Glass artists
The Crucible, a centre of creativity offering glass blowing facilities, held their last open day of the year at the end of November. The centre is open to the public on the last day of every month, except December, as part of the Benoni Art Route. “The Crucible will continue to be a participant of the Art Route during 2015, providing the opportunity for people not only to watch our glass blowing artists at work, but to find out more about this ancient art form which has hardly changed for thousands of years,” said The Crucible owner and glass artist Greg Miller. The Crucible provides people with the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with glass, by offering classes and workshops for both young and old. At the open day, visitors took up the opportunity to get involved by blowing a glass bubble and sculpting a rose. For more information on The Crucible, visit their website at www.thecrucible.co.za.
IN DIE
SUBURBS Vrugtekoek, en ander tradisionele wapens
Jy weet dis weer daardie tyd van die jaar as jy by die supermark instap en Boney-M sing een of ander kersliedjie en die winkel is in helder groen en rooi getooi. Sekere kersfees-gebruike kan maar bly. Soos Boney-M.
Be grateful for what you have
Over the past two weeks I have realis ed just how grateful we have to be for what we have after my husband, Stephan, died of a heart attack at the age of 32. This has left me widowed, my two-yearold daughter without her father, my in-laws without a son and a brother, and my family without the bright light he brought into their lives. But, despite the tragedy of it all, we are lucky. We had him for many wonderful years, and, when he was gone, we had each other to lean on. I was at a function at Carnival City last week where orphaned children from all over the East Rand were given a day of fun. Looking at those children who are growing up in orphanages without a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle to look out for them, I was grateful that my little girl had only lost her father, but still had a large family to look out for her. Unlike these children, she will be taken care of by not only me, but four grandparents, three uncles, three aunts and a group of friends who all loved her dad like he was a brother, and who love her to distraction. Although she has lost her father and will never get to know him for herself, she is still a lucky girl. This festive season, count your blessings. You may not have the best clothes, the best gadgets, the best car, and you may not receive the most expensive gifts this Christmas; but if you have family or friends who love you and care for you, then you have more than most. And that is the greatest gift of all.

Maak skoon, metro
Hoekom hy leeg staan weet nugter. Sandra

Interesting facts about Christmas
Japanese people traditionally eat KFC for Christmas dinner, thanks to a successful marketing campaign 40 years ago. KFC is so popular that customers must place their Christmas orders 2 months in advance.
2
We frequently abbreviate “Christmas” to “Xmas” because of ancient tradition. X is the Greek letter “chi” which is an abbreviation for the word “Christ” in Greek.
3
The Nazi party tried to turn Christmas into a nonreligious holiday celebrating the coming of Hitler, with Saint Nicholas replaced by Odin the “Solstice Man” and swastikas on top of Christmas trees.
During the Christmas of 2010, the Colombian government covered jungle trees with lights. When FARC guerrillas (terrorists) walked by, the trees lit up and banners asking them to lay down their arms became visible. 331 guerrillas re-entered society and the campaign won an award for strategic marketing excellence.

Nearly all of the most popular Christmas songs including “Winter Wonderland”, “Chestnuts roasting ... ”, and “I’m Dreaming of a white Christmas” were written by Jews.

Last week Carnival City and the Afrisun East Rand Community Trust spread festive love and cheer among young children from underprivileged communities in Ekurhuleni. Some 350 children, aged between six and 12 years old, from various East Rand based orphanages were treated to a grand-scale Christmas party on the soccer fields behind the Carnival City complex. The field was transformed into a fantasy waterworld complete with boat rides, castles, a foam pit and a water slide. There were also other outdoor games and entertainment, including face painting and interactions with visiting clowns. A couple of celebrities, including the King of Kwaito, Anaconda, dropped in throughout the day to surprise the children. But the highlight
of the day was undoubtedly the visit by Santa and Mrs Claus, who came bringing gifts. According to Carnival City’s Godfrey Madonsela, this was the 8th annual Christmas party that Afrisun East Rand Trust and Carnival City have hosted for orphaned children in Ekurhuleni. “It is a great privilege for us to partner with the Afrisun East Rand Trust to host a Christmas party for young orphaned and neglected children from local communities. It gives these young children a chance to feel the love, joy and merriment that should surround them at this time of year. “For many of them, the gift they receive at our party is the only one they will get this Christmas. It is tremendously heartening to see them playing carefree and their faces light up when Father Christmas arrives. Carnival City is enormously appreciative of the support and sponsorships that help make the event possible,” said Madonsela.

