Tough as nails
The second annual EMS Fire Fighter Challenge, hosted by The Glen Shopping Centre, Netcare and Trauma Society South Africa (TSSA), took place on Saturday and displayed just how tough, brave and courageous emergency and medical workers are. The two-part competition, EMS Challenge and Rescue Challenge, had both men and women competing in an exact duplicate of the International Fire Fighter Challenge. The EMS Challenge had two categories - individual, which Nefuri Engel, a paramedic student at University of Johannesburg won in a time of 2 minutes 38 seconds and the team challenge - which was won by Station 33. The gruelling EMS challenge saw fire fighters wearing the full turnout Bunker gear, walking up five flights of stairs carrying a shoulder pack, then hoisting a load up the five floors by rope, proceeding down the stairs and hammering a steel cylinder till it moved to the designated place. Once that was completed, they had to

run around beacons, drag a hose 20 metres, exit through swing doors and then hit a target with the water from the hose. The last leg of the course was to pull an 80kg dummy 30 metres to the finish line. The American record for this course is 1 minute 17 seconds while the South African record is 1 min 57 seconds. The Rescue Challenge was a team event and Station 33 were once again the fastest team, rescuing Randy through a tunnel. The highlight of the day had to be Buddy the rescue dog abseiling down the scaffolding with his owner Joe Adlam and showing that it is not only the EMS workers that are heroes but dogs as well. Adlam and Buddy are part of the South African chaplaincy. Well done to the 14 teams that competed, as well as all the individuals. tame TIMES salute you and is keen to see the challenge against the Springbok rugby team that was mentioned. Learners have “a day at the races” Turffontein Racecourse kicked off the countdown to the 10th edition of the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile (PEPCM) in partnership with Racing. It’s A Rush by hosting a successful educational afternoon last Wednesday. Learners from the Fortune Kunene Primary After Care all had a turn to ride a pony, have their faces painted and meet PEPCM celebrities Sarah-Kate Scott (Mrs South Africa), Clive Maistry (Mr SA finalist), Hayley Owen (actress) and Fiona Nay (actress). Scott was the bravest of them all, climbing on a horse. According to Bob Yearham, Peermont COO for Gaming, “Peermont donates a sizeable amount annually through ongoing Corporate Social Investment and Responsibility projects, with a core focus on education, community upliftment, youth and entrepreneurial development. The Charity Mile is a unique event that aligns with our core business philosophies, bringing hospitality, gaming and famous people together in aid of those less fortunate.” Phumelela Gaming’s National Marketing Manager, Michael Varney, who helped dish up burgers and hotdogs to the learners, said: “We are extremely excited for this

Crazy times we live in
As the news hit of last week’s horrible N12 accident, concerned phone calls started to stream in and out. I phoned my father to see where he was; my colleague’s sister phoned her to see if she was okay and my friends, who know my office is situated in Alberton, phoned to see if I was okay. Thank God we were all fine. I am sure there were many more phone calls like these. My deepest sympathies go to the families of the four people who passed on and those who were injured. May God’s healing hand touch these families. What makes this story even more dismal is that the driver already has previous convictions: culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving. Many people have the opinion that newspapers sensationalise news; however, in this situation the sensation was already there - the sensation was purely the hard facts. We are living in crazy times. How can a company hire a driver who has two convictions of that kind (relating to driving) to drive not just a car but a heavy goods vehicle? To add to the crazy week of news, we have Mikey Schultz in the headlines, just out of the blue - appearing at the Oscar trial, owing money to SARS and then for other crime sprees he has allegedly been on. He will be appearing in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, so maybe Oscar should go to his court case. The last has to be my best: the documentary that he and his fellow killers have appeared in, re-enacting the Kebble murder. In my opinion, it all makes sense - the documentary needs publicity as it launches on 24 October and now all you see is Schultz in the headlines and the warped antics surrounding him. Obviously everyone will want to watch the movie now. Why did the killers agree to make the movie? Well, all three of them do owe SARS money and I am sure the movie is going to bring in a lot of revenue. That said, it makes me more grateful for my simple little life. I often think of what Schultz’s mother, children and wife think and experience while he is in the headlines. Are they proud because of his infamous name in the South, and all over, or are their hearts broken? Whatever the family is going through, my thoughts and prayers are with them.

