67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day On 18 July we celebrate Nelson Mandela Day. On this day each year, people from all over the world dedicate 67 minutes of their time towards a good cause - because former president Nelson Mandela served South Africa and the world for more than 67 years. In January this year a new initiative in line with this tradition was launched, called 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day. This initiative calls on anyone and everyone to knit or crochet a blanket and donate it towards those in need this winter. The initiative has since spread like wildfire and currently communities as far as the UK, Cyprus, Australia, Canada and America, to name a few, are knitting for the cause. It has become one of the biggest collaborative movements for Nelson Mandela Day and the East Rand community is proudly taking part in it. Benoni local Elsabe Booyens, East Rand Ambassador for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, who has worked closely with Mandela and his projects, said East Rand residents are very supportive of this initiative. The Benoni Country Club and many other East Rand residents, including Booyens and her family, form part of the initiative: “We joined the cause in January and it grew so fantastically. The drive around it was helping other people. It is showing others love on a fundamental level: you really put your love and care into this. Some of these blankets are exquisite works of art for which you would pay thousands. I take my time and invest it in you,” said Booyens. The initiative was founded by South African-born actress, radio personality and philanthropist Carolyn Steyn. Steyn explained that the initiative started off as a light-hearted challenge by her good friend Zelda la Grange, Nelson Mandela’s trusted assistant, and grew far beyond her wildest dreams. La Grange attended Steyn’s husband’s birthday party in December last year and while Steyn was boasting about her domestic abilities, La Grange proposed that she knit 67 blankets for Mandela Day this year. “I soon realised that it was impossible to do it on my own and put it on Facebook and invited friends to join in. It went completely viral,” explained Steyn. The initial aim was to collect as many blankets as possible to distribute on Nelson Mandela Day, but due to the low temperatures this winter, Steyn and her knitters have already started distributing the blankets. On Saturday 7 June they had a wonderful display of blankets at the foot of the Nelson Mandela statue in Nelson

Mandela Square in Sandton. The blankets were distributed in the township of Alexandra after the display. Stitch by stitch, knitters are continuing Madiba’s legacy and helping to keep thousands warm this winter. The 67 Blankets for Mandela Day team encourages communities to become part of this initiative. All you have to do is donate a hand-made blanket; sizes are single (150 cm x 200 cm) or baby (90 cm x 110 cm), for Nelson Mandela Day. To get involved with this wonderful initiative, get in touch with the team via the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Facebook Page or @67blankets. E-mail johanv@saxon.co.za or phone 0617 67 67 67. It warms my heart to see how these residents invest their time in others. With Nelson Mandela Day coming up on 18 July, more and more people are starting to participate in charity-driven initiatives, like the 67 Blankets for Mandela Day initiative. This is one example of how much we can achieve when everyone works towards a common goal.

I often think that my contribution is just a drop in the bucket, but with stories like these I am reminded that each drop eventually makes an ocean. With Mandela Day in mind, I am very excited to start planning my 67 minutes of showing that I care. Especially after former president Nelson Mandela’s passing last year, it is important that we continue his legacy. My question to you is: how will you be spending your 67 minutes for Mandela Day? Please let me know what you have planned, as I would like to cover it for the newspaper as well. Have fun!

