I never thought I would get hooked on bird watching – to take a step back, I never found animals of the avian kind any exciting. My thoughts on birds never went past that of a measly street pigeon or my granny’s canary pecking at its seed in its cage. As I’ve mentioned before, nature and wildlife are a great passion of mine but birds never piqued my interest – until recently. After studying about them, the world of birds is now a firm part of me. Apart from their exquisite features, their

LETTERS behaviours and traits are truly fascinating. The feeling of spotting a new or rare species is one that cannot be described. Sounds dorky, but I have no qualms about being called a “bird nerd.” And it gets even nerdier – the scientific names of birds is something I revel in; makes one feel like a professor from a Harry Potter novel. In South Africa, there is a plethora of birding groups and societies that one can join. There are also several spots that are perfect for birding in and around the city. My favourite places to go include the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve in the south, Marievale Bird Sanctuary on the East Rand and Rietvlei Nature Reserve in Pretoria. My best birding moment was when I saw an African Pygmy Kingfisher (Ispidina picta) in the Kruger Park – measuring between 11-13cm in length, it’s the smallest of all the kingfishers in South Africa. Letter from Jogger Dear Editor, I found your editorial piece on banting and Prof. Tim Noakes very interesting. Back in 1980 or so I had the privilege of meeting Prof. Noakes at a jogger’s clinic he held at the Villager’s Rugby/Celtic Harriers grounds in Cape Town. He fixed my very painful case of shin splints by recommending the insertion of an orthotic in my running shoe, which, in those days was a revolutionary high-tech solution to a rather strange problem. These days, of course, running shoes are made with built -in roll bars and specially strengthened insteps for those prone to pronation – and seldom cause blisters. The orthotic I used back then, however, gave me a blister on my instep that measured about 7cm in length and at least 4cm across. I called Prof. Noakes and he very

patiently advised me to cover the blister with petroleum jelly and then wrap a wide plaster around it. I should not, he explained, take the plaster off for about a week – by which time the blister would be healed and the affected skin would be hard, red and ready to withstand any amount of jogging. He was right, and I have used his remedy ever since. His current advice on diet, however, I would prefer to ignore. How many can afford to live on biltong and pecan nuts? It is the carbohydrates in joggers’ diets that keep them going. While I agree that overly refined carbohydrates are an unhealthy and fattening choice, I cannot understand why active people should not eat brown rice, samp and beans, or seed bread. Perhaps the answer is that there is no one, single ideal diet for every person at every age.

• No routine of making patient’s bed before or after theatre. • No offer of assistance for bathing patient or assisting them to the restroom. • One has to remind staff to dispense medicine. • X-rays/radiation takes 30 minutes to fetch patients. • Discharge takes three hours. • Medical waste not disposed of correctly – blood in basin that was located in patient’s room; bloody cotton wool on top of the waste basket that was full of other medical waste and over flowing. Patients and visitors exposed to unnecessary risks due to medical waste not being disposed. •Noise levels high. •No water/ice given to patient after surgery - the patient had to ask a visitor to buy ice from the restaurant. • Junior staff not supervised and senior staff had no interest in visiting the wards. •Doctors and other senior staff members have complained but stopped due to no change taking place. Their requests and complaints have been ignored. • Nursing staff sourced by labour broker/temporary employment service – no loyalty and no respect is shown to patients. A string of complaints has been received by tame TIMES regarding the quality of service and the physical state of the Netcare Clinton Hospital, as well as the Netcare Union Hospital. Members of the Netcare Group of hospitals, the Clinton and the Union, both situated in Alberton, have come under fire from citizens living in the South of Johannesburg. Remaining anonymous on behalf of her 14-year-old daughter, one Meyersdal resident has come forward and spoken out regarding the bad service that she received while visiting the Clinton Hospital on two occasions. On 30 June 2014, the resident’s daughter was taken to the Clinton where, says her mother, she received a lack of quality service. “After complaining, the Nursing Services Manager, Stanley Mhlongo, came to my workplace and promised change regarding the hospital service,” said the resident. On the second visit, which took place in September 2014, her daughter received a private room but the resident commented that the service provided during the second visit should be given all the time and to all patients. “It’s high time medical aid realises that they are being short-changed by hospitals providing inadequate and pathetic service. Medical aid costs are raised and continue to climb each year and the community suffers,” added the resident. In another incident, a Mondeor resident who experienced an excruciating pain in their neck and shoulder coupled with a numb sensation all the way down their left arm went to the emergency wing of the Union Hospital where they received no serious attention. Apart from waiting at the front help desk, which was abandoned for about 15 minutes, the resident was eventually approached and asked to wait. The resident said that the emergency area was crowded, filthy and

