Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za Potential developers of a suggested R3 billion sports academy for the Edenvale Sports Grounds have spoken up about their proposed development plans for the area. This follows news reports of the local sports bodies’ decision to petition against Council’s decision to alienate the sports grounds as a land parcel, making it vulnerable to the proposals of external bidders. Sporting bodies using the grounds believe

the community should have the final say about what happens to the land as they have invested in this facility over the years. The news of a proposed Ellis-Park-type stadium for the grounds recently moved 9 000 residents to sign a petition against the development on the Edenvale Sports Grounds, which Ward 18 councillor Heather Hart presented to Council on Thursday last week. Johan Le Roux, who has teamed up with Thys Le Roux and Dr Dave Sekete, said the suggested billion rand development would be called the Sports Grand Academy and that,

as a former Springbok rugby player, he had come up with the idea because his dream was to keep club rugby alive and to take it to a professional level. He said the suggested development would create 3 500 jobs and have facilities for over 27 sports catering for schoolchildren. “It will also be a one-stop centre,” he said. Should the development be approved by Council, the centre will include a 12 000-seat stadium, as well as a supermarket, gym, crèche, bike and running track, and facilities for chess and ice skating, as well as more conventional sports, like rugby, cricket and soccer.

Johan said the dream for such a centre was first born in him when he travelled to Australia during his time as a professional rugby player. “I wondered why they were winning world cups and what they were doing differently. This was when I first learned of their training centres.” He said he decided then to bring this concept back to South Africa and had been working on development plans for the concept for the past ten years. You might have heard of ‘orienteering’ (see back page). The basic crux of the sport is this: find your way back home using a compass. While it’s easy to get lost, it’s not always easy to find your way back. This takes great courage. Still, every now and then, someone steps out from obscurity to do what is right, pointing out a way for everyone else to follow. This week, both the best and worst of society joined together in honouring the late Nelson Mandela. Mandela’s unequivocal support across the board shows that even

the corrupt in society recognise the value of someone whose heart and motives are sincere. But while it’s good to remember heroes like Nelson Mandela, it’s more important continue in the direction he pointed out for us. Thankfully, good old-fashioned South African heroism lives on. It’s there if you know where to look for it. This edition honours citizen heroes who have stepped up out of ordinariness to do extraordinary things, such as give children a new chance at life(see page 15) or cancer victims and families of people with cancer, new hope (see page 2). There’s a great story about Ekurhuleni firemen who spent their Sunday morning helping a family in distress when a fallen tree blocked their gate in Bedfordview Central (see page 15). Moving forward into the unknown can be a scary thing but if you set your compass right for 2015, you will make the journey and achieve the purpose you were created for. Robert Frost wrote in his poem, The Road Not Taken: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” Here’s to journeying ahead with courage!

Residents stand together in fight against cancer

Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za Local is lekker, even when it comes to the promotion of cancer awareness. The Manny De Freitas Foundation recently held a dinner at the O Garfo Restaurant in Kensington to bring the community together in the fight against cancer. Jeanette De Freitas, CEO of the Foundation, explained, “People want to do so much to

help but they don’t know how, because they feel their contributions are just a drop in the ocean. What we hope to facilitate through hosting local events is the involvement of local, smaller businesses in the fight against cancer.” The Kensington dinner was well attended, with 117 guests, one of them, Miss Portuguese Republic South Africa. Over R40 000 was raised to support the Manny de Freitas Foundation’s aims.

COMMITTED: Jeanette De Freitas (CEO of the Manny de Freitas Foundation), with founder Manny De Freitas (shadow minister of transport), Teniqua da Fonseca (Miss Portuguese Republic South Africa 2014) and Mariazinha Gonsalves.

Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Thys explained there were over 100 schools in the area around the proposed academy and the concept was to send out scouts to these schools to find children from all backgrounds who could be developed into professional athletes. “This will not just benefit the community but the country as a whole, as it will lift our sporting achievements to new levels,” he said. “My dream is that this will become the prototype for other such developments in the country,” said Johan. “If Bafana Bafana wants to train there we won’t stop them,” explained Thys, “But the stadium will mostly be used for school-level sporting matches.” Clr Hart said Edenvale residents needed to be wary of this proposal, asking what impact such a complex would have on the surrounding community. “If it was so wonderful, why would over 9 000 people put down their signatures to stop this kind of development from happening on our sports grounds?” she asked, saying, “Edenvale has put its heart into the grounds. Council sees a land parcel open for development – we see a community sports ground.” She said the sporting bodies remained adamant that the decision about what happens to Edenvale’s Sports Grounds

Ward 18 councillor Heather Hart is determined Edenvale residents are not hearing the whole story about the suggested development and urges residents to consider the impact it would have on the surrounding community. She wrote to the tame TIMES: “What Mr Le Roux and his partners are ignoring is the negative impact their proposed development will have on Edenvale and the suburbs surrounding the stadium. Furthermore they do NOT have the interests of Edenvale but their own interests and that of future sports stars as a priority. What I

should rest with them. She said when she had handed in the petition, she had said, “Madam Speaker, this isn’t just a petition; these are 9 000 voices who have a right to be heard.” (See more on page 5).