Caring for a
terminally ill child Lizeth Kotze
lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za
Lizeth Kotze lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za The benefits of becoming an organ donor go beyond saving lives. One organ donor can save up to seven lives and improve the lives of 50 more. In South Africa, there are 4 300 adults and children waiting for a transplant at any given time, but the harsh reality is that fewer than 600 transplants actually occur every year. Reasons to become a donor By becoming a donor you have the opportunity to: • give someone a second chance at life • improve a sick person’s quality of life • spare them the time and effort of costly routine treatments • make someone’s life pain-free • restore normality to an illness-dominated lifestyle • give mobility back Knowing that your life saved or improved the lives of others could also bring comfort to your own grieving family. Who can donate? The answer is simple: anyone. Having a medical condition does not necessarily prevent you from becoming a donor. If, for example, you have cancer in a specific organ, it simply means you cannot donate that organ. The only conditions that prevent organ donation are HIV and death by injury
when your organs are severely damaged. Which organs can be donated? • Cornea • Skin • Heart valves • Tendons • All the organs and tissues shown in the diagram below
For more information on becoming an organ donor contact: Organ Donor Foundation Toll-free: 0800 22 66 11 www.odf.org.za
Lizeth Kotze lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za While one unit of blood can save up to three lives, only one in a hundred eligible South Africans are regular blood donors. In order to meet the demand for blood in South Africa, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) must collect an average of 3 000 units of blood per day. A donor can donate blood every 56 days, but because blood lasts only 42 days after donation, regular donors are essential for sustainability. To be a safe blood donor persons must: • weigh at least 50kg • be between the ages of 16 and 65 • be in good health • lead a sexually safe lifestyle How your blood is used: • 27% of donated blood goes towards medical cases (e.g. cancer treatment) • 26% is used for childbirth and gynaecological cases • 21% is used for surgical cases • 10% goes towards paediatric cases (e.g. leukaemia) • 6% is used in orthopaedic cases • 6% goes towards research • 4% is used for casualty (e.g. trauma patients)
Hopes, dreams, growing up to become fully functional adults, a life-time filled with happiness - these are the wishes any parent has for his or her child, so finding out that your child is terminally ill is life-shattering. Having a child with a life-shortening illness is overwhelming and emotionally draining. The impact on the family as a whole is enormous. It affects the family’s daily routine and just maintaining a “normal” family life becomes increasingly difficult, not to mention the financial impact the treatment might have. The reality is that no one can take away your pain and grief, but trying to handle the situation to the best of your ability will be the most important thing you can do as a parent.
Tips for parents with a terminally ill child: • Keep your child as comfortable as possible. • Gather information from your health team on how your child’s needs may change so that you know what to expect. • Maintain a high quality of life as far as the illness will allow. • Encourage your child to continue to set goals for himself, since it gives him meaning and a sense of achievement. • Where possible, allow him privacy and independence. • Allow your child to discuss his fears and to ask questions. •If you have more than one child, inform the others about the illness and let them help take care of their sick sibling. • Spend time with all your children and do not always focus on the illness. • As difficult as it may be, practise normal parenting. Without limits, your sick child may feel out of control. • Stand together as a family and seek support for all involved. • Be honest about your own fears and pain. • Have those difficult conversations about death and dying. It could be of some comfort knowing that you gave your child the send-off they wanted. Take it day by day. Do not stress about tomorrow, or you will lose today.
10 Reasons to donate blood: • Donating blood saves lives. • It is a good way to give back to your community. • The act of giving is selfless. • You receive a free mini-physical. • Every two seconds someone needs blood. • The blood supply needs constant replenishment. • One pint can help up to three people. • Most people are eligible to donate blood. • There is no substitute for human blood. • You will have someone’s undying gratitude.

