The atmosphere in the school hall of Marist Brothers Linmeyer was electric last Friday morning (13 June) when 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s broadcasted its Breakfast Xpress show live from the school to launch Joburg Day. To add to the already crazy hype, pop duo LCNVL and folk music phenomenon Jeremy Loops took to the school stage and there is no doubt the hall has never experienced such screaming and excitement. Kendra Szeles, a grade 12 learner, was very courageous, holding up a poster requesting Andrew, one of the Chaplin twins from LCNVL to her matric dance. Just trying to get to the front of the stage was a struggle as one had to worm one’s way through a mass of dancing boys and girls. Mr Norton, Marist Brothers high school’s principal said, “It is a privilege to have the

Caring for animals in need It is amazing what one WhatsApp message can do. A few days after Sarah Wissler sent out a message requesting donations for Irwin’s Animal Shelter, thee bakkie-loads of donations were collected from the public. “I heard Irwin’s was in desperate need so I sent out a message and the response was great,” Sarah Wissler said. A big thank you goes out to all the residents who dropped off their donations at New South Vet in Glenvista. DONATIONS: Just some of the donations collected for Irwin’s Animal Shelter.
Rectifying mistakes
This last week I was faced with the repercussions of a mistake I had made. Even though I was taken aback and fearful I owned up and took responsibility for it. As I wait for the outcome many fears swamp my head on how this could affect my future. It took a sister in Christ to remind me that no matter what, whether something bad or good happens, God is in control. Yes, even if bad things happen God has a master plan for something good to come out of it. She used the testimony of Jannes Labuschagne, an ex-Springbok lock who once got a red card for a high tackle. She explained that a few days before the game he had a dream that he was going to break his neck during the game. On the way to the game, he had the same felling but it was too late to pull out of the game. When he was red-carded he was upset at first as it was not a bad high tackle and he did not even get a yellow card - it was straight dismissal from the game. As he walked off the field back into the change rooms he said he heard God saying ‘I saved you today son’. Through the dramatic conversion to Jesus during his rugby career Jannes is now in fulltime ministry serving the Lord Jesus Christ. The story gave me peace; however, I admit I am being tested as I am quick to say I trust the Lord but now I have to put that in practice. I have done all I can do to rectify my mistake and now I wait on God to do the rest. No matter what the outcome is, even if it is bad, it may be protecting me from something that might harm me even more. As the crazy thoughts rush to my head I need to remind myself that God is not here to harm me even if I did mess up. He waits for me, with opens arms, to run to Him and say ‘Father, I have messed up, I need your help.’ As I read in a daily devotion book when life gives you lemons, make lemonade and most of all trust God.

Avoid loadshedding: reduce consumption Eskom has warned that the risk of loadshedding is currently high and that loadshedding could start if consumption during evening peak-times remains at its current levels. Eskom has requested all its customers, including electricity distributors like City Power, to urge all their customers to reduce electricity consumption drastically between 17:00 and 19:00, to avoid these massive power cuts.
City Power calls on all its customers to heed this call and switch off all non-essential appliances: geysers, pools, heaters and lights in areas where they are not urgently needed. “City Power is doing all it can to keep the lights on for our customers. City Power has also placed on standby many of its technicians to attend to areas that might be affected by power outages,” Sol Masolo, City Power’s spokesperson said.

Innovative thinking New SA regulations for travelling with kids rewarded *Supplied by e-travel.
South Africa’s immigration laws have recently undergone an intense revision with newly appointed Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba saying the amendments are “in the best interests of South Africa’s security and allow for efficient management of migration”. The Department has also expressed concern about the growing issue of child trafficking and has announced new requirements for adults travelling with children. What you need to know Parents travelling with children will now be requested to provide an unabridged birth certificate of all travelling children. This applies even when both parents are travelling with their children and it also applies to foreigners and South Africans alike. When children are travelling with guardians, the guardians are required to produce affidavits from the children’s parents proving permission for the children to travel with them. The following are the new South African immigration regulations concerning travelling with children:

Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za The 2014 APEX Awards were held at a prestigious white-tie gala event at the Sandton Convention Centre on 10 June and hosted by the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA). Nkomo has retired and will always be remembered as the profession’s ‘Champion of Change’ because he was instrumental in putting in place the Marketing, Advertising and Communications Sector. This year, no less than 17 bursaries were awarded at the gala event bringing to a total of 43 the number of APEX bursaries that have been awarded since the launch of the program in 2010. The APEX bursary program affords deserving aspirant, talented students from the AAA School of Advertising – the industry’s official trade school and ‘birthplace of brilliant’- the opportunity to obtain a tertiary qualification as a springboard to their careers in the advertising profession.

