President Jacob Zuma declared Martin Thembisile ‘Chris’ Hani’s grave a national heritage site at Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park, Boksburg on 10 April. The event coincides with the 22nd commemoration of the death of Hani. President Zuma also unveiled the Chris Hani Memorial and Walk of Remembrance Monument. The wife of the late Chris Hani, Dimpho Hani, and other dignitaries, laid wreaths at the gravesite. “This celebrated leader of the ANC and SACP and our people as a whole and
a soldier and chief of staff of Umkhonto Wesizwe, dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom, equality, justice, human dignity and a better life for all the people of South Africa,” said Zuma addressing the crowd during the launch. He added that the 22nd anniversary of the commemoration of Hani’s death took place during an important year, the year of the Freedom Charter. Chris Hani believed in the Freedom Charter, the President said, and quoted the following words by Hani: “It was important to have an ANC which accepted
the Freedom Charter, which committed itself to the implementation of the Freedom Charter. And we felt that the Freedom Charter was a revolutionary document in terms of the struggle for national liberation and democracy.” The President further urged people to continue working hard to deepen and consolidate democracy in the country as a memory to Hani, “and also deepen the extension of services to all, especially the poor and the working class.” Hani’s commemoration day was attended
by many political and union leaders, such as Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education and Training and the General Secretary of the SACP; Thulas Nxesi, Public Works Minister; Sidumo Dlamini, President of COSATU; Gwede Mantashe, General Secretary of the ANC, Mondli Gungubele, Ekurhuleni Mayor and other ministers, deputy ministers and MECs. Chris Hani, the former South African Communist Party leader, was shot and killed in his Dawn Park, Boksburg, home’s driveway on 10 April 1993.

Vaal Dam claims CPF member’s life
Riaan Nienaber of the Elspark CPF drowned on Saturday 11 April in the Vaal Dam after the canoe he was in capsized. Riaan was on a weekend away with his family at the Vaal Dam, when the canoe they were in capsized and both he and his son landed in the water. He managed to save his son’s life but could not get himself out of the water, and drowned. Riaan was described by members of the Elspark CPF as

So instead of considering the actions of the two individuals similarly and taking into account their upbringing, the racist will deliberately judge the whole race group not of his liking on a general perception of the race as a whole. a hero, who was always willing to step out and help in the fight against crime. Two weeks ago, he was one of the CPF members who gave chase when four men broke into a house in Elspark and when attempts were made to apprehend them, started shooting at members of the CPF. One suspect died in the incident and another was arrested. Riaan is survived by his wife, 2 children, his father and brother.
Let us think for a while... Being racist is for lazy people. I walk down a street, in a mall, or wherever else I would meet people, and I see people of different races, acting and reacting in different ways. I’d for instance find one black man who grew up in the rural parts of Kwazulu-Natal acting shocked at a man who is being instructed by his wife. Another black man might find this normal. A white Afrikaner man might act similarly surprised - like the black man from Kwazulu-Natal - at a man taking orders from his wife. But racism might inform the racist that the black man is backwards and primitive and does not understand that times are

A career in draughting and design through the African Academy Imagine seeing the building in whose design you played a part become a realit y, or imagine driving over a steel structured bridge that you helped design. These realities all started out as the drawings of the draughtsperson, who turns the ideas of the architect, engineer and the builder into a constructive, detailed plan. From rough sketches and notes, the skilled draughtsperson provides all the fine details and visual guidelines, according to specifications provided by engineers, architects and surveyors. With a flair for drawing and working with computers, the student enters into the field of computer-aided drawing (CAD) and draughting. And with special interests in architecture, mining, manufacturing, engineering, design, the electrical or civil fields, steel detailing or mechanical – as a draughtsperson you will achieve great success with the relevant skills and training in your area of choice. The African Academy is dedicated to the upliftment of skills in draughting and related industries, and provides training in the specialised scarce-skilled area of computer-aided design and draughting. “The main objective of our growth and development initiative is to create greater capacit y for additional unemployed individuals to access education and training, thereby placing greater number of unemployed individuals in industry,” said managing director, Kubera Naidoo.
Students need Maths, Science and Technical Drawing to enter this career. However, the African Academy has catered for those individuals who have a passion for the drawing field and wish to study draughting but do not have these subjects by offering a three-month Technical Draughting subject and outsourcing the Mathematics and Science to a partnering college on the same premises. One can then progress to the NQF 4 Draughting programme, which comprises a year’s study and covers all the different disciplines of engineering, such as building, mechanical, electrical draughting and structural steel detailing. All of this is done on computer with the draughting soft ware. Once in employment, students can then further progress their skills by studying the various programmes offered by the Academy on a level equivalent to the NQF Level 5, such as Structural Steelwork Detailing, Architectural Technology and Piping Draughting. To enable more students to study in the field, engineering draughting and design programmes from the African Academy are also now available nationally through distance learning. Gain the advantage of a future in an alternative career in draughting, which is registered as a scarce skill in South Africa. For further information contact the African Academy on 011 914 4340 or visit www.africanacademy.co.za