Murderer hands himself to SAPS A male suspect handed himself over at Johannesburg Central Police Station on 12 October for the murder of Marcus Tema, a 45-year-old man who was believed to be the caretaker of Malusi Primary School in Mulbarton, Johannesburg South. The murder took place at the school in The Broads Street, Mulbarton. Dora Mahlangu, the deceased’s girlfriend, came home on Saturday 11 October at 18:30 from a funeral in Mpumalanga, only to find Tema lying face up with three pillow-cases on his face and his throat slit. There was a knife in his left hand and all his clothes had been thrown out of the drawers. The suspect appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on 13 October.

N12 crash: driver has previous convictions
Stephanie Conradie
stephanie.conradie@tametimes.co.za
On 14 October, tragedy struck Alberton when a truck from Benusi Cargo Carriers crashed into multiple vehicles on the N12 East near Voortrekker Road. 48 cars were involved in the accident, which was described as a horror crash. Two people died on the scene and two more were confirmed dead in hospital, bringing the total death toll to 4 people. Critically injured patients urgently requiring advanced life support were airlifted by medical helicopter to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for further medical treatment. The remaining patients were treated for their injuries and transported to nearby hospitals. The driver of the truck, which was carrying building material from Potchefstroom to Germiston, told local authorities that his brakes had failed, causing him to collide with multiple vehicles. Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Dr Ismail Vadi visited the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where three of the critically injured victims from the horrific crash are being treated. Dr. Liezel Taylor, who was on duty when the crash took place, told the media that one of the patients had to undergo three operations within the first 24 hours after the crash and was on a ventilator after sustaining injuries to the chest, heart and lungs. Another patient was admitted with heavy bleeding on the head and suffered internal bleeding to the liver and chest - the patient had undergone two operations since being admitted shortly after the crash. The third patient had suffered fractures to
the arm and was expected to undergo brain scans, but he was in a stable condition and alert. “This was one of the worst accidents in our province,” Dr Vadi said. “This cannot be described as an accident, it was a horrible crash,” he said. Dr Vadi continued to say that the Roads and Transport Department will now push their road safety campaign even harder. “Truck overloading and mechanical problems are a major problem in the private sector and we will toughen up on the freight industry,” he said during a media briefing. The driver appeared at Palm Ridge Court on Thursday on four counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving. State Prosecutor John Ntuli brought to light the fact that the driver has previous convictions: culpable homicide in 1999, and reckless and negligent driving in 1997. The 44-year-old accused was arrested in Potchefstroom on Wednesday. The lawyers representing the driver, Gerhard Louw and Deon van Staden, told the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court that they had not received instruction to proceed with the case after his appearance on Thursday, and withdrew. The case has been postponed until 22 October and the accused now has time to present his bail application and apply for legal aid representation. Magistrate Hlubi said that the State is expected to compile all neccessary information for the bail application to proceed. The accused will remain in custody. The City of Ekurhuleni is calling on truck owners with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500
MAIN: TRAGIC: More than 40 cars were involved in the horror crash. INSET: HIDING: The accused in court kg and more to visit its testing stations for free vehicle assessment. This campaign is open for the entire month of October to mark National Transport Month. The participating testing stations include those in Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Germiston, Boksburg and Kempton Park. The free testing campaign seeks to curb fatal road accidents that occur as a result of unroadworthy vehicles. Owners of taxis and buses are also encouraged to do the test, which involves the checking of tyres, brakes, hand-brakes, steering mechanisms and the general condition of vehicles. The MMC for Transport, Cllr Thumbu Mahlangu, encourages all public transport operators to visit the City’s designated testing stations in order to be informed about the roadworthy status of their vehicles so
that corrective measures can be taken, and so that they can ultimately prevent deadly accidents. Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr. Mondi Gungubele also commented on the crash, saying: “I sincerely hope that the trucking companies will accept our gesture of free assessment for their vehicles with the mass of 3 500kg and above. This is our attempt to minimise accidents like the one - we are still trying to recover from which happened in Alberton on Tuesday. Together we can minimise accidents and loss of life on our roads.”

