The HOT SPOT CURRY Den has re-opened
HOT SPOT STAFF: Mmaleeto Hlasa, Martin Rathinasamy, Thato Pheko and Alice Mokanyane
The Hot Spot Curry Den, situated at SP Pavillion Shopping Centre, has re-opened after the shop caught alight in November last year due to a power surge. Fortunately, the fire occurred during the night and no one was hurt, but it gutted the store. Martin Rathinasamy, owner of The Hot Spot Curry Den said, “I would like to thank our loyal customers for being patient and understanding while the store was closed for two and a half months while it was being re-done. The store is now open and I welcome our old clients as well as new clients.” To celebrate the re-opening, Rathinasamy is now offering daily specials of delicious Indian dishes.
The Hot Spot Curry Den has always been known for their Bunny Chows and their variety of rolls, especially the AK47; but for anyone who is craving a spicy and filling meal, the many other items on the The Hot Spot Curry Den menu will definitely hit the spot . Every Friday Breyani is on special, alternating weekly between chicken and mutton, giving residents of The South a perfect way to start the weekend.
The Hot Spot Curry Den is situated at shop 14 at SP Pavillion. Tel: 011 435 8503/ 084 433 0397. Opening hours: Mon to Sat: 8:00 to 19:00 (Fri) 20:00 Sun: 10:30 to 15:00

This is the second last tame TIMES newspaper I ever do. It is quite hard to get my head and heart around it - I must say, there are mixed emotions. Last week I sent out emails toCHOW: my contacts BUNNY or, should I rather say, my of anyon work thatcommunity will satisfy friends informing them of my departure and the response I got from them was SOOO good! I was showered in love with such kind words. Those words that were spoken have made these four-and-a -half years worth while. Thank you to every person who responded with benevolence, and most of all encouragement. All I can say is hard work and dedication pays off in the end and I hope you, the readers of JHB South tame TIMES, know that I tried my best and put my utmost effort into the paper and into the community, hoping I would somehow make an impact and a difference. The reality became even more final when I walked into the office last week and was told: “we got a new you.” Yes, my position has been filled. I pray that the new person has complete love and passion to build on the already awesome community of JHB South we have, that she is news-hungry and ready to make a bigger impact in our community. As for me, I will still be living here and hope to bump into familiar, friendly faces on a weekly basis and will obviously be very eager to get my copy of tame TIMES to see what is happening. God bless x x