67 Blankets for Mandela Day The grannies of Eddy House in Benoni were very excited to see how their ‘knithathon’ in support of the 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day resulted in the most beautiful blankets. The 67 blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is a national project that aims to continue the legacy of the late Nelson Mandela, by knitting blankets that will eventually be donated to underprivileged people. The ladies of Eddy House also contributed by knitting strips or squares that were stitched together to make the blankets. These blankets will be placed at the Union Buildings to commemorate the late Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

Have your say on IDP
The Ekurhuleni Metro is seeking community comments on the draft of the Integrated budget and Development Plan (IDP). Integrated development planning is a process through which municipalities prepare a strategic development plan which extends over a fiveyear period. This then guides and informs all planning, budgeting, management and decision-making processes in the municipality. Residents of Ekurhuleni and various other stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on the developmental programme of the Metro as contained in the IDP for 2015/16 and the Budget for the next three years. The municipality undertook a consultative process on the review of its Integrated Development Plan with ward councillors and ward committee members in September last year. The inputs received through the consultative process formed the basis of the draft IDP 2015/16 and draft multi-year Budget for 2015/16 - 2017/18 that were tabled at the Council meeting on 29 January 2015 for the purpose of consultation with stakeholders. Before the draft IDP and draft Budget are approved by Council in May 2015, the acceptability of the proposals must be tested with the communities. As from 14 to 22 April, Ekurhuleni will hold IDP and Budget meetings in all its 20 Customer Care Areas at 18:00 pm to discuss the draft documents with communities. Council will brief stakeholders on the proposed developmental programme and allow communities to comment on the proposals. Proposed new tariffs, the new valuation roll, credit control and indigent benefits as well as budget proposals related to capital projects across the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality are expected to dominate discussions at the Metro’s Draft Integrated Development and Planning (IDP) and Budget public consultative meetings to be held over the next two weeks. This year, these IDP and Budget meetings will also be combined with the Mayoral Izimbizo to

give progress reports on service delivery issues. Over and above these meetings, stakeholders can, from now until April 30, access the draft IDP and draft Budget documents which are open for comment. These can be viewed electronically at any time on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za; or at public libraries, pay points and Customer Care Centres during office hours. Comments can be filled in and dropped into “Budget Tips” boxes at the above-mentioned offices or emailed to budgettips@ekurhuleni. gov.za. Public enquiries can also be made by contacting the Metro’s Strategy Planning and Support office on 011 999 6760/1/2/3.

WALKING FOR A GOOD CAUSE By Alexandria Allan
Dawn Park’s
BRAND-NEW mall
“A DEVELOPMENT FOR THE PEOPLE
It went from nothing to something, from the ground up, from a dark place to a well-lit building, from an empty bushy park into a shopping complex. It has only been a few weeks since the grand opening of the centre and residents describe it as follows; “We’re still not used to it yet,” “It makes you feel out of Dawn Park,” therefore “It is not registered in the head” Residents of Dawn Park and its neighbours will be served by the new mall, due to the fact that the complex is within walking distance from Villa Liza and Windmill Park. Just before the final touches were added to the construction of the centre, rumours of strikes and financial difficulties circulated, and most residents lost hope of ever seeing such a development in their area. The project took far longer to complete than expected and at one point construction stopped for a few weeks. The five years of expectations and promises felt like aeons as big investors, various partners and numerous stakeholders strived to turn this work-in-progress into an actual mall. Dawn Park residents had to travel long distances to do their shopping, they used to do their shopping in Sunward Park, Vosloorus, Boksburg and Johannesburg CBDs. The monthly shopping trips proved to be expensive in transport costs; therefore the local shopping mall is a welcome relief for many cash strapped consumers living in and around Dawn Park. Within the last few years though, Dawn Park has seen a huge increase in the number of tuck shops. Before these, only wholesalers were in walking distance for local residents. Together these businesses monopolized the supply of basic needs to residents who queued up at corner shops to purchase necessities from the Pakistani traders found on almost every street corner of Dawn Park and its neighbours. The new complex has now put a Shoprite, KFC, Build It, Capitec Bank, Debonairs, Chisa Nyama, furniture wholesalers and others within walking distance. It is also the biggest job creator in a neighbourhood in which a third of the youth

