Benoni’s beauty queen
GO BENONI: Shane Naidoo, from Farrarmere, Benoni is a finalist in this year’s Miss South Africa competition. MISS SOUTH AFRICA 2015: Will the crown go to a Benoni local this year? You be the judge. Benoni, which already has its fair share of celebrities, is now adding Farrarmere’s Shane Naidoo to its golden girl list, as the 22-year-old beauty is one of the finalists in this year’s Miss South Africa competition. Here are some Q&A’s so that you, our readers, can get to know our local Miss SA hopeful: Occupation: I am a third-year student studying towards a degree in Industrial Engineering at Wits. I am studying engineering because I enjoy the challenge that the course presents. Industrial engineering is the perfect combination of engineering and the business field. The industrial engineering environment allows me to be creative and innovative, while still applying logic and working with numbers.
It’s a field that focuses on optimizing and improving, which is something that speaks to me on so many different levels, as the knowledge obtained from this programme can be applied to a multitude of different areas in my life. Why do you want to be Miss South Africa and what do you think you will be able to bring to the role? Entering Miss South Africa means fulfilling a lifelong dream and embarking on a journey of self-discovery. I am confident that I will be a worthy leader and an ambassador for our country. I believe that I possess the strength, determination and confidence to represent our country on a national and international level. I have
passion and compassion, and believe that our people are our greatest asset. I aim to combine my personal goals and strengths with those of the Miss South Africa organization to make a positive social impact on our society by means of engaging with our people and emphasizing their strengths. I want to be a role model to young women across the country and an ambassador for women’s empowerment. What is your message to young girls and young women in South Africa? If you can dream it, you can achieve it. Nothing comes easily, so if you want great things in your life you have to work hard in order to reap the benefits. South Africa has so much potential
for growth, and being part of such a dynamic generation allows for endless opportunities. We are the future leaders - so make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. Embrace your feminism and be a go-getter! Anything else you would like to add? Through this journey, I would like to accomplish many goals that I have set for myself. Thus far I have been involved with small-scale charity events and projects. I would like to be more involved on a larger scale with charity events and being able to give back. The Miss South Africa platform will allow me to fulfil those goals and achieve big things. For more info visit www.misssa.co.za

Harvesting your stem cells - what’s your take? The latest buzz word for those of us into alternative health is “stem cells.” Having our first grandchild on his way, we have read a great deal about the value of preserving the placenta and even the umbilical cord of the newborn so that stem cells can be harvested from them for treatment of any future illnesses or

suffering from a shoulder injury and I had severe foot cramping episodes so bad that I had to abandon a cycle race in December On Saturday 17 January we went to visit the South African Stem Cell Institute (SASCI) at the Regenerative Medical Centre in Parys, Free State. Under local anaesthetic, we gladly donated some of our stomach fat. In a very modern and efficient FDA- and GMP-aligned laboratory, on the same premises, a drip was prepared for both of us from our own stem cells. Brian also donated some of his blood to prepare a new regenerative cell-based therapy called PRP or platelet-rich-plasma. This was meticulously prepared by the cell biologist on site and injected back into his injured shoulder. Within minutes of receiving the drip I had a warm tingling sensation in my feet – and, yes – believe it or not – all the cramps, stiffness and pain in my foot disappeared. Brian, who hurt his finger in his latest cycling accident, had the same sensation in his finger and yes, it is now no longer stiff and tender. As for me, I feel so energized – those of you having Strava can follow me, and see that since Monday I have broken all my records on my usual route! We know that all has not been proven by research yet, and stem cell therapy is still in its experimental phases, mostly because the big pharmaceutical companies are scared to lose out on the chemicalbased medicine profits - but we are keen to try out new things and this experience did not disappoint us. Our stem cells are now preserved in a state-ofthe-art facility and we can use them at any stage and for whatever reason we need them in future.

