AK47s link ATM bombings

Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za The video footage of the Booysens Viva Cash & Carry ATM bombing, where two ATMs, an FNB and a Standard Bank one, were bombed on 23 October show the suspects were armed with AK47s. The victims at first described the guns as shotguns. This may provide police with a possible link to the Rosettenville ATM bombing in Bouquet Street the day before because those suspects were also armed with AK47s.

The two ATMs were bombed at 5:45 inside Viva Cash & Carry in Mentz Street, Booysens after four men entered the shop armed with pistols and AK47s. The owner of the shop told tame TIMES, “They told the customers to go out of the shop but kept all the employees inside and told them to go to the back. It took them about 10 to 15 minutes to detonate the bomb. It sounded like a hand grenade.” He went on to demonstrate the sound it made. Fortunately, no-one was hurt, but an undisclosed amount of money was taken. It is believed the suspects fled in a white BMW 3-series.

The Rosettenville ATM bombing took place at about 2:00 on the morning of 22 October on the corner of Bouquet Street. The five men involved were armed with AK47s and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money. “The monies recovered at the crime scene were full of ink,” Cst Rebecca Bila, Moffatview SAPS spokeswoman said, adding that, “No shots were fired and no-one was injured.” It was reported that a number of windows in Bouquet Street were blown out and that bystanders grabbed bank-notes lying on the ground at the scene before the police arrived.

Grudge leads to death

MURDER SCENE: A 33-year-old man was murdered after a vendetta.

SHOCK: Marcel Houston could not accept that his friend was dead.

A 33-year-old man was stabbed in the heart in Outspan Road, South Hills opposite Tony’s shop in what is believed to be the bloody end to a vendetta. According to the deceased’s house mate Marcel Houston, a notorious criminal named “Jumbo” stabbed his friend. “Jumbo has always been a problem is this community,” he said. “He was recently let out of prison and stays where that big drug raid happened recently. He stabbed him in the heart. One shot - he wanted to kill him.” When tame TIMES arrived on scene, Moffatview SAPS as well as Netcare 911 were already there, while numerous onlookers, including children, watched the scene. According to Houston, the deceased came home to change at around

Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za 13:00 and told him he was going to fetch his 8-year-old son from school. A few minutes later, people ran to the house, telling him about the altercation with Jumbo and his friend. The deceased’s girlfriend, who was very emotional, told tame TIMES that her boyfriend and Jumbo had had an argument two weeks previously, but that the disagreement was over. However, she believes Jumbo was holding a grudge against her boyfriend. Clr Fay Chame, the ward councillor of South Hills said, “Any crime that happens in South Hills is always related to drugs. I hope the police can do their work and find the killer and I urge the community not to lose hope in the police. They are doing what they can.”

Elder abuse

67-year-old lady physically assaulted by drunk man

– a shameful secret

Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za A 67-year-old woman, who has been a resident at Reuven Old Age Home for nearly ten years, recently became a victim of physical abuse at the hands of her neighbour’s 40-year-old son. In August the man, who was intoxicated, started screaming outside her flat asking her where his money was. After much harassment, she opened her gate and asked, "What money?" He then allegedly grabbed her by her throat, throwing her on the floor, bashed her head against the pavement and stepped on her chest. According to the abused woman’s daughter, other residents tried to stop him, but he was so aggressive that not even his parents could calm him down and he actually tried to throw his father over the balcony. The family did not press charges, as they were led to believe that the man was mentally challenged but when tame TIMES spoke to the social worker whom Reuven Old Age Home called in to assist with the situation, it was reported that he is mentally stable but has epilepsy and becomes aggressive if he drinks alcohol while on his medication. “This man should not be living with his parents in the bachelor flat and the supervisor of Reuven is not doing anything to get him removed,” the daughter of the beaten-up pensioner said. Supervisor Johanna Jacobs admitted that the man should not be living with pensioners in a government old age home. She explained that she can evict pensioners who are not abiding by the rules on condition that she finds alternative places for them to stay. “I am waiting for the social worker to find a home for the 40-year-old man,” Jacobs said. However, the social worker told tame TIMES that she had been unsuccessful due to the man being mentally stable and therefore not eligible for a mental home, and that his age counted against him. In the meantime, the 67-year-old lady lives in fear every day, locking herself up in her flat and not mixing with the other residents. “This is not how my mother should be living and the man needs to be removed,” the daughter said.

