The shocking revelation that well-known Bob Hewitt could be guilty of committing sexual crimes has rocked South Africa. Bob Hewitt was half of the best doubles team

The alleged crimes took place from 1970 to the early 1990’s. Four of the five women who are accusing Hewitt of sexual abuse are South African. They claim that the abuse took place when they were being coached by the then legend. Heated chase leads to airport syndicate arrest Suspected airport syndicate robbing persons from the OR Tambo arrivals were caught by EMPD National Traffic Police. According to Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, a 25-year-old son picking up his mother at OR Tambo Airport from Congo was accosted by three male occupants along the freeway. The three occupants flashed fake police appointment cards and instructed the driver to stop. On stopping his vehicle, the driver recognised one of the men to be the same person who robbed him of his cash and a cellphone in July 2011, using the same modus operandi. Fortunately, both the National Police and EMPD Freeway Unit members witnessed the incident and confronted the suspects. The Alfa Romeo driver with one of his accomplices sped away and left one suspect stranded. The stranded suspect
decided to throw himself into one of the vehicles, with three female occupants, caught in the traffic. The police were able to yank the suspect out of the vehicle and arrested him. In-depth investigations are underway to establish whether the suspect can be linked to several robberies of this nature that have taken place in the recent past.

I don’t mean to start off on such a bad note, but I just have to get something off my chest. My soul was and, to be honest, is still deeply hurt by the horrific story of Jasmin Pretorius, a four years old, defenceless and innocent girl who was ripped away from her family. I attended Jasmin’s memorial, the same one where all the people got up and left. I attended her funeral, her heartbreaking funeral with her minute coffin bursting with the most beautiful flowers and teddies and balloons etc. I still can’t get my mind around what happened to her. Raped. Murdered. Allegedly by someone she loved and trusted with her life. Now, if I, someone that didn’t know Jasmin in her short-lived life, feel this way, then I couldn’t possibly even begin to comprehend how ‘Jazzie Fizzle’s’ family, her friends, and anyone that knew this precious soul could be feeling. Please know that I pray for you all every night, I think about everything she went through and everything that you are all continuing to go through and wish there was something one could do to turn the tide around. Anything, just something to

Jy voel dalk soos ‘n nuwe sikspens!
help you. I’m so sorry she is gone, I am sorry you didn’t get to say goodbye. We pray you rest in peace Jasmin. On the brighter side of 2014, my best friend is getting married; my sister-in-law is about to have her baby girl, Milah; and I still have my vision, my limbs, my eyesight and every family member I did have, since the last time we chatted. So far it is promising to be a fantastic year, with lots of exciting things to look forward to. Please, we do urge you all, as part of the community, to send us your stories, letters, complaints and holiday experiences through. We want to know. We want to meet you. SA NCD Alliance to fight killer diseases The recently established South African Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance (SA NCD Alliance) was selected by the international NCD Alliance to focus on raising awareness and action to lower premature deaths, preventable illness and disability related to non-communicable diseases in South Africa. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory disease. Founding members of the SA NCD Alliance are the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), Diabetes SA and the Heart and Stroke Foundation with Patient Health Alliance of Non-Governmental Organisations (PHANGO) and its 27 primarily patient-based organisations. PHANGO will act as the steering member and project management body for the Alliance. Dr Vicki Pinkney-Atkinson, Executive Director of PHANGO stated, “The Alliance is initiating a consultation process with global NCD Alliance members, the National Department of Health and other South African stakeholders in determining all possible ways to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases in our country. This process will be ongoing throughout 2014.” As a leading cause of death worldwide, NCDs have been prioritised as a major health and developmental risk globally, South Africa included. United Nations (UN), World Health Organization (WHO), World Health Assembly and the global NCD Alliance have committed to fight the NCD epidemic. Progress in this regard is evidenced through the UN Political Declaration on NCDs and the WHO’s efforts to set global NCD targets and formulate the Global NCD Action Plan 2013-2020. The first event of is a workshop, planned for February 2014, with participation by relevant South African stakeholders to consider a national plan of action on NCDs. Stationery packs for all The Miss Earth South Africa organisation has been hard at work distributing stationery to underprivileged schools through their Stationery Drive programme. In 2012 they were able to distribute stationery packs to 12 575 learners, and last year 13 224 packs were distributed. Stationery sets are