Roedolf Walker Roedolf.Walker@tametimes.co.za Last week Bedfordview experienced an extended water shortage which left many households, businesses and even hospitals without the life-giving fluid. The shortage began when the electricity to two major Rand Water pumps stopped and reservoirs in the area ran dry, leaving many Ekurhuleni suburbs without water. Where water was still present, low pressures in water pipes prevented the water from reaching households, with higher-lying areas being the worst affected. While those in low-lying areas were fortunate enough to receive a trickle of water, those living higher up were completely cut off from the supply. The sudden onset of water outages has destroyed trust in government’s ability to deliver services. It seems that no plans have been put forward to remedy the situation and that the authorities have not been able to cope with the challenges they face. John Moodey, Gauteng Caucus Leader of the DA, has stated that the enormity of the problem has been grossly understated. “The head of state should call the shortage a state of disaster so that it can be properly fixed and contingency plans be set in place,” Moodey said. Ordinary families have been adversely affected by the lack of water.

Roedolf Walker Roedolf.Walker@tametimes.co.za Without water, even the wealthiest of families struggle, with children suffering the most. Since sanitation facilities cannot work without water, the outages created an environment in which disease could spread like wildfire, and schools were forced to close due to their bathroom facilities being out of order. Water tankers were deployed to the areas most affected, but the number of trucks was quite low. The large scale of the problem put pressure on the municipal water tankers, as those being used in Bedfordview are also needed in Germiston and other areas. Private companies were enlisted to increase the supply, but this has also inflated the price tag attached to the problem. Johannesburg and its surrounding areas are not supplied by a major river, so the people in the area are totally at the mercy of Rand Water’s ability to pump water to them. Supplies of bottled water in some places dried up and left people with no alternative but to depend on the tankers that were only sporadically supplied. The cost to industries in the area is astronomical. When there is a power shortage, companies can resort to generators to supply power to their factories but without water everything grinds to a standstill. The greater

Ekurhuleni area is one of the largest industrial areas in South Africa and the cost to the economy of the current water outages cannot be understated. Without the factories, many workers will be left jobless – which will only compound the issues around the water shortage. “The loss in industry can have far reaching consequences,” said Fred Nel, DA Shadow MEC of Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements. “The apparent lack of infrastructure could scare away investors who would spend money in the local economy.” Thus far, communication lines between the public and authorities have been nearly non-existent. Metropolitan call centres give conflicting information about the duration, scope and severity of the problem and no other attempts to inform citizens were made. Rand Water’s Twitter account has not been used in more than a year. Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe, however, has commented as follows: “As Rand Water and Ekurhuleni engineers are continuously working around the clock to bring the situation back to normal, we wish to emphasize on our call to residents to assist the process by using the little available water sparingly.” Water to the Bedfordview area was restored on 27 September. Some areas of Primrose are still without the life-giving liquid, however.

Mr SA finalist Clive Maistry these numerous challenges, we have and are being scored. The SMS voting also contributes towards the grand total at the end.

Why did you enter Mr SA? It’s something that I have always wanted to do since I was younger. I saw it as, not just a massive feather in my cap, but also a chance to stand up, be heard and make a difference in the lives around me. It is an accolade that can only be earned for the right reasons, so in doing so, it will truly be a huge achievement for me. What has been one of the most rewarding experiences of your Mr SA journey so far? One of the most rewarding experiences is definitely putting smiles on peoples’ faces, giving them the gift of hope and assuring them that all will be OK. Sometimes all people need is a tiny gesture of love and a glimpse of hope - and that alone can change their outlook on their current situations and empower them to aspire to greater heights. What initiatives/projects have you been involved in? Particularly this year, I have been involved in many different initiatives that are quite close to my heart, namely children and animals. From hosting a ballet event for women (both young and old) at the Joburg Ballet, to assisting animals in finding foster homes, to collecting blankets and food for the underprivileged at the Salvation Army, and most recently, bringing National Heritage Day to a charity home called New Beginningz, where I had the pleasure of braaiing for these precious kids and spending the day with them on 24 September. When is the Mr SA camp? And what will the contestants get up to there? Everything surrounding the news of the camp is still quite under wraps, as it will serve as a teaser for a big announcement coming soon towards the end of October. What I can tell you, though, is that there is a reality series starting at the end of October on Tshwane TV which you can watch on the DSTV bouquet. When is the final event? The eagerly anticipated final event is bookmarked for December. What tasks have they set out for the contestants in order to stand a chance to win this prestigious title?/ What does this competition require of the contestants? Well, since the start of the competition, way back in January, we have been given many challenges and tasks - each one quite different from the next. Ranging from charity to brand awareness to community projects and maximum media exposure. Through