Sometimes the only things visible are the tears... Lizeth Kotze Lizeth.kotze@tametimes.co.za What is elder abuse? It can be defined as a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Types of elder abuse Physical abuse Any action against an elderly person that results in physical pain, injury or impairment

Neglect or abandonment by caregivers Failure to fulfil the role of caregiver, whether intentionally or unintentionally

Emotional abuse Emotional pain or distress caused either verbally or nonverbally

Financial exploitation Unauthorized use of funds or property belonging to an elderly person

Sexual abuse Performing any sexual act with an elderly person without their consent

Healthcare fraud and abuse Unethical practices by professional care providers like doctors and hospital personnel

Proving elder abuse can be difficult, since abuse can be subtle in nature. Caregivers could also explain away some reasons for concern. In some cases, symptoms of abuse can overlap with symptoms of mental deterioration. One should therefore be very careful before accusing someone of elder abuse, but should also not dismiss any allegation made by an elderly person. Aspen Nature Estate hosts a beerfest every year. This year South African Breweries (SAB) and suppliers of craft beer Swagga provided the beverages. The event was held under a marquee from 16:00 until 23:00, and brought out the hidden German in all the residents. As the beer tasting gained momentum, live entertainment was provided by The Raevans, a local South-based band, Lorraine Deans and Jon Dellinger. “Thank you to the residents who made the night memorable,” Andrea Scott, Aspen Nature Estate Events Manager said.

Badly bruised by nurse Angry patient writes:

I received terrible service from Netcare Mulbarton Hospital last week. I went to the hospital for a check-up appointment. I was told to have blood tests done, and I went to have my blood taken at the hospital. The nurse who took my blood was very unprofessional with the procedure. As she was filling the phial, she kept knocking the needle around in my arm. When she finished, my arm had a lump around the area where the needle went in. It had swollen to the size of a litchi. She quickly said it was fine and that I must put an ice pack on it when I got home. The plaster I was given to cover it did not even stick. I put an ice pack on my arm when I got home, but the swelling is still visible. The bruising that is there now is horrendous. I think the hospital should make sure they hire qualified staff, and make sure they do their jobs properly. Is this a new billing crisis? Norma Rudham writes:

There have been several letters of late regarding the billing crisis and some news headlines have referred to it as a “new billing crisis.” I am wondering if the original billing crisis was ever resolved in the first place as I certainly still have queries which have been outstanding for a long time. In this regard I recall that President Zuma in his speech earlier this year proclaimed

that he intended to resolve the billing crisis. Can we please find out from the powers that be what steps were taken resulting from President Zuma’s speech to resolve this billing crisis and, if there is indeed a new billing crisis, what progress is being made in attending to it? The public really are tired of the stress of involved in trying to liaise in this regard.

Adult rates for children under 18 Bassonia resident, Merle, writes: It irks the living daylights out of me that adult rates apply at the discretion of establishments. For example the JHB Zoo entrance fee for 3-12 year olds is R40 and for adults (anyone over the age of 12), it is R65. At Nu Metro, the prices differ depending on which movie is being seen, 2D, 3D, etc. but the fact remains that, over the age of 12, adult rates apply. Another establishment advertises a family package for a family of four. (“R515 - two parents and two children under the age of 16.”) Belonging to a family of four, with my one child being 14 and the other 17 years of age, I telephoned them to enquire about companies in their own right; for their own account. They are not part of Netcare Mulbarton Hospital. Please give me the lab name - I need to know which lab it was and I will then forward your complaint to the relevant pathology lab. My apology for any inconvenience caused.” PAINFUL: the bruise

the family package they advertise, only to be smugly informed: “You wouldn’t qualify for the ‘Family Package’ - you will have to pay the full rate; this is the way it works.” My 17-year-old is still a child, he is still in high school, he is still a dependant, we all live under one roof, we are still a “Family of 4” regardless. All these establishments, The Bill of Rights and the Children’s Act clearly define a “child” as “a person under the age of 18 years,” this being the reason they cannot buy alcohol, obtain a Drivers Licence, enter into any contract or even vote for their country.

