Saunders: ready to represent SA Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za Miss Earth South Africa 2014, Ilzé Saunders (23), left for South East Asia last week to represent South Africa at the international Miss Earth competition. The North West BA Comms graduate is among 100 delegates from across the world. She has arrived in Hong Kong and will spend three weeks in South East Asia, travelling throughout the Philippines visiting schools and communities, promoting environmental campaigns and programmes and meeting with dignitaries and environmental bodies across the region. This year’s international Miss Earth theme is based on Eco-Tourism, and the Miss Earth South Africa is proudly endorsed both by the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Department of Tourism. Saunders is ready to share with her fellow delegates South Africa’s stand and objectives pertaining to sustainable tourism. “Our country is rich in its natural heritage; South Africa is the third most biodiverse country in the world. The country encompasses about 480,000 square miles (1 200 000km2) and has about 10% of all plant species on Earth. Our unique geography allows the country to support a diverse population of plants and animals. Eco-tourism aims to involve communities that border these-eco diverse spaces, thus contributing to an eco-economy. The goal of eco-tourism is to create an experience that makes a significant commitment to the culture and economies of the local communities and thus provides a positive

contribution to the conservation of our biodiversity,” Saunders said. The blonde beauty will showcase a one-of-a-kind national costume created by Sonwabile Ndamase from Vukani Range Creations. Delegates at the international Miss Earth are required to present an “Eco-Dress,” which has to be made from responsibly sourced, sustainable and/or upcycled materials. Saunders will showcase a design created by Louis of Louis Designs and Flintsky Design, and sponsored by Zaitoon Rabaney of the Botanical Society of South Africa. Saunders’s evening wear garment is designed by South African designer Jose De Canha and her swimwear extraordinaire has been sponsored by the one and only Dax Martin. “I have a burning desire to help people and to make a difference, by taking action and helping to change communities towards a better future for everyone. By giving hope and inspiring change in others, my life has been enriched. It is an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I have been able to create practical projects which have improved the lives of people. To give inspires me. Touching one person at a time and creating hope,” Saunders said. tame TIMES wishes her the best of luck and knows her South African light will shine brightly abroad. We await with anticipation the crowning of Miss Earth on 29 November.

November is here and the shops are decorated for Christmas. With this, moods shift. Either people’s spirits are higher as it is getting closer to the festive season and, most of all, their annual holiday - or people are completely exhausted and fall short with their work as the end of the year is near and they just want it over... now. There are more functions and social gatherings and people tend to be more adventurous by drinking cocktails. Look out for our gourmet feature on pages 8&9 where we showcase colourful cocktails and for those who don’t drink alcohol, we showcase mocktails. However, please also read Celebrate Responsibly which gives you tips to be responsible when enjoying the silly season with silly drinks. If there is one thing I can ask of you - please be responsible when drinking and do not drive. On my side, this time of the year my schedule becomes crazy and jam-packed, as there are so many events to cover; however, I do this with a smile on my face. I was at Christway’s appreciation concert last Friday and saw little children singing “I am marching for Jesus.” This was something so cute and refreshing and totally took me away from the hectic pace of work. I am looking forward to the holidays as I normally do, but before I can think about that, I need to get through November and December. tame TIMES is once again supporting Movember, as you will see by our header’s moustache. Men, look out for our Movember Show your Mo competition on pg 16 where you are asked to showcase your weird and wonderful made-up moustache. You could win a grooming hamper and a meal voucher. Share with me what you look forward to the most during the silly season. laurelle@tametimes.co.za