First 2015 EFC fight at Carnival City
Nail-biting action awaits EFC fans on Saturday 21 February when the final reckoning takes place between lightweight champion Leon “Iron Lion” Mynhardt and former champion Don “Magic Man” Madge at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena. They have fought twice before, and on both occasions a controversial win was given to Mynhardt. This time Madge promises to win with a finish. EFC 37 includes seven actionpacked preliminary bouts, as well as the first ever bout in the EFC Women’s Division. Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated bouts of EFC 37 is the welterweight bout in which grappling phenomenon and current two-time EFC welterweight champion, Adam
Speechly, will defend his title against striking specialist David Buirski. In this, the first EFC fight night for 2015, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) megastar Darren Daniel also returns to the Hexagon to clash with hometown favorite JP Kruger, while Madiba faces M. Buirski. Gorimbo and Cheboub top off the main card at EFC 37. ‘We are thrilled to play host to the first EFC fight night of 2015. The question we understand that is on everybody’s lips is ‘will this be the night that the welterweight curse will be broken?’’ Do not miss EFC37 in February to find out,” says Michelle Smith, the Marketing Manager at Carnival City. EFC, the Extreme Fighting Championship, is the biggest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization on
the African continent. Over 100 of the world’s toughest MMA athletes are exclusively contracted to EFC to showcase their skills in front of thousands of fans in sold out arenas. With 10 new events per year, each hosting at least 12 explosive bouts, EFC is a sports entertainment phenomenon which has captured the attention of passionate and loyal fans throughout Africa and the world. The doors to Carnival City’s Big Top Arena open at 16h15, with the
preliminary bouts kicking off at 16h45. The main card bouts start at 20h00. Tickets range in price, starting at R225 per person. The ticket cost includes an Event Guide, Fight Card and information valued at R50. VIP ticketholders enjoy access to the VIP Bars and Smoking Lounge.
NEW coaches for Spar Protea Netball team NETBALL COACH: Benny Saayman has been appointed as Head Coach of the SPAR Protea Netball team following former coach Elize Kotze’s resignation as head coach.
Netball South Africa (NSA) announced on 13 January the appointment of Benny Saayman as Head Coach of the SPAR Protea team. She will be assisted by Dr Elsje Jordaan and Martha Mosoahle. Their appointment is with effect from 1 February 2015 until 31 August 2015. They replace Elize Kotze, who resigned as head coach last week for personal reasons. “We are confident that Ms Saayman would be able to guide the team to a successful Netball World Championships (WNC),” said NSA President Mimi Mthethwa. “She is a mature coach who has been on the same platform before, and during her tenure the team was ranked fifth in the world. Ms Saayman was the coach for the Western Stings, the NPL that won the second division of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup last year. Her trademark is playing basic netball. It would be important for our team to go back to playing basic netball where all the skills they have acquired in the last three years under the former coach would come in handy to support and strengthen their play. “We had a frank discussion with Ms Saayman to ensure that she and her assistants work as a team. We are happy with how she sees
their roles as individual coaches. She was given the opportunity to suggest who she thinks would add value to her game plan she identified the two assistants.” “I am confident Dr Jordaan would contribute a lot towards the attack aspect of the game while Martha Mosoahle is very good in midcourt and would be instrumental in improving this area of the game,” said Saayman. “I will guide and nurture both the assistant coaches. Elsje (Jordaan) played under me when I was national coach. I know her as a player and I can also say she is currently the best game analyst we have in South Africa. She and Martha both captained the SPAR Proteas during their playing days. I will also work hard to build the team to understand that we are family. I would like our team to play basic, fast netball.” South Africa is drawn along Malawi, Singapore and Sri Lanka in Pool C (INF has indicated that this could change). Although this may look like an easy pool, it would be bad for the team to take these teams lightly. Regardless of where the team ends in the pool, if they are in position one or two they are guaranteed to meet either Australia or New Zealand in the next stage of the competition.
