Matric Day mayhem Two chickens were allegedly brought to Mondeor High School on 26 August by a group of Matric learners and kicked around until they died. Thereafter, learners ran around the school, pepperspraying learners and teachers on what is known as their last school day before they write their preliminary examinations. Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane told tame TIMES on 27 August, “The Department is outraged by the alleged conduct of Grade 12 learners at Mondeor High School.”

Matric Day mayhem Continued from page 1 “The school reported the alleged incident to the District, which has already identified learners who were involved. Their parents have been contacted and have been invited together with these learners to a disciplinary meeting scheduled to take place this coming weekend.” The meeting took place on Sunday night at 17:00. Media were not allowed to attend the meeting, but tame TIMES has been told that the Matric dance was cancelled and it was said the school will deal internally with the children who attacked teachers. The chicken incident was discussed, but the school did not admit that it happened. It is also believed that preliminary examinations have been posponed. tame TIMES received a letter last Tuesday from an anonymous source stating, “I am disgusted to inform you that at about 13:00, a group of unidentified learners brought a live chicken on to the school property, bound its legs and proceeded to kick it about the school field until it was dead. In addition to this, learners were assaulted with the usual eggs and flour, but on this occasion learners were restrained and were pepper-sprayed in their

Several teachers fell victim to cases of physical and verbal abuse from learners ranging from Grade 10 to 12.” When tame TIMES contacted Mrs Nicolaou, Mondeor High’s principal, to confirm if this incident had occurred, her reply was, “No comment.” Jolene Beyleveld, JSPCA Public Relations, told tame TIMES, “Our chief inspector will be speaking to the relevant parties, including the principal. We are outraged at the alleged conduct of the learners in question and will take appropriate action where necessary.” Several sources have been in contact with tame TIMES but do not want to be named, due to fear of losing their jobs. They said the chickens were brought to the school in schoolbags and that the learners said, “Next time it will be a goat.” “Teachers are in two minds. Some feel it is their responsibility to control the children, whereas others are honest enough to say they just cannot control the children,” another source said.A parent told tame TIMES, “This has to be sorted out. This time it is a chicken, but next time it could be a human being.”

Helping dogs look their best Tails and Paws Pet Salon is committed to providing excellent service to all their four-pawed customers, including the free grooming each week of a variety of “fur babies” from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s Johannesburg shelter. Morgan Smith, one of the owners of Tails and Paws, explained that her journey with the AACL began in 2013 when she volunteered to groom the dogs, as a way of giving back and helping these abandoned four- legged friends. “I do feel that it may help them find homes faster, as they get groomed to look spick and span.” Smith feels that grooming the dogs alone is not enough, so she decided to put a hamper together in order to raise funds for the AACL. The hamper, valued at R1200, was won by Charlotte Sleith. “I would like to thank her and all my other loyal and caring customers, for helping to make this small fundraiser possible,” Smith said. Public Relations Officer Heather Cowie confirmed the AACL’s appreciation of the kind assistance received each week by the Brackendowns based dog parlour: “Thanks to the love and devotion shown by Morgan and her team at the grooming parlour, our dogs come back to the AACL looking and smelling like ‘designer pooches.’ ” This obviously greatly enhances their chances of finding new homes, as they are able to put their best paw forward. “Extra special thanks to Tails and Paws and their clientele, for supporting the hamper fundraiser.”