DirectfromParliament Alberton vehicle pile-up could’ve been avoided The 48 vehicle pile-up By Manny de Freitas MP on the N12 in Alberton is an unambiguous wake-up call that we are in the midst of an epidemic. I have been saying this for years. The world is freaking out that over 3 000 people have died as a result of Ebola. This is quite right. There is proportional reaction and emotion from everyone. Yet unbelievably one hardly hears as much as a “peep” about the on-average 14 000 annual deaths on our roads. It is only when a dramatic and graphic crash such as this takes place that people take notice. Until government starts looking at transport holistically, road death statistics will continue to be astronomically high. These statistics started to move up sharply in the 1990s when business was forced to move their goods from rail to road. Rail had become so inefficient and slow that moving goods on rail was simply no longer an option for business. As truck sales, and their usage went up, so did death and fatalities. Government’s response to this epidemic was by making the problem worse. Previously, all rail infrastructure fell within one government entity. In governments’ infinite non-wisdom, however, they split rail operations in two: Transnet looks after the rail movement of goods and PRASA (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) focusses on the movement of people. We now have a situation where two entities have different responsibilities while using one set of rail infrastructure. While we have two government entities pulling in opposite directions as officials build their respective empires, we have more and more people dying every day on our roads as more and more trucks fill our roads countrywide. Government needs to immediately amalgamate all Transnet and PRASA operations. By doing this, it will ensure that planning is done holistically and in a coordinated manner. With this as a foundation, it would ensure planning is done holistically so that all services and operations become efficient, effective and economical. Business would then very quickly, and happily, move their goods on to rail and abandon their trucks. When this happens we will see a dramatic drop in road-related deaths as well as a slowdown of price increases of goods as they will be cheaper to transport by rail. We need action from the Minister now so horrific crashes stop.

Wind tears into Frances Vorwerg A gale-force wind ripped a large section of roofing off Frances Vorwerg School last Thursday, 23 October, leaving eight classrooms without a roof. The force of the wind not only removed a sizeable piece of corrugated iron from the roof, but also tore off the rafters, knocking them into the building next to the classroom. Part of the roofing was blown almost 50m away from the classrooms. Kobus Walker, vice-principal of Frances Vorwerg who, was attending a meeting at the school during the storm, described the

way the wind speed suddenly picked up. “I heard a rattling sound as the wind started to shake the roof. Then suddenly the roof came off. The wind tearing the roof off the building looked like someone opening a book. The wind bent the corrugated iron as simply as we might bend paper,” he said. This is second time in two years that the roof at Frances Vorwerg was blown off due to extreme winds. In November last year, wind tore off the same piece of roof. It appears to be a freak occurrence, since the roof was fully repaired after the first incident.

Robertsham Post Office torched with petrol “As a South African Post Office employee, I say to the CEO, isn’t it time you meet these people half way or give them what they want so they can stop hurting innocent people? You need to stop this bloodshed.”- Michelle Lakay Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za Employees of Robertsham Post Office, situated on the corner of Jasper and Lamston Streets, escaped death on 23 October when South African Post Office(SAPO) strikers stormed in, doused the counters with petrol, hit the glass panels with a hammer and set it alight. A case of public violence has been opened at Booysens SAPS and is currently being investigated. When tame TIMES arrived on the scene, the badly shaken SAPO employees were carrying burnt office chairs back inside the building. A shaken up Michelle Lakay said, “As an South African Post Office employee, I say to the CEO, isn’t it time you meet these people halfway or give them what they want so they can stop hurting innocent people. You need to stop this bloodshed.” The postal strike that has been on for several months is due to the implementation of the Post Office’s flexible labour strategy. “The reasons for the strikes centre on the appointment of casual workers in permanent positions, which the Post Office is implementing, using a staggered approach. This is in view of the difficult financial position the company is in,” Lungile Lose, the spokesperson for SA Post Office said recently. Another SAPO employee told tame TIMES, “About seven to 10 men walked into the post office and said in Zulu, ‘You are working while

we are fighting’. They poured the petrol on the counter and hit the glass with hammers. We ran to the back and locked ourselves in the vault and managed to get out the back. We don’t know how the fire was extinguished in the front.” Robert Mulaudzi, City of Johannesburg EMS spokesman, commented that CoJ fire fighters received a call but the fire was already extinguished by the time they arrived, and no injuries were reported. It is believed that security guards and bystanders put out the fire. Other SAPO employees who came to the scene, stopped the Robertsham employees from speaking to tame TIMES, saying it was a sensitive situation and adding that they could lose their jobs. However, this frustrated the employees as they felt the public needed to know what had happened. tame TIMES requested comment from the South African Post Office. Lungile Lose’s comment read: “The regional manager in the Johannesburg area arranged for the employees who work at the Robertsham Post Office to receive professional trauma counselling on 24 October. We are aware of the stress that they were under and we appreciate their dedication to render a service to the public, even during difficult times. The Robertsham Post Office will be temporarily closed for repairs. It is not yet possible to commit to a reopening date, as

the list of items that need replacement is not yet complete. We apologize to our customers for this inconvenience. The SA Post Office has obtained a court interdict against striking employees which makes it illegal for them to loiter within a distance of 1 km of a Post Office building or facility. With the help of the SA Police, this interdict is now being rigorously applied and we expect levels of violence and intimidation to drop significantly as a result.