Fashion
Trends: Colour me winter With winter 2014 here in full force, South African fashion trends are featuring and focussing on the iconic 1950’s style. To find distinctive items for your closet from chic European styles to local trend setting designers, pop into smaller boutiques; and to select comfortable everyday wear, visit chain stores. Prints retain their popularity in stores and the wardrobes of the fashionable, as they have been for the past two years, and will remain sought after (even very summery florals) throughout the Autumn/Winter season. The long-trending leopard print has left the scene this year, while snakeskin and tiger-prints take the limelight. South Africans have a tendency to shop more along the lines of simple, traditional styles and remain drawn to the “safe” colour chart. This season, pastels and softer colour trends have successfully replaced the dull greys, insipid browns and monotonous blacks that usually make their appearance in our wardrobes when the chill sets in. Those in the know predict more of nude, cream, coral and mint garments in the softest tones, but this time with a difference – to break through the flatness, add a pop of colour with accessories.
A-line coats are a big trend this season. They come in various lengths and can be worn in many different ways, especially as dresses over winter leggings; both long and short A-line coats can also be worn with skinny jeans and boots to keep you both snug and chic on those colder winter days.

When a leader needs to lead By Nieto Hernandez
Gossip is the art of saying nothing in a way that leaves practically nothing unsaid – Walter Winchell LOVING IT: Ronald McDonald, Michelle and Tyla Thorne having fun with other picnickers.
Why go to the paper? Louis Mofokeng writes: Residents living around Rotunda Park in Turffontein are angry and perturbed by the state of the park after the ANC election party on 3 May. The park was left “trashed and in a mess” according to Cllr Tyrell Meyers, who also complained in his letter to the tame TIMES of 3 June that the park was already “completely neglected, so much so that the fencing on the tennis courts is no longer useable, lights often do not work at night, and there is no green gym equipment for kids.” My understanding is that no-one is above the law in this country. It does not matter whether you are pink, blue, green or yellow - you are required to abide by the laws of the land. What is interesting about this report, however, is that it comes from a Councillor who represents the residents of a constituency in the City of Johannesburg in which both DA
and ANC members reside. The question is why he is reporting a case of polluting a public space in a selective manner like this. He is a public representative who represents South Africans of the rainbow nation and is equipped with knowledge of the city’s by-laws and is more privileged than the rest of us, in the sense that he can evoke the relevant by-laws in Council to remedy the incident of 3 May without coming to the newspapers. He can also order the repair of the tennis courts and the improvement of the park as a whole, as it falls within the circle of his duties. He may not be a racist, but there are traces of racism in his report and here I am challenging South Africans to help me with their views as it is said that “Leadership is not found in a position; it is found in action and influence.” God bless South Africa.
Support for SOJO Nicky Vakaloudis writes: SOJO would like to thank all who participated in the SOJO Golf Day fund raiser event on 30 May. We also thank all our sponsors for the wonderful prizes that all four-ball teams were able to enjoy, namely Gold Reef City Theme Park and Casino, Restonic, Gino’s Restaurant, Sinzinani Spa, Etienne Cloete and the Crown Mines Golf Club. We look forward to hosting this event next year and hope you will all join us again. Nicky Vakaloudis, Black Jack (magician) and Nicole Rodway.
Golden wedding anniversary Victor and Lee Okkers of Crown Gardens celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 6 June. Family and friends came together on 7 June at the Turffontein Race Course to celebrate this great milestone of love and commitment.
So let us start by defining gossip so that we progress from the same page, lets us give an elementary example so that no one is left behind – if it has nothing to do with you, if you do not have firsthand facts, if it is not your news to share, then it is probably better that you keep your silence about it. Gossip is a weakness, but ironically gossipmongers feel that the possession of ‘information’ - no matter how ill-accurate or malicious is something empowering. There is no greater lie, gossip has only one purpose, and that is to distract people who have nothing better to do and no better way to deal with the feeling of insufficiency. The other irony with gossip is that it is a phenomenon which plagues relationships which are meant to be solid. Friends, colleagues and even families fall prey to this destructive pastime and the most surprising thing is that for as long as the human race has been in existence, there have been lessons learnt from mistakes – learning lends itself to growing , but it seems we are remaining primitive when it comes to gossip. I mean the facts are clear; nothing you say about me will remain undisclosed – we have all seen the total disintegration of seemingly solid relations due to a loose tongue. Due to the workplace being the place where we spend the major part of the day, workplace gossip can lend itself to severe stress and depression not only for the gossiper, or the receiver or the subject of the corridor chatter. Innovation, productivity, creativity and camaraderie also take a severe knock and often lead to a corporate depression which can easily be identified by employee dissatisfaction and an unstable environment. It was Socrates who said “strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and weak minds discuss people.” Gossip at the workplace puts the organisation at a serious risk of bleeding itself dry, whether the subject is customers or colleagues, because ultimately (when it inevitably comes out) it compromises the image of the company, its reputation and eventually the bottom-line. It is dangerous for leaders to ignore the signs of a deteriorating business culture. Strong teams do not just appear out of nowhere; strong teams are a direct result of strong leadership. Let’s chat, share your views on gossip and the effects thereof – email your comments to voice@tametimes.co.za or tweet @NietoVoice.