Miss Earth South Africa national finalist Shannon Roscher recently partnered with Mr South Africa Top 50 finalist Brett Palframan to make a difference in the lives of Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Benoni. The two contestants made a difference by persuading friends and family to donate good used clothes to the Home, but believe that so much more can be done for charity with the help of their various communities. Palframan says, “I appeal to individuals, as well as organisations, schools and churches to rally their members to support our drive to help keep the less fortunate warm this winter. It is a known fact that thousands of South Africans are living on the streets and millions are living in informal settlements that don’t provide ample insolation to keep warm. With severe winter blasts expected this season, these people are in dire need of help, and we therefore appeal to anyone who can help provide or donate gently used clothing and blankets.” Roscher, as part of the Miss Earth drive to educate communities to preserve and protect the environment, believes that one can benefit both the community and the environment by donating used textiles and clothing to charities that will recycle and reuse them. “Most of us have old clothes hanging in our cupboards but we are either too sentimental or too embarrassed to throw them out because they might just be too worn. I can let you in on a little secret - nothing is ever too damaged or too worn to be donated to charity. Your threadbare jeans might just be turned into a handbag, a quilt or even an ottoman,” she explains. To help you declutter your closet, the two contestants provide some advice on how to go about it: 1.Get yourself a few big boxes or several bin bags and mark them ‘Charity’. 2.Keep the golden rule in mind: if you have not worn it for 6 to 12 months, you will not miss it. 3.Ask yourself the following questions: a.Do you really need so many T-shirts, sweat tops, jerseys, blankets, towels, sheets, curtains, and so on? b.Will the baby clothes that you are hanging on to, not benefit other children who are in desperate need? c.Is a particular garment still fashionable or flattering? d.Does a specific outfit make you feel frumpy or depressed? Only keep what makes you feel good. e.Dwell on the amazing zen you will feel knowing that you have helped the less fortunate or that your favourite charity has

Expired food for sale The selling of food by a supermarket in Sentrus Street, Crystal Park, is regarded as a health hazard to consumers until the owners comply fully with health regulations. The shop was found displaying expired food items on its shelves on two occasions when EMPD officers inspected it and the owners of the supermarket have not been able to present the proper documentation to the police. Benoni Precinct officers decided to seek assistance from the By-Law Unit to investigate. At the end of May, the sales assistants in the shop were made aware of the contravention of health regulations and were ordered to close the shop until health inspectors could conduct thorough investigations. Against the instructions of the EMPD By-Law Enforcement team, the shop owner continued selling meat, drinks and even baby food that reflected
lapsed expiry dates. Health Inspectors and the Metro Police demanded documentation pertaining to the operation of the business. The documentation produced, however, did not have the name of the person who claimed to be the owner on it, or the address in Crystal Park where the business is being operated. An inspection by the Health Department also revealed that the shop did not comply with the regulations of a business plying trade in foodstuffs – levels of hygiene were found to be extremely shocking. The owners were given 14 days by the Health Department officials to comply or face the full wrath of the law. They were told that the shop would be visited on Friday 20 June to check on its compliance and that authorities might be compelled to close down the business if it was still found to be noncompliant.

After a Hyundai H1 minibus belonging to an Ekurhuleni Municipality employee was hijacked on Wednesday 11 June from the driver in Dawn Park at around 10pm, the investigations of the EMPD Kathorus Crime Prevention Task Team led them to a notorious, wanted criminal living in Katlehong. They contacted him on 14 and 15 June to find out about his possible involvement in the hijacking of the minibus. Investigations by the EMPD Kathorus Task Unit later revealed that when the suspect realized that the Metro Police were hot on his heels, he attempted to siphon money from the victim by claiming he had already sold the minibus and needed money to reclaim it from the “buyer”. Informants were able to provide Metro Police officers with several contact numbers of the suspect, who was given a stern warning to surrender himself, as well as the minibus, to the police. The hijacked vehicle was found fairly intact, with its keys, at around 1am in Katlehong and taken to a place where the owner could officially retrieve it. Police are still hunting for the suspect, whose name and place of residence is known.

My kinders was my grootste rolmodelle toe hulle nog klein was. • My studentejare. • My eerste vakansie oorsee (verlede jaar in Japan- was beslis ‘n buitengewone ervaring!)

