SHAKING HANDS: Soccer players exchange a friendly handshake after the game.
Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za Jabez Cares, an arm of Jabez Football Academy, held a Mini-World Cup Day on 16 June (Youth Day) for Lerato Education Centre and Jacksons Drift informal settlement football teams. The aim was to draw on the excitement generated by the current FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Lyle Bennet, Jabez’s head coach said, “We
mixed the players from our development program with the players of Lerato school in order for the different cultures to interact with one another in a friendly environment. We at Jabez Football strive to discover and develop the unique talent within our nation and propel them into their purpose.” Rene Parker, a Lerato representative, told tame TIMES that the 45 young soccer players were treated like celebrities. “They

Each of the Lerato players received a Brazil kit bag full of merchandise, a football and a warm blanket. These items were handed to each Lerato player by a Jabez player. Parker would like to express a big thank you for the R2000 donation for much needed
equipment. “From Lerato Education Centre and Jacksons Drift informal settlement football teams, we thank Lyle Bennett from Jabez Academy, parents and players for a day that will stay in our hearts forever,” Parker said. The Jabez Cares program is an arm of the football development program, teaching the players the importance of giving.

Father’s Day Festival
Aspen Nature Estate residents not only have the luxury of staying in a beautiful and safe estate, but are also treated to exclusive events that are held within the estate. This past Father’s Day families had South African band Watershed entertaining them while they enjoyed the winter sun.The mini outdoor festival had all the added extras: Big Reds ran the bar and Smack Republic, a craft brewery, and Welgemeend Wine Estate were present

on the day as well. The helicopter rides over Aspen only added to the excitement of the children as they had their own area with inflatable activities which were sponsored by Xtreme Party Supplies. These activities kept the children amused while the parents enjoyed the live performances. The Raevans, a local South band, opened for Watershed with Howie Combrink, Watershed’s drummer, showcasing what will be offered on his soon-to-be released solo album.
WATERSHED: The chilled sounds of Watershed eased families into the new week.
INFLATABLE FUN: Children lining up for a turn in the inflatable balls.
FLYING HIGH: The children loved the helicopter rides.
The community’s response I was completely overwhelmed and humbled by the response I received from the community to last week’s column. Let me first say, the aim of it was not to receive pity from everyone but an expression of what I was going through. However, the care from the community has touched my heart so much. I have received e-mails from complete strangers telling me that my faith will definitely get me through this time and that they are praying for me. What has also been a pleasing eye-opener for me is the number of believers we have in the community. All Glory to God for this. Now, on a totally different subject - there was also a great community response on the question we posed about whether the overloaded bakkie of Mondeor High learners was a dangerous overload or a helpful lift. All the responses were that it was a danger, with many residents commenting that these children jump on the bakkies uninvited and that if one jumps than the rest follow. A resident has even said that learners often just open car-doors and expect to climb in uninvited. There has been a lot of flack given to the principal and I have to say I do think this is unfair. Yes, there is certainly a responsibility for the school, including the principal, to make sure the children are not a disturbance to the community and that the children are disciplined for wrongdoing. It is, however, one thing to control the children while they are on school premises but quite another when they are in a public area out of the school’s control. The question needs to be asked: where are the parents in this situation? It is also their responsibility - and mainly their responsibility - to protect their children and to bring them up with respect and manners. As one resident said, it is the parent’s responsibility to know their child gets home safely, and if their child is too lazy to walk a few kilometres up Columbine or if they do not have taxi-fare, the responsibility of finding a solution lies with the parents, not the principal. And if there were, God forbid, an accident with one of these overloaded bakkies, who are the parents going to blame? I do not doubt that the principal is trying her best to handle this situation. I say this because I went to Mondeor High and have had the privilege of being under her guidance. She loves her students and takes pride in the school and goes out of her way to make Mondeor High the best it can be.