Operation Kliprivier Drive Cleanup CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The City of Johannesburg Region F, in partnership with the South of Joburg Business and Tourism (SOJO), embarked on a cleanup and awareness campaign along Kliprivier Drive between Turf Club Street and Rifle Range Road this past Saturday from 9:00 till 13:00. MMC of Development Planning and Urban Management Clr Roslyn Greeff was present at the opening. Citizen Relation Manager Pieter van Vuuren said, “Challenges in these areas are: the two badly managed properties and the illegal dumping site on the side of Kliprivier Drive; illegal outdoor advertisements on the damaged boundary walls and the old KFC building on the corner of Kliprivier Drive and Rifle Range Road.” The aim of this cleanup was not only to rid the area of the waste and grime on the side of Kliprivier Drive, but also to create awareness among the residents living on the adjacent properties, and to stop illegal dumping, advertising and other activities that are causing the decline of the gateways to the South of Johannesburg. This is being done through an ongoing by-laws education

programme for residents, which started a week prior to the cleanup. tame TIMES witnessed children and a few residents who were willing to help with the cleanup, while others just stood by and looked on or refused to help. Nazier Saptoe, a resident of the Chrisville Council Flats said, ”Clr Landis is doing everything she can to uplift this community; however, many people don’t like her as she says it how it is. We need to support her and this will uplift the community. The children were very grateful for the many hands that were cleaning up the area.” An audit is in the process of being completed by the City’s Housing Department and Pikitup, to see how many of the council flats need a 240l bin. Bins will be given to them, and skips will be placed nearby for larger items. The residents will be educated on which days to take their dustbins out for their refuse to be collected, and how much they will be fined if they are caught dumping. One suspect was arrested by Booysens SAPS for possession of dagga after being found with a packet filled with dagga while the SAPS were doing random checks. Roads Agency and City Parks assisted by cutting trees and grass, and doing maintenance work. Citrus trees sponsored by City Parks and other trees will be planted and it will be the residents’ responsibility to take care of them. Other role-players in this much needed initiative are Thaba Eco Hotel, Aspen Nature Estate, LDAC Booysens, Calistos, SOS Security and various Departments of City of Johannesburg, JMPD and Booysens SAPS. Aspen kindly sponsored the use of the front loader, which piled all the rubbish in a heap which Pikitup collected. “The two homes in Jackson Street, West Turffontein were also cleaned, however the residents refused to help. A sick child was discovered in the house by Social Development, which will come back to remove the child. Many other toddlers were living in those conditions,” Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO said. It is believed that the NPA are investigating these two houses, as there are bad elements such as drugs, violence and an illegal recycling company. Well done and ROLE PLAYERS: Malcolm Vermuelen (TEH), thank you to all role-players who assisted in Nicky Vakaloudis (SOJO), Clr Rozlyn Greff the cleanup. According to Cst Rebecca Bila, Moffatview SAPS spokeswoman, “The body was wrapped in a carpet and starting to decompose. The members could not identify how old the deceased was, but estimated that he was more or less in his early 40s. A white T-shirt with blood was found with a brown blanket five metres away, but we are not sure whether the two are related. An inquest docket has been opened.” The body was taken to a government mortuary.

A resident informed tame TIMES via our website that the vendor who sells newspapers on the corner of Bellairs and Klipriver Roads was stabbed just before 7:00 on 4 November. According to the woman, “The culprit stabbed him to take the media’s money and left by hopping into a taxi. I was asked to stop, as I see him every day. He was bleeding and I took him to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital where he was stabilised.” Mondeor SAPS has confirm the incident and a case has been opened.

RIP SAPO? Until recently, the lonely, the friendless and the unfriended could count on at least one source of regular and prolific correspondence – Sanral. With the current post office strike in force, however, even that once reliable supplier of evidence that someone paid attention to one’s whereabouts and cared enough to send a steady stream of badly taken snapshots has been stopped in its tracks. With a backlog of 11,4 million items at one of the main Johannesburg depots according to the Sunday Times, Sanral invoices will probably not be delivered before January, which will

probably mean the longest interruption in postal services in decades, if not centuries. Since 1500, when a Portuguese captain left a letter in a milkwood tree in Mosselbay that was later delivered to Portugal by a passing ship, the post office has been part of South African society. It was formalised in 1853 with the first South African stamp, the famous Cape Triangular Stamp, and it was not long before mail delivery became an integral part of social and business life, being generally regarded as a reliable and trustworthy service. In 1905, the largest diamond in the world was sent to London by ordinary snail mail – without tracking numbers, without registration and without insurance. Although in recent years, there has a been a worldwide decline in the demand for traditional postal services as a result of fax machines, email, SMSes, social media and WhatsApp; the South African Post Office (SAPO) is in a particularly bad way because of negative consumer perceptions about its services, poor financial performance and violent strikes. In 2008, online mail order giant Amazon stopped using SAPO because of the large number of its parcels that went missing. Last month, national Parliament learned that at the end

