laurelle@tametimes.co.za The rain might have been pouring on the morning of 14 January but that did not dampen the spirits of the eager 2015 Grade 1s on their first day of school. Outside every school streams of vehicles were parked on pavements or any open space they could find so parents could witness their offspring’s first day of their school career. Parents walked in with their children to find their desks and once the school learners were settled, the parents went outside and watched their children from the window, hesitant to leave. The Grade 1s were kept busy

Truck of Love and JOY dogs
The JOY Dogs were proud to be associated with the Radio 702 and Standard Bank Truck of Love Initiative last year in December. The three dogs brought smiles and joy to the faces of all those who met them. The residents at the Ithokomeleng Association for the Care of the Aged and Disabled Home in Alexandra were particularly taken with Oscar, especially Mama Marg who runs the Home. The children at Orlando Children’s Home were surprisingly not scared of the dogs and enjoyed seeing them perform their well-known tricks of reading cue cards and barking out their ages. It was an exciting day for all and the Truck of Love dispensed much needed groceries and bedding and, of course, some toys for the children.

Last week schools started, and even though this brought much joy to proud parents and excited children (see page 1and 3), it also brought much frustration to residents who stay very close to schools. Residents in The Broads Street are very annoyed (read pg 4) and even had a parent tell them that their driveways are council property so they have no right to tell them not to park there so the residents can access their garages. On Wednesday I experienced the traffic chaos as I went to schools to go take photos. I wanted to go get photos at Glenvista High but at 7:20 I changed my mind after sitting behind cars for about 15 minutes to drive 200 metres. I would have had to park many blocks away in order to find a parking and then walk to the school. This was also the case with many other schools I visited, so I ended up parking far away and walking to the school. Plus, it was raining. But now the question is - what is the solution? Children need to be dropped off at school, but at the same time residents also have the right to have their driveways free of cars blocking their way. I can understand the residents’ frustration as I live across the road from a nursery school in Meyersdal and at times I also have to wait a while before the congested traffic eases down as parents drop their kids off. In this situation politeness and respect is not optional - it is a must. If you are blocking someone’s driveway, you are in the wrong and you should apologize and move as quickly as you can. This is a problem at most schools in The South and amicable compromises need to be made. After all, we are a community.

Parents are generally busier than ever these days and so are their schoolgoing children. This can make decisions about extramural activities difficult to make. Although extramural activities are important at school level since they contribute to the development of many characteristics that are fundamental to children’s growth into adulthood - including teamwork, sportsmanship and accountability - participating in too many activities can have negative effects and leave children feeling tired and overwhelmed.

How many activities are enough?
Throw-in-the-towel syndrome
Elise Olivier, a child and educational psychologist from Northcliff in Johannesburg recommends the following: - Select no more than two activities per year for children under the age of six. - Older children should preferably take part in one seasonal team sport and one other activity that they pursue throughout the year. - Music and art lessons should also be considered as extramurals.
What do you do if your child is determined to do an activity but gives up on it after only a few lessons? Unless the activity genuinely causes great unhappiness and/ or emotional problems, experts believe that your child should continue for at least one term. It will teach them to persevere and that participation and performance demands hard work and dedication.
Choosing the right activity
- allow your child to take on too much - force your own childhood dreams on to your child - use the school’s extramural activities programme as a babysitting service - fill your child’s weekend with activities - forget your child needs time to rest
Your child should have an input when deciding on what activity to choose. An extramural should meet the following criteria: - have value - be fun and enjoyable - encourage socialisation - boost your child’s confidence
Don’t:

GOLDEN RULE: Extramural activities are meant to be fun for all involved.