DA shadow Transport Minister announced Democratic Alliance (DA) Parliamentary Leader Mmusi Maimane announced the appointment of Manny de Freitas as the party’s shadow Minister of Transport on 5 June. De Freitas comes with a wealth of experience in this field. He has served both on transport committees in the Gauteng Legislature and in the previous Parliament as the DA’s shadow Deputy Minister for Transport. “I am most excited to return to the Transport portfolio, as this is a job creator and vital in the economic development in South Africa,” de Freitas says. He believes there are a number of transport issues currently confronting South Africans. “Issues such as the toll road project where there are proposals to establish similar systems in other provinces are an example of issues which need to be dealt with,” he says, as well as “the unacceptable high number of road deaths.” The members of the DA’s shadow cabinet, according to Maimane, “will make pragmatic legislative proposals that will tackle South Africa’s problems head on, with a commitment to the creation of real jobs in South Africa.”

Still making a difference
Making A Difference (MAD) Domestic Watch continues to hold critically important meetings for domestic workers on crime prevention and how to pass on information without putting lives in danger. Domestic Watch has been involved with the SAPS for 13 years and Mondeor SAPS Precinct has been running Domestic Watch lessons for five years. Mondeor Community Policing Forum is supported by the SAPS as they form part of the section 18 of the Police Act. The domestic workers and gardeners who attend these lessons have become more alert and aware of their surroundings and
have benefitted from the knowledge gained. The meetings are held at the following venues: in Mondeor on the second Tuesday of the month at 10:00, in Kibler Park on the second Wednesday of the month at 10:00, in Mulbarton on the third Tuesday of the month at 10:00 and in Glenvista on the third Tuesday of the month at 14:00. Lessons last one hour. These lessons are run under the supervision of the Mondeor CPF. All donations are spent in strict compliance with the CPF requirement that the funds donated are reinvested in those attending; for example, for their annual certificate function and goodie bags. Penny Steyn, founder of MAD Domestic Watch says, “Thank you to Martin Barber (SOS Security) for his commitment to professionally presenting the vast number of important lessons. Thank you to Michelle Pelser for her extraordinary dedication to the Mondeor SAPS precinct community as well as Carrie Evans for her excellent management of the Kibler Park meetings. Thank you to the community for allowing their employees to attend and learn how to considerably impact on the crime challenge by being motivated and educated to impact on the crime challenge.” For further information or venue details contact Michelle Pelser on 084 292 9144 or e-mail cpfmondeorsapsarea@gmail. com.
Warm soup eases chill Mondeor CPF, Sector 2 patrollers, SOS, ER24 and community members assisted with handing out soup, bread and fruit to the homeless on 1 June in front of the dump on the corner of Columbine Avenue. “Two hundred people were fed and many came back for seconds and thirds. The soup and bread went a long way. The men and women were very grateful and wanted to know if we will be back next Sunday,” Mi-
found dead
The body of a Lesotho citizen was found in the veld along Bellairs Drive, Glenvista on 11 June. Sgt Andrew, Mondeor SAPS spokesperson said, “The person is suspected to be a homeless person who possibly died from the cold. An inquest docket is been investigated.” When tame TIMES arrived on scene, Mondeor SAPS, D&D Tactical, Glenvista Community Policing Forum members and paramedics were already there. It is believed that a homeless person discovered the body and alerted D&D Tactical, which in turn alerted authorities. The body was found in dense bush in the veld. The deceased was wearing blue overalls and it is estimated that he had been dead for two weeks.
Culpable homicide case opened
A black Honda motorbike, driven by an unknown man, collided with the rear of a marked police vehicle from Mondeor SAPS on 8 June on Klipriver Road, Mulbarton. “The driver of the motorbike was declared dead on scene. The two officers were taken to Mulbarton Hospital. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by IPID,” Sgt Andrew, Mondeor SAPS acting spokesperson said.
Signboard thief caught Sector 2 patrollers, CPF Mondeor and SOS Security recently apprehended a suspect due to a tipoff from a Mondeor resident. “The resident called us to let us know that a man with a wheelbarrow was sawing off an information sign on the Old Vereeniging Road near Constantia Road, Alan Manor,” Michelle Pelser said. The Sector 2 patrollers were mobilised and on arrival at the scene found the man with his wheelbarrow, the stolen poles and sign board, and the tools he had used to remove them. SOS Security arrived to assist and the resident confirmed that it was the same person she had seen sawing off the sign board. PR Councillor Peter Stewart was called to the scene. He requested a Provincial Road Agencies representative to come so that a theft charge could be opened.

