BIRDING IN THE SOUTH Letter by Chrisna de Ru
Now I’ve already confessed about my bird obsession (on that note, see the wonderful letter and photo by Chrisna de Ru on this page), another fixation of mine is collecting. From the usual, including coins and stickers, to the most bizarre such as mielie cobs and flies (it was all for the sake of art). I’m passionate about collecting books, comics, stationary, television series and figurines. My most prized figurine is my 18-inch talking Willy Wonka figure – at a flick of a switch you can hear the famous chocolatier confess about his magical chocolate waterfall (it’s a real treat). My dream is to get an Indiana Jones figure in my paws. My latest collecting obsession is Pop Vinyl figures - those cute plastic critters that come in little boxes. What do you enjoy collecting? In other exciting news, tame TIMES turns six on Wednesday 01 April. The newspaper has grown tenfold over the years - having started with one paper in 2009, the company now boasts six tame TIMES titles. To celebrate our birthday, tame TIMES would like its readers to nominate a community hero. One lucky reader can win R1000. Just tell us why you think they are a hero. The best story wins. It’s with great interest that I read your editor’s letter in the tame TIMES dated 24 March 2015. I therefore decided to share our excitement with you. My husband Leon and I enjoy bird watching and often visit the Kruger Park where we’ve had great sightings. We have quite a shady garden here in Mulbarton and feed the birds on a daily basis. We have a great variety of the more general species visiting the garden. Over the past few months we’ve spotted the African Paradise Flycatcher on a couple of occasions. A few years ago we had a resident Spotted Eagle-owl. However, the bonus was when we had the most spectacular sighting of a Greyheaded Bushshrike on Sunday 08 March! Being a very shy bird it was amazing that we could view him, and Leon (he’s an avid photographer) could take pictures. He posted the pictures on the Facebook page of SA Birders and had interesting comments. Enjoy!

BE AWARE Letter by Anthony Naude We live in Glenvista near Biggarsberg Road. My 18-year-old son Jeremy was walking down Biggarsberg Road towards the Glenvista Checkers centre around 16:15 on Monday 02 February. As he approached Spitz Road, he was mugged. Our helper tells us the same thing happened to another helper in the area some time last year, with exactly the same tactics. This means that they are regular operators at the same spot, doing the same thing. Jeremy said a tall thin black male, possibly around 50, walked over to talk him and said his name was Harald. Harald started to ask Jeremy about a possible donation of clothes for a charity. As Jeremy was listening, another man grabbed him from
behind and held his arms back. They took two cellphones out of his pockets and then ran off. Harald was smoking and was wearing dirty blue jeans and a red striped shirt. The second man was of average height, black and chubby, probably in his 30s and looked more smartly dressed. Jeremy was quite shaken and incurred a cut to the ankle, but he is otherwise fine. We took Jeremy to Mondeor Police Station which did not seem to want to take a statement. They suggested he reports the phones to Vodacom for blocking. I have reported this to the CPF, TBRA and D&D Tactical security teams. We have many joggers using the Biggarsberg Hill - please take care and, probably, it’s best not to carry any desirable items on your run.