Being made to feel guilty for doing my job This past week has been a tough one. Two weekends ago I attended Mondeor High School’s fashion and variety show which I thoroughly enjoyed and was very impressed with, but then this past week I was informed of the alleged chicken and pepper spray incident. In one week I have had to write two very contrasting stories about the same school and - what makes it worse - I went to this school, and now I have been labelled as an ex-learner who has betrayed the school. Please note that I do not like writing negative stories about any school, but it is my job and my duty to inform residents of what is happening. When Glenvista High and Jordao College were in the news, I wrote about them, because of the public’s right to know. If I chose what stories I wrote based on my affiliation to an organisation, school or person, I would seriously have to re-think my moral standing and my choice of career. I can understand that no school wants bad publicity, but in my opinion this incident does not reflect on the school but rather on the parents of the learners who allegedly hurt the chickens, and the way they have been brought up. What would reflect badly on the school is if they were trying to cover this incident up. A colleague of mine said to me that maybe we are not supposed to be journalists because, as journalists we should not feel guilty for doing our jobs - but we do. I do feel bad as I have loyalty towards that school, but I cannot favour the school and let incidents like this be swept under the carpet just because I matriculated from Mondeor High. Once again we have to wait for the authorities to determine the results of this incident and see what actions are taken. Ending on a totally different topic Daryl Impey has been cleared from the allegations of doping and all I can say is – “Thank the Lord!” I wish Daryl all the best to re-build his career after this very unfortunate incident but, as the saying goes, “No man can stop God’s plan for you,” and undoubtedly God’s plan is for Daryl to ride a bicycle.

House robber turns out to be a SAPS officer They then assaulted the victim, tying up both of his hands with a plastic packet, and choking him with an electric object. An off-duty constable from Fairlands SAPS was shot and arrested on 25 August after committing a house robbery in Lang Street, Rosettenville. The robbery victim was asleep when his door was kicked in by three unknown men who woke him up and told him they were police officers. They then assaulted him, tying up both of his hands with a plastic packet and choking him with an electric object. When the house-owner screamed, two of the suspects fled in two cars - a Mercedes Benz and Kia Picanto with unknown registration numbers - but the third suspect, the constable from Fairlands, did not make

it into the getaway car in time and was left behind. The victim asked for help from some Metro Police officers on patrol who chased the suspect. The “moonlighting” constable then drew his firearm and pointed it at the Metro Cop, who shot him. The Metro Cop went to the fallen suspect, only to discover that he had a police appointment certificate on him and was using a Z88 police firearm. The suspect was taken to Moffatview SAPS. The complainant alleges that he heard the firearm shots and also noticed that the following items were stolen: a plasma television, Sansui and Blackberry cellphones and R49 000.

Biyela suspended The Gauteng Health Department has been rocked by the suspension of its Chief Financial Officer Ndoda Biyela. According to Jack Bloom MPL, DA Shadow MEC of Health, staff have not been informed why he has been suspended on full pay, but it is suspected that he faces corruption allegations. Ndoda was appointed as finance chief in September of 2012 after serving for a period as the acting Head of the Gauteng Health Department. “His suspension could be related to a linen contract reportedly awarded in May last year to Emperor Commodities for R5.1 million without going to tender,” Bloom stated. “The company then raised

its price to R18 million, importing linen which should have been procured locally.” Biyela reportedly wrote in an addendum that tender requirements were waived because of the urgency to procure linen for the Jabulani and New Natalspruit Hospitals. Bloom is greatly disappointed that yet another senior official faces serious disciplinary action. “This department has suffered from a high turnover of top officials who have left under a cloud,” Bloom said, adding that Biyela’s suspension should not be shrouded in secrecy. “Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu must inform us why he is suspended and what arrangements are being made to ensure that financial controls are enforced.”

Mondeor SAPS is looking for any witnesses who saw the accident that occurred on the early morning of 20 August on the Klipriver and True North intersection, Mulbarton in which a D&D Tactical vehicle was involved. If you are willing to give a statement, please contact W/O Joubert on 083 529 5378.

Lion cub triplets Treat your feet welcomed Advertorial

Laurelle Williams

laurelle@tametimes.co.za

GET THAT FEELING: by using the products offered at Sorbet.