Glenanda Primary is very proud of their principal, Graham King, as he ran his 10th Comrades Marathon and received his green number. He completed the downhill 90km in 10h08min. The 52-year-old principal told tame TIMES that running the Comrades for the tenth time was not something he set out to do. “I just wanted to run one uphill and one downhill after a friend got me involved in running,” King said. King enjoys the uphill run as he said it is easier for him and less strenuous on his body. When asked what he has enjoyed the most about running the Comrades, he replied, “the finish is always good, no matter what your time is.” King’s best Comrades Marathon time was 8:38. He said he will run two or more Comrades Marathon.
Experimenting with science A Science Expo was recently held by Waterstone College for their grade 7 learners. A great deal was learnt and the best projects are being entered into the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

Think green when Official Airport App launched hosting events Amy-Mae Campbell @Amzymaeq twitter.com
Justin Hawes, chairman of the Event Greening Forum, was the guest speaker for the Green Business Platform’s June meeting. Hawes spoke on various green practices that should be kept in mind, from eco-procurement down to waste minimisation, as well as what to look for when planning an event, covering topics such as venue and accommodation, food and beverage, exhibition and marketing. Below are some of Hawes’ tips: • Give preference to products that are not harmful to the environment e.g. low energy lighting. • Reduce consumption and recycle by not having temporary rigging points, which is a waste of trussing. Ideally there should be permanent points in venues. In the office, print on both sides of the paper and then recycle it. • Clear, fresh water consumption has risen at a rate double that of the population. Do not leave taps running. • Since 1970, global energy use has increased by 70%, and most of the electricity generated in SA comes from nonrenewable fossil fuels. Do not over test – this causes unnecessary wastage. Switch off lights. Use renewable energy - you can buy a renewable energy certificate and the money you pay for it will go to the
green provider e.g. windmill farm etc. • Climate change and pollution- Scan used City Power instead of generators at the 2010 PVA. • Preserve the local flora and fauna. When working in an outdoor venue, do not simply dig up the lawn, chop down plants or bulldoze. Consider the long-term repercussions of your actions. • Benefit the local community-stimulate the economy and encourage development. Use the local workforce. Buy locally produced goods. • Hawes explained that a series of questions should be asked when choosing a venue such as: does it have an environmental policy in place? Is the venue close to public transport? What chemical do they use and do they then recycle? • If you are hosting an outdoor event, use biodiesel generators, request energyefficient audiovisual and lighting equipment. Ensure the area is left the same or in a better condition. • The food menu should cater for food in season. Avoid food wastage - donate leftovers to a food bank. Buy in bulk and choose re-usable cutlery and crockery. If you would like to view Hawes’s full presentation please visit www.klipsa.org.za.

