Back to the future! Deur Stefan van Niekerk As jy so op jou bank gelê het die vakansie en na ou flieks gekyk het, sou jy sien in “Back to the future 2” reis Marty McFly van 1985 na 2015. En dis toe wat jy besef: dis 2015! Die toekoms is hier! Maar net toe jy in jou blink oorpakkie in jou supersoniese vaartuig gou Spar toe wou vlieg, om van daardie miniatuur pizzatjies te gaan koop wat woeps-waps in groot pizzas verander, besef jy: jy besit nie silwer klere nie en al hoekom jou kar nie wiele het nie is omdat die bande laasnag afgesteel is. En, o ja, daardie pizzas is ook nog nie op die mark nie. Om een of ander rede, in flieks wat oor die toekoms handel, vlieg almal altyd rond in ruimtetuigies, dra silwer of goue klere wat te styf sit, en het robotte vir vriende. Dalk het ek net te veel Buck Rogers-reekse gekyk. Die toekoms lyk toe eintlik glad nie so anders soos al die TV-reekse en flieks voorspel het nie: ons ry nog in gewone motors rond en pizza kom nog steeds in ‘n boks so groot, dit sal nooit vanself in ‘n standaard, groen, Alberton-asblik pas nie. Maar, dan weer, as jy mooi daaroor gaan nadink het die lewe eintlik, in sekere opsigte, drasties verander sedert 1985. Behalwe die politieke veranderinge in die land, is daar eintlik te veel goed om op te noem. Soos: die melkman lewer nie meer melk by jou voordeur af nie, jy moet dit self aflewer; jy kyk nie meer flieks op ‘n TV-stel so groot en swaar soos ‘n sumo-stoeier, of gaan huur videobande met flieks op by die videowinkel wat jy op jou videomasjien speel nie; niemand skryf meer vir mekaar briewe en pos dit in ‘n posbus by die poskantoor nie; ons het selfone, skootrekenaars, i-pads, die internet, dstv, pvr... So, al vlieg ons nog nie rond op skateboards, of gaan ons voordeure elektronies oop soos in Back to the Future nie, ten minste gaan daar baie meer aan by die druk van ‘n knoppie in 2015 as in 1985. Dis nou te sê as die krag nie af is, of jy in die swembad gespring het met jou selfoon in jou sak nie.

Benoni schools’ Matric results Four of Benoni’s high schools - Benoni High, St Francis College, Belvedere School and Wordsworth High - had 100% Matric pass rates for 2014. According to Benoni High principal Jake Ceronio, this is the 41st consecutive year the school has achieved a 100% pass rate and he thanks the staff, parents and committee members for all the hard work they put in, not only in the past, but especially last year, as this was the first group of Matrics to write the Department of Education’s CAPS syllabus. The 305 Matric learners of Benoni High, between them, achieved 252 distinctions. St Francis College’s 42 pupils obtained 29 distinctions. Wordsworth High was unable to verify the number of distinctions their Matrics received, but this will be updated at a later time. LSEN school Belvedere improved from a 97% pass rate in 2013 to 100% last year. They had 23 learners and obtained two distinctions. Hoërskool Brandwag just missed a 100% pass rate with 99%. Between the 184 Matrics, they achieved 131 distinctions. Principal James Wright says the school is proud of the Matrics and the school’s improvement from a 98.4% pass rate in 2013 to 2014’s 99%. Willowmoore High was next in the Benoni school rankings, with
a 98.13% pass rate. The 161 Matrics obtained 93 distinctions between them. Unity Secondary School achieved a pass rate of 97.9% with their 194 Matrics receiving a total of 92 distinctions. Deputy principal Buyile Zondo says it was thanks to the Matrics’ support for each other and the teachers’ dedication to helping their learners that the pass rate was good. Hoërskool Hans Moore had a 2014 pass rate of 97%, with principal Ertjies Hattingh saying everything had gone well for their school. Benoni Muslim School’s pass rate dropped from 100% in 2013 to 95% in 2014. The school’s 40 Matrics obtained 48 distinctions. Gekombineerde Skool Noorderlig also saw a drop in their pass rate, from 95% in 2013 to 90% in 2014. Their 83 Matrics achieved 23 distinctions. Crystal Park High saw a vast improvement, as they went from a 57.5% pass rate in 2013 to an 87.5% pass rate in 2014. Between the 72 Matrics, they received eight distinctions. Principal Frikkie Smith says they are all very happy with the 30% increase in the school’s pass rate. Petit High School saw a slight drop in its pass rate, as it went from 86.9% in 2013 to 84.8% in 2014. Principal Marina Nortier says this year they will aspire to a pass rate in the 90s.

