Over a timespan of three days – 5 to 7 December Alberton will be entertained by some of the best in the local music industry at Alberton Rugby Club. Aimed at involving the entire community, the festival will include foodstalls, flea- and crafters market stands, motor shows, beer gardens, food stalls and a theme park for the children to be entertained. Alberton Day and Music Festival will kick off on the Friday with a rock show and DJ’s. Saturday will be filled with activities for everyone with top South African musicians taking the stage. Resident left to clean sewage out of yard

A Glenvista resident, who stays in Kamstra Street, is fed up with continuously having to clear sewage out of his yard. He told tame TIMES that his sewerage pipe often becomes blocked and sewage then spills into his yard. He added that Clr Paul Smit has been helpful in persuading Council (City of Joburg) to unblock the drain; however, Council never cleans up the mess that is left on his premises. “Clr Smit has told me that Council does not have money to clean up the sewage.” The resident said that the pipe becomes blocked every second or third month. Clr Smit said,”Every time the resident asks for a cleanup I have requested JW to followup. To my knowledge this has been done, but the resident raises a valid point: why do we have to request that it be cleaned up - why is it not automatically done? Why is this pipe continuously blocking up and what plan of action does Joburg Water have in place to stop this from happening again? As far as finances go, most departments are struggling on budgets that are inadequate and maybe the Mayor and MMC for finance and infustructure should comment on why their finances are in such bad shape. tame TIMES has requested comment from Joburg Water. Toe ek nog ‘n “flower child” was, besluit ‘n paar van ons om ‘n partytjie by te woon in die stad. Ek en my ou Gysie was toe nog net vriende, daar was nog nie eers ‘n teken van ogies maak nie. So laai ‘n vriend ons almal op met sy Kewer – en ons pak daardie motortjie soos net studente kan! By die venster sit my goeie vriendin Lalla. Ons maak al die vensters oop vir ‘n bietjie vars lug en meer spasie. Gysie het reeds by die huis begin opwarm en sit heel tevrede agter in die motor. Stop by ‘n stopstraat, hier staan ‘n hond so hoog soos ‘n ponie en kyk vir Lalla in die gesig. Ewe braaf leun Gysie oor, kyk die hond stip in die oë en haak af: “le woef!”, kompleet met ‘n Franse aksent. By die partytjie aangekom, kyk ons die talent uit. Lalla sien hoe Gysie ‘n meisietjie so skaperig aankyk en gaan maak kennis, met die doel om hulle dan later aan mekaar voor te stel. Vol selfvertroue stap Gysie toe na die groep toe sodat Lalla haar ding kan doen. “Het jy vir haar gesê ek kan Frans praat?” vra hy vir Lalla. Die jonge dame hoor dit toe en vra opgewonde dat Gys iets moet sê in Frans. “Le hello,” sê die stomme man heel in sy skik – en ons skater. Dit is seker nie nodig om te noem dat die meisie nie vreeslik beïndruk was nie. Jare later lag ek en my Gysie steeds oor die aand wat hy sy naam so met ‘n plank geslaan het. En dit verruil ek vir niks. Die, gesels, die onthou, die lag!

Who came up with the idea of one-way streets? What were our town planners thinking? It does not make sense for drivers who are accustomed to negotiating two-way streets to have to adjust their entire motoring mindset mid-journey to cope with one-ways. Every one-way street in our city is simply an accident waiting to happen. Without incriminating myself, I would like to say that probably just about everyone with a driver’s licence in Gauteng has been the wrong way down a one-way street at least once. Also, one-way streets are nightmare for the navigationally challenged, confusing even

the most intelligent of GPS systems at times, wasting petrol and encouraging road rage. The Johannesburg CBD is a prime example of a one-way-infested maze that needs urgent revamping. If you take a wrong turn just once, you can spend half an hour circling a block trying to reach a destination that you can see but are never able to reach in a car. Making a mockery of democracy Felicity Clarke writes:

Last Thursday’s Parliamentary shenanigans made a mockery of South Africa’s hard-won freedoms. When one thinks about the price South Africans paid for freedom and democracy, when one considers the miracle that was the 1994 election, when one weighs up the service delivery gap that keeps millions unemployed and in poverty – last Thursday’s National Assembly sitting, during which a report absolving President Zuma from paying back the Nkandla money was passed - was a tragedy. Parliament exists to represent the people and to act as a service delivery watchdog. Debate, therefore, is a necessity, because the people must have their say; and the watchdog must be able to bite anyone trying to waste the people’s money.

Don’t leave keys in ignition

Moffatview SAPS would like to warn members of the public to remember not to leave their car-keys in the ignition when opening or closing the gate, as there have many carjackings in the Moffatview policing area. Members of the public are also urged to be alert and to check if anyone is following them while they are driving.

Leopard tortoise found in South Hills Power utility City Power made a major breakthrough in the fight against cable theft last Friday when it arrested four suspects who confessed to be the masterminds behind the theft of the electricity cable in Eikenhof that led to widespread water outages in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni and the West Rand two months ago.