On 12 June, Airports Company South Africa launched its official Airports App. This free and user-friendly app was developed to assist travellers with navigating at airports, and allows passengers to make travel arrangements from their smart devices. The app is the first step towards an innovative, virtual airport service that will improve travel efficiency. “The objective of the app was to streamline and personalise the airport journey for passengers that are more empowered than ever before. We want to keep customers connected and we want to do it one step at a time. With this app we would like to connect the passenger to all information in our airport,” explained Airports Company South Africa Group Manager Customer Care, Claudia Ramsden. In addition to expediting airline and parking reservations, the app provides users with convenient tools to find shops and restaurants, airline, travel and traffic information, weather reports and customer care details. It will also assist passengers with planning alternative transport. Passengers travelling to Gauteng may synchronise with the Gautrain timetable as well. Currently, the app is downloadable on Apple IOS, Android and Blackberry devicesexcluding the Q and Z series. According to research conducted by Airports Company South Africa, 70% of the browsing traffic is on the IOS platform. The first phase of the app was therefore targeted at these user platforms. Further improvements and additions to the current app can be downloaded via update notifications. The app is already available for download. Airports Company South Africa partnered with the Digital Solutions Group, University of Johannesburg faculty members and students in the IT and engineering fields to present this new application. “The reality today is that the mobile device is something that will stay in aviation and will most probably become the predominant means of communicating with the passenger, but also giving a lot of the control back to the passenger. We actually control the journey; information around the journey and through that from checking yourself in, to following the process through the airport. In terms of the fast travel initiative, I think the South African aviation industry needs to embrace that we want to stay relevant in the world. The rest of the world is going self-service, and we want to make sure that we are not left behind. OR Tambo wants to maintain that standard,” concluded Andre Vermeulen, Acting Executive Airport Director.
SCREENSHOT: of the Airports App. Airports App features: • Flights: Search for flights can be done via a flight number or an advanced search option as well as checking in online. Once the flight is activated, any changes related to the flight will be visible to the passenger on their mobile device. • At the Airport: A list of the airlines that operate at the respective airports, as well as their contact numbers are provided. There is also a list of frequently asked information and contact details of the Customer Care department as well as the airport. Users will have access to a map of the airport developed in conjunction with TomTom and Micello Indoor Maps. This allows the passenger to search for, and be routed to, a location at the airport. Parking options and other information such as a parking cost calculator are also available. Weather updates of conditions at the airport are sent through on an hourly basis. • Shop and Dine: A selection of restaurants and shops to choose from can be searched either by category, terminal or name. A currency calculator is also available. • To and From the Airport: Traffic updates mean travellers can plan their trip to the airport more effectively. Also, there are listings and contact details of the car rental companies, Gautrain, taxis, and shuttle services. For more information about Airports Company South Africa’s Airports App, visit www.airports.co.za or phone the Customer Care line on +27 086 727 7888. Cheetah has a vision
Vuyisile ‘Cheetah’ Colossa signed a contract with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) which is the biggest MMA promoter in the world on 12 June at Gold Reef City. This was a double celebration as Cheetah’s brainchild, IMPI Fighting Championship, was launched the same day. Colossa is the CEO of IMPI Fighting Championship, which is a premier mixed martial arts combat sport fight league, which combines techniques from various martial arts disciplines including Boxing, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Judo, Sambo, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Taekwondo, Savate, San-shou, and Kickboxing. This innovative initiative is sure to provide thrilling entertainment. “IMPI Fighting Championship is an international event to empower youth and to introduce this sport to those that have not had the opportunity to partake. As the South African World Champion Cheetah said, “God works in mysterious ways. He is the first black South African to fight in the highest level of the Martial Arts,” Reginald Colossa, IPIM’s spokesperson said. Cheetah left for Hong Kong seven years ago to gain experience in the sport and events. He has hosted the White Collar MMA Championship since 2011 and also teaches bankers, doctors and white collar professionals how to fight. Cheetah met his coach, Andre Cason, at a gym in Hong Kong and the two are now like brothers. “I feel like I have known him

OFF THE PITCH
The Captain
It is great news to hear that Cricket South Africa has appointed Hashim Amla as the new Proteas Captain. I was quite surprised to hear this news, as I had mentioned previously that I was sure that AB De Villiers would By Craig Norris be the obvious choice, with Faf Du Plessis being appointed as the Vice-Captain for South Africa. As per media statements in the past months, Amla would have seemed not to be interested in leading his country. However, I am sure that he will do a great job, as long as he gets the support from all the players and management in the Protea Camp. Amla is no stranger to leading a team, as he has always been at the helm, in terms of his early years as a captain of his school and provincial teams. The responsibility of being captain of your country, however, is totally different and it throws out plenty of curve balls at you. It is not a case of just putting on the national blazer and cap while standing on the pitch and spinning the coin before a test match. He will, as Graeme Smith experienced in his time, need all the help possible in not only guiding the team on the field, but also facing the national media across the world. There will be good times and there will be bad times in terms of results achieved; and as a captain you are ultimately accountable for all the decision-making. The off-field responsibilities of a captain in the modern game are massive and include facing the media at after- match conferences and team promotions. Many a Test player has folded under this type of pressure after a bad day on the field. I would like to think that Amla has all the qualities that a skipper needs to overcome all the hurdles that lie ahead. He is quite laid-back and has never shown any emotions while piling on the runs for South Africa. Hopefully this calmness will remain and that Amla will be the skipper that takes the Proteas back to the top of the rankings. Sri Lanka will be the first task and then Zimbabwe, with the West Indies in the New Year.