Conference People are losing trust in banks, governments, everything and anything. So the church must become trustworthy, and love must be between us. We need to celebrate God's life in us. Many people go to church and do not enjoy it, because it is just a church service and no celebration of God's life. We must be able to fellowship together and become the finishing generation. God is giving us the grace to change within ourselves. We are part of one huge army, marching forward for God, taking over domains. God is going to take us to high places to dismantle the work of the enemy. The fire of God is going to break out and as people of God, we must be under proper command. It is now the time of the church and it is God's time. There is going to be a fresh outpouring of God's grace all across the nations of the world and specifically South Africa. Clouds of God's rain are forming above us. Signs and wonders are going to break out. Miracles are going to happen and nobody will be able to stop them. It is
time for us to see our nation change. When we are divided in our mind and perception, then our strength as a church, as a nation, as leaders, are lost. Alone we are fighting a losing battle, but if we stand together and take hands as leaders of our churches and cities, we can become a strong and mighty force. God wants us to be a voice instead of a noise in our nation. There is still hope for our nation. The people of South Africa need hope and the church needs hope. Therefore Dunamis International Family Church will be hosting a Hope to the Nations Conference 1-5 July 2014. A dinner will be held for all church leaders and leaders of the surrounding cities of Germiston and Alberton - for those who want to join hands with us and take a stand to bring a change in our cities. This will take place on 1 July at 17h00 at 90 Piercy Avenue in Parkhill Gardens, Germiston. For more information about the conference and to RSVP for the dinner, please call Brigitte or Natashia before 25 June 2014 on 084 456 1587 and 082 946 92321.
“Reports that Gauteng Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, has called for a second look into e-Tolls is a significant development in the DA’s fight against South African National Roads Agency Ltd’s (Sanral) gangster gantries,” Manny de Freitas MP, DA Shadow Minister of Transport, said. “I will write to MEC Vadi and request a formal meeting with him to discuss the MEC’s change of heart,” de Freitas added. He said the DA will request that the Transport Portfolio Committee, at its first meeting, place e-tolls and Vadi’s proposed second look thereof on the agenda. “Vadi’s concession that no alternative
funding model was considered and that there is general dissatisfaction with the funding model confirms our calls and suspicions. It is also a refreshing break from the ANC’s tone-deaf party line on the issue. This matter needs to be brought before the committee as a matter of urgency. Before the elections, it was agreed that the committee should invite parties with alternative views on e-tolls, particularly organisations such as OUTA, to present them to the committee. With civil society, political parties, unions and now even members of the ANC and government calling for the reconsideration of e-tolls, it’s time the state listens and Parliament makes this a priority.”
Rethinking e-tolls
By Palesa Rats are not popular. In matters of the heart, those who prove unfaithful are called love rats; in the workplace, those who refuse to support a strike are called amagundwane (rats); and when we suspect someone is dishonest, we talk about “smelling a rat.” Every winter the South African media runs sensational stories about rats. There are reported sightings of new varieties of rats, articles about rats as big as cats, and even interviews about rats that stand up on their hind legs and challenge people instead of running away from them. Certainly, anyone who has looked into the cold blue eyes of one of these ugly, sharp-toothed rodents knows that they are not pleasant animals; and as the size of the road-kill rats on our streets can testify, it takes a car doing quite a few kilometres per hour to kill one of these monster Gauteng vermin. Tragically, however, cases have also been documented of rats biting babies, causing serious injury or even death. There are other dangers as well. Rats destroy food, gnaw through electric wires and spread tape-worms, typhus and gastro-enteritis. As Gauteng citizens know only too well, they are also prolific breeders - in the space of one year, two rats can multiply into 15 000 rodents that are strong and hardy enough to swim 800 metres in the ocean or tread water for three days. [www.dailymotion.com/.../xzqfcl_national-geograph...;www.terrierman.com/ aboutrats.htm] What is the solution? Rats are a formidable foe and the war has to be fought on many fronts. Citizens must take responsibility for their environment by making compost out of vegetable peels, by recycling paper, plastic and tin and by throwing away the rest responsibly. Municipalities must collect garbage regularly in all areas and schools must teach our children not to litter. Although cats and owls can be used very effectively to reduce rodent numbers, many people dislike them even more than rats. Fortunately, there is another simple home remedy that AT

involves neither poison nor bullets. For success, it requires a weekly programme run by seven neighbouring households, about five rat-traps and a supply of oats and peanut butter. Each family simply chooses one day of the week to take their turn to arrange the traps around their property and load them with oats and peanut butter - a meal that is apparently totally irresistible to rats – and eventually the war on rodents will be won.