smelled of food and urine. There was litter found on the floors in several different areas of the hospital, and the emergency room where patients’ vitals are checked was in a most appalling state. “The nurse on duty had no manners whatsoever,” said the Mondeor resident. “She didn’t even ask for my name when I walked through the door and I had to ask her if I could sit down,” they added. The resident noted that the nurse kept leaving the room to fetch documentation and other general medical paraphernalia and added that the nurse consistently complained about the previous nurse on duty who did not do their job properly by not having the correct documentation in the room on hand. Fed up, the resident asked to speak to the manager on duty. After waiting in vain, the manager met with the resident and appeared to show no concern about what had happened. The manager used the excuse that it was his first night on duty in the hospital. “The manager seemed unaffected and didn’t even take proper action on the matter,” said the Mondeor resident. “He simply told me that the hospital staff was busy and that I should go to the Clinton Hospital just up the road. I couldn’t believe the service I was getting!” they added. The Netcare Group of private hospitals states on its website that, “At Netcare our core value is care. We care about the

dignity of patients and all members of the Netcare family. We care about the participation of our people and our partners in everything we do. We care about truth in all our actions. We are passionate about quality care and professional excellence.” According to the Mondeor resident, however, “This statement appears flawed as the service I received was careless.” tame TIMES Chief Executive Officer Karin Blignaut also provided comment regarding her experience at the Clinton Hospital. “Cleanliness is lacking. The toilets were smelly and people were standing right in front of the main entrance smoking, which is an illegal offence. Doctors on call during the evening send patients home due to being extremely busy. This is unacceptable,” says Blignaut.

NETCARE SPEAKS tame TIMES approached Netcare in order to receive comment from the hospital group. Esme Abrahams, General Manager of the Netcare Union and Clinton Hospitals, was more than happy to meet the editor for an interview regarding the situation. “Netcare’s service protocol is based on ethical pillars, with customer service and quality healthcare being key aspects of the group,” said Abrahams. “Customer service is my passion and attention at all times is important,” she added. Hailing from a strong nursing background, Abrahams joined Clinic Holdings, which later became Netcare, after a spell as a

school nurse, and moved swiftly up the ranks from Unit Manager to Deputy Nursing Service Manager, and from Support Services Manager to Nursing Services Manager at the Park Lane Clinic. She was appointed Hospital Manager of the Rand Clinic in January 2004, where she is also responsible for the portfolio of nursing management. This unique situation allows her to empower, guide and delegate the functions within the operation while keeping a firm hand on service excellence. After a two-year stint in the US, Abrahams returned to South Africa with new knowledge and increased experience in customer service and quality healthcare. She was instrumental in coordinating the evacuation of babies from the Natalspruit Hospital to

Netcare Garden City Hospital during the strikes in 2010. She was also involved in the 2012 skin transplant of Isabella “Pippie” Kruger, as well as the expansion of the Mulbarton Hospital in 2007. Abrahams notes that serious plans are underway to build a new Netcare hospital in the South of Johannesburg in order to boost healthcare service in the area. Abrahams is “confident that the Union and Clinton uphold and maintain quality healthcare services, and will continue to provide [her] services to the hospitals with passion.” tame TIMES will be closely monitoring feedback from both community members and Netcare, and will keep a finger on the pulse of the development of the proposed hospital.

WOMEN@WORK HELPS CHILDREN Post-divorce recovery for children was the theme of Women@Work’s meeting on Tuesday 17 March at the Thaba Eco Hotel, and the charity of choice for the month was Door of Hope. Divorce is a huge problem in South Africa, said guest speaker Bev Loubser, with up to 50% of marriages ending in court eight to 10 years after the wedding and therefore usually involving couples with young children. Loubser, an attorney with a difference, has instituted a system called “collaborative practice” to spare children as much of the trauma of divorce as possible. Collaborative Practice is a contract between the divorcing parties that involves mediation rather than litigation. Specialists determine the best custody solution for the children and post-divorce support is also offered. It is practised in over 20 countries and has been proven to help give custody to the parent who is best equipped financially, emotionally or socially for this task. Collaborative Practice avoids the personality disorders, tragedies and unnecessary expenses that divorces involving litigation often cause. For more information go to: www.loubserattorneys.co.za. Philippa Levitt, who works very closely with Bev Loubser, also spoke at the event. A qualified attorney who left the profession to focus on helping families, she is now a relationship, divorce and empowerment coach. She gives divorced parents 10 postdivorce steps, helping them to change fear to faith, to accept what they have been through and to cope in future.