THE BROADS: traffic a nightmare Concerned The Broads resident writes:
It is with great interest that the residents of Mulbarton have been watching the developments surrounding the proposed school in Glenvista near Stegman Road, and the response of Councillor Paul Smit. We too oppose the building of yet another school in our suburb or any neighbouring suburb - as he correctly intimates, the addition of such a school materially lowers the value of the neighbouring properties. However, this is only the beginning of the problems experienced by residents PROBLEMS INCLUDE: TRAFFIC- with no traffic law enforcement. Parents park the roads full at all hours, while trying to secure the closest parking to the gate so that their child does not have to walk too far. Parents stop in the middle of the road and block the intersections of The Broads and Kirby Beller, as well as The Broads and Dereham, doing U-turns as well as pick-ups and drop-offs. At the start of this year it has taken 25 minutes to drive the 200 metres to our gate, with rude and obnoxious parents blocking driveways. In addition to the private traffic you have commercial traffic in the form of bus and minibus traffic. During Glenvista High sporting days buses park The Broads streets full, causing significant congestion. The Kumon extra lesson centre has no perimeter fencing and parents park as close to the road as possible, making entry into the intersection of Kirby Beller and The Broads very difficult to negotiate, with visibility curtailed by cars parked on the kerb. You have students who are inept in processing basic road rules, such as “look before you walk,” as well as those students that drive themselves, performing wheel spins up and down the road. NOISE-we have to listen to screaming kids all morning, particularly at Malusi and their neighbouring nursery school. Glenvista High serenades us with school announcements all morning on their intercom – to irritate us further they have employed an announcer with the most awful voice. We hear all school bells, as well as the noise pollution from their Marius Robertson Hall, which they lease out from time to time to private functions. A few cars collecting children from Glenvista High play music so loud that the bass causes our window panes to resonate loudly, disturbing our peace.
20 January 2015
Top models of Glenvista Natacha Thompson, owner of Figures Models SA Glenvista, would like to congratulate all her students on their amazing achievement at the 2014 Model of the Year finals. The Glenvista branch had 20 top-scorers, five second places and one winner. “Every single student shone like stars on the stage and made Figures Glenvista very proud. The competition this year was very tough but the Glenvista students stood out and placed very well,” Thompson said.
neighbouring a school. They have to contend with extra traffic, additional noise from noisy school activities, as well as students and parents who have absolutely no regard for the residents of the street which they enter as guests. As the residents of Mulbarton, particularly those living on The Broads we have had to deal with Glenvista High School, Kumon extra classes and the Malusi School for a number of years, without any support from the school owners/principals, Metro Police, SA Police or the city council/councillor. ENVIRONMENTAL - each and every afternoon residents are tasked with collecting the litter left behind by parents cleaning out their cars’ filth on our lawns, kids dropping papers and tins as they walk by, or after their picnic on our lawn waiting for their lift. We are also left with the stench of a smoked hookah/hubbly bubbly. Malusi School has recently chopped down old trees in their yard without consulting their neighbours for consent. We suspect this is to build additional blue classroom shacks, much like they have done at the nursery school they own next door to their premises. Informal traders have also set up shop, selling items conducive to the increase in litter and pollution - not to mention the fact that the location of Glenvista High School was originally earmarked to be a nature/ bird sanctuary and we, the residents who have lived here in excess of 35 years, have been forced to accept the building sans any form of meaningful consultation. The King III code calls for an “Inclusive stakeholder approach;” however, the respective bodies at all three institutions named herein appear to have ignored the legitimate rights of the neighbouring community in which their businesses operates. Our attempts to interact with the schools have been met with incompetence, arrogance and complete avoidance. Clr Paul Smit told tame TIMES, "I will be requesting an appointment with the principal at Glenvista High next week for others issues and will raise and revert back when I have had the meeting." The letter has been sent to Glenvista High and Malusi College for comment however the Kumon extra lesson facilty was not open however a message was left. Are you a parent dropping off your child or one of the frustrated residents? Tell us how you that propose this issue is resolved? E-mail laurelle@tametimes. co.za

tame TIMES is excited to announce our 12-week Transformation Challenge, in partnership with Mr Martin Dewee. In the spirit of a healthy lifestyle, we will be publishing health-related articles, from nutrition to exercise. Remember to enter our competition and you could be one of the 40 lucky contestants to be part of this fantastic challenge. Who is Martin Dewee? My name is Martin Dewee, a former four-times South African Natural Heavy Weight Body Building Champion. I took up boxing at the age of 10, relocating to Johannesburg nine years later where I turned pro. My boxing career was cut short, because I became a fashion model and actor, and eventually worked on 11 international movies. After winning my natural bodybuilding titles, I began my anti-drug road shows throughout high schools in South Africa speaking to over 350 000 youngsters on the dangers of steroids and recreational drugs. One of the many highlights during this period was receiving the Alberton Senior Sportsman of the Year award, which was presented to me by Fanie de Villiers.
I published my first book, Drug Free Muscle Training in 2004, and my latest book Slowing Down Father Time and two training DVDs during 2014. [Check out Martin Dewee YouTube or Google] I am proud to say that I will be writing a variety of health and wellness articles on a weekly basis for the readers of the tame TIMES. These articles will cover subjects like nutrition, training, supplements, injury prevention and rehabilitation. The controversial use of performance enhancing drugs by many young rugby players will also be discussed and there will be training tips for females, teenagers and senior citizens. I am honoured to announce the 2015 tame TIMES 12-week Transformation Body Challenge which will officially kick off on 16 February 2015. A number of private gyms throughout Alberton and the South have collectively agreed to allow members of the public a three-month contract at a lower than normal rate. This challenge is open to all readers of tame TIMES, and 40 lucky readers will be sponsored with a 3-month gym contract, a starter pack consisting of a male or female training DVD, training manual and health nutritional plan. For more details on this transformation challenge go to www.tametimes.co.za.