ROARING FUN: Male white lion triplet Letaba is the main instigator of pranks. Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is ecstatic after acquiring lion cub triplets Letaba, Sabi and Jubba, born on 12 April 2014, and donated to the Johannesburg Zoo by a farm in Thabazimbi. The playful triplets, a male and two females which have just come out of quarantine and been given a clean bill of health, are on view to visitors at the zoo. The media thoroughly enjoyed meeting the trio last Wednesday, taking full advantage of great photo opportunities in the enclosure and observing the playful antics of the cubs, especially those of the white-furred Letaba, who took the opportunity of grabbing a journalist’s notebook when it was left on a rock. It was only after being given a few pieces of meat that Letaba was eventually persuaded to let go of the book. The popular Anglo Gold Lion enclosure has been fitted to meet the specific needs of the new cubs, which will form a critical part of the zoo’s conservation and education

programmes. “We are so excited to have the lion cubs. It has been over five years since the zoo has had cubs and our adult lions are ageing. These cubs are of a new bloodline, which will ensure the continuation of the species in our collection,” said Agnes Maluleke, the curator responsible for the management of the big cats at the Joburg Zoo. The Zoo currently has seven adult lions that have outlived their natural life expectancy for the wild and have not bred in the past five years. The new cubs will offer visitors to the zoo another opportunity to contribute to conservation, while providing residents with a game reserve experience on their doorstep.

Spring has arrived, so it is time to beautify those feet to make your summer sandals and peep-toes look that much better. Sorbet Glenvista now offers a new medi-pedi that will soften and silken your feet in time for spring. This 75-minute treatment is a pedicure without all the filing – instead, an alkaline powder is mixed with water and then massaged into the feet, removing all the dry skin and nourishing cracked heels. The massage-in paste is first applied to the bad areas on the feet, then spread to other areas. The feet need to be kept wet continually during the massaging in order for the alkaline to dissolve and remove the dead skin. After the procedure, the feet are cleaned and melanoplex drops and pigmentation oils are applied to them, and they are wrapped in plastic and wet compressors. “This is to nourish the skin,” Violet Muzira, one of Sorbet’s nail technicians explained. The medi-pedi is offered with Gelish, paint or no paint. A medi-pedi home care treatment can also be purchased. This is only one of the many treatments that are offered at Sorbet. Another great offer is their free Dermalogica face mapping skin analysis,by a professional skin therapist, who will then recommend the correct facial treatment and/or skincare products for you. The therapist will actually feel your skin, analysing it in 14 different zones, and samples of the suggested products will be given to you for testing before you purchase them. The Sorbet Glenvista store is bold and bright but also tranquil and inviting, with friendly professionals on hand for all your pampering needs. Letters CoJ billing staff have no skill or knowledge Clr (PR)Peter Stewart Ward 125 writes: The City of Johannesburg billing problems on residents accounts are becoming more complicated to resolve than ever before. In some instances it is so complicated that it takes residents days to analyse so the account makes sense before they can even log a query on the account with the city’s billing department. Examples of these problems are: 1. An account holder paid for services every month and never had a problem; however, when a new smart meter was installed, they received an astronomical account with consumption being backdated up to 248 days. Even though the account was paid up to date, the resident was forced to pay triple for services. 2. A customer paid her account religiously from January to June, but was hit with a substantial account in August, back-dated again to January, forcing her to pay for the services again. The matter seems to be so complicated that not even the billing staff at the Metro can resolve the issue or even understand the complication. Residents are now so frustrated that they give up. As stated by one resident they have to suffer with daily survival and then be loaded with the unwanted extra stress imposed by the City on them with threats of pre-termination notices or even termination without notifications. Residents cannot even take time off work to resolve issues with their municipal account for fear that they might lose their jobs if they have to go and sit at the Council for a full day or, in some instances, days. The matter has become extremely stressful and there is no doubt that even the staff at billing have neither the skills nor the knowledge to assist with the complicated queries, placing the burden on councillors to try to assist the residents.

Physically challenged face e-tolls struggle Manny de Freitas MP, Shadow Minister of Transport, writes The more replies I receive from the Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, to questions I posed her, the more muddled she shows how the e-tolls issue really is. I asked the Minister about what criteria and reasons are used to include people with disabilities in the paying of e-tolls. People with disabilities are forced to pay e-tolls. This is over and above the very high costs that these people already pay for their mobility. As someone who was confined to a wheelchair for a number of months after a

serious car crash a number of years ago, I am aware of the trauma, pain and additional costs that one has to endure when one is trying to make life more “normal.” The Minister confirmed that the physically challenged community must also pay for the e-tolls and that SANRAL is “considering representations regarding the exemption”. There has been no further commitment in this regard. This is an example of how e-tolls is not only a financial burden but is also a heartless one that does not care.