Tips for first-timers at school: Normalize those feelings of nervousness. Tell your kids that everyone feels a little nervous and worried when starting a new phase of life and that these feelings are very normal. Talk freely and regularly about starting school and start to prepare the child as early as possible. Make it a dinner-time subject and encourage kids to talk about what they are feeling. If there is something particular that they are nervous about, try to encourage them to talk about it. Do a dry run. If they are overly concerned about the whole process, plan a “practice” school day when they get up in the morning, put on their uniform, pack their bags and walk or drive to school. Eat a packed lunch at home. Some kids worry about accessing their lunches, or may not be used to bringing lunch from home. Help them write a list of what they might like in their lunch box, and have a couple of “packed lunch” days beforehand. Draw up a school day schedule. Children love routines and when they start school their usual routine will change. Work with them to write up a daily routine and discuss with them how the day will work. Organize a play date. If you know of other children who will be starting with your child, arrange for them to play together a few times. On the first day they will appreciate seeing a familiar face in the schoolyard.
After such a lovely summer break, it is understandable if your school veteran is reluctant to go back to school and all the structure and rules that go with it. Many kids suffer from the post-holiday blues and do not want their idyllic summer to end. This is a normal reaction. If their anxiety or reluctance seems extreme, however; or if they are really feeling down, there may be something particular worrying them. Try to get them to verbalize what is bothering them, although they may not really know what it is. It could be as simple as being concerned about which class they will be in, or they may be nervous about coping in a higher grade. Maybe they have an unresolved issue from the previous year.
It is not at all unusual for parents to suffer from anxiety about their child or children going off to school, with parents of firsttimers having to deal with their little baby’s new status as a “big school” child. Parents should attend all the transition days with their child and take advantage of being able to talk to the school staff and other parents. If possible, parents should chat to other parents whose kids are already at school. It can help ease the anxiety to get some inside knowledge beforehand, for example, to find out where to drop off and pick up your child. Before your family knows it, the school year will be back in full swing with the Easter holidays beckoning.
It may be difficult to work out what the problem is and how to deal with it. As far as they are concerned, they do not like school and the solution to the problem is not to go there. Obviously, parents have to make it clear that attending school is a given, but they can help children come up with solutions and strategies to make their time there more enjoyable. Serious issues like bullying or learning difficulties, however, will need to be taken up with the school.