Levitt also runs workshops on, among other things, teaching people to express their emotions in healthy and constructive ways and not to suppress feelings that are unhealthy - as this leads to anger, depression and jealousy. What you cannot feel you cannot heal, she says. Guest speaker Carmen Pretorius from Door of Hope told the ladies that the organisation cares for about 66 babies at a time. They are usually given up for adoption by the age of two or three; but those who turn three without being adopted need to be placed elsewhere, which is a huge problem since all the orphanages in the surrounding area are full to capacity – there are no facilities for these children within the two homes in Glenvista and the one in Berea. Door of Hope, as a result, has started a fund-raising drive to raise R3-million to build a new house, with a longer term goal of a village for the older children which will be called Hope House. This will be selfsustaining and enable older children to finish school while there, and even to study further and work until they can support themselves. At present, Door of Hope is selling beautiful wooden piggybanks to raise money towards purchasing a property to build their new village. Just how bad is the situation? Looking at the latest official crime statistics gives one some kind of picture of the situation, as these figures are researched each year by the Institute for Security Studies and Africa Check.

Please note that the numbers below represent averages for every 100 000 people. For example, the murder statistic for 2013/14 reflects 32.2 murder victims per 100 000 citizens that year. The absolute figure for murders was 47 per day. One should also bear in mind that not all crimes are reported, especially sexual crimes. Lizeth Kotze Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za In this day and age it is difficult for parents not to fear the world outside when it comes to our children. We are bombarded by news stories about child abductions or crimes committed against children. The thought that our children are exposed to these type of dangerous while in our presence, even at a family restaurant, is enough to send chills down any parent’s spine. A family dinner at a local restaurant is something we all enjoy. The kids get all excited with the prospect of having dinner while playing in the kids’ recreational area together with the possibility of making a new friend along the way. Even though we want our children to enjoy the experience, one needs to keep a watchful eye in order to keep them safe from possible dangerous. There was a case where a woman offered a waiter R2 000 to help her abduct children over the fence of the play area. Cases like these make us realise that ‘stranger danger’ and child abductions are a reality. As parents we should empower our children on what to do when they find themselves in a situation that makes them uncomfortable. We must help them understand how to deal with potentially dangerous scenarios.

DEFINING WHO QUALIFIES AS A STRANGER You have probably explained the term ‘stranger’ to your toddler already. Make sure that he understands that a stranger is anyone he does not know - whether man or woman, young or old, smartly-dressed, polite or appearing to mean well.

BASIC STRANGER RULES ALL CHILDREN SHOULD KNOW Children should be taught not to do the following under any circumstances: - accept gifts or sweets from any stranger, - go anywhere without adult supervision, - go off on their own (not even to the bathroom). If approached by a stranger, they should run towards and tell a trusted adult. Parents should consider where they choose to sit in a restaurant. If possible, sit as close as possible to the kids’ play area. Avoid sitting close to the kitchen or entrance of the restaurant. Explain to your child what you expect of them before you even arrive at the restaurant and stick to the rules you set. A simple rule like, “Come and tell mommy (Sourced from www.africacheck.org) before you just go off to the bathroom on your own” might just save the apple of your eye’s life. Kids should not be expected to be adults and thus cannot be expected to sit still at the table during the course of the meal. MINISTER ENDORSES N12 TREASURE ROUTE

The new Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, has endorsed the N12 Treasure Route (N12 TR) – a first for a tourism route in South Africa. This visionary move will stimulate and lead major sustainable tourism destination development and transformation for all communities on the N12 TR, changing the country’s tourism landscape forever. In the Minister’s letter he says that, “the N12 Treasure Route is destined to become a major tourism destination in South Africa”. The N12 TR is a non-profit tourism association formed by a partnership between private tourism product owners and tourism authorities from the public sector. The N12 TR aims to be the top tourism route in South Africa. “Our mission is to create a “mega route” like Route 66 in the USA which attracts travellers from all walks of life from South Africa and the rest of the world. This will create economic benefits through tourism-led GDP growth along this forgotten tourism gem. Our communities are intimately integrated into the development plans of the Treasure Route to ensure transformation of tourism in the country,” explains Alan Roxton Wiggill, Chief Executive Officer of the N12 TR. The National Department of Tourism (NDT), as strategic

leader of tourism development in South Africa, sees the N12 TR as an ideal partner to pioneer tourism growth in rural areas to achieve government’s strategic goals of tourism-led job creation, transformation and GDP growth. According to Wiggill, big and fresh new tourism brands like this project will lead to increased tourism numbers and spend in South Africa which will feed the economies all along the route. The N12 TR spans more than 1300km from the Garden Route in George, via Kimberly, past Joburg and on to eMalahleni. It passes