Eyewitnesses needed On Saturday 13 July 2013, around 5:30, there was a motor vehicle accident on Klipriver Drive between Van Beek Avenue and Impala Road. A white 1997 Opel Corsa Sport with two young ladies in it was headed south down Klipriver Drive, towards Liefde En Vrede when the accident took place. One of the two

ladies sustained multiple and very critical injuries. The attorneys handling the case urgently request that anyone who saw what happened, or caused this accident to take place, should please contact Mandie Roets at Elmarie de Vos Attorneys on 016 455 3606 or jeattorneys@telkomsa.net.

Sundowners lapa destroyed

DAMAGE: The Sundowners Lapa was destroyed by a fire last Friday. On 29 August the lapa at the Sundowners Pub, in the Kromvlei area, burned down. Spencer Martin, owner of Sundowners pub, explained that he arrived at the pub at 11:00 on Friday morning, and the staff were doing stock take when they

02 September 2014

noticed a small fire in the lapa area. “The wind was blowing too hard and the fire spread very quickly,” Spencer said. He told tame TIMES that he immediately phoned 10111 but they advised him that he needed to phone 112.

According to Spencer, the Ekurhuleni Fire Department and the City of Johannesburg Fire Department first disagreed about which area the pub falls under. Eventually Ekurhuleni Fire Department responded to the fire. Three tanks arrived on the scene, but they ran out of water and could not pump water out of the swimming pool, as they did not have a pump. William Ntladi, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services Spokesperson, said that they will be looking into the matter. City of Johannesburg Fire Department also responded to assist and the fire was finally extinguished. Nana Radebe, City of Johannesburg EMS Spokesperson, confirmed that the Kiblerpark Fire Department was dispatched to assist Ekurhuleni Emergency Services on the scene. Neither Radebe nor Ntladi could comment about the fact that the Ekurhuleni tanks ran out of water. Fortunately none of the staff were injured and the main building of the pub was unharmed.

One man ran away, but Cst Ledwaba chased him and caught him in Japie Street. He then searched him and found an unlicensed firearm with the serial number filed off. The suspect said he had bought the weapon from someone called Alfred, whom he refused to point out to the police. The two men were arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS.

18 to 24 august

Eighteen people were injured after a taxi and a car collided head-on along the R82 in Walkerville on 23 August at around 07:18. Exact details of the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police investigation and comment. Netcare 911 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the roadway obstructed with the twisted frames of the vehicles and some of the injured

still trapped in the wreckage. While firemen used the Jaws of Life to free a passenger from the front of the taxi, paramedics climbed into the remains of the vehicle to stabilise him. After all the injured were treated at the scene, paramedics transported them to various hospitals in the area for further medical attention.

SAPS holds career day for youth The Social Crime Prevention Unit of SAPS Johannesburg Cluster held a career day on 27 August at the Nasrec Expo Centre. The JHB Cluster is made up of Mondeor, Moffatview, Langlaagte, Sophiatown, Brixton and Booysens SAPS. Three hundred and eighty-five Grade 9 learners from various schools within the cluster area attended on the day. These included Die Fakkel Hoërskool, Diversity High and The Hill High from the south. The purpose of the day was to show the learners all the possible careers in the public sector, and to give them an idea of what options might suit them. The SAPS, JMPD, EMS, fire safety, correctional services and various non-government organisations delivered talks to the learners about careers in their sectors. This was followed by a demonstration by the SAPS of how their dogs apprehend suspects and sniff out drugs. Exhibitions were set up around the hall and the learners interacted with the state employees. “It is important to show the next generation the wide spectrum of jobs available in the government,” said Warrant Officer Cornelius (Social Crime Prevention), who spearheaded the initiative. “They are the country’s future and it is up to us to show them the way.”