A Matric holiday that will truly make a
difference CHARITY DRIVE: The boys from Project Colour, Michael Greeff, Sebastian Julicher, Ruan de Lange, Thomas Coward and Ayrton da Silva Seven 2014 matriculants and their support team embarked on the adventure of a lifetime in December. They planned to travel 3,500km across South Africa in the most unsuitable transport, “the humble tuk tuk,” to raise money for St. Francis Care Centre in Boksburg, a hospice and Aids care centre. Their route started at the care centre on 27 December and by last week they had already completed about 3,000km of their journey. On Friday, they were in the Western Cape and their journey is expected to end in Cape Town on 11 January. They travelled along the lesser known roads through Welkom, Ladybrand, Durban, the Garden Route, Karoo and finally Cape Town. The trip, which has not only been about fun and adventure but also about stopovers at charitable organizations, was inspired by a similar tuk tuk race through India in which competitors were required to raise money for charity. In this case, the boys have decided to explore their own country and take on the challenge to see if the humble tuk tuk could complete the challenging journey. The boys were, however, well prepared, being armed with tools and spares to keep the tuk tuk running. “Originally, we wanted to take part in a similar adventure in India, but this proved to be too costly. We then thought if we brought the same idea to South Africa, we could make it more relevant, raise money and create an event that will provide a sustainable income for local charities for years to come.” “We chose the St. Francis Care Centre because it is one of the smaller charities that doesn’t always receive the attention it deserves. The Centre is a true place of miracles,” says Ayrton Da Silva, Founder of Project Colour. The boys matriculated from St John’s College, Bishop Bavin School, Beaulieu College and St Benedicts College. All seven boys – bar one – live in Ekurhuleni and are committed to helping community projects in their area. The boys have all been friends for years, mostly through their sporting connections.
Ayrton, along with Thomas Coward and Sebastian Julicher, all rowed internationally. Brenden Crawford is currently in the South African swimming team. Michael Greeff is the geeky, but good-looking glue that holds the team together, Lebo is clearly the comedian and Ruan is the tough guy who will take on difficult situations. Tuks tuks may be a common sight in Asia, but they are only just catching on in South Africa. They are small and compact and have the tiniest of engines – they are glorified lawnmowers really. Other than a small roof, they are open to all weather conditions, and so are not usually used on long journeys. However, the boys are hoping that the quirky and novel looks of the tuk tuks will attract attention wherever they go. The goal is to raise money through sponsorships and donations. They already have a number of prominent sponsors on board, such as: ACDC Dynamics, Atul Auto, Altech Netstar, Canon, Fournos Bakery Group, Cell C, Microsoft, Jasco, Safari 4x4 Hire, Rowlin National Brokers and Carpa Surveillance. They are hoping that this will be just the first race of this kind through the country and that it could become an annual event, to provide a sustainable income for charities across South Africa.
St Francis Care Centre:
The centre was built by Father Stan Brennan several decades ago as an Aids hospice. However, now that Aids treatment has changed, it caters for anyone who needs care. It now has a 48-bed facility for adults and the Rainbow Cottage to care for neglected and orphaned children. The boys love spending time with the little ones and it is not often that the children have the opportunity to play rowdy and boisterous games unless these Matric boys come over to play.
The name January is derived from the Latin name “Januaris” which refers to the Roman god of gates and doorways. As we enter the gates of 2015 we tend to look back at the past and, more importantly, forward to the coming year. It is a time to reflect on changes we want or need to make. New Year’s resolutions will be declared with optimism and the intention is to make each year better than the last. Yet, many people are unable to achieve their goals, with some even throwing in the towel after a week or two. The University of Scranton conducted a study on New Year’s resolutions and came up with the results detailed in the graphics below, which are somewhat disappointing. So why should you set goals for 2015 if none of your good intentions paid off in the past? Experts believe that people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who do not explicitly make resolutions. Thus, you have nothing to lose and plenty to gain.

Hundreds of drunk drivers arrested From 1 December 2014 to 1 January 2015 in Ekurhuleni, highly intensified operations by lawenforcers adopting a no-nonsense approach to irresponsible drivers putting innocent road users’ lives at risk yielded a total of 341 arrestees, with the majority being drivers under the influence of alcohol. A total of 313 arrests were effected. “Two-hundred-and-eleven arrested for drunken driving included a driver who was responsible for one of the twentytwo fatalities that occurred – the driver
ran over a pedestrian on a sidewalk in the Germiston CBD,” says Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department. The 22 persons who died included eight pedestrians, three motorcyclists, seven drivers and four passengers. The eight pedestrians included a sevenyear-old-girl run over in Tembisa and a female passenger who died on the N3 southbound near Leondale when she allegedly alighted from her vehicle to attend to the call of nature. “The 130 arrested speeders included a
driver in a BMW sedan clocked going 213km/h on R21 (Albertina Sisulu) in Olifantsfontein,” Chief Supt Kgasago explained. Seventy-seven other arrests included that of a drunk Metro Police impostor in full uniform soliciting bribes from motorists in Katlehong and arrests for possession of hijacked vehicles and dealing in narcotics. Six drug-dealers arrested in Boksburg, Germiston and Brakpan were found in possession of cat, crystal meth, dagga and mandrax valued at over R200,000.

A busy festive season for EMPD STUCK IN THE MUD: Criminals had to leave their truck and loot behind when their truck became stuck in the soggy ground. Criminals hoping to steal truck tyres on 29 December misjudged the effects of the rain and ended up without the loot. Unknown men broke the locks of the premises next to a truck company early in the morning and overpowered the guard stationed there, hitting him with a hammer and tying him up. They drove their own truck on to the premises and cut open the palisade fencing to gain access to the neighbouring truck company. Then they drove their truck through the gap in the fence and, after breaking into the container containing truck tyres, started loading the loot on to their truck. The criminals, however, did not take the rain and soggy ground into consideration, and when they tried to drive away, their now heavily loaded vehicle became stuck in the mud. “They had no other choice but to flee without their loot or their truck,” says Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North SAPS.
Hijacking turns into perjury A case of perjury was opened against a truck driver after he laid a false statement with the police. The driver originally alleged that he was hijacked on 19 December when he was driving his truck to a warehouse and a vehicle with blue lights stopped him. “The driver alleged that two unknown African males in Metro Police uniforms approached him, pointed at him with a firearm, and took him with the truck
to the N3 highway,” says Lieutenant Juanita Coetzer, communications officer for the Boksburg North police. When the investigating officer interviewed the driver, however, he confessed that he had not been hijacked but that the suspects had made a deal with him and paid him R4,000 to hand over the truck. The driver has been arrested on a charge of perjury and detained at the Boksburg North Police Station.