COMMUNITY CONCERNED OVER NETCARE: A FOLLOW UP
After publishing the article on the quality of service and the physical state of the Netcare Clinton Hospital as well as the Netcare Union Hospital, tame TIMES received an overwhelming response from the community. tame TIMES received several phone calls, emails and personal visits from various community members regarding their experiences in both hospitals, and the general consensus was not of a positive nature – the majority of residents complained about the hospital’s quality of service as well as the lack of maintenance and hygiene. tame TIMES also posted the story on its Facebook page which, at the time of going to press, reached over 11,000 people, got 21 Likes, 40 comments and was shared 48 times. in tears from the pain caused by “GO AWAY” stare and delivered an long with a bleeding head! EMAILS Dear tame TIMES, I read your story about the Clinton Hospital and I just want to let you know that we also had a bad experience with them. My grandmother was there and the way they treated her was shocking. The reason I’m writing this today is because at this moment my cousin’s son has been in the Clinton Hospital since Monday and the way they get treated makes a person angry. He is six months old and his mother is taking his temperature. They have been waiting for the test results since Monday and still nothing. My cousin goes home to sterilise his bottles because the staff don’t do it. I will not recommend this hospital to anyone. Can’t believe that the Netcare group is so bad in their service and then we get charged an arm and a leg for medical aid. Marlene Zwarts With regards to your article on the Clinton Hospital, I thought you would like to hear my complaint which was sent directly to the Clinton Hospital of which I got no response until I went to Regional, only then did Mr Mhlongo reply. We received shocking service and the total bill was close to R25 000! We could have stayed at the Hilton and received better service with private callouts from the doctor. Netcare Clinton and Netcare Union Hospitals move swiftly to enhance service to patients Esmé Abrahams, General Manager of the Netcare Clinton and Union Hospitals, has apologised unreservedly to the patients mentioned in the tame TIMES article published on 24 March. “We are most concerned to hear that some readers of tame TIMES who either themselves received treatment, or whose family members have been treated in our hospitals, feel that our service has not met their expectations. We wish to assure them that it is our objective to treat each and every patient and their families with absolute care and dignity and to provide them with quality care.” Abrahams added that the feedback received has provided management and staff of both hospitals with the opportunity to re-assess every aspect of their services and make improvements where their service delivery fell short of patient and visitor expectations, such as the overall cleanliness of their facilities and their interaction with patients. “I am sure that our patients and their family members will find the actions taken both meaningful and appropriate. More importantly, I really hope that it will provide our patients with an indication of how valuable their feedback is to us,” she says.
IMMEDIATE IMPROVEMENTS ALREADY VISIBLE According to Abrahams, the hospitals have implemented a number of interventions to prevent a re-occurrence of the experiences outlined in the tame TIMES article. “Short-term actions that will immediately be visible to anyone visiting the hospitals include a full assessment of all the public areas by the hospitals’ maintenance teams which have done all the necessary repairs. We have also employed additional cleaning staff to work specifically in the public areas where high traffic volumes, particularly during and after visiting hours, have impacted on the
cleanliness of these areas.” “Visitors who smoke immediately outside the front doors of the hospitals, where there are clear signs that prohibit smoking, will find that our hospital security team will be adopting a very strict anti-smoking stance. We have also identified a number of public areas where re-upholstering was required and are fast-tracking the refurbishment of these areas.”
MEDIUM-TERM PLANS The growing demand for private healthcare in southern Johannesburg has resulted in an unprecedented influx of new patients to both Netcare Clinton and Netcare Union Hospitals in recent years. “We are most thankful for the considerable support we are receiving from the communities that we serve and will continue to make every effort to ensure that we remain at the forefront of healthcare delivery while providing quality nursing care and other services within world-class facilities,” notes Abrahams. “We are also mindful of the fact that the emergency department at Netcare Clinton Hospital has outgrown the needs of our community and we are therefore in discussions with the Department of Health (DoH) to obtain permission to implement a number of changes that will significantly improve patient flows,” she says.
LONG-TERM PLANS According to Abrahams, there are some exciting developments afoot for both hospitals in the not-too-distant future. She, however, believes that it would be premature to make these plans public at this stage. “What we can promise the people of Alberton and its surrounds is that Netcare will continue to invest in the communities that have supported us for so many years. We will also ensure that our facilities are impeccably maintained and managed until such time as we can make our big announcement,” she promises.

“We really encourage all our patients to provide us with feedback on the care they receive as it assists us in evaluating and improving our service on an ongoing basis and enhances the hospital experience of our patients,” assures Abrahams. “There are comprehensive patient feedback mechanisms in place within the hospital and we encourage our patients or their families to raise any concerns they may have with us while they are in hospital, or as soon as possible after leaving the hospital. We strive to maintain close contact with patients, with senior staff members doing daily rounds to patients. However, they may not see all patients every day as some patients may be undergoing treatment, tests or may be sleeping at the time. In addition we also offer patients the opportunity to complete a survey on an iPad while in hospital; this data is captured daily, providing our hospital management team with rapid patient feedback which enables them to respond promptly.”

•Last year Africa’s first structural heart centre, specialising in the percutaneous repair of leaking heart valves and various other cardiac anatomical abnormalities by means of minimally invasive surgery, was established at Netcare Union Hospital. •In 2012, heart surgeons at Netcare Union Hospital successfully used a minimally invasive technique to repair a leaky artificial heart valve during an hour-and-a-half long procedure. The procedure was undertaken through a small puncture in the patient’s groin, using a catheter and wires to reach the leaking valve by means of 3D, realtime transoesophageal imaging for precise visualisation. It was the first time that local doctors in the private sector had performed such a procedure.