BELINDA DAVIDS: AS WHITNEY HOUSTON IN THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL After debuting with a sold out six-week run in Joburg last year, The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show starring Belinda Davids, will be returning to the Joburg Theatre for a limited season from 22 January to 15 February. This brilliant concert featuring South Africa’s own Belinda Davids is equal parts fun, touching and uplifting. In addition to having a voice described as “jaw-droppingly similar” to the pop diva, Davids openly acknowledges that Houston is her personal idol and was the original inspiration for her own career when she began singing at the age of 14. New Zealand, Singapore, Canada and the USA have already hosted sold out performances in the show’s first year of touring. Davids will again be directed by Showtime Management CEO John Van Grinsven Snr. and joined on tour by the production team responsible for the worldwide hit show Michael Jackson HIStory starring Kenny Wizz. Carpooling – a great option
Nicky Vakaloudis, SOJO’s CEO, writes:
Julle ken mos daardie Engelse sê-ding van ‘’sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me’’?

The New Year is in full swing and already you may feel that there are not enough hours in your day. One way of not only saving time but also money is by creating a carpool to make the school run easier. Carpooling is an arrangement among a group of parents in which each owner takes turns driving a group of children, including their own, to school. BENEFITS OF CARPOOLING YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL: 1. CONVENIENCE Optimally, you could only be responsible for driving the carpool once a week which will save you some time in the morning. 2. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY It is a good way to reduce your carbon footprint and take better care of the environment. With fewer cars on the road, there is less pollution. 3. SAVING MONEY It is no secret that petrol is expensive. With carpooling, you save money on petrol since you do not have to drive your kids to and from school every day. 4. RELIABLE TRANSPORT Not every school has a reliable bus system. With a carpool, you know when the transport is going to arrive, and if there is a setback they will call you directly. 5. FRIENDSHIPS Carpooling is a good way to make friends, not only for the students, but for parents, too. For kids, they will benefit from being able to walk into school with classmates every day. For adults, the relationships established through carpooling can transition into very real and valuable friendships. HOW TO CREATE A CARPOOL After identifying the interested parties, hold a meeting will all the parents to discuss and agree on the following: - Pickup times and locations - Driving route - It is a good idea to maintain a routine, with all parents driving the same basic route. If there is an emergency, other parents will know where to find you. - Driver schedules HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY 28 JANUARY 09:30 - a talk by Kay Montgomery on the fun plants, the good plants and the bad plants, at The Floreum, Johannesburg Botanic Gardens, Olifants Road, Emmarentia. These must be printed and distributed to all the carpool members. Contingency plans This is important in case of sudden changes in driving schedules. If a driver cannot make a day, it is his or her responsibility to swap with someone else. Vacation dates and arrangements Emergency contact information and procedures Late policy Establish rules for late-comers and decide how long to wait.
IMPORTANT DO’S AND DON’TS: Do not do errands when you are on duty Drive only from point A to point B. Pick up your dry cleaning later. Never use your cell phone when driving If you must make a call, pull over. Maintain your car Make sure your car is gassed up and ready for the road and keep it clean. Lay down the law On the first day you drive, spell out your road rules. Rules might cover such things as rough-housing, yelling and whether or not you allow eating and drinking in your car. Password If you are not going to be driving on a particular day, remind your own child who will be. Come up with a password. If every driver and child knows it, a stranger will not be able to trick kids into getting into the car on the pretence that he or she is filling in for the usual driver. Pickup location Establish a pickup spot where all the kids wait together for the car-pool driver. Drop-off policy Wait for each child to enter his or her home before driving away. Insurance To protect yourself, carry liability insurance. Documentation A list of children’s names, ages and gender, their parent’s names and contact details should be distributed among all parents involved. Also keep a copy of each child’s allergies or medical problems.