No response from schools in The Broads
Following last week’s article regarding the utter frustration of residents who stay in The Broads, which has three schools and a learning centre, no response has been forthcoming from any of them regarding the traffic caused by parents and the rubbish and noise caused by learners. However, tame TIMES did receive the following letters from more unhappy residents suggesting possible ways to solve the problem. Read the suggestions below and email your thoughts to laurelle@tametimes if you think they would work.
A VERY FRUSTRATED RESIDENT WRITES: Hooray at last! Hopefully something will now be resolved in this street. I run a business from home and the noise level when students leave in the afternoon, the litter left outside our property and thrown over the wall, parents parking on and across our driveway and on our outside lawn, have been concerns for many years. The students have even written on our wall, which we then have to clean. These concerns have been raised with the school and even the principal. We were told that once the students leave the school grounds there is nothing they can do, but if we took down their names we could report them to the school. These students just laugh in our faces. Are these students not proud of the uniform they wear? If they were, they would not behave in such a poor manner. We suggested that the school use the security company they employ to control the students arriving at, and leaving, the school. We were told that we could phone the security company ourselves, but the security company is employed by Glenvista High and not the residents. What a ludicrous response!
Page 3
tame TIMES
My business partner’s children go to a school where the pupils are controlled and not allowed to loiter in the street. Prefects are put on duty to see to this. There are teachers patrolling the road to make sure parents do not park where they should not. If they do, then the student is given detention. Something like this would go a long way to make for orderly arrivals and exits at the school. Bad behaviour and not respecting the residents’ property needs to be punished. They could do community service at the school. Toilets need to be cleaned and school corridors, swept. They could also do gardening and maintenance or even clean the teachers’ cars. In this way they are giving back to the school. We suggest that a pick-up and drop-off point be created on True North Road. This would go a long way to alleviating the buildup of traffic congestion on The Broads. The pick-up points could be split across grades. If Glenvista High school has a monthly newsletter, they should have a “name-andshame” column and report the parents and students who do not adhere to the rules.
SCRAPYARD FIRE STORY FROM FRONT PAGE
Laurelle Williams
spokeswoman, told tame TIMES that the call came in just after 14:00. Both Turffontein and Kibler Park Fire Departments responded to the scene and four fire-trucks were used to extinguish the fire. “Two employees of the scrapyard were working on a vehicle when they cut something which caused a spark and a fire erupted. The fire spread at a rapid speed to the other vehicles that were in the yard.”
laurelle@tametimes.co.za A fire erupted in a scrapyard in Fraser Street, Booysens on 21 January, causing a billow of thick black smoke to be seen for over three hours while City of Johannesburg fire-fighters put the fire out. No one was injured. Nana Radebe, City of Johannesburg EMS
SUFFERING LOCAL MOTORIST WRITES: The first problem is the locality of the school sites. In most cases there is very little or no parking facilities, with the exception of Glenanda Primary, which has ample off-street parking. Not that all parents use it. By far the worst is Glenvista High. The pupils have the most inconsiderate, rude parents who have no regard for other road users or residents. This is not new behaviour. I had a child in that school many years ago, and even back then the situation was not much better. We wonder why the young motorists around The South have such appalling road manners, with so many accidents with tragic loss of life. They simply grow up and follow the rude inconsiderate, irresponsible road behaviour of their inconsiderate, careless parents. I often drive past other schools and none are nearly as bad as Glenvista. I do not think there is anything that can be done about more parking, as the site is full.
What are the chances of getting parents to behave in a decent manner? Not good, I suspect. To add to the congestion,REMAX converted a house in True North Road to offices (virtually bordering the school on that side), generating a lot of other traffic and cars parked all over the sidewalk. The congestion on this road opposite the entrance/exit to the Mulbarton Hospital, with two nursery schools and an office or two just across the road is even worse. The unused gate “at the back” of the hospital, on the western side of their premises should become the entrance. I know there was a petition a year or so ago gathering signatures for something to be done about the traffic around there, and other parts of True North for calming measures, which was by rejected by JRA.
A CONCERNED CITIZEN WRITES: As we are all aware, Johannesburg is a rapidly expanding city, suburbs spring up almost overnight and the number of cars on our roads has increased dramatically. Obviously new schools will be needed in the future and it should be a requirement that a large area adjacent to each school is acquired for parking purposes. We have parking areas for customers at our shopping malls and the same is also necessary for cars used to collect/deliver children from/to school. All vehicles arriving at the school should be required to enter the parking area, which should have designated areas for dropping off children, communal collection vehicles, parents etc. The entrance to the parking area should not be in the vicinity of the houses of the residents in the area, nor should the vehicles transporting children attending
the school obstruct other road users or residents - so obviously careful planning and designing should be undertaken when building a new school to ensure that access can easily be gained. Perhaps even a side road at the back of the school could be allocated specifically for those requiring entry into the parking area. Gone are the days when parking bays in the roads surrounding the school were sufficient for the present volume of people that need to be catered for. Unfortunately, the above suggestion does not help the present situation and I can only sympathize with the residents of the areas in question who have to try to get in and out of their houses amid all the chaos. However, we need people with a vision in order to avoid such situations in the future.