Democracy comes of age in a star-laden series of musical celebrations on – fittingly – The Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre up until 12 April. In light of this vision, Ward 124 has identified focus areas that they intend to tackle in the coming months: Housing: The poor state of Council-owned old age homes, such as Reuven and Glenesk, as well as the issues of allocation at the Selby Hostels, are just some of the housing matters that we will look into. Senior citizens are not treated with dignity when their units are not maintained by the City. Least of all, the Booysens informal settlement continues to grow and requires further urgent attention. We would like to thank all NGOs that have assisted the settlement thus far. House hijackings are also becoming a serious problem in the ward, which is contributing to urban crime and grime. We will soon provide a way forward on this particular issue. Crime and substance abuse: This matter was raised as a major concern for residents in Ward 124. We await the feedback on the petition submitted to have
Service delivery: General service delivery relating to dumping, roads, parks and so on also needs to be tackled. We will expose the failings of the departments and the officials that fail to deliver to residents. We will take this to the Mayor and Chief Whip if we need to. Unemployment: The ward has a high unemployment rate due to the large number of people moving within the ward. Some have been in employed in the Expanded Public Works Programme which pays only a stipend and does not offer long-term or full-time employment. We need to bring investment back into the ward that will result in jobs that are labour-intensive. We also want the youth to visit the Innovation Hub in Marshall Street, which helps young entrepreneurs get established. They need sustainable work to grow and create employment. 5FM DJ Rob Forbes, in association with Plascon, spent Saturday 14 March adding a splash of colour and beauty to the Yenzani Children’s Home in Noordwyk, near Midrand. Along with a number of his fans he recruited using social media, he rolled up his sleeves and painted the home using Plascon’s beautiful but tough premium quality interior paint, which will last up to 15 years. Yenzani Children’s Home is a youth care centre that provides love, care and shelter for children who need it most. The event is part of the Plascon 15 Year Quality Guarantee Challenge, which sees Plascon donate up to 100 litres of premium interior paint as well as up to R10 000 worth of contractors’ work to charity each month for five months.

A recovering heroin addict’s story “Have you ever tried brown sugar?” This was the question that led to the downfall of a successful young man who went from being a well-paid qualified draughtsman, website developer and project manager who owned two cars and had his own place in Benoni, Ekurhuleni to washing taxis, guarding cars, robbing people and sleeping on the street. Keo Sebego is today, nevertheless, a walking miracle. Articulate, intelligent and likeable, he belongs to the 5% of heroin addicts who recover. Admittedly, though, this took 11 stints in rehab and BEFORE he is currently seeing both a psychiatrist and a neurologist to deal with “a lot of psychiatric problems.” He has been prescribed antipsychotics, anti-depressants, stabilisers and tranquilisers and his doctors expect his mind to take at least a few years to heal. Fortunately, he has no permanent physical scars from his 12 years on both heroin and crack cocaine; but his family relationships are in tatters and he has no friends left from his past. So, how did this sharp-looking, educated 26-year-old from Mafikeng, who grew up in a good home with three siblings and two loving parents, end up on drugs? It started, Sebego told tame TIMES, after he finished high school and moved to Jo’burg to enrol for tertiary studies. His parents found him an apartment in Auckland Park and enrolled him in a college to study graphic design and website development. Within a few months of moving into the apartment, Sebego met a “random guy” who came to his flat to ask for a cigarette. He stayed in the same apartment block and invited him to visit if he ever felt bored. Soon after that, Sebego took him up on his invitation and found his new ‘friend’ with “another guy, listening to rap music. They seemed tense – until they asked him if he had ever “tried brown sugar” (done heroin) – and the promising young graphic design student made the worst decision of his life. A drinker since his high school days, he soon added heroin and crack cocaine to his substance-abuse list. “I carried on and on,” he says. “I enjoyed the high and didn’t see the problem. In the beginning it was fun and it didn’t take anything away from my life. I had the money to sustain my habit; I could still function; I could still go to college and take care of myself. I was still on good terms with my family and I still had friends.” In his own words, Sebego was “never willing to listen, because I thought I had all the answers. I thought I was smarter than the whole world.” So, it is not surprising that he “became dependent without realising it.” He was “in denial” and not prepared to call himself “a junkie.” “I saw ‘them’ at the robots and said I’d never be like that. I went to a private school and thought I was better than that. But I ended up on the streets, washing taxis and guarding cars. I also used to rob people at night – I befriended them and then robbed them. All that mattered was my next high. Personal hygiene went out the window.” Sebego lived a life of lying, cheating and stealing; alternating his place of work and abode between a taxi
rank in the Benoni CBD and Hatfield Square in Pretoria. He had street friends in both places, but was devastated one day when he was recognised by a former schoolmate who had been a junior when he was in matric. He had to hit rock bottom before he realised that his excellent education and “very good background” could not protect him from the drugs that were destroying his life. “Drug addiction,” he says now, “doesn’t choose – it doesn’t care whether you are rich or poor, white or black. I had friends from some of the most elite families in the country that were drug addicts and no one knew about it, but I was in rehab with both the very poor and the very wealthy.” Eventually, Sebego “found himself in God” and “filled the void inside” that he had previously tried to fill with “women, sex, money, drugs and alcohol.” He has committed his life to “serving others in the ministry of helping other drug addicts” and is the happiest he has ever been. He has discovered that he is happier when he is not “within [him] self, when [he] is not the most important person.” Sebego’s advice to young people is interesting. “Be open-minded,” he says, “and appreciate that adults are not as clueless as young people think they are. We young people have this YOLO attitude. But because you only live once, do it properly – do it right.”

