he 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan for Gauteng forecasts that by 2037, or thereabouts, the vehicle population of Gauteng is projected to increase from 3,5 million to 6,5 million. Consequently, Gauteng roadusers during morning peak hours could increase from the current 2.2 million to 3.8 million by 2037. It is with this reality in mind that Vadi addressed participants at the summit.
According to Vadi, Gauteng’s freight plan (how goods are transported, imported and exported) needs a strong supporting road network in order for the economy to prosper in spite of the increasing motorist population and product transport demands. “An efficient transportation system is a critical element for sustainable economic development.

concern. It leads to a loss in productivity owing to longer travel times and increased fuel consumption,” Vadi said. Apart from the influence of freight on the province’s economy, the safety of motorists on the roads is another crucial factor that was discussed at the summit. Vadi referred to the tragic horror crash on the N12 Voortrekker Road in Alberton recently, where a truck plunged into 48 vehicles and killed four people. Barely three days later there was another crash on the N12 involving two trucks. According to Vadi, the Department is determined to create safer roads. However, due to the impact of freight on our economy, the intervention cannot be one-sided. Overloading of freight vehicles is another issue that the Department aims to curb. Many drivers avoid strategies of law enforcement, such as weigh bridges,
and take alternative routes. Vadi calls on the freight sector to stick to the Keep Left Pass Right rule; to comply with the speed limit and to adhere to load restrictions, as negligence on the road, in the end, impacts our economy negatively. One way in which the Department aims to create safer and more efficient freight transportation, is via the development of the Durban-Gauteng freight corridor by 2030, which should alleviate freight congestion on public roads.

Earlier this year Eskom launched its Save a Future Leader campaign, which was introduced with the aim of protecting children in rural areas from dangerous illegal connections. The Tsakane project formed part of the implementation process of this campaign, and it is the first physical step towards eradicating illegal connections. According to Nzimande, “The danger of these illegal connections is that little children may be hurt or killed, and many have been in different areas, so we trying our best to eliminate this problem. This partnership will continue until there are no illegal connections. We plead with the communities throughout Gauteng to please report even when they suspect that there are illegal connections, we will come and we will remove,” Nzimande advised. Eskom, the Ekurhuleni Municipality and the EMPD will visit neighbouring areas in Gauteng soon to look for further illegal connections.

SAPS members from the Vereeniging Flying Squad arrested five suspects after being called to the scene of an armed robbery in the early hours of Sunday 19 October. They arrived at the corner of Fourteenth Avenue and Cason Roads in Boksburg North shortly before 02:00 to find a silver Renault with five occupants. One of them pointed a firearm at the officers and, while they were trying to apprehend him, he was wounded in the lower body. All five suspects were arrested and a licensed firearm was recovered. The wounded suspect was taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police recently arrested a Zimbabwean national for selling dagga in the area around the Hyperama and McDonalds near Rondebult Road in Boksburg. After observing the man meeting several people and exchanging items with them, EMPD Germiston Crime Prevention Unit members approached him and found him to be in possession of drugs. They confiscated 34
small packets of dagga rolled in foil paper and valued at around R350. The 35-year-old man was charged with possessing and dealing in dagga at Boksburg Central Police Station and is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
Two men who were found in a suspected stolen vehicle with cellphones, Indonesian currency and a handbag were recently arrested while trying to flee. Freeway officers on routine patrol along the R24 eastbound just after the Barbara Road turnoff noticed a suspicious-looking white Nissan Navara with three occupants at around 06h45 on Monday 13 October. When they approached the vehicle, the Navara screeched to a halt and three men jumped out and bolted on foot. Two of the men were apprehended and one managed to evade arrest.
Police are looking for witnesses to a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred on Pretoria Road south near the ERPM Golf-Course in Boksburg West on 7 October at about 15:05. A motor vehicle collided with a tree and the driver sustained fatal injuries. There was a bystander on the scene who left before the attending Metro Police Officer could record his particulars. Any person who witnessed the incident should please contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Manie du Preez, on 011 306 0000 using reference: Boksburg North CAS 128/10/2014.
On Wednesday 15 October at around 15:30, a motorist from Buhle Park was shot dead on the N17 westbound near the Alberton bridge. The driver was in his Nissan LDV with a passenger when he picked up two men near the Alberton bridge. The hitch-hikers allegedly shot the driver in the forehead, fatally wounding him, but left the passenger unharmed. Apparently in an attempt to speed away, the driver crashed the vehicle into the freeway barriers. The two suspects fled the scene and are still at large. It is suspected that the perpetrators came from the nearby informal settlement, as there is a footpath from it to the N17 freeway. The passenger informed the police that the two men hitch-hikers had claimed they were on their way to Johannesburg. Motorists are warned to be vigilant if their vehicles break down in and around that location. Additionally, motorists are reminded that stopping on the freeway is an offence and very dangerous, unless such action is beyond the driver’s control.
The two suspects failed to convince the officers of their ownership of the vehicle and could not provide satisfactory answers about a woman’s handbag containing R400 cash, as well as Indonesian currency estimated to be worth R20 000 in rands. Four cellphones were also found in the vehicle. The duo, both in their late twenties and residents of Hillbrow, were charged at Bedfordview Police Station with being in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, possession of huge amounts of foreign
The hunt is still on for two suspected hitmen who ditched a firearm at Windmill Park taxi rank on Thursday 16 October.
While on an early morning patrol around the volatile Windmill Park Taxi Rank, EMPD Public Order Policing members noticed two suspicious-looking men in denims and duster coats. When the Metro Police officers made a U-turn to approach them, the two men showed the police a clean pair of heels and in the process dropped a 9mm compact pistol. The recovered firearm has been booked in at Dawn Park Police Station. Several concrete leads are being followed by the police in an effort to apprehend the two suspects.
Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot in the Zaya section of Vosloorus on Sunday 26 October. The soccer player was tragically declared dead upon his arrival at hospital. Seven people were reportedly in the house of Senzo Meyiwa’s girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at around 20:00 when two suspects entered the house while another waited outside. During an exchange in which robbers ordered Meyiwa to give them his phone, he was shot and killed. All three suspects fled the scene. The police have offered a R150 000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza said: “This is a sad loss whichever way you look at it - for Senzo’s family, his extended family, Orlando Pirates and for the nation.”

Ekurhuleni junior golfer Liam van Deventer recently had reason to celebrate twice after scoring a playoff victory in the prestigious Nomads SA Boys u/13 Championship, helping his team to win the Team Competition at the same tournament.
Van Deventer, a Grade 6 learner from St Catherine’s and a member of Germiston Golf Club coached by Robbie Stewart, was two off the pace from Southern Cape’s Jordan Duminy at the start of the final round, but the Germiston young gun reeled in four birdies to offset three dropped shots for a one-under-par 71 to set the clubhouse target at a four-over-par 221. WP flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis was named Man of the Match for his exceptional goal-kicking, which gave the champions the edge on the scoreboard.