Opinion piece by Palesa Yates

Resident stops a major house fire Thanks to Kibler Park resident Lenie Soekoe, a house fire in Carol Road was extinguished before it destroyed the house on 7 November. Clr Stewart wishes to extend his gratitude to Soekoe for alerting everybody on the community policing forum and for the speedy assistance of Fire Chief Mr Motumi of the

of September the post office had already overspent its budget for the current financial year by half a billion rand and that, while it made a nett after-tax profit of R377 million in 2007-2008, in the 2013-2014 year it has seen a loss of R359 million. The current postal workers’ strike, which has seen violence in Randburg, Rosebank and Robertsham, has now dragged on for almost three months. Should the SAPO simply give up and close down the rest of its premises? Should this very troubled SOE be privatised? Or should government try to turn the post office around? There are some very good reasons to fix the

SAPO. Firstly, it has 23 000 workers. Although 24 top dogs received hefty 26% increases in the past financial year, a mail handler interviewed by the Sunday Times who has worked for SAPO for 18 years as a casual worker reported earning a basic salary of only R3 500 a month. [http://www.fin24.com/Tech/ Opinion/Who-really-needs-the-Post-Officeanyway-20141028] Secondly, many vulnerable and needy South Africans who cannot access couriers require medicines, study materials and important documents to be delivered reliably and affordably. Thirdly, traffic congestion in large urban centres is such that we cannot afford more couriers on our roads. Fourthly, many mail order businesses could be started up easily and cheaply using a website and a trustworthy national postal service (Amazon began in a garage). Fifthly, a well-run post office would be a source of national pride. Christmas will be an interesting test for the SAPO; but, in the current circumstances, it is unlikely that they will be sending out a bumper crop of gifts, parcels and Christmas cards this year.

Letters Brighten City should tell us when the corner their system changes By Ikaneng Sydney Kokoropo Sydneykokoropo@gmail.com Challenging the inner critic

Gysie is skoonveld.

Norma Rudham writes: While it is encouraging that the City is at last trying to liaise with the public about the billing crisis, I was disappointed at the way my query was handled recently. Up until August 2013 I received a subsidy for rates, utilities, etc esp and I was required to register every six months. When I went to re-register in August 2013 in Loveday Street I was not told that rates would no longer be subsidised on esp. On receiving my monthly statements I noticed that the subsidy had been cancelled and I sent off numerous emails to the City querying this. I saw advice in a newspaper from a councillor providing contact details in respect of a rates subsidy to the numerous people who were experiencing difficulties in obtaining it. However, this advice did not state that this rebate was replacing the esp and that persons receiving the subsidy on esp should re-apply. I therefore assumed that the City was probably operating two systems, which has sometimes been the case in the past. When all my attempts to obtain a response from the City failed, I filled in a new rates form and sent it to the relevant department. Even after calling to confirm that my application had been receive in good order, I still did not receive the subsidy, however. I then went to the Loveday Street branch and was told that my form had been received without attachments and that I had been contacted by the City twice in this regard, which was not the case. My purpose therefore in attending the Billing Day on 1 November

was to request a credit for the amounts I had been billed due to their lack of communication in failing to advise me that I should re-register on the new system. After explaining all this to the council employee, I was asked how then did I know that I should fill another form to re-apply the implication being that I was aware that another form should be completed so why had I waited so long to do it? My efforts to explain to her that I did not know and I was “merely groping in the dark” fell on deaf ears and I requested her to call a manager which she duly did, phoning a Mr Garvern Machethe. After I had explained to him what had happened, he called the Loveday Street Manager and asked him how the public had been advised. His response was that they could not inform everyone, but that they had informed our councillors. With respect, our councillors do not work for the Rates Department and while it is beneficial that they should be advised of whatever system is in place in this regard, they cannot be expected to inform each and every individual of any changes to the system. This is the responsibility of the City. I was told that we were informed, but I did not see any notification. I left my details with Mr Machethe who was, in fact, most obliging and helpful. The ANC Councillor also introduced himself, which was a nice gesture. Thank you, Councillor Jane, for advising us about the above enquiry day - maybe the City is making an effort at last.