If you win, how do you plan to inspire the young men of SA? I saw that you are doing a Man of Honour challenge on FB; are there any attributes you feel men in SA need to develop or improve on? Yes, Mr South Africa launched the #MenOfHonour campaign this year, showing the public how upstanding gentlemen of the community should in fact carry themselves. It has also allowed the public to get to know us better, by reading our views, comments and write-ups. It is a #100DayChallenge campaign and it has proved very interesting, and challenging at the same time, as you never know what tomorrow’s challenge will be. I am thoroughly enjoying it though, as it certainly pushes one’s thought processes and creativity to the next level. My message throughout the year is, and has always been, clear from the word go. My message to the youth is “So Can You” !

Helicopter crash in Germiston kills two

A man and a woman tragically lost their lives after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in Germiston near Rand Airport on Thursday afternoon. The helicopter was a Matrix recovery helicopter operated by Henley Air, which was returning from a vehicle recovery mission. Paramedics and members of other emergency services arrived on the scene and found the remains of the burnt-out chopper. Tragically, by the time paramedics arrived both of the people in the helicopter were dead.

EMPD helps Netstar corner car thief Around 12:16 on 23 September, Ekurhuleni Metro Police members responded to a call for assistance made by Netstar vehicle tracking company members chasing a Toyota RunX stolen hours earlier in Edenvale. EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention members managed to corner the vehicle at the intersection of Black Reef and Heidelberg Roads in Wadeville. The vehicle was recovered and the driver arrested. The five-door black Toyota RunX was

reportedly stolen that morning at 08:30 in Edenvale. The 38-year-old driver who was apprehended and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle at Elsburg Police Station was found wearing gloves, presumably so as not to leave his fingerprints on the vehicle. The dashboard of the RunX was found ripped, the ignition was tampered with and the gear knob was missing. The suspect is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon.

What would you say to someone who thinks that Mr SA is a beauty pageant? How would you describe its purpose and relevance? I could certainly see why someone would consider Mr South Africa a beauty pageant. I would be lying if I said physical attributes didn’t play a role. But it’s so much more than that. Carrying a title of this stature is an honour and a privilege for anyone. The purpose and relevance is simple - to be the best Man of Honour you can be. To teach the younger generation that humility, honesty, manners, respect and empathy toward others certainly goes a long way. What is your full-time job or career apart from Mr SA? I am in the media industry. Apart from my Mr South Africa duties, I run my own media business called CMDC (CliveMaistryDotCom) that I started back in 2010. I supply clients (predominantly television) with video content and fillers for their respective channels, as well as adverts. I am also a television presenter. You may have seen me on SuperSport Blitz. I am currently on tellytrack, where I present a show called The Racing RoundUp, covering all entertainment based news from the world of horse racing. Staying with presenting, I am also a presenter on The Tech Report which can be seen on eNCA. You would have heard me on 5FM, on the weekend breakfast show with Elana Afrika and Mark Gillman a few years back. During 2014 I was also selected as the Brand Ambassador of McNabs and one of the faces of Sorbet Man. Why would you feel proud to be an ambassador of this country? I think we have such a beautiful and diverse rainbow nation. So much potential amongst our youth still needs to be unearthed. I really can’t imagine a higher accolade for an ambassador! You can vote for me by SMSing ‘MRSA 017’ to 47439

depriving children of money

The National Credit Regulator (NCR) has announced that it has applied to the National Consumer Tribunal to cancel the registration of Moneyline Financial

Services (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Net 1 Applied Technologies South Africa (Pty) Ltd, for breach of the National Credit Act 34 of 2005 (NCA).

