de Freitas Foundation (MdFF). This event was in support of the fight against cancer, in particular leukaemia. One of the MdFF’s objectives is to work towards contributing to the decrease of cancers. Information and education in this regard plays an important role. Ladies at the breakfast were entertained by belly dancer Tarryn Rego - some ladies even joined her on the floor. An auction was held and leukaemia survivor Ana Nathaniel, who is still undergoing treatment, was honoured. MdFF CEO, Jeanette de Freitas said that Nathaniel’s courage and determination is an example to everyone - irrespective of whether one is a survivor or not. “We plan to use our events as an education opportunity”, explained De Freitas. She said that there are still too many people who are misinformed and also people who lack information and, therefore, understanding about cancer.

The mountain Never accept needs us help at an ATM Clr Jill Humphreys organised a Bill Steward Nature Reserve mountain clean-up this past Sunday. Community members met at the entrance at Hilltop Road Gate, Dawnview and spent the day picking up rubbish. “It has been a while since we did a mountain cleanup; and our absence has left its mark,” said Humphreys. “The Residents Action Group Bedfordview report that was carried out last month proves this. During this time the new fence was damaged - firstly by a vehicle going through it (apparently by accident) and then by sections of the fence being
r e m o v e d piecemeal,” Humphreys said. R e s i d e n t s were urged to bring garbage bags, buckets, protective gloves and spades for the hard work. Students who assisted received community service certificates and the volunteers were protected by a security guard, who escorted them through the area. For more information please contact Clr Jill Humphreys on 082 450 0128.
Residents Group sweeps Bill Steward In order to uncover hidden stolen goods or other evidence of criminal activity, Bedfordview Residents Action Group recently conducted a sweep of Bill Steward Nature Reserve. According to spokesman Mr C. Nortman, “There were no signs of criminal activity evident and no arrests were made during the sweep. The situation will, however, be monitored. We found that there was old building material dumped in the nature reserve. Dumping of materials is still continuing due to the gate being open.” Nortman also said, “We found that the nature reserve was dirty, with lots of papers, plastics, empty food containers and items of clothing lying around in the bushes and in between the rocks. In certain areas of the reserve ashes and coal were found, showing that a fire was made in the reserve. During the operation, a lot of people were spotted coming from Kloof Road, going up towards the mountain, using it as a thoroughfare. This is an ongoing concern, as it is also a quick escape route for criminals.” More sweeps will be done in future, said the Bedfordview Residents Action Group.

ROARING FUN: Male white lion triplet Letaba is the main instigator of pranks. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is ecstatic after acquiring lion cub triplets Letaba, Sabi and Jubba, born on 12 April 2014, and donated to the Johannesburg Zoo by a farm in Thabazimbi. The playful triplets, one male and two females, which have just come out of quarantine and been given a clean bill of health, are on view to visitors at the zoo. The media thoroughly enjoyed meeting the trio last Wednesday, taking full advantage of great photo opportunities in the enclosure and observing the playful antics of the cubs, especially those of the white-furred Letaba, who took the opportunity of grabbing a journalist’s notebook when it was left on a rock. It was only after being given a few pieces of meat that Letaba was eventually persuaded to let go of the book. The popular Anglo Gold Lion enclosure has been fitted to meet the specific needs of the new cubs, which will form a critical part of the zoo’s conservation and education
Manny de Freitas MP, Shadow Minister of Transport, writes
programmes. “We are so excited to have the lion cubs. It has been over five years since the zoo has had cubs and our adult lions are ageing. These cubs are of a new bloodline, which will ensure the continuation of the species in our collection,” said Agnes Maluleke, the curator responsible for the management of the big cats at the Joburg Zoo. The zoo currently has seven adult lions that have outlived their natural life expectancy for the wild and have not bred in the past five years. The new cubs will offer visitors to the zoo another opportunity to contribute to conservation, while providing residents with a game reserve experience on their doorstep.

