More than 700 members of the Bedfordview community took to the streets on the morning of Sunday 3 August to participate in the third annual High Heel Fun Walk. The walk has shown growth through the years, as more and more members of the community want to associate themselves with the cause, which is to raise awareness for cancer. Walkers of all age groups, from children to the elderly, tackled both the 5-kilometre and 10-kilometre routes through the streets of Bedfordview and arrived at the finishing point where a mini awards presentation, as well as a talk by Ana Brito Maneira of the Portuguese embassy, were held.

In her talk Maneira acknowledged the efforts of the walk organisers and participants. She also made special mention of the growing number of men participating in the annual walk. “It is a great honour to be here and to have participated in the awareness walk; it is also encouraging to see more men in pink supporting the cause of raising awareness of cancer. Cancer knows no gender,” said Maneira. “This is the third walk. At the beginning we had 200 participants, then in our second year the walk attracted 400 walkers. This year more than 700 people participated, so hopefully next year the walk will attract a thousand people,” said Maneira.

GARY KIRSTEN: The legendary cricketer will be at a men’s meeting at Cornerstone Church Bedfordview on Saturday 16 August at 3pm.

Miss SA Rolene Strauss spreads the love for Casual Day. With her is Zy-Ann Swanepoel, a learner at Alma School in Pretoria. Miss South African 2014, Rolene Strauss, continued a 20 year tradition by showing her support for Casual Day. She recently visited a school for children with disabilities that is participating in Casual Day and found a special place for her Casual Day sticker. By lending her voice to those of the millions of South Africans who participate in Casual Day, she is making a big impact on the lives of persons with disabilities all over the country. She said, “Bring out the bling for Casual Day – and wear your sticker.” “By adding her support to the Casual Day campaign, Rolene will be assisting in the generating of funds towards the financial targets of the various organisations. Although many schools with disabilities receive some financial assistance from government, the extra funds they raise through Casual Day really make a huge difference in the services they can render. Rolene is a caring person

– she is, after all, training to be a physician - and her involvement will inspire others to participate in Casual Day,” said project leader Celeste Vinassa. Casual Day is South Africa’s most successful fundraising project for persons with disabilities – and the amount raised for last year has climbed to R24.8 million. Sponsored by The Edcon Group, Casual Day is the flagship project of the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA), which this year celebrates 75 years of service to the community of persons with disabilities. Some of the beneficiaries of Casual Day are: National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in SA, South African National Council for the Blind, South African Federation for Mental Health, Deaf Federation of South Africa, Autism South Africa, Alzheimer’s South Africa and the South African Disability Alliance.

Legendary South African cricketer, Gary Kirsten will be at a men’s meeting at Cornerstone Church Bedfordview (Benard Road East, Morninghill) on 16 August at 15:00. The event will include a Q&A session and is a fantastic opportunity for sports fans and up-and-coming cricketers of any age to meet one of the most celebrated stalwart in South African cricket. Ladies need not feel left out. Gary’s wife, Debbie, will be having a ladies’ tea on the same Saturday at 11:00, where she will share her unique story as the wife of a successful sportsman. After a successful cricket career and journey as a coach Kirsten decided to step down as the coach in 2013 to spend more time with his family. He now has many business interests and is a sought after guest speaker. There is no cost for this event. The event will be followed by the broadcast of a rugby game (South Africa versus Argentina) at 5pm, with a bring and braai. Illegal dumping makes residents frustrated

A HEALTH CONCERN: Household rubbish has been dumped on the A “No Dumping” sign on the vacant piece of land has done little to deter corner of Gray Avenue and Camberley Street in Dinwiddie. the continual dumping.

75%

of illegal dumping is caused by building rubble * Interesting fact *

Residents of Woodkirk Street in Dinwiddie have over several months been struggling to find the person or persons responsible for keeping a vacant stand on the corner of Gray Avenue and Camberley Street clean. According to one resident, who chose to remain anonymous, several attempts have been made to try to find a solution to the problem, which has been heightened by the unwelcomed arrival of rats in the area. tame TIMES visited the land to find that there was obvious illegal dumping taking place on the vacant stand, and because houses on Woodkirk Street are directly behind the site on Gray Avenue, they are hardest hit by the smell and the unwanted rats. “We have contacted various departments, including the Parks Department and the Health Department, both of which have agreed that the situation is unacceptable; however, because the land is privately owned, they would need to find the owner,” said the concerned resident. “I have at times considered grabbing tools and cleaning up the mess, but there are growing health concerns and I fear getting ill in the process,” he added. The land is currently for sale and there is a visible estate agent’s board on the premises displaying an agent’s number which tame TIMES managed to get hold of. Speaking to tame TIMES, the estate agent Mr Floors agreed that the responsibility of keeping the land clean is his client’s, but he also stated that the rubbish did not arrive there by itself; and encouraged residents to refrain from dumping their rubbish on the stand. Mr Floors did assure us that he would make contact with his client who is currently based in America and try to rectify the situation. By the time of going to print, attempts to get comment from the Metro for comment were unsuccessful.