“Dangerous overload” says community Last week a photograph of an overloaded bakkie carrying Mondeor High School learners was published and the community was asked if they thought it was a dangerous overload or a helpful lift. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) have been requested to comment and the company that owns the bakkie has been in contact with tame TIMES, requesting the registration number so the driver can be taken to task. Below are the residents’ comments: They jump on uninvited Anonymous– “I drive down Columbine every school day and these kids actually jump on the bakkies uninvited. They try to open your car door and I’m sure if it’s not locked, they will forcefully jump in, so I don’t think the driver of the said bakkie is at fault.” More climb in Cindy Chetty- “It’s certainly dangerous and the bakkie is getting damaged. The gesture is good, but unfortunately when one stops to give a lift to one or two, the other kids just climb in. I don’t give lifts anymore.”
Endangering their lives Anonymous- “Endangering anything can help”
their
lives,
What are these kids doing in the afternoon? Anonymous-“I travel this road to and from work on a daily basis and have seen this on countless occasions, if not this exact incident. I have written to the school principal regarding exactly this and evidently nothing has changed. I attended this school in my day and I was home in Kibler Park by no later than 15:00 each day and we caught a Metro Bus. So when I see all the pupils begging for a lift at 16:30, I am baffled as to what these pupils have been up to all afternoon and when, if at all, are they doing their homework? Are their parents not in the least bit concerned?” It is distressing when you are waiting at a traffic light (we are so nervous of hijacking) and a pupil comes knocking at your window for a lift. What infuriates me the most is when you say ‘no’ to them they actually get rude and angry.”

Exclusive tanning studio opens in JHB South The Sun Bar Professional Tanning Studio, owned by Dwayne Naude and Chandre Victor, opened its exclusive doors four months ago at Comaro View Shopping Centre. You will not only get a healthy tan all year round when making use of The Sun Bar’s products and services, but also have an holistic experience that will leave you energised, confident and ready to conquer the world. High-end sun beds are used. These imported beds offer an even tan in the shortest amount of time and are very convenient. “These beds protect you from the bad UV rays and are less harmful than the actual sun,” Victor said. Victor and Naude aim to change the perception that sun beds are harmful but do acknowledge that sun beds can be dangerous if they are misused. “We don’t allow our clients to do double sessions and a session is only 10 minutes long. We inform our fair-skinned clients what their limit is,” Victor explained and added that one does receive vitamin D from these high-end beds. The Sun Bar has three beds: one standing (vertical) and two lie-downs (horizontal). Clean and hygienic towels and goggles are provided, and the beds are cleaned and disinfected after each session. The beautiful and modern decor adds to the already pleasing experience. The clean and bright environment is very inviting and the friendly faces and professional advice extends the personal service. “We offer tanning plans - if a client comes in and says I need to get tanned in 7 days, than we will work out a plan with the products that are needed to attain the client’s goal,” Naude said. The Lumi8 facial system is also offered by The Sun Bar: this is an intense LED light facial system that offers a painless solution for healthier, younger-looking skin by providing safe, non-invasive treatment for all skin types. The following programs are offered: healing accelerator, anti-ageing, detoxification, uneven pigmentation, facial slimming, and tissue tightening and slimming/tightening. This exclusive tanning studio caters for everyone from girls going to Matric dances to body builders preparing for competitions. The Sun Bar is on the upper level of the Comaro View Shopping Centre. Why was Turk under Rethinking e-tolls disciplinary action? Manny de Freitas MP writes: I read with interest the letter by Mr Louis Mofokeng which was in tame TIMES of mid-May. Mr Mofokeng talks about Bev Turk who defected to the ANC. I dare Louis Mofokeng to tell us publicly why Bev Turk was under disciplinary action within the DA. If the public knew, I can assure you that people would literally freak out. I completely agree with Mofokeng; we should indeed ask about the future of the DA. The reality is that the DA came out of the Elections this year with over 4 million votes; this is more votes than any opposition party has ever achieved in South Africa. This indeed tells us a story, that the DA is growing and its trajectory is only up. Mr Mofokeng chooses to remain in his imaginary world. Unbelievably, he says that all ANC members are equal. Perhaps he can
explain that if this is the case, how is it that number one has an estate built just for him that is well over R250 million value, all this thanks to us, the taxpayer? If this is equality, I just do not know. Whilst on the topic of corruption, Mofokeng refers to the Travelgate saga claiming that there were DA members involved in it. This is simply not true. This can be verified as all this is a matter of public record. Mr Mofokeng, you are entitled to your own opinion but not to your own facts. Editor’s note: Mr de Freitas, I request you to tell us why Clr Bev Turk was under disciplinary action. If the public are going to “freak out,” and if it affects them, surely they have the right to know?