the easiest and most logistically uncomplicated to distribute. In 2012 and 2013 the greatest contribution and difference was made by the selfless contributions of hundreds of South Africans who participated by collecting from those around them, and going out to buy packs of stationery, books, diaries and files. The programme focuses on children from underprivileged schools, and they also aim to provide stationery that is new, useable and for which there is a demand. This year the organisation aims to maintain or exceed the previous years’ figures, as it has already received requests for more than 7000 stationery packs before the end of last year. A number of schools in the Gauteng region have already been identified as the first schools that will benefit from the campaign, which is now in its 8th year. Some of the areas that will also benefit from the programme include: Orange Farm, Alexandra, Vosloorus and Thembisa, to name a few. “We understand the need for and value of education and we have visited primary schools in underprivileged areas where up to 40 learners share one pencil in a classroom; this is not conducive to a healthy learning environment. Public contributions
make it possible for us to equip these learners with the stationery they need to make the most of their education,” says the Miss Earth South Africa National Director, Catherine Constantinides. Ella Bella, the Miss Earth South Africa’s Educational Officer, explains that many of the children were so overwhelmed with joy and pride to have their own stationery sets that during distributions last year many children asked if they had to give it back. Contributions to the Stationery Drive can be made by donating stationery or money towards the Miss Earth South Africa organisation. However, please do not send broken stationery.

Burning a candle for Jasmin. By Chantal Thurlby The body of 4-year-old Jasmin Pretorius was found under a bed in her father’s home at the turn of the year. She was allegedly raped and murdered by her father’s 23-year-old stepbrother, who lived in the home where the incident occurred. The SAPS and family held a prayer service for Jasmin in Brakpan on 3 January, to try and help the family deal and try obtain some peace after the horrific ordeal. The accused appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on 7 January for his second court appearance, as his first court appearance was postponed due to him not understanding his rights and not having legal representation.
The alleged rapist and murderer stood, wearing a brown striped jersey and tracksuit pants, staring at the ground showing no emotion and spoke very softly as the magistrate, Khatija Abba, had to re-explain the accused his rights. The accused acknowledged that he now understood his rights and that he would like legal aid. Laughter was heard in the courtroom, but Abba explained that it was the accused’s constitutional right to have legal aid. Magistrate Abba went on to explain that due to the accused not having any legal representation at the time of going to court that the next court appearance would be on 13 January, to give the accused’s lawyer time to consult with him. The case was postponed

A 20-year-old girl who had recently moved to Alberton, Brackendowns from Margate disappeared on 18 December after having been seen in Benoni for the last time by her now ex-boyfriend. The girl’s worried grandmother called on Alberton CPF to help her search for her granddaughter. The girl was found alive on 7 January by Benoni CPF and SAPS. They had contacted the boyfriend to show them the house where he claimed to have last seen her, after the girl’s mother managed to contact her. According to Benoni CPF the boyfriend was in Johannesburg CBD when he was asked to assist in the search. After showing the search parties the house, which was located in Western Extension in Benoni, concerns rose as Western Extension is an area predominantly inhabited by foreigners and is a well-known drug hot spot. The search parties approached the house and the girl was seen standing freely on the front lawn. The Benoni CPF reported that they raided the home, rescued the girl and brought her into protective custody. The victim had been allegedly assaulted by her boyfriend, however the boyfriend claims it was the alleged kidnappers who assaulted her. According to the victim she was left at the house by her boyfriend and was being held there, but the occupants of the house claimed that she could leave whenever she wanted to. The search parties say there is too much speculation surrounding the incident and they believe there were drugs involved. They assume the victim and her boyfriend went to the house for drugs, stayed there and ran up a bill which the boyfriend promised to pay upon his return; leaving her behind as collateral, and never returned. The missing girl’s grandmother said she felt so relieved and eternally grateful to Missing Children SA, Pink Ladies, Alberton CPF, Benoni CPF and SAPS for all their hard work. The grandmother said she is concerned about her granddaughter whom she feels got involved in the wrong crowd. Drugs were found in the Benoni house and, according to Benoni CPF, they will be focussing heavily on the Western Extension this year with the aim of catching more perpetrators. Well done to all parties involved in the rescue and thank you for returning a missing child to our community and for keeping us all safe.