The more replies I receive from the Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, to questions I posed her, the more muddled she shows how the e-tolls issue really is. I asked the Minister about what criteria and reasons are used to include people with disabilities in the paying of e-tolls. People with disabilities are forced to pay e-tolls. This is over and above the very high costs that these people already pay for their mobility. As someone who was confined to a wheelchair for a number of months after a

On 24 January 2011 a representative of the Toronto Police said, “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised”. This level of victim blaming, from the very organisations charged with protecting the public, inspired global outrage. Slutwalk started in Canada and has since grown to include more than 100 cities around the world. You don’t have to identify with or even approve of the word “slut” to support this movement. There has been no further commitment in this regard. This is an example of how e-tolls is not only a financial burden but is also a heartless one that does not care.

Planning your Dream Wedding
Every woman dreams of a beautiful fairytale wedding. The wedding dress is usually the first item on any bride’s checklist. However, there are many other aspects that need to be planned in advance, such as the venue, a preacher and the wedding contract. Here are a few pointers to guide you. Remember, planning a wedding is a big project that involves a lot of money; the more organised you are, the better the outcome will be. Bruidsgids 2013 gives the following pointers:
CONGRATULATIONS: tame TIMES layout artist Stephanie Tepper married Pieter Els this past weekend. Everyone at tame TIMES wishes Mr and Mrs Els a beautiful life together.
1) Research costs first and establishes how much you are, realistically, willing to spend. 2) Prioritise: the venue sets the date and place, and venues are often booked in advance. It is therefore a good idea to sort this out first. The wedding dress is something that you can leave until approximately six or four months to the date, to make sure that the dress will fit you. If you order a dress that has to be shipped in from overseas, you must leave enough time for shipping. Sometimes the dress is too expensive to buy at once and you might want to pay monthly installments over a period of time. 3) Dividing the costs: who is willing to contribute to your wedding? If you can establish this early on, then you can budget and allocate tasks to the various contributors. 4) When you book a photographer, it is wise to do a practice photo-session to determine
whether you are satisfied with the style. Many couples use the same photographer for their engagement shoot to make sure that they are satisfied with the result. The last thing you want is to feel unhappy when you receive your final photographs. At the end of the day, photographs and video memories are all you have left. 5) Do not spend money saved for the wedding. This will set you back and you may struggle to make your budget work. 6) Lastly, remember to have fun. The journey to the chapel should be a rewarding and exciting experience for the bride and groom. Do not let the wedding overshadow the real meaning of the day; that you and your partner are vowing everlasting love to each other. The wedding is a mere celebration of this commitment.
Finding the perfect dress According to BuzzFeed, there a few things that brides need to look for in a perfect wedding dress: 1) Have an idea of what you want. 2) Start fitting dresses early on, but not too long in advance, because the dress may not fit if you have gained or lost weight. 3) Prepare a detailed design of your wedding dress if you are having it made. 4) Be clear about your budget. Also, make sure to ask whether a dress you like is imported from overseas or not, as this will influence the price substantially. 5) Choose an honest panel of dress judges. 6) Try the dress on with your heels, so that the length can be adjusted if necessary. 7)Compare the dress colour and material to your complexion. Different shades of white go with different skin tones. 8) Make sure what the return policy is – just in case. You only wear it once, so enjoy every moment.

Rethink Tradition
Try cocktails in lieu of tea, barbecue instead of buttered scones. Think about themes:

The Basics Why spend your Saturday afternoon yawning over the ribbon bouquet when you can hang with a crowd far more entertaining than Mom’s country-club friends? Go ahead and attend those must-attend functions, but think about putting together a party that includes the guys too. Here’s the dirt on throwing a Jack & Jill party.
The Idea
A couple shower is closer to a cocktail or dinner party than it is to a bridal shower. Female and male relatives, as well as close friends, are invited. The party still revolves around gifts, but they’re presented to both the bride and the groom, and generally they are a mix of home goods and guyfriendly gadgets. The shower can range from an afternoon barbecue at your parents’ place to a cocktail party at your favorite restaurant or bar. There are no hard-and-fast rules about planning, though, so do what feels best.
The Guest List
You might want to limit the guest list to the couple’s contemporaries who consider girl/boy proximity a given. Steer clear of people who may be offended by a coed shower, but don’t neglect loved ones who wouldn’t want to miss out on these festivities.