through six provinces and 38 towns. Wiggill says that there are literally thousands of unique and wonderful tourism attractions on the N12 which are mostly unknown. The Treasure Route pulls all these attractions together as one brand, offering all kinds of travellers a unique tourism experience. The N12 TR Association Chairman, Rob Trautmann, is delighted with the NDT endorsement and commended the Minister and the NDT for their bold leadership. Trautmann feels that this action will bring long-term tourism-led growth to areas that have fallen off the tourism radar. The N12 TR Association is implementing sustainable destination development through public sector and private business cooperation. The community-based tourism model followed by the association will lead to tourism development, job creation and skills upgrading for the poor communities on the N12. Trautmann goes on to say that South Africa needs “mega” tourism destinations such as the N12 TR to be able to catch the attention of both domestic and international tourists in the cluttered travel media space today. He says marketing a destination such as the N12 TR has proven to be far more effective and cheaper than attempting to market individual products on your own. “The N12 TR creates a brand around its people who tell fresh stories through their own eyes about their part on this route which is steeped in history and untold stories,” notes Wiggill. All the route branding is developed and built with local community involvement. New partnerships are being formed to develop and market many of the iconic attractions en route, such as the Vredevort Dome world heritage site, the Taung skull, 35 world firsts in mining, the Kimberly Big Hole; the Karoo National Park, the Cango Caves, Meierings Pass and the Garden Route. The mass cooperation between the public sector-led NDT and the private sector-led N12 TR Association takes this mega brand to market, encouraging travellers to holiday on the N12 route. Partnerships are being formed to develop skills, tourism products and growth of economies through sustainable community-based tourism to deliver on jobs and economic growth all along the N12 TR. The funding for the project initiation is made by the public sector. Artist Rob van Koningsbruggen was banned from Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art after he threatened to urinate on works, including those by South African born artist, Marlene Dumas. A two-and-a-half-year feud between Van Koningsbruggen and the museum was sparked when Van Koningsbruggen was allegedly left off the invitation list to attend the

museum’s grand reopening after a facelift. A few days before the reopening he allegedly wrote an email to the museum, threatening to urinate on the artworks, which his attorneys countered with a claim that Van Koningbruggen’s comments were meant as satire and his sense of humour was misinterpreted as anger. www.artnetnews.com

Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first public appearance in 11 days on 16 March. Rescuers called off the search for the remaining passengers of Flight QZ8501 on 17 March, almost three months after the Airbus A320-200 went down in stormy weather on its way to Singapore, killing all 162 people on board. The international search, which included ships and aircraft from several nations, has been scaled back in recent weeks, with only a small number of new bodies found. Six killed by lightning

Six people died and five were injured when they were struck by lightning on the N8 about 20km outside Botshabelo. The men, aged between 20 and 40, are construction workers who took shelter from the rain in a structure close by. South Africa finally seems to have shaken off the choking monkey on their backs during the pool stages of every Cricket World Cup series by winning their first ever knockout match at a World Cup. Captain AB de Villiers boldly declared on 17 March that they would not be choking in the quarter final match the following day. Thanks to an incredible team effort, this prediction came true. Dale Steyn was back to being fast and furious, Imran Tahir and JP Duminy were exceptional in their execution and Quinton de Kock looked like the player he was before the ankle injury that nearly ruled him out of the World Cup. JP Duminy’s haul included a hattrick, three for 29. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first, leaving the Proteas chasing just 134 to win. The Proteas reached their target in the 18th over, trashing Sri Lanka with nine wickets and 32 overs to spare. South Africa headed to Eden Park, Auckland for the semi final match against New Zealand, taking place today (24 March), placing the Proteas one step closer to World Cup victory. However, this World Cup has been ‘’more unpredictable than most women’’ according to journalist Michael Mentz. The quarter final victory has united South Africa like only sport can, but the nation should wait before they place the champagne on ice for the finals taking place on 29 March.

MARIST BROTHERS LINMEYER ENJOYS THE OUTDOORS

The Grade 5 and 6 students from Marist Brothers Linmeyer enjoyed the outdoors participating in sporting activities during two different school camps. The Grade 6 learners from Marist Brothers Linmeyer thoroughly enjoyed their time spent at Camp Nelu from 23 to 25 February. Early morning aerobics prepared the students for teambuilding activities, swimming, rock climbing and wonderful nature walks. The three fun-filled days each ended with campfire stories and toasted marshmallows. From 23 February until 25 February, the Grade 5 students from Marist Brothers Linmeyer enjoyed a wonderful camp at Ukutula Lodge. Fun activities such as rock climbing, obstacle courses and archery kept the students busy and active over the three days. It was special moments and memories of learning how to survive in the wilderness, appreciating the beauty of the country’s wildlife and holding lion cubs that made this such a special tour.