SUSPICIOUS: The white Volkswagen Polo that has been seen at different crime scenes where thefts out of motor vehicles have occurred.

DEVELOPERS: Johan Le Roux and Thys Le Roux share a surname, but are not related – they are brothers joined by a common love for sport and club rugby.

would like to know is why they think they know better than the residents of Edenvale what is good for Edenvale? And where are they going to get the money? How long is it going to take to develop? What will happen to the sports clubs while the development is taking place? Finally a development of this nature would destroy the community aspects of this sports grounds and people would no longer be able to walk their animals, just pop in at leisure to watch a game or two, and would create far too much noise and traffic for the surrounding areas to handle.”

Bedfordview police have arrested two men (26 and 30 years old) for attempting to steal the spare wheel off a Ford Ranger outside a popular Bedfordview restaurant, at around 20.50 on 1 December. Sergeant Mduduza Nhlabathi, Bedfordview police spokesman, said the vehicle the men were caught in, a white Volkswagen Polo, had been seen at different crimes scenes at which thefts out of motor vehicles had occurred. He said the same men were allegedly connected to other incidents in which spare wheels had been stolen.

He said the restaurant’s security staff had noticed the men parked in their white car alongside the Ford Ranger. One of the men was still in the driver’s seat of the car, while the other was beneath the Ranger, trying to loosen the spare wheel. He said when the men saw the guard, the man outside the car retreated to the car and the two tried to drive away, but the car was stopped at a boom-gate. He said that the men were subsequently arrested and charged with theft out of a motor vehicle.

HEROES: A giant branch blocking the gateway to a Bedfordview home was promptly removed by the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Disaster Management team. The Ekurhuleni Metro’s Disaster Management team has been commended for its prompt response after a tree’s fallen branches blocked a Bedfordview family’s gate during a massive storm on Sunday last week. Marina Constas contacted ward 20 Councillor Jill Humphreys last week, notifying her that a giant branch had fallen from a tree at the entrance of their

Bedfordview Central property, trapping them inside the premises. Clr Humphreys said the Ekurhuleni Disaster Management team were on the scene within 20 minutes, opening the way for the Constas family to leave the property and helping to clear up the tree’s debris. Lexi Constas treated the team to home-made biscuits while they worked hard to save the Constas damsels from their distress

Chubby Chums in Primrose asks residents to open their hearts to the many children in their care this Christmas through the donation of second-hand fluffy toys to be used as Christmas gifts. “If you have any fluffy toys lying around that nobody wants to play with, please bear us in mind,” said founder and director Martin Barnard. “At times we use those fluffy toys to regain respect and love from our children who

have been abused or abandoned and often feel lost, lonely and neglected.” He explained that toys helped to ease the pain of the children, many of whom immediately bonded with fluffy toys. “At times when the children have been hurt they don’t know who to trust, but when they receive a fluffy toy they feel loved and acknowledged.” For more information, contact 011 825 7773.

Residents of Bedfordview are by now familiar with the mammoth Christmas tree on the Huggy Bears Nursery School premises in Van Buuren Road. The tree was built by principal Lisa Correia to encourage awareness of the benefits of recycling and to get children and parents involved in a Christmas charity drive. What makes the tree unique is that it is made out of 4 500 bottles, with decorations made of bottle caps. Correia said the tree had been built on the basis that, for every ball of wool received from the children and parents of Huggy Bears, 20 bottles were placed on the tree. “The response was overwhelming and the tree was put up fast,” she said. This is not the first year she has overwhelmed the community with a unique Christmas tree: “Last year, I created a similar structure out of empty cans for recycling purposes. No decorations were needed as the cans were very colourful. This year, making the tree presented a much bigger task as I had to place 4 500 plastic bottles in formation, using their caps as decoration.” She said she is satisfied by her handiwork, “It not only promotes the concept of recycling but is now enjoyed and admired by all the residents of Bedfordview and has become the most photographed item in the area! My joy is everyone’s joy.”

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS: Huggy Bears Nursery School's unique Christmas tree, made of plastic bottles with bottle caps for decoration, set the stage for Father Christmas' recent visit to the children.