Stout effort from Clr Paul Smit
20 years of hope and transformation
Neville A. Peters writes:
Just a short note of thanks to Clr Paul Smit for his stout effort in solving my COJ billing problem. It is greatly appreciated. Where it previously took me two weeks to get the information required, he solved it within days. We as residents are fortunate to have such a dedicated councillor who will go the extra mile for the residents in the ward. Once again, my gratitude and thanks.

Bonnie Haack has been serving at Cotlands for the past 20 years. She started in 1994 as the principal of the preschool and is now the Chief Human Resources Officer. Just as her job title has changed, so have Cotlands’ objectives. Founded in 1936, Cotlands was originally created as a sanctuary for abandoned babies. It all started one night when a baby was left on the doorstep of Matron Dorothy Reece’s home in Mayfair, Johannesburg. She decided to take the infant in and care
for it and so Cotlands was born out of this single act of kindness. Due to the rise of HIV in babies, another focus area was added and a hospice was formed in order for the babies to die in a dignified place. Cotlands started administering anti-retroviral drugs to the affected babies and over the years the death toll has come to a complete halt a direct result of the great work done by Cotlands. The focus of Cotlands then changed to one of early childhood development and the organization addressed the education and social crisis by establishing early learning playgroups and toy libraries in poor communities to serve vulnerable children from birth to six years.

Happy Diwali Southern Suburbs Hindu Cultural Society (SSHCS) wishes the Hindu community an Enlightened Diwali and a Joyful New Year.
Community
How have you experienced the transformation of Cotlands? The transformation of Cotlands has reinforced a sense of hope, as it has maintained its relevance to the community of South Africa. Cotlands now works to ensure opportunity by creating possibilities for the young children in this country to develop their potential through play-based early learning. I am proud to be a part of this organization. What makes you happiest when looking back on your years at Cotlands? I’m really chuffed about the way the non-profit organization has evolved over the years from a “charity” - which sometimes has disempowering connotations, with an “ag shame” factor - into a professional organization that is considered a thought leader in the industry. We have engineered programmes that protect and care for children today while cultivating creative thinking that will empower them for years to come. I am also pleased about how we have been able to build capacity in the work-force countrywide by training staff to qualify as Early Childhood Development practitioners. They will be qualifying in February 2015 through the Teachers Learning Centre in the South. What is your fondest memory? My fondest memory involves two people, a young man and a young woman, who took volunteering to a new level. They became two of the best “workers” in the organization. Their overall attitude, willingness to learn and to do anything is an inspiration. Small wonder, then, that they were obvious choices for vacant positions and are both permanently employed at Cotlands. In addition, we get amazingly gifted volunteers from Europe and Australia who give their hearts and souls to this organization in a foreign country. They commit to Cotlands for a year and dedicate every effort to assisting us to achieve our goals.
A FRESH APPROACH TO LOCAL NEWS & CHARITY
What are you aiming for in the next few years? To be able to coach and mentor someone to take over from me to build and retain key talent in the organization to ensure that the work continues at the level which we have come to expect Cotlands’ transformation has been very successful - what do you attribute this to? The dedicated staff and a strong belief that we are heading in the right direction

What keeps you at Cotlands? I have enjoyed working in such a dynamic environment. Year after year, I was challenged to achieve new and different things. It was very exciting to be a part of the changes at Cotlands over the years, developing the brand and ensuring a quality service. What is your greatest wish for Cotlands? That all South Africans acknowledge and advocate the value of play in early learning by taking an active part and getting involved as a willing partner to resolve the education crisis in the country. Cotlands inspires South Africa to participate actively in creating a society that respects children and ensures safe places for them to play, learn and grow.