“Reports that Gauteng Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, has called for a second look into e-Tolls is a significant development in the DA’s fight against South African National Roads Agency Ltd’s (Sanral) gantries,” Manny de Freitas MP, DA Shadow Minister of Transport, said. “I will write to MEC Vadi and request a formal meeting with him to discuss the MEC’s change of heart,” de Freitas added. He said the DA will request that the Transport Portfolio Committee, at its first meeting, place e-tolls and Vadi’s proposed second look thereof on the agenda. “Vadi’s concession that no alternative fund-

ing model was considered and that there is general dissatisfaction with the funding model confirms our calls and suspicions. It is also a refreshing break from the ANC’s tone-deaf party line on the issue. This matter needs to be brought before the committee as a matter of urgency. Before the elections, it was agreed that the committee should invite parties with alternative views on e-tolls, particularly organisations such as OUTA, to present them to the committee. With civil society, political parties, unions and now even members of the ANC and government calling for the reconsideration of e-tolls, it’s time the state listens and Parliament makes this a priority.”
- My studentejare. - Die dag toe ek uiteindelik my bestuurslisensie gekry het (na sewe probeerslae). - My eerste vakansie oorsee (verlede jaar in Japan- was beslis ‘n buitengewone ervaring!)
President Zuma delivered his second State of the Nation Address this year the day after Youth Day, but said very little about the main problem facing the young people of this country: unemployment. His mention of the Youth Employment Accord and a vague promise to “prioritise” youth empowerment in “our economic transformation programme” will do little to pacify the Beret Brigade, and the Honourable Malema will certainly not lose a single minute of sleep over the Honourable Zuma’s commitment on the part of government to “investigate the possibility of a national minimum wage.” The President’s speech-writer did well, however, to begin with the subject of Marikana. In this regard, the plan to “revitalise mining towns” is long overdue. Had government tackled this burning issue in earnest before August 2012, it might have gone some way to averting the Marikana massacre and the crippling strikes that have followed it. Anyone who has visited the area will know that the riches underground hardly match the living conditions of miners who reside in shacks without services, or neglected townships with dirt roads and dilapidated houses. Nevertheless, a promise in Parliament is just that – it has still to be implemented. The Energy Security Cabinet Sub-committee, which seems to be government’s solution to load shedding, is also not likely to inspire confidence in the private sector, which may be forced to engage in job shedding if serious power outages make a habit of spoiling supermarkets’ frozen goods and stopping restaurants, hairdressers and other businesses from operating. Citizens’ confidence in government’s ability to perform is not strong enough for them to accept that, if the President said it, it will happen. The President needs to spell out concrete, measurable, realistic implementation details with deadlines in order to restore the nation’s trust in government’s ability to do service delivery. Promises to revitalise local government, to fix Joburg’s billing system, to eradicate the bucket system, to increase university passes, to implement a reliable and caring National Health Insurance system, to deal with crime and corruption to the tune of R30bn a year have all been heard before from government. Although South African voters still support the ANC, we have service delivery protests in our country about every second day. Most citizens, therefore, would probably have preferred him to give us a plan of action on Tuesday rather than a list of promises.

A roof over their heads Community Awareness Training CRIME
The Glenvista 5 Resident’s Association has started a new programme called Community Awareness Training (CAT) which is focused on the residents’ specific needs for the area. Its aim is to serve the whole community, not just domestic workers. Sarah Wissler, a Glenvista 5 Resident’s Association member, will host the training with D&D Tactical supporting and sponsoring the CAT programme. CAT will meet once a month. The first lesson took place on 12 June at
the New South Veterinary Clinic in Glenvista where Taylormade Fire Services gave a demonstration on how to use a fire blanket and a fire extinguisher. Several attendees won fire blankets and extinguishers through a lucky draw. A R750 gift voucher for The Glen Shopping Centre was also raffled. Pepper spray bottles were donated to each attendee by a resident. The fee to attend the lesson is R10. Anyone who would like to attend is requested to contact Sarah Wissler on 083 256 3453.