Petrol thieves nabbed by Impala Park CPF On Friday evening, 10 January, Thulani Mayindi, a petrol attendant at the Caltex Northpoint Service Station on the corner of Dassen and Trichardt Road, noticed that the Silver Chev Lumina that arrived at the station, to be filled with R400 petrol, did not have any number plates. Thulani said the occupants of the vehicle acted suspiciously. Without making it obvious, he cleaned the windscreen of the vehicle whilst memorising the licence plate number that was on the licence disk. He also asked Petrus Sebande to memorise the details, just for in case they might need it. When the same vehicle sped off without
Hawks arrest suburb gang kingpin On Thursday, the Hawks arrested the kingpin of gang-related activities in the East Rand and Vaal suburbs of Gauteng. According to the Hawks, the gang was connected to several house robberies and other illegal activities. “Mapogo Mbatha was arrested during the early hours of last week Thursday morning, while with friends at a local club at the corner of Ramushu and Tantsi Streets in Atteridgeville,” said the Hawks spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko in a statement. Mapogo Mbatha is the brother of the ‘King of Bling’, who was sentenced to 113 years imprisonment in April 2012 for robbery. “We are convinced that this arrest will bring some solace to the affected communities. The team will be working around the clock until all members of this gang are apprehended,” said Gauteng Head of General Detectives, Major General Norman Taioe. Last month the Hawks arrested Mbatha’s accomplice Shaun “Zikies” Geduld. Expensive jewellery and watches to the value of R1 million were seized during the arrest.
paying, Thulani and Petrus immediately contacted the CPF, at 082 889 9260, to report this crime. Denise Curry tried to calm the callers down in order to get all the relevant and correct information to enable the Impala Park CPF Patrollers to take immediate action. Simon Kops, Clive Curry and Shaney Curry immediately went to the Caltex Garage, whilst Denise called all Impala Park CPF patrollers on their radio network to be on urgent lookout and to relay the information to Benoni CPF. Mr Clive Patterson and his patrollers from Benoni CPF were busy with an operation in the Western Extension area and within
minutes reported that they found the vehicle and perpetrators in the same area. Impala Park CPF patrollers rushed to the scene in Western Extension and positively identified this vehicle as the one that left the Caltex Garage. Upon their arrival of Benoni SAPS, the perpetrators admitted guilt. They offered to immediately pay for the R400 petrol they stole earlier. The owner of the Caltex Garage, Mr Louis van der Westhuizen, was not prepared to accept this “admission of guilt” offer and insisted that these youngsters be brought to book for their crime, as he was convinced that they got away with the same crime many times before.
Three Made victim employees in own front arrested in yard Kempton Park A Sunwardpark resident On Thursday at 10:00, Ekurhuleni Security and loss control unit arrested three of its employees. The three suspects were stationed at the Electrical Depot in Kempton Park. A random security check was conducted at the gate by the EMPD loss control unit and they came across a suspicious blanket in one of the suspect’s vehicle. Upon investigation, nine 1m Bus-bars of copper steel was positioned under the blanket. The three male suspects, aged 20, 33 and 40, were positively identified as Electrical Department employees of Ekurhuleni and could not give a satisfactory account of the steel copper in their possession. They were arrested for possession of stolen goods and detained at Kempton Park Police Station. They are expected to appear at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
Drunken speedster among 25 arrested A 27-year-old male risk-taker in a Mercedes Benz sedan was arrested last weekend around 8:00 when he clocked 142km/h on the R23 between Rangeview and Airport Roads in Brakpan. The driver claimed he was rushing to pick up his cousin. Speedsters totalling ten were arrested on this stretch of the road between 5:00 and 8:00, when caught doing speeds of between 158km/h and 117km/h. They were all charged with reckless and negligent driving at Brakpan Police Station and are expected to appear soon in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court. Just the day before this incident, at around 7:40, a 24-year-old female driver was arrested in Benoni when she registered 103km/h in a 60km/h zone on Pretoria Road, between Malherbe and Miles Sharp Streets, claiming that she was late for work. Still on the same day on Rangeview and Airport Roads in Brakpan, which is an 80km/h zone, eight speedsters were locked up for excessive speeding with the highest clocking 133km/h. The arrests took place between 5:00 and 6:00. The day before this, between 5:00 and 9:00, six more arrests were made of speedsters on this very stretch of road. All the arrested speedsters were released on bail of R500 and are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of reckless and negligent driving.
was attacked outside her parents’ home last week when she approached her VW Golf parked just outside. According to reports the victim was walking to her car, about to leave, when a maroon BMW pulled up next to her vehicle and three armed suspects got out and started to struggle with her for her keys and jewellery. The victim’s father was already inside getting his firearm when his daughter was struggling. Shots were fired at the attackers when the father got to the gate and the criminals retaliated. The attackers eventually won the fight and got away with the victim’s car and the maroon BMW. Boksburg SAPS were first on the scene and the investigation is underway. The attackers are still at large.