They proceeded to the scene, went to the back of the passage, found a couple of males and asked to search them. Cst Maseko searched all the males and found 33 dagga packs on one of them, in his right trouser pocket.
The following 69 arrests were made by Booysens SAPS between 6 and 12 October:

2.True North Road functions as a main Class 3 mobility route (M68) and therefore the installation of speed humps is not supported as per the CoJ Traffic Calming Policy. Class 3 roads form the link between the primary road network and roads within residential and other land use areas. Their main function is to distribute traffic between the various land uses and are designed to carry high traffic volumes and also to accommodate public transport. For that reason, traffic calming cannot be supported on Class 3 routes. The speeding along this road is caused by illegal driver behaviour and therefore the most suitable solution would be a permanent speed law enforcement (camera) with education.

Honey ice-cream sandwich with pistachio butter.
DESSERT: BANDITO’S HONEY ICE-CREAM SANDWICH WITH PISTACHIO BUTTER Pistachio Butter Place nuts on a roasting pan with one tablespoon of oil and a pinch of salt. Roast until fragrant and golden brown. Remove from the oven and place into a food processor with the honey and a pinch of salt. Blitz and scrape the sides until the mixture comes together. While blending, pour in the rest of the oil and blend until smooth.
Ice-cream 600 ml fresh cream 1/3 cup honey 4 egg yolks 1/3 cup caster sugar 1 vanilla pod, seeded Sandwiches 1 pkt Bandito’s Tortillas 2 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp cinnamon
Ice-cream Mix the cream, vanilla and honey in a saucepan, heat to just before it begins to boil, and then take it off the heat. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together. Temper the mixture and put back on the heat, stirring constantly until mixture coats the back of the spoon. Strain into a freezer-friendly dish and freeze for three hours. Then transfer the mixture into a bowl and whisk with an electric beater until smooth. Cover and re-freeze for approximately six hours. To assemble Mix the cinnamon and icing sugar together, then sprinkle on to a counter top. Place the Bandito’s Tortillas on top of the mixture. Using a rolling pin, roll across the Bandito’s Tortillas to embed the mixture flavour into one side of the Bandito’s Tortillas. Using a round cookie cutter, cut three rounds per person and bake at 160º C until golden brown. Remove from oven and cool. Once cool, layer the Bandito’s Tortillas with the honey ice-cream and finish off with the pistachio nut butter.

Preparation To make the chicken marinade, whisk the buttermilk, beer, salt and pepper together in a bowl, add your chicken breasts, cover and refrigerate for two hours. Once your chicken breasts are well marinated, place three clean bowls on the counter. In the first bowl, crack and whisk the eggs. Place the flour, salt and pepper in the second bowl. In the final bowl, add the crushed Bandito’s Salted Nachos and grated parmesan. Remove the chicken breasts from the marinade, let the excess drip off. Coat one chicken breast at a time with the seasoned flour, making sure both sides are evenly coated. Tap off the excess. Dip the same flour-coated chicken breast in the egg mixture, again draining off any excess, and then press both sides of the chicken breast into the crushed nachos and Parmesan crumbs. Repeat with the rest of the chicken breasts. Pre-heat the peanut oil in a deep pan. Once hot, place the chicken breasts in the skillet and fry them until golden brown on each side or until cooked through. Fry the chicken breasts in batches and drain on a paper towel until completely cool. Once cooled, set the chicken on a cutting board and using a 1¼ inch round cookie cutter, stamp out 24 rounds from the chicken breasts. Place them on a baking sheet. To Assemble Pre-heat oven to 180º C. Cut a slice of buffalo mozzarella and place on one side of the lollipop-shaped chicken breast and top with a dollop of Bandito’s Mild Salsa. Bake in the oven for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the buffalo mozzarella begins to melt. Insert the bamboo skewer and serve.

