New GM for Carnival City

Annemie Turk, Matthew Cook & Michelle Smith. Annemie Turk recently took over the role of General Manager at Carnival City, from her previous position as Group Gaming Manager at Tsogo Sun. She “was [also] responsible for developing and executing the first Group Slots Host Championship in

South Africa and internationally. Annemie’s strengths also lie in aligning gaming operations to marketing strategies and initiatives.” With her newly appointed energetic team – Michelle Smith (Marketing Manager), Elroy van

Blerk (Operations Manager) and Matthew Cook (Events and Entertaining Manager) – Annemie says “Carnival City will become the family friendly, community focused, gaming and entertainment destination in the East Rand.” On her plans for

social responsibility, Annemie says “[Carnival] will continue to focus on education as I strongly believe that an educated community is essential for an economically prosperous community. We will share details of individual projects in due course.”

We at the tame TIMES are very excited at the appointment of Annemie and her dynamic team and look forward to working with them on future ventures. Their dedication to one-on-one discussions speaks to their willingness to explore new ideas.

MAJOR DRUG BUST IN WADEVILLE Monica Supra

MONEY FOR DRUGLORDS: R2 Million worth of Mandrax were found in Wadeville. A drug lab with R2 million worth of Mandrax tablets was discovered by the Hawks and the South African Police Services on 4 March. Three men aged between 26 and 35 were arrested during the major drug bust that

took place near Wadeville, Germiston last week. According to police, the men were found in possession of the drugs and the alleged ringleader was among those arrested. Chemicals, equipment, a delivery vehicle, Mandrax tablets and

CRIME-STARTER: in small plastic bags powder, were also seized. Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi from SAPS said that they were still trying to ascertain if the arrested parties were part and parcel of a bigger syndicate, and were also checking whether they could be connected

to other drug labs in the Johannesburg area. “Two suspects were allegedly found busy manufacturing and pressing Mandax tablets. One was arrested at the scene while the other managed to escape,” he said.

EDITOR When last did you visit the library, choose a book and just go and sit in a corner, allowing the story to take you on a journey to never-never land? We often say life is so expensive, and complain either that we’re not making enough money, working too hard, or are too unemployed to simply take a break from the stress. We drown our sorrows in one or the other addiction, whether it is drugs, alcohol, soapies, or complaining. We take our stress out on our children, creating fear in them for us and missing out on their eyes-wide-open kind of excitement when they see daddy or mommy. The clouds forms shapes in the sky and the sun paints just the right pictures for us to stand in awe at dusk and at dawn. But we often miss it because we are too busy, or have too many problems, or are too concerned with this and with that, or are even too busy chasing money. “The best things in life are free” can be seen on a dirty child’s face, with torn clothes and an empty stomach when he laughs from his tummy while rolling in the grass with his friends, or plays in the mud the whole day. Rediscover the freedom you were born with, not through substances, or supplements, or soapies, or SUVs, but by observing the sublime goodness in Creation. Listen to your breathing and be grateful.

12th National CANSA Shavathon

“The CANSA Shavathon is [an event] in support of a very worthy cause, namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors.” From 28 February to 6 March various shopping centres and malls, workplaces and other organisations accommodated CANSA in hosting their 12th national Shavahton. On Saturday 28 February, the tame Times visited the event at the East Rand Mall. We CANSA: Marion and her mother at met a very emotional Marion, who had shaved off all her hair, and her mother Shireen. CANSA Shavaton Shireen is a cancer survivor who recently had

to restart cancer treatment when she was once again diagnosed with colon cancer. “It is a difficult journey” said Shireen, “but [Marion] has been my lifeline.” A group of women friends had their hair sprayed in celebration of their victory over cancer. One held up a banner reading: “It came, we fought it and survived!! Eliza-Marie and Bernice. It’s your turn!!!” Many others, young and old, had their hair shaved or sprayed - some in support of family members, others in support of the cause, and some celebrating their victory over cancer. The funds raised will be used to further the fight against cancer and provide support for cancer patients and their families.

Sunward Park Crime Awareness Campaign

Members of the Sunward Park CPF, EMPD and SAPS at the start of the crime awareness drive The Sunward Park Community Policing Forum (CPF), South African Police Service (SAPS) and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) gathered at the Sunward Park Shopping Centre on Saturday 28 February to kick off their Crime Awareness Campaign. This joint campaign is an effort to create awareness among the residents of Sunward Park of the types of crime that are most prevalent within the area. According to Mr Peter van Rooyen, the chairperson of the Sunward Park CPF,

housebreaking remains the greatest threat to the community. The break-ins, however, happen mostly during the day when residents are at work, or out on business. In the evening, when the CPF patrols the area, the number of housebreakings decreases. The campaign also aims to encourage the community to give their full support in the fight against crime by becoming more involved with the CPF. Funds were also raised on the morning through wors-rolls sales. The CPF is not a funded body, so volunteers assisting the

community often not only give their time but also their money. For this reason fund-raising becomes a necessity in order to support the cause. For any enquiries, or to join the CPF, contact Peter van Rooyen on 082 299 0707.