Burger Perfect Put the sparkle rewards schools back in your pool Advertorial

COMPUTER PRIZE: Richard Zivurawa (Burger Perfect branch manager), Pat Van In (Mulbarton Remedial School’s principal and Luigi De Camillis (Burger Perfect owner).

The 1st of September has come, which means it is time for pool parties, braais and fun weekends in the sun. To ensure a sparkling and healthy swimming pool this season, visit The Pool Team (Glenvista) to get their remarkable 3-step chemical treatment that works every time. The 3-step chemical treatment is made up of the three key chemical products: aqua pro oxidiser, aqua pro algaecide and aqua pro clarifier. The aqua pro 3-step chemical treatment sanitises, clarifies and kills algae and all other infestations and build-ups, leaving your pool sparkling and blue.

The Pool Team has been supplying the trade since 1973 and, with 14 branches based all over Gauteng, they ensure that you will find all your swimming pool requirements and more. The Glenvista branch has been keeping all the pools in the south sparkling for the last five years, priding themselves on their honesty and value for money. They offer a wide range of swimming pool products and great customer service. The Pool Team offers free water testing and the best advice; call the Glenvista branch on 011 432 5555 to put the sparkle back into your pool.

Mulbarton Remedial School was the lucky recipient of an Acer computer system worth R5000, as they were the winner of Burger Perfect’s in-store competition. The Glenvista based take-away eatery ran the competition at five schools: Glenvista High, Glenanda Primary, Harvest Christian College, Mulbarton Remedial School and Malusi College. The school that redeemed the most vouchers when purchasing the specific combos on offer would be the winning school. For every voucher

redeemed in-store, Burger Perfect will donate R2 back to the school. These cash handovers will take place in the upcoming weeks. “The prize comes just at the right time as we celebrate our 10th anniversary next month,” Pat Van In, principal of Mulbarton Remedial, told tame TIMES, adding that the computer will most probably be used as a teacher resource. Luigi De Camillis, one of the owners, explained that the competition is their way of giving back to the community.

Every woman dreams of a beautiful fairytale wedding. The wedding dress is usually the first item on any bride’s checklist. However, there are many other aspects that need to be planned in advance, such as the venue, a preacher and the wedding contract. Here are a few pointers to guide you. Remember, planning a wedding is a big project that involves a lot of money; the more organised you are, the better the outcome will be. Bruidsgids 2013 gives the following pointers:

CONGRATULATIONS: tame TIMES layout artist Stephanie Tepper married Pieter Els this past weekend. Everyone at tame TIMES wishes Mr and Mrs Els a beautiful life together.

1) Research costs first and establishes how much you are, realistically, willing to spend. 2) Prioritise: the venue sets the date and place, and venues are often booked in advance. It is therefore a good idea to sort this out first. The wedding dress is something that you can leave until approximately six or four months to the date, to make sure that the dress will fit you. If you order a dress that has to be shipped in from overseas, you must leave enough time for shipping. Sometimes the dress is too expensive to buy at once and you might want to pay monthly installments over a period of time. 3) Dividing the costs: who is willing to contribute to your wedding? If you can establish this early on, then you budget and can allocate tasks to the different contributors. 4) When you book a photographer, it is wise

to do a practice photo-session to determine whether you are satisfied with the style. Many couples use the same photographer for their engagement shoot to make sure that they are satisfied with the result. The last thing you want is to feel unhappy when you receive your final photos. At the end of the day, photos and video memories are all you have left. 5) Do not spend money saved for the wedding. This will set you back and you might struggle to make your budget work. 6) Lastly, remember to have fun. The journey to the chapel should be a rewarding and exciting experience for the bride and groom. Do not let the wedding overshadow the real meaning of the day; that you and your partner are vowing everlasting love to each other. The wedding is a mere celebration of this commitment.

Rethink Tradition

Try cocktails in lieu of tea, barbecue instead of buttered scones. Think about themes:

Bridal Shower:

Who’s Invited to a Bridal Shower?

Beach Shower,

Why spend your Saturday afternoon yawning over the ribbon bouquet when you can hang with a crowd far more entertaining than Mom’s country-club friends? Go ahead and attend those must-attend functions, but think about putting together a party that includes the guys too. Here’s the dirt on throwing a Jack & Jill party.