Porcupine and hedgehog spotting Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za
Last week tame TIMES received a phone call from a resident who stays in Dungarvan Avenue, Winchester Hills, saying she had spotted a massive porcupine in her garden in the early hours of the morning. Although she often finds porcupine quills in her garden, she said, this was the first time she had actually seen the animal. This is not the first spotting of a porcupine in the area, however. The Mondeor CPF Sector 2 patrollers often seet them while patrolling at night. Just this last Wednesday night, a small hedgehog was found and taken back to the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, patroller Shane Stander told tame TIMES. Morné Brits, chairman of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association (KNRA) explained, “There are many porcupine in the Nature Reserve and possibly in other untransformed/”natural” pieces of veld, such as the koppies around Winchester Hills, Mondeor and Ridgeway. With no remaining large predators of fully grown porcupine in the area, you would expect their numbers to increase and then expand into areas that are not considered to be their natural habitat, such as urban gardens.” He went on to say that for many years now KNRA has recorded porcupines visiting the gardens of the properties bordering the R e s e r v e , feasting on garden plants and often on dog pellets left in bowls. “From a conservation perspective, it is interesting that yet another animal species is beginning to adapt to the man-made environment; other mammals that have led the way locally are yellow mongoose and

dassie, as well as a few sporadic ventures from animals such as scrub hare, cane rats, hedgehogs and even small spotted genet,” Brits said. “It begs the question of how connected the various natural areas are; the porcupine in Dungarven Ave, for example, only needs to cross one not-sobusy road to get to the Reserve – the rest is still connected through stream courses and the Eskom power line servitude.” Brits brought up the controversial question of how the local residents will adapt to this “invasion” by naturally occurring animals. Many residents have found dassies to be pests, with tame TIMES reporting on the destruction they cause to residents’ gardens and ceilings. “Hopefully we will have enough broad-minded residents that are willing to accommodate these animals in their gardens,” Brits concluded. If you do spot a porcupine and there is an imminent threat to its safety (if it is being harassed by dogs, is trying to cross a busy road or is trapped in a manmade structure) or if it has been injured and requires veterinary help, please contact the SPCA or Free Me. Otherwise, it is advised that you let the animal be, as it should find its way back from where it came. KNRA has welcomed residents contacting them for advice where people are experiencing problems with wildlife.

SANRAL taking care of the
environment SANRAL has a two-pronged approach, explains Environmental Manager Mpati Makoa.
The law requires SANRAL to comply with a range of measures to protect the environment and conserve natural resources, but the agency regards these as a minimum requirement.
We need to comply with the law, but we have our own, internally-driven programmes based on our core values, one of which is to take Care over what we do. We also borrow from international standards such as ISO 14001 which specifies the requirements of an environmental management system (EMS) for small to large organisations and is based on the Plan-Check-Do-Review-Improve cycle, calls for ‘continual improvement’ as a fundamental principle.
As a member of the World Road Association, SANRAL also benefits from participation in international environmental debate and keeps pace with latest developments.
its own research in collaboration with academic and other institutions, consults with authorities to improve regulatory processes and participates in local and international forums and events. SANRAL and other key industry stakeholders are currently investigating and looking to adapt ‘Greenroads’ for use as an indicator for sustainable practices in South Africa’s road systems. This enables SANRAL to comfortably comply with legislative requirements, and to contribute to wider environmental and natural resource conservation issues, says Makoa.
SANRAL’s environmental management practices are monitored by its Risk In line with the “continual improvement” imperative, SANRAL undertakes Cluster which reports to the Board. Research Much of SANRAL’s research is aimed at reducing its carbon footprint. Initiatives include: • Replacing tar with asphalt, which is bitumen-based and more environmentally friendly. • Recycling of road construction materials. Aggregate, bitumen and asphalt dug up from old roads is reworked and used when they are upgraded, reducing the need to transport new materials and for quarrying, which can often adversely affect the environment. • Using solar panels and micro wind turbines to power variable messaging signs alerting road users to problems ahead.
• Qualification in Journalism • At least 3 years experience • Computer Literate • Excellent written and spoken communication skills • Social media literate • Interest in digital media • Eye for detail (subbing skills) • Good research skills • Passionate about news • Driver’s licence and own vehicle mandatory • Inquiring/curious • Must be familiar with Bedfordview • Check for accuracy of facts and correct spelling and grammar • Willing to work over-time
PLEASE SEND CV TO LIZE@ta metimes .co.za OR FAX 086 241 5648.
Research extends beyond roads to adjacent reserve areas where SANRAL needs to establish the most sustainable way to conserve sensitive or threatened vegetation species. An example is collaboration between SANRAL and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on research to establish guidelines for conservation of the Fynbos Biome along the N2 road in the Eastern Cape. Regulatory compliance SANRAL’s construction work is subject to government approval based on environmental impact assessment studies and the granting of permits to undertake specific activities. A number of approvals and permits are often required from different departments ranging from environmental affairs to water and forestry, agriculture and mineral resources, and from agencies, such as the SA Heritage Resources Agency.
working with government departments to develop a more integrated approach to permitting and to optimise the process, says Makoa. Skills development With its eye on the future, SANRAL has partnered with the Department of Environmental Affairs to place two interns in the agency’s environment division under the Groen Sebenza Jobs Fund Partnership Project.
A former trainee who was sponsored by SANRAL to take her honours SANRAL needs to start specific projects at specific times, and the permitting process is a critical factor in its timing. The agency is therefore degree is now working in the agency’s environment division.