The same traditional tastes which have become synonymous with the Mimmos brand (established in 1993) mixed with some modern fresh modern variants is what you can expect at the recently opened Mimmos restaurant at the Key West Centre in Van Buuren Road. Last week tame TIMES had the pleasure of meeting the owner/manager Miguel Gomes and tasting some of the offerings on their menu. Miguel, who grew up in a Mimmos restaurant (in Kempton Park) owned by his father, told tame TIMES that for many years he did not realise the impact his upbringing had had on him. The 27-year-old explained that after obtaining his teaching qualification, he felt he had to go back to the restaurant and help his father run the business, which he did for five years. He then left the restaurant and pursued his own path, working at various places. “I never really felt like I was reaching my full potential while working under a boss,” said the charismatic owner. “So when I realized that there was an opportunity to open up my own outlet in Bedfordview I jumped at it.” Mimmos Bedfordview not only boasts its own unique styling visible through its bold straight lines and fresh, chic modern furniture; it also has its own menu which was developed with the lifestyle requirements of Bedfordview consumers in mind, which includes WiFi and a spacious children’s play area. When our food arrived at the table, it became clear what direction Mimmos were going with their Key West outlet. We were treated to fresh, healthy alternatives like zucchini fries instead of traditional potato fries. “Our difference is that we have taken the traditional favourites and added newer

variants to our unique menu with the purpose of catering for everyone in the family. Also, we have carefully selected our suppliers, because without the best ingredients it would not be possible to bring out the standard of food which comes from our kitchen,” said Miguel, who is determined to duplicate the success of his father, Ricky Gomes.

ON THE PLATE:

For the tame Flavour we had the Poached Pear and Blue Cheese salad (which was a favourite for our team), the Mimmos favourite Chicken Maestro pizza and a pleasantly tender serving of Mimmos’ Fillet Medallions.

Elandspark School facilities revamped Elandspark School hosted a dinner on Friday 20 June to celebrate the launch of the school’s recently constructed hairdressing and spa training facility and the renaming of their Learner Development and Support Centre (therapeutic centre). Elandspark School is an LSEN (Learners with Special Educational Needs) school and caters to learners with various special educational needs. Both facilities were developed with the vision of maximizing learners’ experiences. The Bedfordview school’s motto “we strive” was appropriately brought to life with the re-launching of both centres, and although, according to headmaster Mr du Plessis, their full vision was not realized, the impact these centres will have on learners will not in any way be lessened. “I have learnt one thing - this centre is about half of what our dreams were, but the support and the development which will take place towards our learners will not be half. This is what I want to share with you,

you may reduce your dreams but never let the impact of your dreams be reduced,” said Mr du Plessis. The learner development centre was officially renamed “Johanna Bothma Development and Support Centre,” after the schools senior deputy headmaster, Mrs Johanna Bothma. “Mrs Bothma has had a tremendous influence on the functionality and development of Elandspark School in her many years of trustworthy service to the school,” said Melissa Cawood (HOD Development & Support Team). The hairdressing and spa training facility, (Cutting Crew), was built with the assistance of the Fuchs Foundation, and boasts 21 work stations, a nail bar, massage parlour, a coffee bar and other facilities for use by visiting clients. Cutting Crew was also dedicated and officially opened for use by Ms Charlene Grobler and her learners. The evening was wrapped up with a dinner and a prize-giving for the school’s sponsors as a sign of appreciation.

St Catherine’s Grade 4 class enjoyed learning about bridges, and building them. All their hard work and dedication can be seen in the projects pictured above.

Five months of hard work by Reddam House College’s Arts and Culture Department culminated in four spectacular performances at the Marcellus Theatre (Emperors Palace). Learners and some staff members put their best foot forward during the four nights of performance at Emperors. The performance on a professional stage was made possible by Emperor’s Palace’s Group Entertainment Manager, Mr Andi Shaughnessy. While the production was put on by learners, being on a professional stage allowed for them to push their artistic capabilities to a level which gave audiences a performance remarkably reminiscent of the 1978 classic film. All four performances were dedicated to the memory of dance teacher Manuela Loureiro who passed away on Tuesday 22 July. 1: YOU’RE THE ONE THAT I WANT: Cast two members perform a song and dance routine during their final performance on Tuesday 29 July. 2: Jordan Dowds, who played Sandy, wowed the audience with her vocal abilities. 3: T BIRDS: Garion Dowds who played Kenickie (left) with Dean Goldblum who played Danny Zuko (Right). 4: DRIVE IN: performers go through a scene from Act Two.