The investigation conducted by the NCR revealed that: 1 Moneyline Financial Services granted credit to consumers receiving child support grants and foster child grants meant for the upkeep of children, considering the grants as income to be assessed when considering the consumers’ ability to repay credit. 2 Moneyline Financial Services granted credit to consumers receiving social grants without assessing their debt repayment history.

3 Moneyline Financial Services granted credit to consumers receiving social grants without taking into account their monthly living expenses. 4 The credit agreement provided by Moneyline Financial Services to consumers is not in the prescribed form and does not contain crucial information about the rights and obligations of consumers.

5 Moneyline Financial Services does not keep and maintain documentation in support of the affordability assessments relating to consumers’ income and debt repayment history. The use of child support grants and foster child grants as income for purposes of conducting affordability assessments on credit applications is totally unacceptable. It deprives children of money meant to provide for their daily necessities,” Nomsa Motshegare, Chief Executive Officer of the NCR said.

Traditionally, the month of September is a difficult time at the South African National Blood Service (SANBS). Owing to preliminary examinations and preparation towards the final quarter of the year, blood drives at schools and universities are generally not possible at this time of year. This, together with poor turnouts at companies and organisational blood drives, has placed immense pressure on the blood stock levels. “SANBS needs to maintain a blood stock level of 5 days at all times by collecting 3000 units of blood per day to meet the demand of the thousands of patients who are reliant on blood transfusions for their survival. However at the moment we have only 1,6 days of blood stock available, and we are concerned that, should this continue, we are looking at a major crisis as we head towards the festive season,” says Vanessa Raju, Communications Manager of SANBS. It is only with the help of selfless blood donors that SANBS is able to rectify this situation. They have implemented a cut-back approach, according to which they are not fully able to meet requests by doctors. For example, if a doctor requests four units of blood, SANBS may only be able to offer two units, and this approach will continue until the blood stocks recover. SANBS is encouraging all regular donors and those who have made a conscious decision to join this cause of “saving lives” not miss out on their next donation date. This is also a reminder to all donors who selflessly donated blood on Mandela Day to remember that they are due to donate again and to continue making every day a Mandela Day. Members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to give the gift of life by becoming regular donors are urged to visit us as soon as they possibly can.

STAND A CHANCE TO

WIN 10 YEARS OF HOLIDAY AND MEMORIES AT SUN CITY

Tiana Davids writes:

This letter is a response to the Rape is a male problem article. Perhaps I am angry because I am someone who took part in the Slutwalk, or maybe it is the fact that I am a human being (despite what Mrs Yates said) who is completely shocked that someone would even write an article of this nature as she did. The Slutwalk was created to stop people blaming the victims. Maybe people who have been raped live with the shame their whole lives because they know that people will ask them, “What were you wearing? Where you drunk? Did you seduce him and then say ‘no’?” Men, women, and even children take part in the walk, screaming different chants, such as, “No means No; Yes means Yes.” Many people watched as we take to the streets with our posters and signs held high, informing people that rape is not all right. The buzz you feel afterwards is something no one can explain, so it saddens me when I read an article that degrades the Slutwalk and those who take part in it. The first thing that caught my attention in the article was the fact that it was titled Rape is a male problem. Women are not the only ones who are raped, and this is acknowledged and mentioned at the Slutwalk. Rape is everyone’s problem, even if it has not directly affected you in any way. We cannot place it on one gender as it can happen to everyone. The women who take part in the Slutwalk are not giving up their dignity as Mrs Yates claims. Many women dress in casual clothing. Dress style does not equate with dignity. There is no right/wrong way to dress, and if there is, it is only because old men with power put those standards there. Many women who were dressed in jeans and a T-shirt have been raped. Children and