Golfer killed by crocodile in South Africa’s Lake Panic

Three-month-old baby Thabang Maponya was reunited with his family after being kidnapped last Monday. By Friday, the suspect, who had befriended Thabang's mother Boitumelo while she was expecting him, had not yet been arrested. On Monday, the woman, known as Agnes, offered to take them out for a treat. However, she disappeared with the baby after saying she was going to buy food at a takeaway outlet in Jo’burg. Lieutenant-Colonel Khensani Magoai said the police had taken statements from witnesses who helped reunite Thabang with his family. Boitumelo was overjoyed to see her son after three days of agonising about his safety and whereabouts. His grandmother, Maria, said she was happy to be able to spend Christmas with her grandson. The beggar with bulging pockets

A crocodile has killed a man while he was retrieving golf balls from Lake Panic dam in South Africa’s flagship wildlife reserve. Officials at Kruger National Park said the animal grabbed 29-year-old Jacques van der Sandt and disappeared under the water at a golf course next to a staff residential area. Rangers killed the crocodile after a two-hour search on Wednesday night. The body of Van der Sandt, the son of a park employee, was recovered. Oubaas Coetzer, a police officer, said Van der Sandt was attacked while he and a friend played a game to see who could retrieve the most golf balls from the dam. Source: theguardian.com

A beggar (64) arrested in Iran last week had millions of rials (thousands of dollars) in his pockets and a great deal more in two bank accounts. The former street vendor was stopped by a police patrol cracking down on beggars in Bukan and they found he had 110 million rials (about $3 300) in his pockets. Last month, President Hassan Rouhani ordered police to clear the streets of beggars and to identify the criminal networks behind some of them. Source: iol.co.za.

Studies show that when Dad steps up, Mom is more likely to be a successful breastfeeder. Health24 reports allege that when new dads are involved in a breastfeeding support programme at the hospital, new moms are more likely still to be breastfeeding three months later. “This is consistent with what is in the literature suggesting fathers play an important role in breastfeeding,” leading author Jennifer Abbass-Dick of the University of Ontario’s Institute of Technology in Canada is quoted as saying.

The world is divided into six floral kingdoms. All these kingdoms encompass several countries, and in some cases, several continents. South Africa, which has a floral kingdom wholly contained within the country, is the one exception. The Cape Floral Kingdom has 9 600 plant species, 70% of which are not found anywhere else in the world.

ADVENTURE: Orienteering opens up a world of adventure to athletes, and is a bit like the “Amazing Race.” Photo taken from www.sardiniandiscovery.com

Local school sports enthusiasts can expect an adventure in 2015, with the South African Orienteering Federation (SAOF) launching its new Eastern Orienteering Schools League in February next year. SAOF spokesperson Lisa de Speville said the league would be open to all schools in the area but that the federation preferred children to be around 10 and older. Home-schooled children are also invited to participate. She said Jeppe High School for Boys was currently involved in the sport and had taken part in the longstanding northern suburbs based league earlier this year. Orienteering is a sport of map-and-compass navigation - a bit like “Amazing Race” or treasure- hunting. Locations, or “controls” are marked on a specially drawn orienteering map which participants have to read and interpret in order to find the locations. She explained the sport had its roots in the forests of

Scandinavia, where orienteering events were held at the end of the 19th century as part of military training. Orienteering was subsequently formalised, and the sport, as defined by the International Orienteering Federation, was introduced into South Africa in 1981. The sport is relatively small in South Africa but in the Scandinavian countries, up to 20 000 people participate in major orienteering events. Competitors usually take part on foot - running or walking (or a bit of both). “We also have mountain bike orienteering events here in South Africa.

Abroad there is paddle and ski orienteering too,” explained De Speville. Competitors usually take part individually, but pairs and groups of three are also allowed to participate. De Speville said the sport was exciting because it was you against yourself (how you interpret the map and make choose your route) and the clock. “Even for participants not in the running to win, the challenge of having a ‘clean’ run, without making mistakes and getting lost or going in the wrong direction is always there. And that’s what keeps people in the sport for decades.” She said Johannesburg, with its grassy and rocky highveld terrain, was a great challenge for adventure enthusiasts. “And if you make a wrong route choice, you could find yourself working your way through thick vegetation!” She said anyone could get involved in the sport. “Children start off doing courses with their parents and then get shadowed (with no interference from the adult), before going out on their own. “It’s an incredible confidence boost for children to learn to find their way and to be comfortable outdoors,” she said.“Depending on the child and how long they’ve been doing events with their parents, they can be running on their own - map in hand - by the time they’re six or seven.” “Local venues we’ve used in recent years include Jeppe Boys High, Queens High and the Houghton Golf Course. In the past we’ve used the Modderfontein Nature Reserve and the Gillooly’s and Linksfield Ridge area. We’ve got a few new maps planned for this area with the new Orienteering Schools League coming up in February 2015.” For more information, visit www.orienteering.co.za.