The Idea

A couple shower is closer to a cocktail or dinner party than it is to a bridal shower. Female and male relatives, as well as close friends, are invited. The party still revolves around gifts, but they’re presented to both the bride and the groom, and generally they are a mix of home goods and guyfriendly gadgets. The shower can range from an afternoon barbecue at your parents’ place to a cocktail party at your favorite restaurant or bar. There are no hard-and-fast rules about planning, though, so do what feels best.

The Guest List

You might want to limit the guest list to the couple’s contemporaries who consider girl/boy proximity a given. Steer clear of people who may be offended by a coed shower, but don’t neglect loved ones who wouldn’t want to miss out on these festivities

Asguestsarrive,playanamegameso thateveryonegetsintroducedandfeelsatease.

laurelle@tametimes.co.za Mondeor High School recently hosted their 2014 fashion and variety show, Mondeor’s M Factor, with the theme of reality shows. An entertaining and professional show was put on, with all participating learners giving their all. An added bonus was that the school will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in October. The competition was fierce in all categories: comperes, singing, dancing, teen section, thematic models, designers, photographic models and, especially, the main category of male and female models. The toweringly tall Damien Daniels became Mondeor High’s 2014 male model of the year and his partner, Tshepiso Tsita, the 2014 female model of the year. The design category for outfits made out of recyclable materials is always fascinating, and this year creativity was pushed to the maximum with Huang Miao Chen’s creation, which tied with a beautiful paper cup skirt and plate umbrella construction. Mondeor High must be congratulated for a very enjoyable show. Please visit tame TIMES Facebook page for all the photographs.

Chiefs to clash R100 000 raised for National Horse Trust with Pirates Lebo Mosolodi

lebo@tametimes.co.za

HORSE-LOVERS: Some of the guests at the National Horse Trust charity race day.

KICK-OFF:The MTN Top 8 final between Amakhosi and Amabhakabhaka is expected to be an interesting affair. The Soweto Derby Dream Cup final MTN Top Eight between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is set to take place on 20 September at a venue that has yet to be confirmed. Pirates and Chiefs showed little respect for other teams when they walloped their opponents with an avalanche of goals to book their place in the final. The Sea Robbers, as Pirates are affectionately called by their supporters, reached this point after walloping BidWits 3-1 at Orlando Stadium. Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus scored the opening goal, which was cancelled by Wits forward Getaneh Kebedi. Lehlohonolo Majoro came from the bench and scored two spectacular goals to make it 3-1 in favour of Orlando Pirates. Then the Bucs marched to the final on a 5-1 aggregate score.

Amakhosi continued their winning streak at the expense of Platinum Stars Football Club. George Maluleka scored a free kick goal spectacular to open a goal feast for the Naturena based team. Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane tapped in a second goal after getting an immaculate cross from his team-mate Tsepo Masilela. Katleho “Killer” Mphela put the final nail in the Dikwena’s coffin when he scored the third goal towards the end of the second half. The final score was 3-0 and the aggregate score was 5-0 in favour of Chiefs. The Premier Soccer League has advised soccer fanatics to buy their tickets in good time as both teams command huge fan bases. This is the first cup final in the new season between South Africa’s two main football powerhouses.

The National Horse Trust, a fundraising body dedicated to preserving the lives of horses, held a successful charity race-day at Turffontein Racecourse on 23 August, raising over R100 000. Focusing on the Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and KZN units, the National Horse Trust assists in carrying out vaccinations, deworming and farrier work in order to improve the overall health of horses and donkeys. Since the organisation relies on sponsors, the charity race-day is an important event which empowers the National Horse Trust to

continue carrying out its work, ensuring that horses receive essential healthcare support, particularly in rural communities. Organiser Lesley Delaney commented, “As a racehorse owner who adores horses, I know that it’s costly to take care of them. Many horses which aren’t privately owned remain neglected without proper healthcare. Through the support of sponsors and the generosity of Turffontein Racecourse we are able to alleviate the plight facing so many horses”. For more info visit www.itsarush.co.za