are unemployed; and a centre of attraction for the younger generation with exclusive features like indoor soccer to keep the youth occupied positively instead of just hanging around on street corners with nothing to do. Ataxi rank within the complex will accommodate transport facilities for those without private cars, so the community will no longer have to endure long waits in queues and suffer
Dawn Park’s approximately 42 000 residents, especially the youth among them, now have many opportunities and a bright future. This is the place where Chris Hani - a man who fought the struggle against apartheid because he believed in freedom, democracy and development for his people - lived and died. This is a semisuburb where young people can make it happen. because of not knowing where to catch a taxi. Most of the local residents that we interviewed had plenty to say about the politics and logistics of how recruitment for jobs at the mall is taking place. They believe that 80 percent of people employed at the complex should be Dawn Park residents, but of the youth claim that shops at the new
mall are mainly staffed by Villa Liza and Windmill Park residents. They say that very few Dawn Park applicants were called for interviews since submitting their applications six months ago. There are also complaints about long working hours at stores like Shoprite and the fact that some of them have not yet signed employment contracts. The youth also believe that there is a lot of politics involved within management - but they still have great hopes for the Dawn Park Mall. As for the local small businesses that have always provided for the fast food and daily basic needs of residents - including the Pakistani corner-traders - most say “business is slow,” shops are emptier and even loose cigarette sales are moving slowly. Kota and fast food tuck shops have also experienced a drastic change, with most of them lacking customers and passing traffic, and fearing for the future of their businesses. The attractive new complex is bright and shiny, and its fast-food outlets are open for long hours. The KFC is open 24/7 and the Shoprite sells fresh produce at reasonable prices. This has turned the neighbourhood into a place of activity and daily hustlers. “Even our roads are busy with traffic now, say most of the residents. People from surrounding neighbourhoods are attracted to Dawn Park, meaning that more money is spent and earned there; and employment, contracts, private deals and opportunities for business are more likely to arise there. Property values will increase significantly, taxis and transport in general run more efficiently, there are many new houses and apartment complexes and new people have moved in. Dawn Park’s approximately 42 000 residents, especially the youth among them, now have many opportunities and a bright future. This is the place where Chris Hani - a man who fought the struggle against apartheid because he believed in freedom, democracy and development for his people - lived and died. This is a semi-suburb where young people can make it happen. Dawn Park is no longer just a place of dreams or possibilities, but a place of realities.
The annual Cancer Walk in Boksburg town is a cause that I have followed and regularly participate in. Walking for a cause that is killing so many people on a daily basis is really an honour and also a sad reality of how many people have died of the disease. This year the walk was held at the St Dominic’s School grounds on 20 March 2015. The number of people who pitched up to camp out and do the 12-hour walk was a true inspiration, and this included our very own Reiger Park active crew. This makes you realise how many people care about fighting this disease. The majority of the people that was doing the walk have lost at least one loved one from the disease and some see a member/ members of their family fighting this disease every day. The highlight of the evening is when the lights are switched off and a moment of silence is observed to honour those who have died from cancer. It is a moment when you as an individual get to think about how grateful you should be to wake up each day and be healthy and not take life for granted. It is a moment when you continue to pray for those around you who are suffering from this disease, because despite so many people dying from this disease there are people who have survived it. To all those people fighting cancer at this moment: keep the faith as there are many survivors. Keep fighting and know that you have so many people around you who love and support you during this difficult time. “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference” – Winston Churchill

Cape Town teen tries to join ISIS A 15-year-old girl from Cape Town, who allegedly ran away from home to join the Islamic State, was caught moments before a British Airways flight was about to leave for Johannesburg, followed by a flight to Saudi Arabia, according to State Security Minister, David Mahlobo. Relatives of the girl contacted authorities after she disappeared from her parents’ home on Sunday morning. It was discovered that the teenager, whose mother is a medical doctor, was missing when she failed to answer her grandparents’ call for breakfast. She had left the house after locking her bedroom door and escaping through a window. According to Yusuf Abramjee from Crime Line, one of the family members approached them for help. He added that dockets suggesting that the group had recruited her, were found in her room. It was initially thought by the police that she was a runaway and the family were turned away by Landsowne police, who told them, in contravention of police procedure, that they had to wait 24 hours before reporting her as missing. When Abramjee was contacted by community leaders, he alerted the Western Cape police commissioner, who raised the alarm with the State Security Department. Airports and border posts were immediately notified and given a description of the girl. The Institute for Security Studies stated that such organisaions are becoming increasingly proficient in using social networks to recruit members. According to the institute’s Anton du Plessis, the schoolgirl could have been deliberately targeted. Du Plessis added that it demonstrates that ISIS is very strategic and clever in terms of how they target the youth. Brian Dube, spokesperson for the State Security Minister, told The Times that this is not the first case they are investigating. They have been picking up information about other possible recruitments in South Africa. Mahlobo told eNCA that the girl had been using technology and social platforms to interact with strangers. She had also been reading some material suggesting that she was interested in joining the terror group. He added that while the ministry is constantly searching through international cyberspace for any evidence of terror threats or recruitment, he is concerned that recruiters have direct access to children, according to EWN. The girl was returned safely to her parents after she was taken off the flight. It is still being investigated how she obtained the funds for the airfare. The entire family is being questioned by State Security to establish exactly how she was recruited and what her role was to be. (News 24 / EWN www.rdm.co.za)