Lexton Academy - the first remedial high school in the South Applications for Grades 8 and 9 are now open for 2015 at Lexton Academy ADHD and Remedial High School and Tutorial Centre, a new school that will be situated in New Redruth, Alberton. Gavin Palmer, founder of Lexton Academy, saw a massive increase in the need for small classes focussing on remedial ADHD learners. “There is no high school per se in the south catering for these children and the ones that are close by are very full,” Palmer told tame TIMES. He went on to explain that nearly 60% of Grade 7 learners, despite being fully eligible to attend high school, are not ready for mainstream studies. Under normal circumstances, after enrolling in a mainstream high school, these students learn that they must take remedial courses in English or Maths. The aim is to fill this gap and make the transformation that much easier for the learners. The school will follow the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) CAPS syllabus and will have 15 learners per class. Palmer explained, “We will focus on one-on-one learner attention which can’t be given in a normal class. We will be working on teaching the content, then building the foundation for exams and testing. This will build confidence in the learners. We will also be teaching at a slower pace to allow for better understanding for the learners.” Palmer added, “We believe in a stigma-

free learning environment where the learners can be themselves and can strive for their own excellence.” The subjects offered for Grades 8 and 9 are: English, Afrikaans, Mathematics, Economics and Management Sciences, Life Orientation, Technology/Computers, Arts and Culture, Natural Science and Biology, Social Science (Geography, History). Currently there are five educators who will teach next year. The staff count will grow as each phase comes in, and school uniforms will be worn. “This is to teach self pride in appearance and is a huge part of personal and school discipline,” Palmer said. All extramurals and sport activities will be done through clubs and outside coaching. The school will also be providing aftercare at an additional cost to parents. If you would like to apply for admission for your child or would like more information, please mail admin@lexton. co.za or contact Gavin Palmer on 078 329 9732 or visit www.lexton.co.za.

PETS FEATURE
As warmer weather heralds the start of summer, animal-lovers know that fireworks season is not far off. Starting with Diwali in October and lasting right through to New Year, the festive season is also fireworks season. For people, fireworks are a fun way to celebrate holidays and balmy evenings outdoors, but it is a very different story for animals. All animals, including your beloved pets, have
a more acute sense of hearing than humans do, so every pop and bang may seem like an explosion to them, especially as they do not understand what is going on. It is no wonder that terrified pets will do just about anything to escape from fireworks or that the Johannesburg SPCA routinely sees a spike in admissions immediately after a night of celebration. While fireworks are legal in South Africa, strict by-laws govern their usage. The JSPCA therefore encourages Joburg residents to familiarise themselves with the by-laws and to report any infringements to the SAPS. More specifically, the by-laws are clear about the fact that “no person may light or ignite fireworks in any place where animals are present” and that “no person may allow a minor under his or her control to use, light or ignite fireworks in contravention (of the by-laws).” In addition, fireworks may only be used in certain places with prior and written permission. These places include the interiors of buildings, agricultural holdings, public spaces, schools, hospitals and old age homes.