A solution to overcrowded hospitals Natasha Kotze
natasha.kotze@tametimes.co.za
HEALING HEALTHCARE: iKhambi Care Group of Companies Communications and Marketing Director Brinny Mphogo and CEO Mike van Wyk in front of their head office in Boksburg. There is a growing demand for private sector intervention into the primary healthcare system in South Africa. “We are witnessing, on a daily basis, the increasing demand for primary healthcare within South Africa. Unfortunately, it seems the demand is growing at a faster rate than the government can keep abreast of. There is a rising amount of criticism around the delivery of healthcare as a result of this demand,” says Brinny Mphogo, communications and marketing director of iKhambi Care Group of Companies. Earlier this month, president Jacob Zuma gave an indication of what the ideal clinic should be: one that is staffed by healthcare providers who treat people with dignity and observe the Batho Pele principles of access, consultation, courtesy, information, service standards, openness and transparency, redress and value for money. “Our state hospitals are backlogged and struggling to stay abreast, not because the staff is ill trained or unproductive, but because
they are inundated with day-to-day healthcare issues which should be dealt with by a primary healthcare provider,” says Mphogo. iKhambi Care is a primary healthcare provider which looks to assist government by attracting patients and thus reducing overcrowding at hospitals. CEO Mike van Wyk says, “the service we offer will relieve hospitals of their primary healthcare volumes and allow them to focus on their primary mandate, which is to save lives. Our facilities offer turnaround times of no more than 20 minutes per patient from the time they walk through the door to the time they walk out.” He added, “We are confident that this is the solution and invite anyone to come and view our facilities, unannounced, because we are who we are and our service offering remains uncompromised.” The iKhambi Care head office is based in Boksburg at Park Place East, 103 North Rand Road; however, they boast a nationwide distribution of primary healthcare clinic facilities.

I dream of China Food review
SHWEET: China Dream’s Sweet & Sour Chicken is succulent and sweet.
Restaurant: China Dream Cuisine: Chinese Reviewed by: Natasha Kotze Rating: A real treat I’ve only ever had Chinese food that I really liked, and that was about 10 years ago while living in Pretoria. So my taste buds and stomach were grateful when we tasted what China Dream has to offer. First trying the Chicken Springrolls, tame TIMES sales rep Christell Steyn (who admitted to disliking Chinese food) and I were pleased to find the springrolls fresh and tasty. Unlike many other “Chinese” restaurants which have oily springrolls with sad-looking veggies, China Dream’s were crispy, but not oily, and the veggies were fresh and tasty. Next up we were served Beijing Duck which is a wrap you fill with pieces of duck, sprigs of onion, julienne cucumber and a soya-based sauce. After tasting this, Christell was converted and realized that what she had tasted before and believed to
be Chinese food, was not the real McCoy. For our main course we shared Beef Chop Suey and Sweet and Sour Chicken with egg fried rice. Both were delicious, but the Sweet and Sour Chicken was the best I’d ever tasted… by far! In between grabbing delicious bites to eat, Jackie Li told us that his dream was not just to feed South Africans. His dream is to show people the Chinese culture. “I want to provide traditional Chinese food and deliver the Chinese culture to South Africans,” he said. He wants China Dream to be the best Chinese restaurant in the East Rand, and he plans to build a franchise so that all of South Africa can get a true taste of China. YUM: The Chicken Springroll, like most everything on the China Dream menu, is cooked to perfection.

The names of Grade 12 learners who pass Matric will not be published in the newspapers when the Matric results are released. This was revealed at the final Council of Education Ministers (CEM) meeting, which was held in Pretoria last week. “The Ministers resolved that the results for this year would still be published in newspapers… but will only reflect the learners’ ID and exam numbers,” Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said. The CEM, which discusses critical matters affecting the education sector, comprises Minister Angie Motshekga, Deputy Minister Enver Surty and all provincial MECs. Mhlanga said the CEM had taken the decision to review the publishing of individual Grade 12 learners’ results following a recommendation of a task team. The meeting also discussed the implementation of recommendations contained in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Ministerial Task Team report. “CEM agreed that raising the pass mark for the NSC must be considered as part of improving the quality of education in South Africa. It was agreed that this should be done incrementally,” Mhlanga said. He said the integrated National Strategy for Learner Attainment Framework (NSLA) had been revised for General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Trading (FET) for 2015 in a bid to

