AT BOKSBURG CIVIC CENTRE: Learners from local schools attended the World Book Day event on 23 April. World Book and Copyright Day (also known as International Day of the Book or World Book Day) is a yearly event celebrated on 23 April, initiated by UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebration of Saint George’s Day. In 1995 UNESCO decided that World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare. This year the theme of World Book Day celebrations in South Africa is “Come read with me.” The World Book Day (WBD) national celebrations in South Africa are coordinated by the Centre for the Book, an Outreach Unit of the National Library of South Africa, mandated to promote a culture of reading, writing and publishing in all local languages and easy access to books for all. The WBD celebrations started off with a Door to Door Reading
Campaign on 22 April at Greenspark settlement in Fochville and were led by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Arts ERROL FROM SEWENDE LAAN: and Culture, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi. poses with a young learner at the The Door to Door Reading Campaign is an outreach programme World Book Day event in Boksburg. to raise awareness about reading and to promote easy access to books. No consultation with the poor on housing
Led by the local ANC, a group of hostel-dwellers from the Blue Sky Hostel in Cinderella and homeless Boksburg residents, on Thursday 23 April marched to the Boksburg Town Council offices to protest the exclusion of the poor from housing development projects of the Council and the lack of communication
and consultation by their ward councillor. Among the demands from the protesters is the matter of bond houses being built around Cinderella up to Windmill Park and Dawn Park. They fear that they will eventually be evicted from the Blue Sky Hostel to make way for the development of high-cost bond houses to be constructed.
They are irate because their ward councillor, Clr Johan Hendricks, never consulted them through any public participation process about the developments that will eventually see their current accommodation demolished, and them displaced and possibly homeless. But according to Clr Johan Hendricks, he was informed by his political party seniors (DA) not to call a public meeting on the matter of the housing development projects, as it is a Department of Human Settlement’s project and they should give answers on the matter and consult with the community. He said that he “feels sorry for these people,” but that he couldn’t consult with them on an issue that he had no control over, because he could not make any commitments on behalf of the Department of Human Settlements and the Boksburg Town Council.
Some other demands on the memorandum included: • A housing plan to accommodate the poor communities, black and white. • A plan to save businesses that are leaving the CBD in their numbers. • A strategy to fight crime and selling of drugs in our city. • Continuous updates on IDP projects to be started in the ward and that all these projects must have community participation as the majority is unemployed. • Action to demolish unused vacant buildings as they have become havens for criminals. Clr Hendricks was given seven days to respond to their demands. He said that he will consult with the relevant departments on the matter and hopes to be in a position to deliver proper feedback by then, because seven days is a short time to resolve this matter.
Colour-blind hunger Note from the editor ...
SOMETHING TO EAT AT LAST: Street kids in Boksburg share a hard-won meal. I once had a debate with someone about a campaign that gained such momentum that, from big business to ordinary citizens, millions were ploughed into it. All I will say is that this campaign was not to change the lives of the millions of hungry, poor and unemployed people in this country. When my opponent found herself with her back against the wall, she attacked me with the Bible, saying, “Even Jesus said that the poor will always be with you.” I desisted from continuing with the debate because I realised it would lead to conflict. But her words stuck in my head and I was actually quite disgusted by the misinterpretation of the Bible scripture she quoted. Now I am no student of religious studies and will never claim to be an expert in any holy scripture, but, going back and reading the piece she quoted, I realised that people will often use any means to justify their lack of involvement
in programmes to help the poor. My interpretation of the words of Jesus was that He addressed the pretentious attack of Judas on the woman who used the expensive oil on Jesus, because Judas’s concern was not truly with the poor - he only used the plight of the poor to try to convince the woman to fill the purse he (Judas) was keeping. Jesus therefore attacked the greed of individuals that will be a stumbling block for others to escape poverty. When I noticed the young beggars in the picture sharing a plate of food that the one was given, I was saddened, but also had hope that we as a society can learn from this colour-blind sharing and reach a point where we stop seeing colour and creed and rid ourselves of our selfish greed, and realise that hunger is colour-blind and non-sexist, and hopefully share and care more.

Improving the standards of Dawn Park schools
Completion of an assembly, the fixing of a recycling station and many other repairs of the school building are some of the improvements that will be made at eight Dawn Park schools that won the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. At the Cashbuild Dawn Park Store Opening Ceremony held on 17 April 2015, each school received a Cashbuild building materials voucher worth R15 000. Rondebult, Igagasi and Thulasizwe Primary Schools are just three of the eight lucky schools that will receive a facelift. Rondebult Primary School’s principal, N M Kenyana, said that in thanking Cashbuild, they were over the moon and that this came at the right time for the school. Igagasi Primary School’s principal, B S Msibi, also added that they are very excited to be able to improve their school and that they believe
this is the beginning of a new partnership with Cashbuild. At the official Cashbuild Dawn Park Store Opening Ceremony held on 17 April, the learners entertained everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances while Cashbuild building material vouchers totaling R120 000 were presented to all eight schools. The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and then remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next five years. Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place

WHEELIE BINS ROLLED Xenophobia drive OUT NORTH OF N17 FETCH YOUR BIN BEFORE 1 MAY
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is in the process of replacing the plastic black bag refuse removal system throughout the region with the 240-litre wheelie bin system. From 1 May 2015, the old black bag system will be phased out in areas north of the N17 in Boksburg. The wheelie bins, according to the Metro, “are supplied free of charge to residents, but will be levied individually as per the promulgated Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Waste Management Services tariff schedule.”
WHAT TO REMEMBER ON RUBBISH DAY:
CARING: Peggy (middle) and the organisers of the drive, Dimakatso Malatsi - chairperson of Benjemijn - and Lauren Murphy. Benjemijn Ladies Residence, from the University of Johannesburg, organised a drive to collect donations to aid the victims of xenophobia. The drive ran from 20 to 23 April on the university’s Auckland Park Kingsway campus. In total, R2900 in cash donations and three trolley-loads of donations of food, clothing and blankets were received from the generous staff and students of the university. The money has been used to purchase urgently needed toiletries, such as sanitary pads and toothbrushes. More donations are expected to arrive next week. The donations are being distributed to the victims of xenophobia residing in refugee camps in the Germiston area.