The local Democratic Alliance (DA) branch sprang into action after they heard that one of the roofs in Tornaka Court flats in South Hills had collapsed, leaving the De Villiers family destitute. “I immediately asked around for donations of all description”, explained Faeeza Chame, DA candidate for the ward 57 by-election. According to Chame the response was overwhelming. “The company Countrywide Refrigeration’ has sponsored the ceiling boards at no charge at all.” She added that she obtained sponsorships for much needed furniture from ‘Supreme Furniture’. It is believed that the roof collapsed due to

pigeons living in the roof; however Chame believes the real reason is due to the City of Johannesburg’s continued neglect of its flats. “Government owned flats are simply not maintained and repaired when needed,” she said. “The De Villiers family were very excited when we offered to assist”, said Chame. Lest we forget Thursday 13 June 2014 was the fiftieth anniversary of the day seven political prisoners, including one Nelson Rolihlala Mandela, landed on Robben Island on a cold, wet winter’s day to begin their decades-long prison sentences. The Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton marked the occasion with a ceremony by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth Leadership Programme. Since June is Youth Month in South Africa, pupils from various schools were invited to the event. Over tea and coffee, they mingled with journalists and studied the works of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, David Turnley, displayed in the foyer. This photographic history of the “struggle” included pictures of a strikingly beautiful young Winnie Mandela, black South Africans being beaten by a white police-officer and the very symbolic picture of a white schoolboy lounging on a bench while two black women, who at the time were prohibited by law from sitting on that bench, walk past. There was also a terrifying aerial shot of a “sellout” about to be “necklaced” – a man with a tyre around his neck surrounded by an angry crowd dragging him to a horrible, fiery death. The programme of the day included the reading of Madiba’s famous trial speech by Sello Maake KaNcube and a speech by Walter Sisulu’s grandson Shaka Sisulu. Mr
By Palesa
Sisulu explained how his grandfather, Uncle Kathy (Ahmed Kathrada) and the other Rivonia triallists were tried because of their plans to sabotage government institutions. He described their relief at receiving lifesentences instead of being hanged, ascribing this to international pressure exerted on the apartheid government at the time. He urged the youth of 2014 to stand up for their beliefs, no matter what the cost. Then there was an opportunity to hear about conditions on the Island from former Robben Island in-mate Ahmed Kathrada. He described how prisoners were detained for 90 days with no visitors except police, who threatened them with death; how the single white Rivonia triallist was not sent to Robben Island but imprisoned elsewhere; how black prisoners wore short pants and the others were given long trousers; how he, as an Indian, received bread every morning, but Madiba had to wait ten years to be given his first slice of bread in prison. Uncle Kathy also described how prisoners with education taught those without, despite enduring harsh prison conditions and working eight hours a day with a pick and shovel; and encouraged today’s youth to make the most of the education they receive. The ANC may be a little too fond of its anniversaries, but this was one worth remembering.