UPHOLDING BY-LAWS: EMPD officers processed the impounded taxis from Benoni at the EMPD Boksburg pound. There were over 40 accidents recorded in the Benoni and Bromberg areas over the festive season, with 34 being recorded in Benoni. According to Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago of the EMPD, only one fatality was recorded – that of a pedestrian who died on the N12 West near the Voortrekker bridge on 1 December in an accident involving two vehicles. Seven drivers were arrested in Bromberg for driving under the influence of alcohol, eight drivers ended up behind bars for speeding, and three stolen vehicles were recovered - two in Benoni and one in Bromberg. According to Chief Supt Kgasago, 27 warrants of arrest for outstanding traffic fines were executed in Benoni and 19 in Bromberg.
“Nine hawkers were removed in Benoni and three illegal structures removed. Nine vagrants were removed in Benoni and 19 complaints attended to in Benoni,” he added. During stop-and-search operations, over 400 vehicles were stopped in the area. EMPD officers assisted housing officials on 18 and 19 December in the verification process of the shacks in the N12 informal settlement for the purpose of creating a database. “Meanwhile, taxis that are a menace on Voortrekker Road were attended to. On 19 December 30 taxis were impounded and a further 23 were confiscated on 23 December for violating the by-laws. Each taxi was fined R750 with an added administration fee of R212. The special operation is on-going,” Chief Supt Kgasago concluded.
CAUGHT RED-HANDED: A Boksburg North police officer arrested a suspicious-looking man in Rietfontein Road on 6 January. The policeman stopped him after noticing the suspicious-looking man driving a charcoal-coloured Opel Kadett and searched his vehicle, finding seven pieces of abalone and numerous allegedly false passports inside it. The man will appear in court soon.

CharlieHebdoattack Twelve people were killed after two gunmen stormed the offices of satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, France on Wednesday. Among those killed was the magazine’s editor, Stephane Charbonnier. A police officer was gunned down in the street as the men fled the scene. By Thursday an 18-year-old had handed himself over to police and the two suspected gunmen had identified in the media as brothers Said and Cherif Kouachi. On Friday the brothers were gunned downed as they fled a warehouse north of Paris, firing at police. AirAsia plane crash: pings detected in search for black box
Indonesian search-and-rescue teams have possibly detected signals from the black box of AirAsia flight QZ8501, raising hopes that investigators will soon obtain key clues on why the plane went down. The pings were detected on Friday morning, 12 days after the plane went missing over the Java Sea while carrying 162 people from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore. Searchers have pulled 46 bodies of the plane’s passenger and crew from the water, as well as a scattering of debris. No survivors have been found. (theguardian.com)

Ndlovu selected as FISA commission member Towards the end of last year, The World Rowing Federation, FISA announced that, Lawrence Sizwe Ndlovu, South Africa’s 2012 Olympic Champion and ex- Mondeor High learner was selected as commission member with the title of Lightweight Men’s Athlete Representative. This new title will see Ndlovu working with the Executive Committee of FISA addressing the needs and issues concerning the rowers of the world in that event. It may also include partaking and influencing the FISA decision making from the Athlete’s point of view. Once Ndlovu attends
the first meeting with the Committee next month in Frankfurt, he will be informed of his all his responsibilities. When asked how he feels about this appointment, Ndlovu told tame TIMES, “I feel honoured. It is a sign of recognition for the work and the years I have put it in Rowing. I am looking forward to getting the exposure and being part of the Commission. The idea of knowing that I am able to contribute positively in the Athlete’s lives not only in my country but the Athletes from all parts of the world is humbling and flattering,” adding “I am looking forward to the challenges and the responsibilities the position might
come with.” In order to be selected specific criteria for selection needs to be met. The FISA Committee then has a list of delegates that met the requirement that they choose from. “I was informed that I had made the list, submitted the requested documentation and awaited the results,” Ndlovu explained. Ndlovu currently stays in the South of Johannesburg while his training base is in Pretoria. His main focus in on the 2016 Olympics with his 2015 goals being to well in the World Championships and qualifying for the upcoming Olympics.