NOT GUILTY: Former Glenvista resident Daryl Impey was cleared of all doping allegations last Thursday. Daryl Impey, the first African to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, was cleared last Thursday of the doping allegations that shocked the world in July when it was announced that he had committed a doping violation by using a diuretic called Probenecid. In a statement posted by Daryl Impey on his personal website, the cyclist said, “I finally was able to prove that this was a case of cross-contamination and I was also cleared of any fault or negligence on my part.” At the hearing it was proved that Impey had taken the banned diuretic through a contaminated product bought at a pharmacist through no fault of his own. It has been reported by The Star that, while Impey was in Durban, he went to a pharmacy to buy empty gelatine capsules to fill with bicarbonate of soda, because bicarbonate of soda helps buffer the effects of lactic acid and he was planning to use this for the South African Road Race Championships. The pharmacist, however, told him he did not have any capsules in stock. Later, the pharmacist found some capsules and called Impey, who went back to buy them; but, shortly before serving Impey, the pharmacist had dispensed Probenecid to another customer and his hands had contaminated Impey’s capsules. At the hearing, till slips showing the time of purchase from the pharmacy convinced the hearing that Impey had not ingested the substance on purpose. tame TIMES spoke to Impey’s father, Tony Impey, owner of Tony Impey Cycles in Bedfordview last Friday. He said,

“This is very good news; however, it has been trying. This is his (Daryl’s) life that has been put on hold.” He added that Impey was leaving for Canada the following night and was trying to get everything ready for his trip as well as being inundated with requests for interviews. Tony Impey thanked tame TIMES,“Thank you for believing in Daryl and supporting him.” tame TIMES was fortunate to speak to Impey on Saturday. “It is a huge relief. My name has been pulled through the mud,” he said. He explained that social media was the worst, with many horrible messages written about him and to him. “I never responded but I did read them and it was hard to read them - especially knowing I was innocent,” Daryl Impey told tame TIMES. Impey said he has been training these past two months, although it was hard to focus with the allegations hanging over his head. When asked about the pharmacist, Impey said, “He was sorry for what he did and offered his assistance straight away, accepting responsibility.” In his personal statement Impey thanked his wife, family and team ORICA-GreenEDGE, friends and fans who sent him kind, supportive messages during the ordeal. “I am thrilled that I could prove my innocence for all of you who stood by me.” The cyclist hopes to return to racing, and hopefully to compete before the World Championships in September. “I re-iterate my stance against doping and I will continue to race clean throughout my career. Right now, I am just really happy that I can be a bike-rider again and do what I love most.”

Renowned para-archer Shaun Anderson has started a project with Frances Vorwerg School to introduce the sport of archery to the special needs learners of the school. Anderson lost the use of his left arm in an accident in 2004. In 2010 he took his first shot with a compound bow and fell in love with the sport of archery. After making headlines for being the first South African para-archer to compete against able-bodied archers in the World Championship in Warsaw in August 2013, he is on the fast track to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. Despite the many hours he spends practising, Anderson jumped at the chance to help the school. The project at Frances Vorwerg School is, according to Anderson, his way of helping the children learn that they too are capable of doing anything. “These kids are told by society that they are not capable. This will give them an opportunity to prove to themselves and other people that they can do anything they put their minds to.” Anderson, in collaboration with Prof. KT van Warmelo and Barbara Manning, secretary of the South African National Archery Association, has donated the bows, arrows and butts needed to start teaching the children to shoot. The first part of the process is coaching the educators to teach the children to shoot correctly. According to Anderson, each child is a unique case and because of this it is best for a teacher who knows each one, with their abilities and disabilities, to teach them the basics initially, after which Anderson will handle the more advanced training himself. “The simple act of drawing the bow and shooting, regardless of hitting the target or not, has a pronounced effect on these kids’ lives,” said Anderson. “The boost to self-confidence this gives the children is incredible. Finding that they can perform these actions inspires them and their friends to reach new heights.”