Doc McStuffins at Theatre arts training Southgate Mall Spend a week this winter at the National Children’s Theatre. In a fun-filled way, campers develop skills in creative problem-solving, communication, self-discipline and empathy; they are encouraged to become active learners and engage with and experience a vast range of ideas and situations in a safe and supportive atmosphere. It also gives children an outlet for emotions, thoughts and dreams they might not otherwise have a means to express. This is the way to advance theatre as a means of educating, challenging and inspiring campers.
Disney’s Doc McStuffins Mobile will be visiting Southgate Mall from 4 to 6 July as part of a programme to encourage children to live healthy lifestyles. Children can visit the imagination playground, learn about Lenny’s Hydration Station, enjoy picnick-time in the mall and experience the fun of the colour-in activity zone. Many
different exercises, all supporting the themes of physical development, good nutrition, positive lifestyle choices and empowerment will keep the children entertained.
Boston voted coolest private college
Holiday Bible Club
South Africa’s youth have chosen Boston City Campus & Business College as one of the top ten “Coolest of the Cool University or College” in the Sunday Times Generation Next 2014 Survey. What makes this an exceptional achievement is that the other nine institutions voted in this category are all universities, making Boston the only private college in the top 10. “It’s really cool to be voted as one of the coolest again”, Ari Katz, Boston’s CEO said, “But then at Boston we do after all have an informal policy of ‘student is king’ whilst the general perception is that most universities and colleges tend to have a sink-or-swim attitude. At Boston we believe that academia does not have to be this cold, lonely world it’s often made out to be.” For Katz this achievement was made possible not only because of Boston’s level of education, but also because of the college’s unique approach to students. “Our recipe for success lies with approaching each and every student as an individual with unique needs, requiring unique assistance, support and advice. Ultimately our aim is to get every student qualified and employed. In achieving this we also try our best to ensure that not a single student gets left out or left behind. It’s because of this personalised outlook, and the vibey on-campus experience, that our students think so highly of us,” Katz said. According to Natalie Rabson, Marketing Manager at Boston, another reason why the Boston brand is so popular among current students and those who have graduated, is because of the imprint left by the Experience It programme. “One of the biggest challenges that face students is acquiring hands-on experience and skills to help further their business knowledge and their understanding of workplace culture. Through Experience It students get the opportunity to be interviewed for vacant positions and apply, and have the opportunity to get placed. New biking and running club A new mountain bike and trail running club, Thaba Trails Club, is being officially launched in the south of Johannesburg in June. Thaba Trails Club will offer advice, coaching and company to all levels of athletes and cyclists. Thaba Trails Club will be based at Thaba Ya Batswana, an eco hotel and conferencing venue set against the backdrop of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve - a scenic 680 ha sanctuary located just 10 km from Johannesburg that features breathtaking landscapes and a wide diversity of wildlife. Thaba Trails Club owner, Wendell Bole, reveals that the club was established after several requests by residents in the area for a mountain bike club to be opened. “Over the past seven years I have had a number of requests to start a club here. In the past I was reluctant to go ahead with the project as I believed that there were other clubs in the area that should be supported. However, it has become evident that few of these clubs cater for mountain biking, and there are no clubs that provide for beginners,” he explained. There are two distinct categories to the club, namely mountain biking and trail running; however, Bole stressed that members will not be restricted to these two disciplines. “The mountain bikers will be participating in road racing as well as track cycling, and the athletes will also take part in road and track ACTIVE: A mountain biker at Thaba Trails Club South of races. We are hoping the different disciplines will Johannesburg. support each other.” mountain bikers and trail runners of different abilities. Members of the club will also enjoy numerous perks, including discounts at nearby cycle shop, The “There will be race snakes aiming for Provincial and Cycle Hub and special annual Club access fees to National Honours, but there will also be races for Thaba Trails and the Rietvlei Cycle Park. Members will those who want to take part for personal reasons. We also enjoy discounted insurance prices from the club’s will encourage everyone to reach their own goals,” he insurance broker, Cyclesure and be encouraged to join concludes. OFF THE PITCH
By Craig Norris
The Cricket World Cup The Soccer World Cup has certainly kept us on the edges of our seats. Spain has already been sent home before the half-way mark. My bet to win is Brazil, Holland or Argentina. Will there ever be an opportunity of staging a similar Cricket World Cup? I am not convinced. The ICC body that governs the game of cricket has on numerous occasions for the last few years mentioned the idea of setting up a similar format of a test match cricket World Cup. Ideas such as playing the matches at midday using a red ball and ending a day’s play under lights using a pink ball are ludicrous. The Indian IPL Cricket in its own format as a spectacle from a spectator point of view has been brilliant. The record crowd, at this tournament, over the last seven years has certainly proven that T20 is a winner.I am not sure that introducing
new changes to five-day test match cricket will bring the crowds in. I watched England battling with Sri Lanka at Headingley in the second test; and it was full in terms of crowd attendance. If the ICC wants to introduce a new test match format, they need to rethink the rules and regulations of such a concept. The following questions need to be asked: how long; and how many days this type of tournament will take? Do you cut the length of a game to four days by only having to take five wickets in the second innings; do you block out three months every four years to accommodate this odd idea? I do not believe this will ever work, as test match cricket will never ever change. There is nothing wrong with introducing new ideas, but why fix it if it is not broken? It is understandable that crowds across the world at test match cricket have
somewhat dwindled, due to rising costs across the board, but the ICC need to remodel the marketing of the game in the best interests of the paying public. I suggest that the set up of test fixtures must be the same. It is frustrating in that some test series have two tests; some have three tests and obviously the Ashes are played over five test matches. There needs to be consistency if the ICC ever wants to bring a change as they have suggested.