Allegiance always comes first
Allegiance Properties opened in 2007 and in the eight years of serving the community of JHB South and Alberton, they have built up a reputation for obtaining the highest selling prices. The many satisfied customers who have used Allegiance Properties as their realtors also bear testimony to their tag line “deal with people you know.” So, directors Julian Cornofsky, Jorge Calisto and Jarryd Soma are pleased to announce that this year Allegiance Properties will be opening a rental division, on the back of a very successful 2014. “Last year we achieved record selling prices for clients in Meyersdal Eco Estate and Nature Estate as well as the biggest building package in Aspen,” Julian Cornofsky told tame TIMES. “We go in to get the job done,” he explained. “We have a database of real-time, qualified buyers who are looking for specific properties. We have a three-month turnover period of a sale - this is from the listing
of the property to the sale of the property, as well as great aftersales service.” He also attributed the company’s success to their strong administration team and their prevailing marketing plans for properties, which entail exposure in high-end property magazines. Allegiance Property, he pointed out, can always be found on the back page of Property Press. Allegiance Properties has a combined market knowledge of 50 years in the industry. They specialize in residential property, sectional title and commercial property and are market leaders in lifestyle Estate property. They have a team of 15 professional and qualified agents who are NQF-affiliated and are looking to expand this already successful team. Allegiance Properties is here to serve the community and will be having a monthly interactive column in tame TIMES. This will enable residents to pose questions to the team and receive expert advice. As Julian Cornofsky often says, “Why see a board saying ‘for sale’ when you can see the board say ‘sold?’

PETERS CUPCAKE GRATITUDE: The Imperial Toyota team show off their cupcakes, which were made by Miss Earth SA 2014. After a well deserved break in Gordon’s Bay at her parents’ holiday house, Ilzé Saunders, Miss Earth South Africa 2014, is ready for an action-packed year of greening, educating and making a change at various MESA events. Fortunately, she has just been given the keys to a brandnew Toyota Auris Hybrid and so she can now do all her travels in a green vehicle. The official handover took place at Imperial Toyota in Parktown on 23 January, where Saunders told tame TIMES that she had the opportunity to drive a Toyota Prius for a week after her crowning and pointed out that she could actually smell and hear the difference between a hybrid and a normal fuel vehicle. “The Hybrid is so quiet you can actually smell and hear there is no fuel burning,” Saunders said, adding that she would love to purchase one in the future.

tame TIMES Ai julle, my hart is baie seer vandag.

Inaccurate road death statistics prevent reduction of road carnage
The year started off with the usual statement by the Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters claiming By Manny de that there was Freitas MP a decrease in fatal crashes and fatalities on our roads during the 2014 festive season. Peters claimed that there was a decrease of 50 fatal crashes and 24 fatalities in the period of 1 December 2014 to 30 December 2014. The Transport Department recorded over the same period in 2013, 974 fatal crashes and 1168 fatalities. For 2014 over the same period, 924 fatal crashes and 1143 fatalities were claimed by the Minister. The Minister and her department are exposing themselves with these stats, which are being manipulated to make the Transport Department look good. The 2013 festive season measuring period was 1 December 2013 to 7 January 2014. In 2012, the measurement period was 1 December 2012 to 10 January 2013. The measuring period for 2014 was from 1 December 2014 to 5 January 2015. Also, it is not possible for the Minister to present to the South African public road death figuress for the 2014 festive season when morgues across the country have yet to finalize their reports on corpse numbers. These stats take 30 days to consolidate. The Minister’s report ought to have followed the final reports from the morgues, rather than relying only on incident reports from the South African Police Services officers attending cases on the roads. The MRC (Medical Research Council)
does not produce regular reports on the status of road deaths in the country. Their last report was produced in October 2012, and according to that report, 17 076 South Africans were killed in road traffic crashes in 2009. However, the official report from the RTMC at the time had road deaths at 10 857. This is just one example of the extent of the under- or over- reporting problem. Even more alarming is the view taken by many in the transport fraternity and other road safety experts and monitoring groups (like the MRC) that these numbers, produced by the National Department of Transport, do not represent the true story of the horror on our roads. We have long cautioned against the National Department of Transport’s reliance on SAPS reports as an indicator of road deaths; it is an intrinsically flawed measure as it is susceptible to error and will often only represent the deaths recorded at a particular crash site that SAPS responded to, and not subsequent deaths arising from injuries sustained during a crash. There are more accurate ways of producing these statistics. In the Western Cape, fatality statistics are provided by the Western Cape Department of Health’s Forensic Pathology Services, sourced from mortuaries across the province. These statistics are collated from the victims’ cause of death, and are differentiated between the classes of fatalities: driver, passenger, pedestrian, cyclist and motor cyclist. Minister Peters had, in the past, committed her department to employing measures to collate road death statistics more accurately. The carnage on our roads cannot be properly tackled unless we have accurate and complete statistics.