Community effort to rescue snake A snake was rescued after it was seen in the parking lot in front of the Aspen Nature Home Association and Pam Golding Properties offices on Tuesday 4 November. It is believed a motorist was driving past and saw the snake. After parking, he tried to locate the snake but the reptile had disappeared under his car. Warren Evans, the owner of Torino’s, helped the man, with other workers, to rescue and box the snake while Lionel Brockelbank, the head of security of Aspen Nature Estate, contacted snake-catcher Mike Allen. Deseree Hauser of Pam Golding Properties told tame TIMES, “Allen came and identified the snake as a mole snake and released it into the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve.” Well done to all who were involved in capturing the snake, keeping it safe and releasing it. SNAKE CATCHER: Mike Allen with the snake.

What is the inner critic? The inner critic is a critical voice within us that influences our actions and negatively impacts the pursuit of our personal and professional goals. Unlike the conscience, which serves as a moral guide, the inner critic is negative, destructive and degrading. It holds us back and limits our ability to respond appropriately to the challenges of life. We can destroy the inner critic: • Identify the inner critic By consciously recognizing it and “flushing” it out of our system. You will recognize it if you slip into a negative or pessimistic mood every time you want to try something. It keeps on telling us that we are not “good enough, smart enough or clever enough” whenever we try to venture into unchartered territories. We can only do something about the inner critic if we are conscious of it. • Support yourself Our lives are always swinging on the pendulum of either supporting and motivating ourselves or sabotaging ourselves. Our choice should be an emphatic “YES” to supporting ourselves and rejecting all cynical and negative thoughts. How do we support ourselves? By speaking positively to ourselves. A few minutes of positive self-talk each morning can go a long way to filling the space occupied by a self-limiting and self-sabotaging inner critic. Remember, words do not only describe reality - they create reality. Right words drive right actions. • Get a coach or a mentor The role of a good coach or mentor can never be underestimated. A coach or a mentor can help you navigate through your limitations and discover your strengths. You will gain clarity and focus your life on the goals you want to achieve. Let us free ourselves from the enemy within us, the inner critic. Let us not live our lives through the eyes of fear, self-sabotage and limitations.

Children of the water

At the recent Mini-Olympics gala held at the Linden Municipal Swimming Pool and hosted by the Linrand Swimming Club, swimmers Daniel Keating and Jessica Otto, who both swim for Bonny’s Water World, excelled. Their hard work over the past few months culminated in their taking the trophies in their respective age-groups. Keating also won

the top junior boy Victor Ludorum Trophy for six-year-olds and Otto, the Victrix Ludorum Shield. Many others BWW swimmers also displayed their swimming skills to good effect, taking medals and ribbons in various events and enjoying this prestigious annual gala with their parents.

Mulbarton Primary celebrates 20 years Mulbarton Primary celebrated the school’s 20th year of existence on Saturday 1 November. The day was filled with activities designed to entertain both young and old. The Noordgesig based Boys Brigade played a piece in honour of the school and this was followed by a talent show that saw all grades showcase their singing and dancing, to the delight of parents and fellow pupils. Students created a burst of colour during the colour

fest later in the day and a record number of jumping castles and inflatable slides were made available throughout the festivities, with two giant slides and an inflatable soccer pitch being the highlight of many a child’s day. “We want to ensure a fun day for all the children and parents of Mulbarton Primary in celebration of this great achievement,” said Mr L Kistadoo, Principal of Mulbarton Primary.