Clive and Shaney took Thulani to the Boksburg North SAPS station to make his statement and to lay a theft charge against the youngsters. Benoni SAPS arrested the perpetrators and took them to the Boksburg North SAPS to be locked up for the weekend until their court appearance on Monday. This is yet another success story for the already famous Impala Park CPF patrollers. Francois Squire, the head patroller, and Daey Engelbrecht, the Sector 1 head patroller, are extremely proud of this 21-man team and wants all criminals to know that their slogan, Zero Tolerance for Crime, is exactly what they should take note and be scared of.
Bogus orders for goods – companies beware Businesses in the small to medium sector are falling prey to crime syndicates committing fraud in the Gauteng area. Different modus operandi is used but sales personnel must note the one most often used by criminals. The customers will request a quote to be faxed, and this individual will pretend to be from another legitimate company with an existing credit facility. It was also found that the suspects use the ordering company’s letterhead to request a quotation, as these very seldom raise any suspicion. The quote will be accepted and goods will be ordered as soon as possible. The company of the victim will then usually make use of a transport company to make such deliveries. Merchandise would then usually be delivered on some street corner. Someone else will then take over the transportation. The other method used by the person making the order is to have the merchandise delivered to the
legitimate company, but before the delivery vehicle can reach the destination it will be redirected to an unknown destination. After some time the victim will request payment only to discover that the real company never placed an order. In some cases the suspect will do an electronic funds transfer. The victim will check their bank account and release the goods, only to find out later that a stolen cheque had been deposited into the account. How to ensure this does not happen to you: • Do not release the goods unless the funds were cleared at the bank. • Always confirm an order in writing with an existing client. Do not call back on a number provided by the ‘ordering company’ but make telephonic contact with your clients from existing telephone records to verify authenticity of the number and or order. Inform your courier or transport service provider that goods only be delivered at a legitimate business address of the company who placed the order.
AfriForum backs Afrikaans callers in crises During a recent call to the 10111 emergency line of the South African Police Service (SAPS), AfriForum had to hear the operators refuse to take calls in Afrikaans. When service was requested in Afrikaans, the 10111 operator summarily disconnected the call. These actions by the emergency service is not only unconstitutional, they also endanger the lives of callers. AfriForum will take up the matter with National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, and has launched a complaints channel on its website (www.afriforum.co.za) where members of the public can submit information on similar experiences. According to Alana Bailey, Deputy CEO of AfriForum responsible for language matters, this is the umpteenth example of the failure of SAPS to offer service in an official language of the country, as is required by the Constitution, The Use of Official Languages Act and the Service Charter for Victims of Crime. “AfriForum regards this latest incident in a very serious light, because service provision by the 10111 emergency personnel is literally a matter of life and death,” Bailey said. The public can listen to one call being refused at
www.afriforum.co.za On 7 January the Deputy CEO of AfriForum, Ernst Roets, laid a complaint at the Lyttelton Police Station in Centurion because of their refusal to accept an affidavit in Afrikaans. The complaint had a positive outcome as AfriForum and the police station are now working together in a good spirit to ensure that the problem does not re-occur. More information will be made available next week. Unfortunately many complaints about the unilingual service in English by the police are still coming in. “Not all South Africans are able to speak or write English at a level that will hold up in court.” Language problems can literally derail the legal process. Victims of crime have the right to receive service in their own language and AfriForum wants the SAPS to do its duty in this regard,” Bailey emphasised. Any person who had experienced language problems at a South African police station or during a call to 10111, is requested to make the information available to AfriForum by filling out the form on the website at www.afriforum. co.za or to mail details to afriforum@afriforum.co.za. AfriForum will bring the matter to the attention of the Commissioner of Police and will try to find sustainable solutions to the problem.