Of as ‘n waterpyp in jou straat gebars het. DAYLIGHT THIEVING
Two cable thieves were arrested on 10 January by Moffatview SAPS thanks to alert community members. The two suspects arrived on the corner of Johan Meyer and Elizabeth Streets in Linmeyer and dug a trench. When asked by various residents what they were doing, each one gave a different story. The next day they continued digging. A resident from Regents Park drove past and recognized the two suspects, as they had dug a trench outside his house the previous week, before cutting cables out of the ground and loading them on to a white bakkie. It was established later that they had stolen the cables. The Regents Park resident was suspicious and contacted City Power, which dispatched their security staff, who observed that the suspects did not have the correct signage,
City Power reflective vests or any personal protective wear, as required by law. They also did not have a job card or a job number, but informed the security officials that they were working for someone called Justice. So the officials called Justice, who also could not give them a job number. They then waited for some time for Justice to come out to the site and produce the job card, but he failed to show up. If any resident sees any suspicious activity regarding power cables or digging without proper signage displayed, please contact GNG Risk Management Services on 0606173839 and they will investigate. SAPS can also be contacted on 10111. For any queries concerning the Moffatview Community Policing Forum contact Moffatview SAPS on 011 405 1500/46.

Two blue light gang hijacks Mondeor SAPS Sector 1 Manager Sgt Andrew warns residents using Kliprivier Drive between the N12 interchange and Swartkoppies Road to be on the alert for hijackings, especially after dark. This follows two recent hijackings on Kliprivier Drive involving a white VW Polo motor vehicle with occupants posing as JMPD officers who pulled vehicles off the road with a flashing blue light and then hijacked their victims on the side of the road. The vehicle is occupied by four or five African males, one of whom is in full JMPD uniform. Residents are advised to drive to their nearest police station or secure location on contact. The first case occurred on 16 January near Swartkoppies Road and the second, on 17 January between Bellaires Drive and Jordi Road (Panorama Shopping Centre). Both crimes took place at about 20:00. Harvesting your stem cells - what’s your take? By Karin and Brian Blignaut The latest buzz word for those of us into alternative health is “stem cells.” With our first grandchild on his way, we have read a great deal about the value of preserving the placenta and even the umbilical cord of the newborn so that stem cells can be harvested from them for treatment of any future illnesses or accidents during his lifetime. I spoke to Dr Wian Stander about all the possibilities in this new field of research and he informed me that even adults can now harvest their own stem cells and preserve them for medical purposes. Adult stem cells are selfrenewing cells that possess multi-regenerative potential. They have the potential to replace cell tissue that has been injured, damaged or destroyed by severe illness and chronic degenerative conditions. The benefit of stem cells is that they are able to replicate themselves repeatedly over time by recruiting an entire cascade of regenerative actions in the tissue where they are needed in order to repair and maintain. They can be used to generate healthy and functioning specialized cells which can then replace diseased or dysfunctional cells. The entire goal of stem cell therapy is to introduce healthy cells into the body that will then become integrated with your own cells and start functioning as your own cells in the organ system that requires them. Once harvested from you (autologous stem cell therapy) they may be used either to help with regeneration of our bodies holistically or injected into a specific joint or area to activate a healing response. This special “primer” treatment is referred to as Stomal Vascular Fraction therapy and is activated in your body once the area of inflammation