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” – Nelson Mandela Ndoji Handy Manika, a 16-year-old learner at Voortrekker High School and a Dawn Park resident, seems to understand the above quote by the late President Nelson Mandela very well. This is the realisation one comes to when you listen to what motivated him to help. Handy is involved in numerous projects, acting as ambassador for various NPOs and assisting one of his teachers, Mrs Maritz, to reach out and help shape a better future for many of his fellow learners and community members. Handy says that his interest in assisting his fellow countrymen almost came as an epiphany when he was in Grade 7 at Dawn Park Primary School. He was appointed as head boy at the school and in this role had to interact with fellow learners. Because of his leadership role within the school he became more aware of the fact that many learners were not doing their homework and teachers were shouting at these learners for not doing their homework, saying that they were lazy. In analysing the classroom situation, it raised the question for him: “What if the reason for the learner who does not do his/ her homework is that s/he does not have a pencil or a pen, or even a book to do his/her homework in?” He realised that in order to eliminate excuses for not doing homework, every learner in the country should have the stationery required and then stationery would no longer be an excuse. This brought the then Grade 7 learner to the realisation that he should do something to make a difference by assisting in the cause for all learners to have not only stationery, but also food, so that they could remain focused at school. It was only a few years later, in 2013, that he could act on his vision to help the youth

and his fellow learners. He joined an NPO which asked him to be their ambassador in the East Rand to feed hungry learners. He also became involved with a youth organisation in Dawn Park that reaches out to the youth of the community, helping them through motivational speaking, guidance and tutoring of the school-going youth, at the local clinic. Mrs Maritz, one of Handy’s teachers at Voortrekker, is as passionate about serving the youth, especially learners, as Handy. Voortrekker High School has an annual food drive when people can donate non-perishable food that is used to feed the less fortunate learners. Besides her passion for her learners, education and teaching, her drive comes from the feeling of powerlessness and pain she experiences when looking into the eyes of a hungry child. This drive led her, along with Handy, who she says constantly reminded her that they should do something to get the feeding scheme going, to investigate the possibility of a project which could supply needy children from various schools within Boksburg with a ready-made food pack. The project, however, needs financial backing and volunteers to assist with the setting up and running of it. She urges the communities of Boksburg to help in this urgent need to feed needy school-going children by donating to this programme and offering their time to run it. This feeding programme will not only benefit the learners from Voortrekker High School, but the aim is also to reach all schools within Boksburg. “We are the future, but we’re not acting like it. Why are we not acting like it? Is it because we don’t want to, or because at home we do not have food and pencils?” This is the question that drives Handy to support projects to help young people to succeed, and why he latches on to the compassion and passion of Mrs Maritz to bring real change for young people within all institutions of learning. For more information, or to assist or fund the food project, contact Voortrekker High School on 011 917 9586/7.

SAB renovates Dawn Park VEC

SAB RENOVATES DAWN PARK VEC: Members of the Dawn Park SAPS, VEC and CPF, test a couch that came as part of the donations from SAB.

In 2006 a Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) was opened at the Dawn Park Police Station. According to Sergeant Tema, the need for a VEC at the station was identified because of the influx of people who needed counselling and support after falling victim to crime. Prior to the establishment of the VEC office at the Dawn Park Police Station, the victims had to be transported to social workers and it was discovered that the additional travelling and delay in counselling would, at times, even further traumatise some victims. Mrs Malebo Constance Msiza volunteered her time and effort, as VEC Coordinator, to ensure the centre was kept well maintained and serving those in desperate need of its services. On Wednesday 3 March, the Cluster Commander Major General Mosikili, the Station

Commander Lieutenant Colonel Tindeka, Community Police Forum Chairperson Mr Foster, the VEC Coordinator and other guests present had a chance to view the newly renovated mobile unit from where the VEC operates. SAB sponsored the renovations and also donated furniture, nappies for the young victims, toys and other items needed by the centre. Mrs Mamabolo, Corporate Affairs Specialist at SAB, said that their product was never intended to destroy lives, but to be used recreationally for relaxation and enjoyment. Sergeant Tema, spokesperson for the Dawn Park Police Station, thanked SAB for their contributions to the VEC. He also encouraged members of the public to support the centre and use its services, should the need arise.

Victory at Dakar Rally

VICTORIOUS: South Africans celebrate their Dakar Rally victory.

South African teams again performed with distinction in this year’s Dakar Rally. Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz (Toyota Imperial Hilux) were once again on the podium, Leeroy Poulter and Rob Howie (Toyota Imperial Hilux) finished 16th with Johan van Staden/Mike Lawrenson (KEC Nissan Navara) 31st and Jurgen and Daniel Schroder (PS Laser Nissan Navara) 38th. This year also saw a record number of South African built or designed vehicles taking part in the South American classic. These were made up of 18 Toyota Hilux models, three Nissan Navaras, two Renault Dusters and one Ford Ranger. A revamped calendar of events this year sees a later start and earlier finish to this year’s Donaldson Cross Country Championship. This accommodates a growing South African presence in the Dakar Rally, and local teams entering the South American race will now have longer preparation and recovery periods.