Cash in bank but no delivery Primrose police recently arrested a 50-year-old suspect for fraud at Homestead, after he allegedly persuaded a businessman to deposit R43 000 in his account for machinery parts that he never delivered. The fraud victim complained that the accused’s cellphone had been on voicemail ever since he deposited the money into his bank account. Detectives followed up the matter, however, and the suspect was arrested. The police are appealing to the community to be extra careful when entering into contracts. The suspect will appear at Germiston Court soon.
Primrose police recently arrested two 27-year-old suspects for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm at Makause and Marathon informal settlements. The first unprovoked assault occurred at Makause. The victim alleged that, after meeting the suspect, the latter asked him who he thought he was. When he failed to respond, the suspect took out a sharp object from a pocket and stabbed him on his upper body several times. The second incident happened at Marathon informal settlement. The victim alleged that he was at his place with a friend when the accused entered and, without any provocation, took out a sharp object, grabbed the victim and stabbed him on his upper body. The police would like to remind the community that they have declared war against all criminality and that all suspects will be brought to book. Both suspects have appeared at Germiston Court, and both matters have been remanded for trial.
Panel beater arrested for stolen car
Primrose police recently arrested a 41-year-old suspect for possession of a stolen vehicle. The officer who was investigating the case visited an address in Jerusalem informal settlement outside Boksburg, where a suspect was initially arrested for car theft. The suspect pointed out his accomplice, who took the police to an address in Primrose where they found a vehicle which had been stolen in Hlogotlou, Limpopo in a panel beater’s shop. The colour of the vehicle had already been changed from white to yellow and the panel beater was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle. Police are appealing to the community to be careful when they enter into contracts, so as to avoid trouble with the law. The suspect has appeared at the Germiston Court and the matter was remanded for plea and trial.

Chiefs to clash with Pirates
Lebo Mosolodi lebo@tametimes.co.za
KICK-OFF:The MTN Top 8 final between Amakhosi and Amabhakabhaka is expected to be an interesting affair. The Soweto Derby Dream Cup final MTN Top Eight between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is set to take place on 20 September at a venue that has yet to be confirmed. Pirates and Chiefs showed little respect for other teams when they walloped their opponents with an avalanche of goals to book their place in the final. The Sea Robbers, as Pirates are affectionately called by their supporters, reached this point after walloping BidWits 3-1 at Orlando Stadium. Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus scored the opening goal, which was cancelled by Wits forward Getaneh Kebedi. Lehlohonolo Majoro came from the bench and scored two spectacular goals to make it 3-1 in favour of Orlando Pirates. Then the Bucs marched to the final on a 5-1 aggregate score.
Amakhosi continued their winning streak at the expense of Platinum Stars Football Club. George Maluleka scored a free kick goal spectacular to open a goal feast for the Naturena based team. Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane tapped in a second goal after getting an immaculate cross from his team-mate Tsepo Masilela. Katleho “Killer” Mphela put the final nail in the Dikwena’s coffin when he scored the third goal towards the end of the second half. The final score was 3-0 and the aggregate score was 5-0 in favour of Chiefs. The Premier Soccer League has advised soccer fanatics to buy their tickets in good time as both teams command huge fan bases. This is the first cup final in the new season between South Africa’s two main football powerhouses.