and degeneration has been detected by its built-in “signalling and homing mechanism.” Cells are then recruited into the injured joints or tissue to speed up your recovery process. As I mentioned before, we are both into alternative medicine to cure our over-50 aches and pains, as well as frequent injuries caused by falling off our bicycles. Brian was still suffering from a shoulder injury and I had severe foot cramping episodes so bad that I had to abandon a cycle race in December - to my great disappointment. So, on Saturday 17 January we went to visit the South African Stem Cell Institute (SASCI) at the Regenerative Medical Centre in Parys, Free State. Under local anaesthetic, we gladly donated some of our stomach fat. In a very modern and efficient FDA- and GMPaligned laboratory on the same premises, a injection was prepared for both of us from our own stem cells. Brian also donated some of his blood to prepare a new regenerative cellbased therapy called PRP or platelet-richplasma. This was meticulously prepared by the cell biologist on site and injected back into his injured shoulder. Within minutes of receiving the injection I had a warm tingling sensation in my feet – and, yes – believe it or not – all the cramps, stiffness and pain in my foot disappeared. Brian, who hurt his finger in his latest cycling accident, had the same sensation in his finger and yes, it is now no longer stiff and tender. As for me, I feel so energized – those of you having Strava, can follow me, and see that since Monday I have broken all my records on my usual route! We know that all has not been proven by research yet, and stem cell therapy is still in the experimental phases, mostly because
the big pharmaceutical companies are scared to lose out on the chemical-based medicine profits - but we are keen to try out new things and this experience did not disappoint us.
Our stem cells are now preserved in a stateof-the-art facility and we can use them at any stage and for whatever reason we need them in future.

White, Moreira and Graham also swam faster than they have ever done before in all of the events they swam in during the fourday gala. With these improvements and achievements at the end of the year, Perfect Stroke Swimming School is looking forward to an awesome 2015 for the coaches and swimmers.
Glenvista High School’s first week of 2015 went very well, although it was extremely busy, said the school’s media liaison officer Mrs Maritz. “Between issuing time-tables, textbooks, allocating register classes and running our Grade 8 orientation programme, it was a hectic week.” Wednesday morning began with a Quad assembly for Grades 9 to 11, and a thunderstorm that made the initial welcoming and division into register classes somewhat of a challenge, but fortunately the teachers managed to sort everything out. The grade controllers all
spoke to their various grades, time-tables were handed out in the register period and teaching started after a short break. The new Grade 8s were welcomed at the gate by the RCL and the Grade 8 grade controllers. They also had a four-day orientation programme that lasted from Wednesday until Saturday, with the last day being a fun day.

First house athletics
The first three days went well at Hoërskool President High School, with almost 1 300 learners up and ready for the school year. As with any other year, there was huge excitement among the learners at the first House athletics event. The staff worked hard to iron out all the challenges, but by the end of the first school day, everything was sorted out and ready to run. The new Grade 8’s, die “Rooi Miere” or Red Ants, had their trials for the athletic season on the second day, while the rest of President went on with academic work. On Friday, President was buzzing with excitement due the House athletics. The cheerleaders had the school going in no time, while the athletes did their best for their teams. First 2015 EFC fight at Carnival City
Nail-biting action awaits EFC fans on Saturday 21 February when the final reckoning takes place between lightweight champion Leon “Iron Lion” Mynhardt and former champion Don “Magic Man” Madge at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena. They have fought twice before, and on both occasions a controversial win was given to Mynhardt. This time Madge promises to win with a finish. EFC 37 includes seven actionpacked preliminary bouts, as well as the first ever bout in the EFC Women’s Division. Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated bouts of EFC 37 is the welterweight bout in which grappling phenomenon and current two-time EFC welterweight champion, Adam
Speechly, will defend his title against striking specialist David Buirski. In this, the first EFC fight night for 2015, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) megastar Darren Daniel also returns to the Hexagon to clash with hometown favorite JP Kruger, while Madiba faces M. Buirski. Gorimbo and Cheboub top off the main card at EFC 37. “We are thrilled to play host to the first EFC fight night of 2015. The question we understand that is on everybody’s lips is ‘will this be the night that the welterweight curse will be broken?’’ Do not miss EFC37 in February to find out,” says Michelle Smith, the Marketing Manager at Carnival City. EFC, the Extreme Fighting Championship, is the biggest Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization on
the African continent. Over 100 of the world’s toughest MMA athletes are exclusively contracted to EFC to showcase their skills in front of thousands of fans in sold out arenas. With 10 new events per year, each hosting at least 12 explosive bouts, EFC is a sports entertainment phenomenon which has captured the attention of passionate and loyal fans throughout Africa and the world.