The water shortage occurred as a result of theft of electricity cables needed for the reservoirs to pump water. The suspects were arrested by City Power Investigative Unit with 120 kilograms worth of copper valued at R8 435. The apprehension of the suspects follows a tip-off from the scrap dealer who alerted City Power about the suspicious goods that the suspects were selling. Upon being questioned, the suspects confessed that they were behind the theft of the electricity cable in Eikenhof that resulted in widespread water outages in September. They conceded that they are part of a syndicate that is actively involved in the theft of electricity cables and copper and took City Power investigators to cable theft hot spots that they have targeted. The suspects also showed the investigators the site where they strip the cables and also identified and fingered City Power contractor employees who provide them with information on vulnerable areas and equipment they should target.

The employees identified by the suspects were also arrested, bringing to a total of eight those who have been locked up at the Booysens Police Station. The suspects and their accomplices will appear in court soon on charges of theft and damage to property. The South African Police Services and City Power are on a manhunt for other members of the syndicate who are at large. Managing Director of City Power Sicelo Xulu welcomed the arrest and said this major bust is indicative of how partnership between communities, City Power, law enforcement agencies such as the South African Police Services (SAPS), the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) can yield positive results in the fight against cable theft. “The water cuts that affected communities in Pretoria and Johannesburg due to cable theft is a grim and chilling reminder of how the scourge of cable theft can impact negatively on communities and businesses if it remains unchecked. We appeal to our communities to work with us to rid ourselves of the menace of cable theft as it poses a national security threat and robs us of much needed jobs,” said Xulu. Cable theft causes our economy to haemorrhage over R5 billion annually. “This lost revenue is money that could be invested to grow the economy and generate employment opportunities. Small and medium sized businesses are the hardest hit by unplanned power outages and in many instances many of them have to shed jobs in order to survive the negative impact of lost revenue sustained during unplanned outages by criminally induced actions,” said Xulu. He said the Association of Electricity Municipalities of Southern Africa (AMEU), the industry body in which he was elected President, is lobbying government to have cable theft classified as economic sabotage.

Members of the Agriculture and Rural Development received information on 12 November from members of the South Hills community that one of the residents was in possession of a Leopard Tortoise and it was being kept in the house. Moffatview SAPS spokeswoman Cst Rebecca Bila said, “The tortoise was confiscated and taken to a Rehabilitation Centre and a fine was issued.”

SAPS saves Makro millions A covert team from the South African Police Service’s Commercial and Financial Crime Intelligence Unit made a successful arrest minutes before the Makro store in Alberton was to be defrauded of more than R7 million. The police scouted the area around the store on Monday 10 November and identified a car with two suspicious-looking occupants. Acting on information received, the team from Alberton SAPS, Crime Intelligence and the West Rand Organised Crime Unit, as well as their colleagues from the Johannesburg Metro Police, disrupted the transaction in the making. Once satisfied that the occupants of the car were the targeted suspects, a search was conducted. They had found a laptop connected to an inverter and internet router, suspected to be linked to Makro’s computer systems. 284 Makro gift vouchers were also found, which the suspects were to load with approximately R25 000 each. The duo appeared in the Johannesburg Commercial Crime Court on 12 November and the case was postponed to 20 November for bail application.

Swallows dagga, coughs it out, gets arrested Two suspects were arrested on 10 November by SAPS Technical Response Team (TRT) for possession of dagga. The members were driving along Verona Street, Rosettenville when they spotted a white sedan parked there. Two unknown males were sitting outside on the bench. The members asked to search them. Cst Ndlovu found dagga on one of the males; he then searched the other male, and noticed that he was swallowing something. The member asked what was he swallowing, but the suspect could not talk, so he coughed up the substance - which turned out to be dagga - and ran away. The members gave chase and apprehended him in High Street. The suspect was carrying a plastic bag with seven packets and nine small bags of dagga. The two suspects were arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS.

N12 driver case postponed again The case against Isaac Maruding, aged 44, who is on trial for three counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving, was postponed again on12 November until 23 January 2015 for three key reasons. Maruding’s legal representative Advocate Mokhele Salemane has left the case, leaving the accused without legal help. Also, Magistrate Samuel Hlubi has decided that the matter would be better heard in a regional court rather than a district court. Lastly, the new date coincides with the original court date set for the case. The accused has been reminded of his bail conditions and warned that if he breaks any of them, he will be arrested and detained until the court date. He has been ordered to appear before the court at 8:30 on 23 January to avoid further prosecution.

Pikitup would like to remind the citizens of Joburg again this year not to give out Christmas gifts to waste removal staff, especially during the festive season. “Pikitup employees are forbidden from soliciting Christmas gifts from members of the public, as this goes against company policy for staff to take part in this tradition,” said Suren Maharaj, acting Managing Director at Pikitup.