Heroin use blocks the brain’s ability to perceive pain and produces a ‘downer’ effect. Common or street names: smack, H, skag, junk, brown sugar, horse, and black tar. Heroin is a drug that can be snorted, smoked, or injected into the veins. As heroin addicts lose the desire for personal hygiene, needles are shared which could lead to the transmission of HIV. The abuser quickly builds up a tolerance which means that more of the drug is needed to get the same effect. Experts say heroin is the toughest drug to beat - the rate of rehabilitation from this drug is less than 5%.

SUPER SOCCER AT RIETVLEI Supersport United Soccer Schools has proudly opened its doors in the south of Johannesburg at the newly built astro soccer fields located at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. The Rietvlei Soccer Park offers soccer training, holiday camps, corporate and social soccer leagues, birthday parties, soccer events and field hire. The Supersport United Soccer Schools’ unique coaching and playing technique aims to give players aged five to 18 years the best start in football, with all-year-round training. They want the game of soccer to become more skilful, entertaining and enjoyable both to play and watch. To do this, they have changed the way children are coached in the game, with daily group training sessions, advanced technical team coaching, one-on-one coaching and fun holiday camps. The Supersport United Soccer Schools training sessions are offered daily from Monday to Friday from 15:00 to 19.30 with different age groups at different times; and on Saturdays from 8:00 to 9:00. Bring your child down for a free session. This will give you and your child the opportunity to see and experience the Supersport United Soccer Schools development, skills and technical training, and you can chat to the coaches to assess what level your child is at and what he/she needs to improve on. Based on this, your numbers of days and session times will be confirmed. Supersport United Soccer Schools The South will be hosting a holiday soccer camp for boys and girls aged five to 13 years during the Easter school holidays from Monday 31 March to Friday 10 April at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. new friends and improve their level of play. “The camps are a great way for young players to develop their skills and have fun playing the game under the watchful eye of our Supersport United Soccer Schools coaches,” says Brendon Lohan, owner of Supersport United Soccer Schools The South. “We touch on the fundamentals of techniques of the beautiful game of soccer and introduce young players on how to improve their skills with some of the Supersport training, giving them a taste of what the Supersport United Soccer Schools are all about. The soccer camps are tailor-made for juniors in a fun, safe and friendly atmosphere.” Toni Mackrell of Rietvlei Zoo Farm says, “We are thrilled to have Supersport United Soccer Schools training and school holiday camps at Rietvlei Zoo Farm, as it is the perfect environment and a great way for the community to get involved with soccer in a safe environment.” The corporate, social and ladies soccer leagues are run from Monday to Friday from 19.30 and are a six-a-side game that is made up of five players in field, one goalkeeper with four substitutes; therefore having a maximum of 10 players per team. A game consists of 40 minutes (20 minutes each way with five minutes half-time). The cost includes a qualified referee and soccer bibs. All games are played with a futsal soccer ball. All players are encouraged to wear their team soccer kit and shin pads.