The JSPCA suggests that animal lovers adopt the following measures to minimise distress on nights when fireworks are in use: Keep pets indoors and try to ensure that they have human companionship; If possible, close all windows, curtains and doors to block out the flashes of light and loud noises; Turn on the radio or TV to muffle the sound of the fireworks and choose a programme that does not feature loud music or startling sounds; Provide toys, treats or other distractions to help keep pets occupied; Speak to a vet about the medication and supplements available to manage anxiety caused by loud noises; Keep calm and do not fuss if pets become distressed, as this will only aggravate their anxiety; Ensure your pets are micro-chipped so that they can be traced if they do manage to get out and run away. In case of an emergency during fireworks season, residents can contact the City of Joburg’s Emergency Connect line on 011 375 5911 or can call the nationwide emergency response service on 10111. The JSPCA’s 24-hour Duty Inspector can be reached on 083 604 1172 and a staff member is on standby at all times to accept strays at the
JSPCA Kennels in Reuven. If you have lost a pet, please contact our Lost and Found Department on 011 681 3600 during office hours to report him or her missing. You should also phone all the vets in your area and the surrounding SPCAs, as you pet may have been taken to one of them.

Lucky Mohale (Maxed Elite) and Deriocious Makhobalo (Nedbank Soweto) were victorious once again at the third tame TIMES Jozi Half Marathon - only this time they entered different races in the Senior Men’s category. This year Mohale won the 10km, which Makhobalo won last year; and Makhobalo won the 21km, which Mohale won last year. Lebo Phalula (Maxed Elite) won the senior women’s category in the 21km, with Kenyan-born Isabella Jepohumba (Nedbank Soweto) hot on her heels; but hats off to Seipati Peo (Maxed Elite), who removed her running shoes at the 15km mark because they were hurting her, and ran the rest of the race barefoot, coming in third. “That is the first and the last time I run with no shoes on. It was very painful,” Peo told tame TIMES. Three-times Comrades Marathon winner and current record-holder for the Comrades downhill run (1989) Benoni-based Frith BAREFOOT: Seipati Peo placed 3rd in the van der Merwe, ran the 10km and came 21km taking off her takkies at 15km mark. first in the Master Women’s category. Van der Merwe said, “The race was lovely; the
course was tougher than I expected. It was well organized and I will run it again.” Olympic gold medallist Lawrence Sizwe Ndlovu and the rest of his Team Seize teammates, including Tshwane Suns Basketball player Neo Mothiba, did well to beat Team Showbiz, which was headed by Wonderboom frontman Cito and came out in their numbers. Thousands of runners competed in the two races in cool, comfortable weather. The half marathon took in Soccer City, Chris-Hani Baragwanath Taxi Rank and Southgate Mall, and split from the 10km course at around the 4kmmark. The Jozi South Half Marathon was hosted by tame TIMES, Gold Reef City, Brotherhood Athletics Club and Sportsman’s Warehouse. Lisa Katzke tame TIMES PRO officer would like to thank The Glen Shopping Centre for sponsoring the voucher, East Rand Stereo for airtime and Matrix Warehouse (Alberton) for bottled water. Lions in the final against WP
Lionel Mapoe taking a tackle. * Photo: Christiaan Kotze The Xerox Golden Lions made sure to book their place in the Absa Currie Cup Final with a six-try match, beating the Cell C Sharks with a score of 50-20 at Ellis Park on Saturday. The Lions went into the game more determined than ever and it showed on the field. They competely dominated the match from the beginning and the Sharks did not stand a chance on the Lions’ home ground. Throughout the
Currie Cup season the Lions’ showed a dominant scrum, which contributed to making this one of the biggest semi-final wins in this competition in years. Jaco Kriel, the Currie Cup’s leading try-scorer this season, played an integral part in taking the game away from the Sharks. The Lions grew their confidence with a halftime score of 23-3 in favour of the home team. Even though the Sharks came into the second half more determined, the Lions would not give up on the final. The Sharks scored twice in three minutes, with Mtembu scoring a try and SP Marais scoring in the 71st minute. With nine minutes to go and the score at 33-20 behind, the Sharks was full of hope. But their hope was short-lived. The Lions ended the match with a victory and will face the DHL Western Province in the final on Saturday. It will be the first time