Response

Dear Ms Davids, Thank you for your response. In my article I said, “Rapists are always responsible for their actions and women or girls should be able to wear miniskirts on taxis or bikini tops in public without being attacked.” I, too, have marched against rape – just not in slut attire. We agree, I think, that rape is a crime. Where we disagree is on how to prevent this horrible crime that robs women of freedom everywhere. Online reports on

babies have been raped. Men have been raped. Even nuns have been raped. Should we blame all those people for their outfits as well, or is it only okay to do so when the skirt is above the knee? It is incorrect to claim the Slutwalk is just about women, since a lot of men take part in the event as well. A group of men do the whole walk in six-inch heels and tight short dresses, something only three or four women do. I believe Mrs Yates should first take part in the Slutwalk and see what it is all about before she claims that woman are voluntarily giving up their dignity. The most shocking part of the article is the last paragraph which states, “They could choose to portray themselves as human beings with hearts, souls and minds as well as bodies; but, instead they attract male sight-seers with all the wrong intentions.” Since when does taking a stand against something mean we are not human beings? Many of the people who take part in the Slutwalk have either been raped, know someone who has been raped or just want to take a stand against the injustice of rape. We cannot sit back and allow someone to insult people who are taking a stand against something that is a growing problem. I fail to understand how screaming “No means No” and “It’s a dress not a yes,” with signs that show why we are protesting, will “attract male sight-seers with all the wrong intentions.” This event is worldwide and it will continue to grow each year. We have to join together to fight this continuous battle against not only rapists, but also against those who put down the fight. If being human and having dignity means wearing long dresses and keeping quiet when an injustice occurs, then I will continue to have no dignity and not be a human.

the 2012 miniskirt march in Joburg attracted many male comments (since removed) on the “hotness” of the marchers – missing the whole point of the campaign, which was to fight rape. Headlines included: Man at a mini skirt march (Daily Maverick), Miniskirts paralyse Joburg (www.io.l.co.za) and Mini-skirt march WATCH IT ON VIDEO – Sowetan LIVE. Keep marching, my sister!

Choosing a restaurant can be a daunting task. Be it for a fancy night out on town or simply a Sunday lunch with the in-laws the task can lead to success of everlasting shame. The multitude of options bombarding you as well as the varied preferences of all the people in your group can make choosing one restaurant to keep everyone happy seem impossible. So how do you choose the perfect restaurant?

Following these guidelines goes a long way towards finding the perfect restaurant. A bit of extra effort really goes a long way to ensuring that your meal is thoroughly enjoyable. Remember the most important part of dining is having a good time.

Follow these steps and dining out will be the highlight of your week!

4 The price is right.

A sticky topic when it comes to dining and oft a source of great unhappiness is the price of the meal. No one is willing to break the bank for a meal and this often stands in the way of having a good time. The best advice for this situation is to go with a clear idea with what your budget for the evening When choosing a restaurant it is incredibly is. That gives you both the freedom to important to consider the area and condition of spoil your guests as well as not having to the restaurant in question. The first indication search your purse for loose coins. of the quality of a restaurant is its appearance. The most expensive restaurant can seem cheap and quick if the building it is in is not up to scratch. The appearance and cleanliness of the restaurant can have a definite effect on people’s perceived notion of the food they will receive. Finding a restaurant that is both clean and aesthetically pleasing will put your guests at ease and start your meal off on a good note.

First impressions are lasting impressions.

2 There is food

for every mood.