Protect your staff during a robbery The robbery of a business can leave employees traumatised, injured or, in the worst-case scenario, dead. “Injuries or death during an attack are a business-owner’s worst nightmare,” Grant Dunnington, CEO of SBV Services said. “By their very nature, robberies are terrifying and unpredictable and, while no-one knows exactly what will happen when violence is aimed at your business, it’s crucial that your employees are empowered to reduce the chances of people being killed. Beyond cash management solutions, at SBV Services we

believe in protecting human life and strive to empower the business community with knowledge about how to save lives when under attack.” Preparing your employees for a robbery sounds easier said than done, but it is possible. The first step is to ensure that all employees have been taught how to use all of the security features at a business’s premise. While this is done as a preventative measure, it is imperative that the training does not create a sense of unease or panic.

During a robbery, employees should remember the following: -

-

-

-

Stay calm. Resistance could provoke the attackers into becoming aggressive, which could only result in tragedy; Follow the perpetrators’ instructions to the letter. It is human nature for people to volunteer to do more than has been asked of them, just to get the ordeal over with as quickly as possible. Robbers, however, often interpret such behaviour as a trap, causing them to panic; Should your employees need to move around in response to the attackers’ instructions, they must vocalize every action while keeping their hands in open sight. If they tell the robbers exactly what they are about to do, the robbers will not think they are being unco-operative; Stay alert. Mentally recording everything you can about the robbers – their races, ages, clothing, eye colour or distinct features such as tattoos and piercings, as well as everything they touch (should they not be wearing gloves), will help to catch the perpetrators after the event; When the robbers are about to leave or are leaving, do not look them in the eye or try to run after them; As soon as they leave, ensure that everyone at the premises is safe; go into a secure location or lock up the premises to call the police – just in case the robbers come back; Ask everyone who witnessed the incident to stay put until the police arrive and have taken statements; While waiting for the police, leave the crime scene exactly as it was left by the robbers.

Lizeth Kotze Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za It is not just happening somewhere else, or on the other side of town. It is happening in every neighbourhood. The drug called “nyaope” is rapidly gaining a strangle-hold on the youth of Gauteng, whenever and wherever they are. Nyaope consists mainly of marijuana and heroin, which is what makes it so addictive. Costing between R35 and R40 a straw, nyaope is an expensive habit to support and is therefore associated with crime, theft and extreme violence. Nyaope has both physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. The main symptoms of withdrawal are: muscle spasms and pain; stomach cramps; flu-like symptoms. Parents are encouraged to note any marked changes in their children’s behaviour and health. Signs that could indicate drug abuse are: drowsiness; mood swings and self-centredness; low levels of motivation; loss of a sense of time; loss

of interest in previously enjoyed activities; lack of personal hygiene. If you suspect your child is abusing drugs, you can obtain multi-drug tests from SANCA and pharmacies. These tests come with instructions and can be conducted in the privacy of your own home. UPCYCLED FUNCTIONAL DECOR: Kliprivier Community Market founders Samantha Derham and Sara Mortimer at Chris Pieters’s stall

EVERY SUNDAY: a place to meet, a place to buy, a place to chill

Thanks to two intrepidly green entrepreneurs, Samantha Derham and Sara Mortimer, residents in the South now have a new community market to visit on a Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00. The Kliprivier Community Market is held every Sunday and is situated in the Two Trees Bakery on Kliprivier Drive, Mulbarton. It offers local entrepreneurs a platform to showcase their goods, as long as these are strictly locally produced goods. The Two Trees Bakery has a fenced grassed area with an extensive playground facility

community relationships and promote South Africa’s largest alternative currency - a formalised online-based bartering system using a currency called Talents instead of rands. The system is called the Community Exchange System, and in Cape Town and other parts of the world it has significantly uplifted the communities which use it by keeping exchanges within the local community and therefore benefitting it, as well as building trust, bringing back value to everyday basic goods and services and

