Day light robbery

FROM AM TO PM: The lights in the park in Jansen Park, Boksburg, are burning day and night. While Eskom is telling South Africans to save on electricity, street and park lights in Jansen Park, Boksburg, are burning day and night. Steve and Rina Coetzee from Moore Street in Jansen Park say they have been trying to report the matter to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for over

three weeks, but without luck. “We have to save on electricity, but the municipality isn’t doing their part. And every time we try to report the matter, we only reach the EMM call centre’s mailbox. We are either told to leave a message, or that the mailbox is full,” says a disgruntled Steve. “We’ve left messages, but no one has even

Going potty DIGGING DEEP: This pothole on the corner of O’Hare and Moore Streets, Jansen Park, Boksburg, is making residents go potty. Steve and Rina Coetzee, residents of Moore Street, say that people have to drive like drunks to avoid the pothole, which is right in the middle of the road. This is just one of many problems currently plaguing the suburb. The pothole has been reported to the municipality.

bothered to return our calls,” adds Rina. Rina says they even went to all the houses in their street to ask their neighbours also to report that the street and park lights are burning 24 hours a day. “But the people seemed apathetic and I doubt that they even bothered to pick up their phones. It is sad how the people aren’t

standing together to fix this problem,” she says. The tame TIMES reported the matter to EMM spokesman Themba Gadebe and asked him to explain why the lights are burning day and night, but at the time of going to print, he had not yet responded. He did promise that the matter will be attended to.

We would like to thank the community of Actonville and all surrounding areas for their generous support during our bereavement. The outpouring of generosity, of love, kindness, and compassion, has been heart-warming. Thanks for all the donations, flowers, food, phone-calls, prayers and messages. We want you all to know we are so very grateful. The support shown to us was a warm and bright ray of light representing good and caring people who were attentive to the needs of others. Thanks do not seem enough, so we want to acknowledge the neighbours, friends, family, and community who have helped us in our time of bereavement. A special thanks to: St Joseph’s Catholic Church; Far East Undertakers; KSA Darts Association; Westham Eagles; Sherino Printers; Ram Flowers; Logan Flowers; and Lloyd’s Fresh Produce. Life lessons learned on 29 December 2014: • Live happy side by side, in harmony with each other; • Love one another, as you love yourself; • Laugh, embrace life, and have fun, like

kids do; There was an immense sense of togetherness in the community that we have never experienced before – phenomenal; • Two different religions side by side, total tolerance from everyone present; • Let us make them proud, and live like the two Masters – Tino and Enzo. Rest in peace master TINO and master ENZO. You two angels have delivered something special in the community never experienced before. God bless you all, The Naidoo, Moonsamy, Poonen & James families.

BLIND FAITH: Gerhard Fereira was the speaker at the February ERBW meeting.

LADIES IN RED: Cindy Tift, Veronica Tift, Loren Wilson and Justine Hart attended the ERBW meeting.

NETWORKING: Loren Wilson from Travel Counsellor in the red and ERBW committee member Glynis Holdsworth.

MOTIVATED: Hazel Gibb and Diane Smuts.

REST IN PEACE: Tino Naidoo and Enzo Poonen.

All photos taken by Veronica Tift East Rand Business Women (ERBW) held their first meeting of 2015 on 11 February at Birchwood Hotel. They said a sad farewell to Susan Noppe as the chairlady, and welcomed in Marinda Lombard to chair the organisation for the next two years. As no new nominations were received for the rest of the committee, it remains unchanged for 2015 with the exception of Colleen Qvist, who had to resign due to work pressure. “Our guest speaker for the morning was Gerhard Fereira who, despite being afflicted with blindness, has managed to accomplish so much more than many of us sighted folk. He has run the Comrades Marathon, 2 Oceans and City to City twice each and even the New York Marathon. On top of that he has climbed to base camp at Kilimanjaro and in 2014 climbed to base camp at Ama Dablam in the Himalayas,” says committee member Glynis Holdsworth. He explained the challenges faced by not being sighted on these climbs. A sighted person can start preparing their steps so that