Daryl Impey, the first African to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, was cleared last Thursday of the doping allegations that shocked the world in July when it was announced that he had committed a doping violation by using a diuretic called Probenecid. In a statement posted by Daryl Impey on his personal website, the cyclist said, “I finally was able to prove that this was a case of cross-contamination and I was also cleared of any fault or negligence on my part.” At the hearing it was proved that Impey had taken the banned diuretic through a contaminated product bought at a pharmacist through no fault of his own. It has been reported by The Star that, while Impey was in Durban, he went to a pharmacy to buy empty gelatine capsules to fill with bicarbonate of soda, because bicarbonate of soda helps buffer the effects of lactic acid and he was planning to use this for the South African Road Race Championships. The pharmacist, however, told him he did not have any capsules in stock.Later, the pharmacist found some capsules and called Impey, who went back to buy them; but, shortly before serving Impey, the pharmacist had dispensed Probenecid to another customer and his hands had contaminated Impey’s capsules. At the hearing, till slips showing the time of purchase from the pharmacy convinced the hearing that Impey had not ingested the substance on purpose. tame TIMES spoke to Impey’s father, Tony Impey, owner of Tony Impey Cycles in Bedfordview last Friday. He said, “This is

NOT GUILTY: Daryl Impey was cleared of the doping allegations last Thursday. *Photo sourced from www.ballz.co.za. very good news; however, it has been trying. This is his (Daryl’s) life that has been put on hold.” He added that Impey was leaving for Canada the following night and was trying to get everything ready for his trip as well as being inundated with requests for interviews. Tony Impey thanked tame TIMES,“Thank you for believing in Daryl and supporting him.” tame TIMES was fortunate to speak to Impey on Saturday. “It is a huge relief. My name has been pulled through the mud,” he said. He explained that social media was the
worst, with many horrible messages written about him and to him. “I never responded but I did read them and it was hard to read them - especially knowing I was innocent,” Daryl Impey told tame TIMES. Impey said he has been training these past two months, although it was hard to focus with the allegations hanging over his head. When asked about the pharmacist, Impey said, “He was sorry for what he did and offered his assistance straight away, accepting responsibility.”
In his personal statement Impey thanked his wife, family and team ORICA-GreenEDGE, friends and fans who sent him kind, supportive messages during the ordeal. “I am thrilled that I could prove my innocence for all of you who stood by me.” The cyclist hopes to return to racing, and hopefully to compete before the World Championships in September. “I reiterate my stance against doping and I will continue to race clean throughout my career. Right now, I am just really happy that I can be a bike-rider again and do what I love most.”
Bowling greats bowl for charity Commonwealth gold medallists TracyLee Botha and Bobby Donnelly took part in the Accumolo Bowls challenge this past weekend, a competitive invitational bowls tournament held for charity.

medal winners. “I think it’s safe to say the cream of the crop of bowls players are present here,” said Neville with pride. The Pink Drive ladies were present throughout the proceedings, helping to raise awareness around breast cancer, as well as testicular and prostate cancer. They happily showed off their mobile units, which now consist of three trucks. The units are fully capable of performing the medical examination to help prevent these forms of cancer. Antoinette Joubert, corporate

relationship manager for the Pink Drive, said that it is events like this one that allow these units to raise awareness in different areas in South Africa. The branding throughout was coloured in honour of the event. The opening day was green, followed by a blue Saturday and finally a pink Sunday. According to Neville, the bowls community is very supportive of Accumolo and it is through their efforts that all this was made possible.
The bowls tournament is held over three days by Accumolo Consulting in association with the Pink Drive and the More Balls Than Most charity organisations. The tournament, which is now in its fourth year, and the second in collaboration with the Pink Drive, has always aimed to focus on charity. “The main objective of this tournament is to raise money and awareness for the prevention of cancer”, said the CEO of Accumolo Philip Neville. “Last year we managed to raise R210 000 rand and this year our goal is even higher.” Unusually, as compared to normal tournaments, there are five people in a team. The fifth member is a substitute who can be changed at any time. All players have to play at least 20 ends and the team has to include players of both genders. The tournament was purely invitational and several of the world’s best players were playing. This includes 20 international players, as well as eight Commonwealth BOWLING FOR CANCER: A competitor stays focussed in the bowling tournament.