By Miguel Abrahams Film has been a part of Indian culture for quite some time. Now, The Indian International Film Festival, along with Ster-Kinekor and Utkarsh Projects, brings a line-up of a number of Indian films, spread across South Africa in SterKinekor Cinemas. The opening film was Astu - Let it be, a Marathi film with a big heart and was screened at Ster-Kinekor The Zone@Rosebank. The film, directed by Sumitra Bhave and Sunil
Sukhtankar, and stars actors such as Dr Mohan Agashe, Iravati Harshe, Milind Soman, Amruta Subash, Nachiket Purnapatre, Devika Daftardar and Ila Bhate. The film centres on an old retired doctor who has Alzheimer’s and how this affects his environment and how his environment affects him. It also shares a familiar family struggle when dealing with a loved one that needs 24 hour care, and how a family experiences this in various ways. It explores how differently each family member copes with a sick loved one who does not know who he is.
he got the moves Recreating the King of Rock ‘n Roll, the one and only Elvis Presley, is either a hit or a miss. For Nathan Belt from the USA, however, this is second nature, and he is touring the world reliving the music of Elvis Presley. Belt is currently performing in South Africa at the Joburg Theatre; so if you are an Elvis fan and have dreamt of watching him live in concert, then Elvis - The Show is a must see. When the red velvet curtains lift and Belt appears on stage, it is easy to imagine that one has time-travelled back to the 20th century, to the golden years of Elvis Presley. Belt’s sleek black hair gelled up, his rolling hips and bobbing legs when he does the twist, and the familiar deep voice when he says “Thank you very much” were spot-on. His costumes were also reminiscent of each era in Elvis’ music career - from the white socks with black pants
and the grand blazers in his younger days, to the white glitter one-pieces reminiscent of his Las Vegas performances. Belt and his band covered a wide range of songs, which Belt sang live, from the rocking 50s right through to the 68 Comeback Special performance, and the more recent lighter Gospel songs. A few classics that were performed at the opening night included: Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Blue Suede Shoes, Can’t Help Falling in Love, The Wonder of You, and Dixieland. Belt’s energetic performance ensured that he captured each and every audience member’s undivided attention. He frequently interacted with the audience and gave out many scarves to excited female fans. What made the show especially memorable was the many references made to Elvis and his
It’s a sweet story, with great acting that leaves you with a smile on your face and thinking the world still has so much to give. All this is given to us through the rich Marathi culture, customs and traditions that lift your soul. The audience had the chance to meet one of the stars, Amruta Subash, who explained just how much the film means to her, “Film has a language that goes beyond languages.” South African actor Joe Mofela, who also attended the premiere, shared how much he loved the film and cinematography.
ALL SHOOK UP: Nathan Belt passionately reliving the golden years of Elvis Presley.
life throughout the show. Belt often explained the history behind a song, which made the lyrics very insightful and meaningful. Belt succeeded in presenting the audience with a sincere celebration and tribute to Elvis, instead of becoming just another imitation of Elvis.
Elvis - The Show will be showing until 2 February in The Mandela at Joburg Theatre. Seat prices range from R100 to R250. Tickets are on sale at www.joburgtheatre.com, or by phoning the theatre’s ticket line on 0861 670 670. There are also specials available for groups and senior citizens.