If your child has outgrown his or her school shoes or school clothes, please donate them to this worthy cause and help to make school life a little easier for children in need. Your thoughtfulness could help give a child a future he or she might not otherwise have had.
Shoes can be dropped off at the Greater Boksburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 236 Rondebult Road, Libradene/ Farrar Park, Boksburg. For their office hours, contact the Chamber on 011 892 0222. Golfer killed by crocodile in South Africa’s Lake Panic
Three-month-old baby Thabang Maponya was reunited with his family after being kidnapped last Monday. By Friday, the suspect, who had befriended Thabang's mother Boitumelo while she was expecting him, had not yet been arrested. On Monday, the woman, known as Agnes, offered to take them out for a treat. However, she disappeared with the baby after saying she was going to buy food at a takeaway outlet in Jo’burg. Lieutenant-Colonel Khensani Magoai said the police had taken statements from witnesses who helped reunite Thabang with his family. Boitumelo was overjoyed to see her son after three days of agonising about his safety and whereabouts. His grandmother, Maria, said she was happy to be able to spend Christmas with her grandson. The beggar with bulging pockets
A crocodile has killed a man while he was retrieving golf balls from Lake Panic dam in South Africa’s flagship wildlife reserve. Officials at Kruger National Park said the animal grabbed 29-year-old Jacques van der Sandt and disappeared under the water at a golf course next to a staff residential area. Rangers killed the crocodile after a two-hour search on Wednesday night. The body of Van der Sandt, the son of a park employee, was recovered. Oubaas Coetzer, a police officer, said Van der Sandt was attacked while he and a friend played a game to see who could retrieve the most golf balls from the dam. Source: theguardian.com

A beggar (64) arrested in Iran last week had millions of rials (thousands of dollars) in his pockets and a great deal more in two bank accounts. The former street vendor was stopped by a police patrol cracking down on beggars in Bukan and they found he had 110 million rials (about $3 300) in his pockets. Last month, President Hassan Rouhani ordered police to clear the streets of beggars and to identify the criminal networks behind some of them. Source: iol.co.za.

Studies show that when Dad steps up, Mom is more likely to be a successful breastfeeder. Health24 reports allege that when new dads are involved in a breastfeeding support programme at the hospital, new moms are more likely still to be breastfeeding three months later. “This is consistent with what is in the literature suggesting fathers play an important role in breastfeeding,” leading author Jennifer Abbass-Dick of the University of Ontario’s Institute of Technology in Canada is quoted as saying.
The world is divided into six floral kingdoms. All these kingdoms encompass several countries, and in some cases, several continents. South Africa, which has a floral kingdom wholly contained within the country, is the one exception. The Cape Floral Kingdom has 9 600 plant species, 70% of which are not found anywhere else in the world.

Qualified instructor Martie Spanenburg and her zumbathon team will lead a zumba charity fundraising event at the Boksburg branch of appliance retailer Hirsch’s on 13 December, from 9:00 to 10:00. A similar event will be held at the Meadowdale branch, from 11:00 to 12:00. Residents are encouraged to attend the event, to party their way to fitness while supporting local charities. Spanenburg, a qualified zumba instructress, described zumba as a feel-good, fun dance programme. She told the tame TIMES that since its inception in 2001 the fitness craze had grown to become the world’s largest – and most successful – dancefitness programme. “More than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages take weekly zumba classes in over 110 000 locations across more than 125 countries,” she said. The benefits of the dancing sport are numerous: among them, better quality of health and fitness and friendship opportunities
within the zumba family. “Every class is a party,” she says. She said instructors go through rigorous training to become official zumba practitioners and that it is very important to attend classes with a qualified instructor. Spanenburg explained that a number of zumba options are available. Among them are aqua zumba (in the pool), zumba toning, zumba gold (for mature adults), and zumba kids. Event organizer and Hirsch’s Boksburg branch’s public relations officer Brigitte Thysse said zumba had been chosen by the company to raise money as it was a fun and exciting way to support local charities. She said a similar zumbathon initiative had been hosted by the Hirsch’s Boksburg branch in 2012, and R3 000 had been raised on the day through double zumbathon sessions. For more information on the upcoming zumbathon, contact brigitte@hirschs.co.za. For further details on zumba, visit www.zumba.com.