with foefie slides, high ropes and jungle gyms – all under tall shady trees where families, singles, couples and friends can enjoy a day out. Derham and Mortimer said, “We really want to use the market and bakery as a space to generate a community hub - a space where local people can meet each other, as well as small local businesses and artisans - which we believe that there is a huge desire and need for.” The market’s main aim is to encourage and support local entrepreneurship, build

alleviating unemployment by empowering every person to find value in the skills they have, because every human being has some skill they can offer their local community. The Johannesburg community is called the Johannesburg Talent Exchange. Please see www.ces.org.za for more information. For more information or if you would like to sell your local goods, please email klipcomarket@gmail.com or like their Facebook page at https://www.facebook. com/klipcomarket. Two Trees Bakery is situated at 101 Kliprivier Road, Mulbarton.

Glenvista VSU launch Roedolf Walker

Roedolf.Walker@tametimes.co.za The Glenvista Victim Support Unit held their official launch on Saturday 8 November. This was, however, only the official launch since the VSU has been in operation for 10 months. The Unit received a baptism of fire when an armed robbery at the Glenvista Shopping Centre caused more than 20 victims to suffer severe trauma. The new VSU responded instantly and, with support from the Brackendowns Victim Support Unit, managed to provide support for all the affected people. “The harshness of a crime scene can be incredibly traumatic for crime victims. We are there to provide emergency counselling to the victims that is much needed

in our community,” said Racquel Neilson, founder of the Glenvista Victim Support Unit. The unit has since handled diverse cases ranging from armed robberies and hijackings to attempted suicide and substance abuse. In the following months the Glenvista VSU’s goal is to provide further training for their current volunteers, as well as to welcome any new volunteers to the unit. In the long term the Glenvista VSU would like to engage with other victim support units in the area to exchange knowledge and help. The Victim Support Unit has requested that anyone who feels that they can make a difference and wants to join the unit should contact Raquel Nielson at raq@tiscali. co.za or find them on Facebook.

AA: fake licences kill Forty people die on South Africa’s roads every day on average, resulting in approximately 14 000 deaths every year. According to the Automobile Association (AA), impaired drivers are a significant contributor to South Africa’s high fatality rate. “Alcohol, for instance plays a major role in driver behaviour. The South African Medical Research Council has indicated that 55% of people killed in road crashes were under the influence of alcohol,” the AA commented. However, the AA has cautioned that alcohol and drugs are not the only causes of driver impairment. An improperly licensed driver who drives without adequate skill can also be said to be impaired from a safety point of view. The Association pointed a finger at fraud and corruption within the driving licensing system as a significant contributing factor to the number of impaired drivers on our roads. Licences that are acquired illegally result in inexperienced drivers using South Africa’s roads without the ability to anticipate potential risks and take appropriate action to prevent a crash. As we know from a number of recent incidents reported, road rage is becoming an increasingly common sight on our roads and leads to motorists disobeying the rules of the road and at times physically engaging with other motorists as a result of their state of mind. “It will take a concerted effort to change the culture of aggression on South Africa’s roads and mind-set by all South Africans to act responsibly,” said the AA.“ Driver fatigue is also a concern that that should not be overlooked. Although typically associated with long-distance driving, fatigue can set in after a long day at work, an outing at the beach, or virtually any intensive activity. “Large portions of the National Road Traffic Act are devoted to driver fitness; however, South Africans need to become more aware and accountable for their own fitness to drive,” said the AA. “When people use the roads while under the influence of alcohol, when fatigued or aggressive or without a valid driving licence, the intention of the law is undermined and people’s safety is compromised,” concluded the AA.