Lest we forget Thursday 13 June 2014 was the fiftieth anniversary of the day seven political prisoners, including one Nelson Rolihlala Mandela, landed on Robben Island on a cold, wet winter’s day to begin their decades-long prison sentences. The Nelson Mandela Foundation Houghton marked the occasion with a ceremony by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth Leadership Programme held at their premises in Houghton. Since June is Youth Month in South Africa, pupils from various schools were invited to the event. Over tea and coffee, they mingled with journalists and studied the works of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist David Turnley displayed in the foyer. This photographic history of the “struggle” included pictures of a strikingly beautiful young Winnie Mandela, black South Africans being beaten by a white police-officer and the very symbolic picture of a white schoolboy lounging on a bench while two black women, who at the time were prohibited by law from sitting on that bench, walk past. There was also a terrifying aerial shot of a “sellout” about to be “necklaced” – a man with a tyre around his neck surrounded

by an angry crowd dragging him to a horrible, fiery death. The programme of the day included the reading of Madiba’s famous trial speech by Sello Maake KaNcube and a speech by Walter Sisulu’s grandson Shaka Sisulu. Mr Sisulu explained how his grandfather, Uncle Kathy (Ahmed Kathrada) and the other Rivonia triallists were tried because of their plans to sabotage government institutions. He described their relief at receiving lifesentences instead of being hanged, ascribing this to international pressure exerted on the apartheid government at the time. He urged the youth of 2014 to stand up for their beliefs, no matter what the cost. Then there was an opportunity to hear about conditions on the Island from former Robben Island in-mate Ahmed Kathrada. He described how prisoners were detained for 90 days with no visitors except police, who threatened them with death; how the single white Rivonia triallist was not sent to Robben Island but imprisoned elsewhere; how black prisoners wore short pants and the others were given long trousers; how he, as an Indian, received bread every morning, but Madiba had to wait ten years to be given his first slice of bread

in prison. Uncle Kathy also described how prisoners with education taught those without, despite enduring harsh prison conditions and working eight hours a day with a pick and
shovel; and encouraged today’s youth to make the most of the education they receive. The ANC may be a little too fond of its anniversaries, but this was one worth remembering.
From savings despair to dream holiday delight – R100 at a time Saving means different things to different people. But for most South Africans, the word still conjures up negative sentiments such as grudge, guilt and despair. That’s because savings automatically translates into a sense of self-deprivation. There seems to be a notion that one first has to give up a certain item of luxury or reward in order to
free up money to save. But this needn’t be the case, and saving can in fact become a part of your life, with minimal effort. How can you achieve this? … Suggests you either jot down your daily shopping purchases as you make them, or assess your bank statements at the end of the month. In this way you can best see where you’re spending your money. This exercise is likely to shock you when you see exactly how much you’re spending, and where your hard-earned money is going. While many consumers complain that they
Zuma’s speech too many promises, too little detail By Palesa President Zuma delivered his second State of the Nation Address this year the day after Youth Day, but said very little about the main problem facing the young people of this country: unemployment. His mention of the Youth Employment Accord and a vague promise to “prioritise” youth empowerment in “our economic transformation programme” will do little to pacify the Beret Brigade, and the Honourable Malema will certainly not lose a single minute of sleep over the Honourable Zuma’s commitment on the part of government to “investigate the possibility of a national minimum wage.” The President’s speech-writer did well, however, to begin with the subject of Marikana. In this regard, the plan to “revitalise mining towns” is long overdue. Had government tackled this burning issue in earnest before August 2012, it might have gone some way to averting the Marikana massacre and the crippling strikes that have followed it. Anyone who has visited the area will know that the riches underground hardly match the living conditions of miners who reside in
don’t have any money to spare at the end of the month, they will often easily spend money on non-essential items. A couple of Steers burgers in a month would set you back say R200, you’ll buy a new pair of shoes on sale for R200, you’ll pick up a quick take-away coffee on your way to work, and of course the latest CD by your favourite artist for R150 – and already you’ve spent around R600. So while we readily spoil ourselves, if we break down our purchases, it becomes much easier to find even just R100 extra a month. You can achieve a lot by saving R100 per month, calculations show that by putting away
R100 in a savings product at a realistic five percent interest rate, you’ll have saved R1 227 by the end of year one. That increases to R6 781 after five years, and R15 436 after ten years. A saving of R500 a month shows even better results: it grows to R6136in year one, R33 907 by year five and R77 182 by year 10. This shows you that you don’t have to put away a lot every month to save. By just cutting out small items, you can grow your savings substantially. shacks without services, or neglected townships with dirt roads and dilapidated houses. Nevertheless, a promise in Parliament is just that – it has still to be implemented. The Energy Security Cabinet Sub-committee, which seems to be government’s solution to load shedding, is also not likely to inspire confidence in the private sector, which may be forced to engage in job shedding if serious power outages make a habit of spoiling supermarkets’ frozen goods and stopping restaurants, hairdressers and other businesses from operating. Citizens’ confidence in government’s delivery to perform is not strong enough for them to accept that, if the President said it, it will happen. The President needs to spell out concrete, measurable, realistic implementation details with deadlines in order to restore the nation’s trust in government’s ability to do service delivery. Promises to revitalise local government, to fix Joburg’s billing system, to eradicate the bucket system, to increase university passes, to implement a reliable and caring National Health Insurance system, to deal with crime and corruption to the tune of R30bn a year have all been heard before from government. Although South African voters still support the ANC, we have service delivery protests in our country about every second day. Most citizens, therefore, would probably have preferred him to give us a plan of action on Tuesday rather than a list of promises.