In Bloemfontein, eight striking workers have already been arrested for intimidating a Post Office employee. They will appear in court on 6 November. While negotiations continue to address the grievances of striking workers, the Post Office is focussing on restoring operations to normality. Today, the major mail sorting facilities in Gauteng are open as a result and we are hopeful of further improvements.”

Scrapyard owner offers R30 000 bribe A Roodepoort scrapyard owner offered a R30 000 bribe to City Power’s Intelligence Division and the South African Police Services (SAPS) recently after they found 395 kilograms worth of unaccountedfor cables. The cables displayed the distinctive markings of City Power. The bribe was denied and the wouldbe briber was arrested together with four accomplices. They appeared before Court last week on charges of theft, possession of stolen property and bribery. These arrests were made possible after a tip-off was received. In total 14 arrests were made in two separate incidents. The arrests are part of City Power’s ongoing investigation to clamp down on cable theft, which costs the South African economy over R5 billion annually. In another operation, while conducting a routine patrol on cable theft hotspots, members of City Power’s intelligence unit and the SAPS arrested nine suspects in Meadowlands, Soweto, while they

were trenching for underground cables. Approximately 76 kilograms worth of unstripped cables was recovered. The response team and the police also confiscated picks, shovels, hacksaws and bolt-cutters. City Power has prioritized the fight against cable theft. Through organizations such as the Association of the Municipal Electricity Undertakings of Southern Africa (AMEU), City Power together with organized business, municipalities and law enforcement agencies have agreed to lobby government to classify cable theft as an act of treason owing to its debilitating effects. This is one of the resolutions from panel discussion at the recently held 64th Convention titled: Should cable theft be classified as economic sabotage? The water cuts that affected communities in Pretoria and Johannesburg due to cable theft are a grim and chilling reminder of how the scourge of cable theft can impact negatively on communities and businesses if it remains unchecked.

Humeshen Naidu, A gold Reef City patron and a first year IT student, had a rewarding day when he competed in the final of the inaugural Tsogo Sun Gauteng Roulette Knockout at the newly refurbished Silverstar Casino conclusion on 18 October as he was the overall winner and won a whopping R350 000. Competitive roulette action played out between Tsogo Sun’s three Gauteng properties – Montecasino, Silverstar and Gold Reef City – over five weeks, with a substantial prize pool of R850 000 providing a great incentive for roulette-lovers to buy in for just R100. “The tournament was a great success, with roulette enthusiasts boosting the initial prize money by R350 000 to reach R850 000,” Steve Hight, Director of Gaming for Tsogo Sun said. One hundred percent of all buy-ins contributed towards

the eventual prize pool, indicating the overwhelming response of Gauteng residents to the tournament. The top 10 players from each property were selected for the final, based on their positioning on the leader board. Of the R850 000 prize pool, R350 000 was won by Humeshen, representing Gold Reef City; R125 000 was awarded to Rubethiran Moodley from Edenvale, representing Montecasino; and R90 000 was won by Gideon De Koker from Alberton, representing Gold Reef City Casino. PEPCM CELEBS: Neil Andrews, Juanita Mitchell, Fiona Nay and Paul Buckby. Front: Clive Maistry, Alfred Ntombela and Carol Tshabalala

BARRIER EIGHT: Juanita Mitchell drew 8 for Glorious Jet who will be running for Thembakazi Primary After Care Centre and has been partnered with tame TIMES. Owners, trainers and a bevy of celebrities and media representing their charities were on tenterhooks at the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile (PEPCM) Barrier Draw held on 22 October at Emperors Palace. tame TIMES was thrilled to be partnered with the celebrities representing the charity Thembakazi Primary After Care Centre, Brian Mitchell and his beautiful wife Juanita, who are residents of Glenvista and readers of tame TIMES JHB South. All hopes are now on Glorious Jet to win the PEPCM so the aftercare can take home R100 000 of the R550 000 set aside for all sixteen charities. The final field of 16 horses for the Gr 2 R600 000 event was announced and was followed by a ceremony to determine the barrier draws for the race as well as the celebrity and charity that each runner will be representing. None of the charities will go home empty-handed, as even those represented respectively by the last five finishers will receive R20 000 each. The PEPCM race will be run on 1 November at Turffontein Race Course. This eagerly anticipated race meeting also features the R3, 85 million Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Cup, the Gr 3 Graham Beck Stakes, the Gr 3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes, as well as the two richest Maiden Plates in South Africa worth R250 000 each. Racing. It’s A Rush will help drive this charitable cause right up until race day. The gates for the race meeting open at 11:00 and entry is free. There will be a children’s play area on course and adding to the entertainment will be a live tribute show to the Bee Gees. To book a table call Agnes on 011 681 1702.