BRAVEHEART: Richard Wedderburn with one of his champion pigeons

The same two qualities that make a human a champion, separate a winning racing pigeon from the rest: the head and the heart. Pigeon racing enthusiast and member of the Edenvale Racing Pigeon Club, Richard Wedderburn explained to tame TIMES that the sport of pigeon racing is about training champions, and winning pigeons are those with sense in their heads and home in their hearts. Despite recent media criticism of pigeon racing, Wedderburn insists the sport is completely ethical. “Each racing enthusiast has given the pigeons in his care a home, where they are given food and shelter from the elements.” He explained it was their love for their nests which compelled them hundreds of kilometres across the sky. Wedderburn is not ashamed to boast of his collection of pedigree pigeons, which he explains are a family inheritance. He comes from a lineage of pigeon racing enthusiasts, having been bitten by the bug at just six years of age. “The adrenalin of seeing your pigeon return home is second to none. This is not just a sport. It is a 24/7 job. These are not your garden variety pigeons. Each day you must put in the necessary time and effort to hone your birds into superb athletes.” Wedderburn has a pigeon loft at his Lyndhurst home, where he keeps over 100 birds. “I care for them like my own children,” he said. He said at this time of the year, from June until December, special attention was given to inoculation of the birds, and to their health and medication. This was also the time when eggs hatched and fledglings were reared. “I have around 60 babies in my care,” he said. He said race training began around April. “The first flight towards home is around 20km and we build up a distance from there, until pigeons are covering

distances of up to 800km. Each bird is given an identity tag and an electronic ring which allows for its exact finishing time to be recorded, down to the smallest decibel.” He explained the process: The birds are driven out in a special truck, with holding enclosures stacked side by side on the back of the vehicle. When the signal is given, a lever is pulled and the birds are all released from their enclosures at the same time. At some events, this means thousands upon thousands of pigeons taking to the sky, in a cloud of feathers and fury. He encourages residents to become involved in this addictive sport. “Belonging to a club like the Edenvale Racing Pigeon Club not only allows you to partake in regular race events, but it provides a warm environment where you can meet people and make good friends. Every one of my good friends is a ‘pigeon guy’. Other guys play golf - we race pigeons.” For more information, visit www. pigeonuniverse.co.za or www.trpf.co.za

Lanzetti tests a Formula Renault 2.0 It is not often that a South African racing driver gets the opportunity to prove his worth on an international level – but one such opportunity was afforded to Karting champ Sebastian Lanzetti. The 18-year-old Glenvista resident was invited to the United Kingdom by SWB Motorsport to test a Formula Renault 2.0 machine. While a relatively unknown formula in South Africa, Formula Renault 2.0 is one of the stepping stones to Formula 1, via World Series by Renault, GP3 and GP2. For Lanzetti, the test lived up to its name in every sense of the word. Before he even saw the car, he was off to Oxford University Sport for a fitness assessment with renowned trainer Stewart Wild. A veteran of the sports fitness industry, Wild has trained everyone from Karting hopefuls to F1 World Champion Jenson Button. Lanzetti met the car for the first time on the second day where a seat fitting took place and after that it was up a flight of stairs to the simulator. As an indication of just how serious the team SWB is, their simulator is a triple-projector setup, with an almost 180° view in front of a Formula Renault tub. Designed to give drivers an idea of how the car behaves on track, it provides realistic feedback for the steering and pedals; it also changes the behaviour of the car according to tyre temperature and wear. Although Lanzetti had driven a similar car in South Africa, this was his first experience of the Formula Renault, with on track testing less than twenty-four hours away.

Conditions at the Blyton Park Test Track on test day one were cold, wet and blustery, adding an unexpected dimension to the test. Undaunted by his lack of true wet weather experience, Lanzetti headed out for session 1; learning the track was his first priority, and with a combination of fast and slow sections, it was not long before he had built a steady rhythm that saw his lap times coming down. Four more sessions were completed thereafter. Day two testing started as day one was cold and overcast and after four sessions the conditions slowly became worse, and with heavier rain and fading light, a decision was made to bring the test to a close. The overall impression of Sebastian from the team was a positive one, particularly with regard to his wet weather ability and his translating the input from driver coach and engineer into on-track results. SWB Motorsport has yet to make their decision on whether to offer Lanzetti a seat, but it was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him, one with the potential to be life-changing. tame TIMES is very proud of Lanzetti and hope SWB Motorsport will give him a seat.

KARTING CHAMP: Sebastian Lanzetti had an awesome and exhilarating time testing a Formula Renault 2.0 in the United Kingdom.