Onele Daele (15), Sandile Nkutha (19), Martha Mabuza (14) and their fellow performers at Germiston High School won the Best Celebration of Heritage award.
By Charity Moyo Sunward Park High School won the Best Fresh award at the annual Performing Arts Festival held at Emperors Palace Theatre of Marcellus on Youth Day. This great triumph happened after the school had been on a losing streak for their championship title three seasons in a row. The school last won the overall championship title in 2011. The event was hosted by Peermont School Support Programme (PSSP), for the seven high school’s that benefit from the R40million Peermont initiative, namely; Lethulwazi Secondary School and Thuto Lesedi Secondary School from (Vosloorus), General Smuts High School (Vereeniging), Germiston High School (Germiston), Sunward Park High School (Boksburg), Tembisa Secondary School (Tembisa) and Unity Secondary School (Daveyton). Tembisa High School were the champions of the event, winning overall first position of the 2014 Performing Arts Festival. Lethulwazi Secondary School won the Best Script award.
Thuto Lesedi Secondary School also did not go home empty- handed but won the trophy for Best Theatre Production. Germiston High School won the Best Celebration of Heritage award. General Smuts High School walked away with the Best Stage Production award. Unity Secondary School won the Most Creative Production award. The festival aims to recognise and support excellence in the performing arts and to celebrate the talent that exists within the seven high schools supported by the PSSP. The theme of the event was “Born Free, Share your Dream”. The format provides each school 20 minutes to put on a show and was not limited to any genre. The festival had three objectives: to recognize passion where it exists, to encourage collaboration and to provide young performers with the opportunity to perform in a professional environment. In 2011 Sunward Park High School walked away with the top award, in 2012 General Smuts High School triumphed and an exhilarating performance by Unity Secondary School earned them first place in 2013.
Find music from Ayanda Jiya’s VIC Ep at SoundCloud (https://soundcloud.com/ tinismdotc0m/sets) or follow @ayandastandjiya for performance details. Klerksdorp-born songstress Ayanda Jiya (27) is a versatile entertainer who has had a burning desire for music from an early age. Currently working on her debut album titled ‘Ayandastand’ under the label TinismDotcom, Ayanda has introduced herself to the industry with the release of her extended play album (EP) titled Very Intimate Conversations. tame TIMES recently caught up with the singer-songwriter and got to know her a little better. (tT): When did you realise you have a musical talent and was it an easy decision for you to pursue a musical career? (AJ): I was 5 or 6 when it became evident that I had a musical talent and obviously I had to wait a bit longer before I could pursue my interest in music. I wanted to study first and needed to focus on other interests I had before doing the whole music thing professionally. I knew it was my passion and it had to be lived at some point in my life, so after studying I focused on my dream of music. (tT):Tell us about your influences - are there any musicians who have inspired your musical style? (AJ): Oh yes, I listen to a lot of genres mostly Gospel, Jazz, RnB and Soul. I’d like to believe that I have a very versatile ear for music. I spend time listening and trying to figure out how it was all put together. I find the whole process of putting a song together most intriguing, which is why I pay so much attention to detail with my own craft. My influences come from artists like Kim Burrell, Jazmine Sullivan, Ledisi, Lalah Hathaway, Gwen Bunn, Foreign Exchange, Alex Isley, but my list is endless. (tT): Why Very Intimate Conversations (VIC)? (AJ): Well, I wanted to introduce myself to my audience. I wanted them to get to know
me better from the word go, so VIC was to introduce me to them in a more intimate manner to share the life issues we all face as human beings. I just felt that sometimes people forget that artists are just as human as they are and that you as an artist are no different from them at all. (tT): How was your experience recording your debut album, who did you work with and did they make you feel comfortable? (AJ): Well, recording my EP was an awesome experience. I didn’t collaborate with anyone on my EP but I have worked on my co-artist Ginger BreadMan’s debut album (R.O.T.Y). That experience for me was an absolute delight and I loved it so much that we ended up doing more collaborations. We seem to be very comfortable with each other, so working together is easy. Besides working with Ginger there will be more collaborations in the near future that I would like to do. (tT): Aside from the launch of VIC, what have been the highlights of your music career? (AJ): Ooh when I was an opening act for The Muffinz at Yamaha World, I had so much fun, the crowd was awesome, their energy was inviting, I was so comfortable! I did my thing and they loved it and I loved it more - that was one fantastic highlight of my career. (tT): Give us your local favourites - which artists are a common feature on your playlist? (AJ): Right now on my playlist you will find: Simphiwe Dana, Jimmy Dludlu, Themba Mkhize, and Kabomo. (tT): As someone who knows nothing about Ayanda, what can I expect from VIC? (AJ): Expect something never really done in South African music; expect quality on a different scale - music with great content and yet a pleasure to listen to!