A moment for the less fortunate

Holy Rosary School always tries to support the less fortunate people of our community. In the spirit of former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday, the Primary School made sandwiches for the Khanyisa Soup Kitchen at the Edenvale Methodist Church. For a week, each class was allocated a specific day to make sandwiches which they then served with a chocolate and a card wishing the recipient a “Happy Mandela Day.” Seen here are some of the Holy Rosary Grade 1s with some of the soup kitchen regulars: Back: Alyssa Peebles, Teresa Liu, Madison Morris, Tatum de Oliveira, Alexia Finlayson, Gina Da Silva, Nicola Sparke and Eleni Sgouridis. Jill Humphreys (Clr Ward 20) writes: on a recent Nelson Mandela Day outreach involving DA volunteers from her ward.

Bedfordview, and in particular Constance Road, outreach for the elderly of Katlehong: The gratitude and delight of these dear old people was tangible. The generous contribution of food bags made an enormous difference in the lives of these elderly ladies. That chilly morning in Katlehong, 96-year-old Mary grinned and sang and held our hands with warm and genuine gratitude. The whole group burst into spontaneous songs of gratitude followed by prayers wonderfully accompanied by harmonious humming - such a very beautiful and poignant custom. Our DA Youth and activists have been working at this particular facility for some time and are doing all they can to support it. Your kind of contribution is so much more than any of them can achieve. Many many thanks.- Jill Humphreys

Stanley and his team came to donate duvet inners for our children’s home, which we were ecstatic to receive the duvet inners as we are always in a desperate need for duvet inners for our hospice wings and children’s homes, shelters and places of safety. We would like to thank them from the bottom of our hearts for this wonderful donation as this allows us to keep them warm, from all the volunteers, executive managers and committee members.- Felicia Gaza

by Erika Schwartz A woman’s hair is her crowning glory and sometimes even an extension of her character. As women, we clean, preen and style our hair to ensure that we always look our absolute best. Bad hair days are one of the most upsetting things for women. Avoid them with these tips and tricks to whip your hair into shape when time is not on your side. Dry hair is one of the biggest complaints in winter. Prevention is better than cure, so stop the frizz before it starts by using a shampoo and conditioner that suits your specific hair profile and contains Argan oil. This will ensure that you lock in the moisture and prevent frizzy and unmanageable hair. Do you know that the way you dry your hair with the towel or even the type of towel you use can create frizz and rough up the texture of your hair? Most woman think that vigorously drying their hair with a towel will speed up the process of getting ready for work or the date that has arrived early, but it is better to use a microfibre towel and dry your hair softly to avoid frizz, knots and breakage. To enhance curls and reduce frizz, the best method is to dry your hair with an old T-shirt. After washing and conditioning, wrap - rather than twist - your hair in the T-shirt to absorb most of the excess water. After this, apply a curl boosting gel and let your hair air-dry. Try to resist touching your hair until it is completely dry or the curls will not set. You will need a good quality blow-dryer to speed up the time-consuming process of a blow-out without damaging your hair. A nozzle attachment will focus the heat on a specific area and ensure that you get a smooth finish by making the cuticle of the hair shaft lie flat. Turn your head upside down and flip your hair over to dry the roots and give your hair that salon quality body. If you have natural curls or waves, never fight them. Attach the diffuser with prongs to give body, and set the natural curl of your hair. You blow-dryer should have a combination of tourmaline and ionic technology that contains ceramic heating coils to distribute the heat evenly and minimise damage. To save even more time in the morning, consider “sleeping on it” and get a hair treatment overnight by applying treatment crème that will bind split ends while you are sleeping. Wake up with smoother, more manageable hair that makes you look like you have just stepped out of a salon. A straightener makes styling easier and quicker - or you can tie your hair back into a doughnut bun and add accessories like a bow, shoelace, hairclip or hairband to complement your outfit.