very year thousands of matriculants with Bachelors and Diploma passes scramble to secure a space at universities and colleges. What many of these eager applicants do not realise, is that not all private academic institutions are as legitimate as they claim to be. Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE), SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution, has cautioned prospective students to carefully scrutinise institutions before signing up to ensure that they are legitimate. “Thousands of newly matriculated young people are being turned away at universities due to space constraints. It is encouraging to see so many prospective students who
are considering private higher and further education institutions as alternatives. It is therefore most regrettable that there are still some unscrupulous people exploiting students’ difficult situation, for fraudulent and selfish financial gain,” says Dr Coughlan. “Most private institutions operating throughout the country are registered and accredited and almost all offer a viable alternative for students seeking a post-school study opportunity, but it is a travesty that the actions of some taint the whole sector,” Coughlan says. Students must check the credentials of private institutions and ensure that it is registered and able to offer the qualification for which they are applying. Private institutions are required to adhere to the same rigorous quality assurance processes as state universities, meaning that if you register at the right private institution, you are able to gain a qualification of equal standing and quality. “There are a few key questions to ask to which there are some
simple answers, and if an institution is able to respond appropriately, it is worth considering,” Dr Coughlan says. “Students eager to sign up in the current climate where spaces at tertiary institutions are scarce, may be tempted to forego this little bit of additional hassle. But failing to make the effort makes you enormously vulnerable to scamsters.” According to Dr Coughlan, if students take the time to ask key questions, they contribute to strengthening the private higher education sector by making it harder for scamsters to continue to operate. Before signing up, students must ask the institution: • To show their certificate of registration with the Department of Higher Education. It should detail the campus, provider and the qualifications offered. No certificate – no go. • Whether it is accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education. All higher education
qualifications need to be accredited. If they are not accredited, they will not appear on the certificate referred to above. There is no other document detailing the accreditation; which is why checking if the qualification is on the certificate is an essential step. • For the SAQA NQF identity numbers. All the qualifications must be registered on the NQF by SAQA. All the key information about the registration of an institution is available at the Register of Private Higher Education Institutions, which is kept by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The information is also readily available from reputable institutions. Alternatively, students can phone the Department of Education’s toll-free number (0800 265 266) to check whether private institutions are registered.

The new Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG All-Rounder with driving performance Affalterbach – Mercedes-AMG rigorously continues its product initiative with the new GLA 45 AMG. This performance brand of Mercedes-Benz makes a dynamic statement in the strongly growing segment of the compact SUV. The combination of a powerful
and distinctive design, exclusive features and superior engine power and driving performance, makes this unique addition the most powerful series-production four-cylinder engine in the world, with 265kW of power and 450 Newton metres of torque on the road. The new GLA 45 AMG high-performance
SUV also shines with regard to emissions and fuel consumption figures. With a fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined; CO2: 175 g/ km) and compliance with EU 6 emissions standards, the GLA 45 AMG once more provides proof that Mercedes-AMG’s maximum performance does not come at the expense of environmental compatibility. The GLA 45 AMG also holds the pole position with regard to driving dynamics: it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). Thanks to the combination of standard-fit performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC allwheel-drive and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission, the GLA 45 AMG impresses with its equally sporty and efficient drive system concept. According to Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, “The response to the
concept GLA 45 AMG during the world première at the Los Angeles International Auto Show has reaffirmed our decision to launch this new AMG model. Currently there is no segment growing faster than that of compact SUVs. For Mercedes-AMG it is therefore a logical step to make a dynamic statement in this segment with the GLA 45 AMG. Our new high-performance-SUV not only offers the world’s most powerful series-production fourcylinder engine, but also impressively low fuel consumption and emissions figures. Not least on account of the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the GLA 45 AMG is a true AMG when it comes to driving dynamics.”

Top SA team for Davis cup tie against Monaco
“I am very excited about representing South Africa again. It is always an honour and a very fun as well as hard working week, with the opportunity to learn a lot and represent my country again. Looking forward to playing at Irene Country Club I have only heard good things about it.” - Ruan Roelofse