they have the momentum to climb up the high rocky slope, whereas he suddenly finds himself almost on top of a rock and then needs to use much more energy than a sighted person to be able to lift himself up it. “His talk was amusing, challenging and a lesson in perseverance no matter what. His strongest message was: do not give up – face your challenges and with discipline, training, perseverance and humour we can accomplish whatever life puts in our way,” says Holdsworth. ERBW members took along donations of stationery for the Ukajede project – a sponsorship agreement between ERBW and Birchwood which helps children from underprivileged schools. “We want to thank everyone who brought along donations for this very worthy cause,” she says. The day also saw many exhibitors displaying their products and services – giving everyone a lovely opportunity to mingle, network and make new friends.

1 Lemon Chicken Strips with fettuccine.

At my math and science. And it paid off. SANRAL’s scholarship programme helped me to pay for my schooling and pave the way for my success.

Seokedzi Mothokwa was just one of the 179 learners that SANRAL’s scholarships from 2012-2013 is helped to realize his dreams of doing well and going on to study at university. It’s an investment for us, for him and for our country. Who knows what he may become – but we know that better education means more opportunities, and that means a better nation for us all.

By Natasha Kotze Justus Abrams and I went to try the fare at Pizza del Forno in the Farrarmere Shopping Centre, Benoni, last week. All I can say is “yum.” I tried the Lemon Chicken Strips with fettuccine pasta, which is chicken strips in a creamy lemon and mushroom sauce. The dish burst with flavour and there was a distinctly delicious lemony taste to it. The portion offered was also impressive. I could not finish it and took it home for a midnight snack, but unfortunately did not get the opportunity to enjoy that midnight snack - as my mom and dad each had a taste and then proceeded to finish it. I also tried the Chocolate Volcano for dessert. The idea was only to have a taste, but I ended up devouring the whole thing. This was a culinary experience I will not soon forget. Pizza del Forno gets two thumbs up from me. By Justus Abrams Unlike food critics, I only have a few phrases to describe food: “nice,” “very nice,” and - if you don’t believe me “no really, it was nice.” If I didn’t enjoy the food, the phrases used will be: “not nice” and “I won’t eat that again.” So how would I describe the Trinchado I had? Well… “very nice.” Let me explain why. I started eating the Trinchado and chips from the pizza basket it comes served in – made out of real pizza dough - with a knife and fork - which is proper, I guess. The steak chunks were tender, as described on the menu; the chips, tasty and the sauce, as one would expect, a mild Portuguese peri-peri sauce. The food was nice - the proper knife-and-fork-style of eating made the food taste “nice.” After a while, though, I realised that this knife and fork would definitely not help me with the pizza basket. So I decided to break a piece of the pizza basket off and dipped it into the sauce … wow! The texture and taste of the basket combined with the sauce made me wish I had many more phrases to describe food, as I could only come up with “wow.” This is how I want my Trinchado in future. For dessert I decided to go for my favourite: the Chocolate Brownie and ice cream. I haven’t had a brownie recently because wherever I tried it I was disappointed. So it was a risky choice, but I decided that seeing that the Trinchado had already filled me, I’d simply order the brownie so we could take a photo, have a little taste and have the rest as a take-away. My intention not to over-eat was crushed after the first scoop. All I can say is, as I’m writing this, I crave for more of that dessert. No take-away was needed.

Fikile Mbalula has risen to a new level of cool, some may say. The Sport and Recreation Minister is already known for rubbing shoulders with celebrities such as US singer Brandy, but has now set his own bar higher after hooking up with rap mogul P Diddy. Mbalula attended the NBA All Star Weekend – an event that sees the likes of musicians Rihanna, Jay-Z and Beyoncé on the guest list. The Minister spent time with Floyd “Money” Mayweather and P Diddy, whose real name is Sean Combs, at the function, of which a splash of pictures was uploaded onto his Instagram account. He captioned one of his photos: “Bye-bye New York, it was great super rawkus. See u soon sun Jo’burg is calling #hastalavista (sic)”. (iol.co.za)