When people go to hospital, they are likely to meet security guards, receptionists, nurses, doctors and maybe chemists; but seldom a hospital manager like yourself. What are the typical duties of a hospital manager? To understand the role of each individual employee and function and how they contribute toward the success of the hospital, ensuring we deliver a service to our customers that lives up to their expectations. This includes many meetings - either formal or informal with the management team, customers, employees, specialists and all stakeholders to make sure what we do is in the best interests of all and not just an individual. How long have you been at Bedford LIFE? Since 1 June 2012 after I joined Life Healthcare Group at Life Roseacres Clinic on 1 Nov 2007. I was in private practice for a short period after being at Heidelberg District Hospital for a total of 10 years. How has your experience with the community been so far? Extreme diversity in race, culture, religion - which is very interesting and also challenging. It resembles the flag of our country and gives true meaning to the concept of a rainbow nation. What would you say are the critical ingredients that one absolutely has to have to succeed in the healthcare field? Daily sacrifice, understanding of people and understanding of oneself. Healthcare workers experience a journey with patients and customers from the day they are born until the sad one when they pass away, which is very fulfilling but also strenuous on your personal life.

Page 9

What are the milestones, and perhaps challenges, you faced on your way to where you are currently stationed? Firstly, to have the opportunity to complete my studies and become a doctor in the early 1980s when there was a restriction on the number of women allowed into medical school. Secondly, being recruited for the Medical Superintendent position at Heidelberg Hospital in 2003, then being appointed as a hospital manager for a large private healthcare group. In which areas of your work do you derive most pleasure? Working every day in teams with employees, specialists and all stakeholders who really are devoted to serve and make life better for all. We are in the services industry and just one smile will still make our day! Do you have any non-medical and perhaps secret talents? There is not much time for hobbies, but I do like cycling and have completed a couple of Argus’ and 94.7 Cycle challenges. My staff members will probably be surprised that I do like camping where I do not have to dress up and can appreciate the small things in life like mud in my toes. As a healthcare facility what does Bedford Life bring to this community? Because we are not too big we are still able to get involved with patients on an individual basis, knowing many of them by name and their specific circumstances.

Junior golfers to make SA juniors Kyle McClatchie and Kaleigh Telfer will make local golfing history as South Africa’s first golfing Olympians at the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in China next month. The South African Golf Association (SAGA) and Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA) has announced that McClatchie from Ekurhuleni and Telfer from Gauteng will be joining Team SA and will be among the 54 athletes who will represent South Africa in Nanjing from 16 to 28 August. Golf was not among the sporting codes featured at the first Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010; but following the sport’s reinstatement at the 2016 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has included golf in the programme this year. McClatchie and Telfer will tee it up in the 54-Hole Boys and Girls Stroke Play events from 19 to 21 August at the Nanjing Zhongshan International Golf Club, whereafter they will

combine to compete for South Africa in the Mixed Gender Team event from 24 to 26 August at the same venue. McClatchie led South Africa to victory in the Team Competition at the second African Youth Games in Botswana in May, and the 17-year-old Serengeti golfer also claimed gold in the Individual Boys Competition at Gaborone Golf Club. Telfer recently returned from the United Kingdom, where she competed against a world-class field at the R&A Junior Open Championship. “I am incredibly honoured to have been selected for Team SA,” McClatchie said. “Going to the Africa Youth Games was very exciting, but this is undoubtedly the biggest achievement of my career.” Telfer is also relishing the chance to prove herself in Nanjing. “It is always incredibly special to represent South Africa, but to wear the green and gold at the Youth Olympics is the highest honour of all,” Telfer said. “I am extremely excited about this opportunity.”

South Africa took third place at the International Team Mid-Amateur Championship in France. South Africa defeated France to claim third place in their debut performance at the International Team Mid-Amateur Championship at Golf Du Medoc Resort near Bordeaux on Sunday 20 July. The South Africans emerged victorious from the hard-fought battle against the host nation to claim a 2-1 victory. Josef Fourie from Free State and Western Province’s Greg Sheard were two down in the Foursomes at the turn, but levelled the game down the back nine and won at the first extra hole. Central Gauteng’s David Muller lost his Singles game, but Graeme Watson from Ekurhuleni launched a superb come-back over the last three holes to secure the win for South Africa. The reigning Volvo SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play champion, Watson, was 1-down, but sunk a tough par putt at the 16th to square

the game. He chipped in at the 17th to take the lead and halved the 18th in pars to win 1-up. “All three games against France were very tight, but the team showed great courage to come from behind and take the bronze,” said team manager and SAGA Assistant Executive Director, Neil Homann. “The Test against France and the championship was a fantastic experience for the players and we are very proud of their achievement and their great fighting spirit.” Meanwhile, finalists Sweden and Italy shared the trophy after the teams finished all square. “The organisers decided that the teams would share the trophy because it had grown too dark for the match to continue, and the Swedes had to catch a flight on Sunday night and couldn’t stay until Monday,” Homann said.