South Africa will go guns-a-blazing into their Euro/Africa Zone Group 2 Davis Cup tie against Monaco from 31 January to 2 February at the Irene Country Club. Tennis South Africa announced a strong squad to take on the Monegasque’s, comprising of Izak van der Merwe, Rik de Voest, Raven Klaasen, Ruan Roelofse and Nikala Scholtz. The team will be captained by John-Laffnie de Jager. Despite South Africa’s top player Kevin Anderson not making himself available for the tie, De Jager said he was pleased that Izak van der Merwe had recovered from injury and was available. “I am happy that Izak has recovered from his injury and this can be a good start for him,” said De Jager. It was in April of last year that Van der Merwe sustained a chronic injury from playing an excessive amount of tennis. “I have not played any events since surgery (a small part of the heel bone was removed) on the 18th of April last year. Davis Cup will be my first event back. I have been training for the last few months preparing hard for this tie.” “The recovery from my heel injury has been a slow process but it has gone very well. Over the last few weeks I made great progress on the practice court. It has taken a lot of patience but I look forward to getting back on the Davis cup team and competing on the ATP Tour,” said Van der Merwe. The tie will be a special one for Rik de Voest who will be playing international tennis for the first time at his home courts in Irene, where he started the game at the age of 5. “It is going to be amazing to play a Davis Cup tie at Irene Country Club,” said De Voest.” I believe the exposure to international players and the national team will further benefit the development and interest in tennis at Irene. Now nearing the end phase of my tennis career, and with my long history with the club, it’s going to be extra special to play a Davis Cup tie at the club where it all began for me.” De Jager said that De Voest and Van der Merwe were very good high altitude players and Nikala Scholtz had also enjoyed great success at altitude. Ruan Roelofse has proved, according to De Jager, to be “a great all-round player that can play singles and

doubles”, giving the Captain good choices when naming his final four. A key member of the team announced is the evergreen Raven Klaasen, the team’s doubles specialist. Klaasen is playing the best tennis of his career at the age of 31 years. Ranked 45th in the world doubles ranking, Klaasen is enjoying a solid Australian Open run where he has reached the doubles quarter-finals with his American partner Eric Butorac. Today Klaasen and Butorac shocked top seeds and the world’s top doubles duo Bob and Mike Bryan of the USA. Last year Klaasen captured 3 titles on the ATP World Tour, resulting in him breaking into the top 50 of world doubles for the first time. “I am very happy with the team to face Monaco. It is a very experienced team I selected,” said De Jager. “Rik, Raven and Izak have more than 20 years of Davis Cup experience between them. It is crucial for us to win this match because we want to be back in group 1 in 2015.” “Irene Country Club is a great venue and we hope to get lots of support from the local tennis supporters,” added De Jager. Sithole conquers Australia
BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS: Sithole made his ambitions known early when he won his first title for 2014 in Sydney. (Photo from www.itftennis.com)
South African Sports Star, Lucas Sithole has already stamped his mark on 2014 by winning his first title of the year - the Apia Sydney International Open which took place from 10-14 January 2014. World number 2, Lucas Sithole had a great year in 2013, where he won the quads singles title at the British Open in July 2013 and became the 1st South African to win a US Open grand slam singles title in SA Sports. Triple amputee Lucas Sithole is showing he is on top form and determined to get closer to his career dream of becoming world no 1. The quads event at the APIA Sydney International Open, along with the British Open and Airports Company South Africa SA Open, is considered one of the top six events on the NEC International Wheelchair Tennis tour. Although Sithole took the title, it was not all smooth sailing. He lost his match against former world no 5 Jamie Burdekin (GBR), where Sithole took the 1st set 6-3, but the determined Burdekin took the next two sets 7-6(5), 7-6(4). Despite this shaky start, Sithole stayed focused and managed to bounce back after his loss, winning all the other round robin matches comfortably, including the quads singles final match against Britain’s world no 7, Antony Cotteril 6-1, 6-3. The South African’s superb performance and comfortable victories secured him his first title of 2014. SA Sport Awards winners Kgothatso Montjane and Lucas Sithole along with Evans Maripa will now be competing in the Melbourne Open from 16-19 January 2014. Sithole and Montjane will play in the Australian Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships Grand Slam in Melbourne 22-25 January.

Bafana’s CHAN hopes
South Africa fell out of the CHAN 2014 tournament on Sunday, as they were beaten 3 – 1 by Nigeria’s Super Eagles. The game, which was the last of Bafana’s Group A fixtures, took place at a packed Athlone stadium and was a make or break for Bafana, who failed to secure a place in the second round of the tournament when they played to a 1 all draw with Mali on Wednesday, 15 January. South Africa was 2 – 0 down in the 30th minute thanks to some questionable defensive errors and decisive striking via the boot of Ejike Uzoenyi and a cracker by Ifeanyi Ede from the penalty spot. South Africa failed to play to their strength, which is a pacey game of carpet football; instead they panicked and were forced to use an aerial ball to bypass the Nigerians resilient midfield. Again and again this tactic failed because of the size and strength dominance the Nigerian defence enjoyed over the home team’s strikers. The mountain became even higher when Uzoenyi curled his 64th minute shot around the fully stretched Moeneeb Josephs, scoring Nigeria’s third goal and sinking the hearts of many Bafana fans. Bafana did manage to momentarily replace the smiles on their fans’ faces when Bernard Parker converted from the penalty spot after Katlego Mashego was brought down by a tackle from behind, but unfortunately this was too little and too late.