People are picky creatures by nature and finding something for everyone’s taste is one of the hardest parts of choosing a place to dine. A place with a narrow selection is bound to find someone unhappy with their lot. A set menu is very dangerous proposition unless you know for a fact all your guests will enjoy the food. Most modern restaurants have websites with their entire menu available for perusal. This is a great way to know what choices the restaurant has and whether it will cater to your various needs.

3 Every occasion is the most important.

1. Buy a Chicken Burger, Chips & 500ml Coke

2. Take a ‘SELFIE’ of yourself enjoying your delicious meal. 3. Upload your picture to our Facebook Page 4. Retain your till slip as proof of purchase.

Having a meal out of the blue creates free rein to choose as you see fit. If it is a special occasion, Valid from 1 September 2014 to 30 November 2014 Draw Date: 5 December 2014. however, this creates a set expectation about the evening. A date, for instance, requires a restaurant with a certain amount of elegance and class. The same is true for catering important people which comes paired with even higher expectations. Use the guidelines of social convention to ensure that the evening is acceptable for the SHOP 8, KEY WEST CENTRE, BEDFORDVIEW people and the event. 011 450 3356

Page 10 As one African original to another, Amarula Cream has commissioned a top African artist to create an artwork for a must-have limited edition collector’s porcelain coffee cup and saucer. The elephant scene, by talented South African graphic artist and printmaker Motsamai Thabane, is featured on the saucer, but also reflected on the silver-coated cup to enhance the effect. Strikingly bold and unmistakably African, the scene expresses the majesty of the elephants in an unspoiled savannah landscape which is home to their favourite fruit, the marula. This is the first in the African collector’s series launched by the brand, with others to follow. The cup and saucer

compatibility of Amarula Cream and coffee, both African originals. Thabane is well known to South African art collectors and has exhibited with big names such as William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Norman Catherine, Colbert Mashile, Phillemon Hlungwani and also Paul Molete. A full-time collaborative printmaker at the now famous Artist Proof Studio (APS) in Johannesburg, he prints many of the works by the worldrenowned Kentridge. But the soft-spoken artist from Sebokeng has also developed an impressive following for his own work. He is a leading example of South Africa’s new generation of gifted graphic artists.

COMPETITION

Total and Red Bull’s helmet and motorbike competition was held at the Total Red Bull X Fighters, a freestyle motocross event which toured the world, starting in Mexico City on 14 March and ending in Pretoria on 23 August. The tour hosts some of the world’s best freestyle motocross riders. Total hosted a stand at the Pretoria event at the Union Buildings, where they invited prospective entrants to interact with their representatives. Entries with answers to the question “What is the best motor lubricant?” were entered into a draw, with the winners announced last Friday.

Young Adult fiction is not a fad at all Follow the Gold City signs - •with the release ofReef yet another film in this insanely popular genre, we can be sure that The Maze Runner will not be the last. Ster-Kinekor gave a select few the chance to watch the film before its official release date. The Maze Runner, which is based on the • 26°14’.15’’ S | 28°00’.48’’ E New York Times bestseller of the same name and written by James Dashner, is the first book in a series. Directed by newcomer WesBall, the movie gives viewers a feast for the eyes as the book has been re-imagined in a landscape that might have been hard to describe by the book’s author. The film stars Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf) as the main protagonist, who is seeking a way out of a mysterious maze in which he and a

select few others find themselves, with no memory of why they have been left there. As if that were not enough, the addition of some monstrous creatures definitely makes for an epic popcorn movie. The film also stars upand-coming British actors Kaya Scodelario (Skins), Will Poulter (Were the Millers) and Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Game of Thrones). Readers of the book may realize that some elements of the book were left out, but this does not take away from the story, as some parts of the book might not have worked on film - yet Wes Ball still manages to keep the essence of this eerie story. The Maze Runner may just be the dark horse of the year. We have also not had a male hero in a film for quite a while - Katnis and Tris vs Thomas anyone? The Maze Runner will be released at Ster-Kinekor cinemas on 26 September.