number of requests to start a club here. In the past I was reluctant to go ahead with the project as I believed that there were other clubs in the area that should be supported. However, it has become evident that few of these clubs cater for mountain biking, and there are no clubs that provide for beginners,” he explained. There are two distinct categories to the club, namely mountain biking and trail running; however, Bole stressed that members will not be restricted to these two disciplines. “The mountain bikers will be participating in road racing as well as track cycling, and the athletes will also take part in road and track races. We are hoping the different disciplines will support each other."
Members of the club will also enjoy numerous perks, including discounts at nearby cycle shop, The Cycle Hub and special annual Club access fees to Thaba Trails and the Rietvlei Cycle Park. Members will also enjoy discounted insurance prices from the club’s insurance broker, Cyclesure and be encouraged to join Helivac Medical Emergency services at greatly reduced club prices. Bole noted that the Thaba Trails Club will cater for mountain bikers and trail runners of different abilities. “There will be race snakes aiming for Provincial and National Honours, but there will also be races for those who want to take part for personal reasons. We will encourage everyone to reach their own goals,” he concludes. For more information on the Thaba Trails Club contact Wendell Bole at bole@icon.co.za. Twitter: @thabatrails. Fletcher and Gorlei take SA to AACT lead *Written and released by Lali Stander on behalf of Womens Golf South Africa. Michaela Fletcher and Cara Gorlei strengthened South Africa’s title defence bid at the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) in Kenya on Wednesday 11 June, when the pair combined for a team total of 148 in the second round. The South African team lagged one shot behind Kenya after an opening round of 146, however Fletcher’s 73 and a 75 from Gorlei handed the defending champions an eight-shot lead over the host nation at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi. South Africa tops the standings on 10-overpar 294, with Kenya second on 302 after recording a 157. Tanzania moved into third on 306 after a second round 150. Fletcher picked up a birdie at the par-five ninth to turn in one under, but the KwaZuluNatal golfer bogeyed the 10th, 12th and 14th on the homeward stretch of the challenging layout. Gorlei from Western Province had two double bogeys, two drops and three birdies on her way to 75, but the 17-year-old Milnerton golfer still tops the Individual Leaderboard on one-over-par 145. Gorlei is three shots ahead of second round playing partner, Josephine Ainley from Kenya, who returned a second round 76. Fletcher and compatriot Magda Kruger, who posted a non-counting 76, are tied for third on 152.