Back to work: keep safety in mind
It is the New Year and you are either eager to start work or still dreaming about the holidays. Either way, as you return to work, it is important to keep security top of mind. Whether you are returning to your old job or starting a new one, Clive Humphrey, Managing Director of ADT Central Region, said now is a good time to refresh all precautionary routines that might have grown stale. When starting a new job, it is always wise to take a practice drive to the office before your first day, familiarizing yourself with the route and any possible crime hotspots on the way. It will also give you an accurate idea of how long it might take you to reach the office, which allows you to give yourself enough time to reach the office safely. Rushing to work is never a good idea, both in terms of road safety and general awareness of your surroundings. Once you have arrived at your destination, be sure to park in a safe area that is not isolated. Survey your surroundings before getting out of your car and locking it. Be sure to keep all valuables, such as handbags or laptop-bags, pinned close to your body - and never talk or
SMS on your cellphone while walking. This makes you an easy target. Once you have reached the office building safely, consider introducing yourself to any security staff who may be on duty. Ask someone to show you around the building and have them point out where the emergency staircase, fire hoses and panic buttons are situated. It is also a good idea to save all relevant security numbers on your phone in case of an emergency. Be alert when driving home, especially at intersections. By the end of the work day we are generally feeling fatigued and less aware of our surroundings. So, keep an eye open for anyone who might be following you, and if you notice anything suspicious contact the police or your security service to meet you at home. Survey the area before driving into your property. Never become complacent, even though you might have driven the same route to work many times. Staying alert and aware of your surroundings is the best bet to getting to and from work safely.
Driving a stolen vehicle A man was arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle in Summer Crescent, Moffatview. Reservist Sgt Smith was patrolling when he noticed a white Jetta driving in front of him. The member tested the registration number of the vehicle through radio control on the SAPS enquiry channel. The vehicle tested positive as a stolen vehicle - a white Hyundai with a Kempton Park SAPS case number. The member pulled over the vehicle and informed the driver that
the number-plates on his vehicle were those of a white Hyundai that was reported stolen. The driver mentioned he was repairing the vehicle. The member checked for the license disc and the chassis number and it was not there. He then checked the engine number and it tested positive for two different, stolen number-plates. The driver was arrested and taken to Moffatview SAPS; and the vehicle was taken to Aeroton.

St Declan’s School for Boys officially opened it doors on 13 January during an inauguration ceremony at which Principal Roger Looyen cut the ribbon. All the boys had a special welcome, with each of their names engraved on rocks placed down the aisle of the hall. Looyen later said these rocks would become sacred as they held the names of the first boys who ever attended St Declan’s. Grace Trinity, their sister school, also added to the loving welcome as each Grace Trinity teacher wore a shirt with the words, “Big Sister to a little Mister.” Their big sisters in the Grace Trinity Glee choir even sang Katy Perry’s Roar to make them feel valued and welcomed. Reverend Duncan Muller prayed over the
children, as well as the teachers, and said a boy needs a true north and that goes hand in hand with St Declan’s chosen verse Proverbs 3:6 “In all your ways acknowledge him, and He will direct your paths.” After all the formalities the boys went up to their classrooms to meet their teachers and get acquainted before school officially commenced the next day. St Declan’s focus is on monastic schooling, as owners Derek and Debbie Robertson believe the best academic results are achieved this way. For more information please visit www. stdeclans.co.za

NEWS IN A Shocking!
It is believed that dog-fighters have forced children as young as nine to imitate real dog fights, placing bets on which child will cause the most injury through biting and scratching. Inspector Wendy Willson, from the special investigations unit at the National Council of SPCAs, was called to a school in Springs in June to see if they could do something about the problem there. Willson said the school principal was concerned that pupils were returning from break-time with torn clothing and injuries. Teachers then discovered the children were fighting each other in dog-fighting role-play, while other pupils were placing bets on who would win. This is the first such case reported internationally. News reports say a former junior school tennis coach recently appeared in court following a road rage incident in which she allegedly used the K-word and shocked a woman with a Taser device. The reports specify all this drama was over a parking space! (news24.com)
Puppy love drives huge rescue operation
A pair of pups trapped in an underground storm water pipe in Avoca Hills, Durban, were rescued on Thursday after a nail-biting five-hour operation. The dachshund puppies had to spend the night in the 150mm diameter PVC pipe under their home after their owners failed to locate them – despite digging a 1m trench and cutting open a section of the pipe. The SPCA and fire department which were called out to the scene also battled to find them. A private rescue outfit, Rescue Tech, using a specialized camera which they inserted into the cut-out section of pipe, eventually spotted them and a deeper trench was dug. They were hauled out, much to the relief of the owners, the large rescue team – and the pups’ mother. (iol.co.za)
Beagle found on Mars Prince of Wales pub’s bill addressed to Charles
BERLIN – The European Space Agency says its Beagle-2 lander, which had been lost on Mars since 2003, has been found. ESA said in a statement Friday that new photos taken by the high-resolution camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show the lander partially deployed on the surface of the Red Planet. Beagle-2 has not been heard of since it separated from its mother ship, but ESA says the images prove the entry, descent and landing sequence did work and that it landed successfully on Mars on Christmas Day in 2003. The British-built Beagle-2 was launched on ESA’s Mars Express orbiter and was supposed to look for life. After the project failed, two U.S. spacecrafts landed on Mars and sent back many pictures and extensive scientific data.

A pub in London called the Prince of Wales was sent a demand for an unpaid gas bill of more than £1 770 (R31 138) - addressed to Prince Charles. Landlord Terry Gaskin (57) thought it was a wind up when he read the shock demand from British Gas to the heir to the throne. The letter, which starts off “Your Royal Highness”, said the energy firm had repeatedly contacted the prince over the sum and was referring the matter to debt collectors. But Gaskin, who has run the pub in Essex for three years, is not on main gas. British Gas says it does not know how the letter was sent and has since apologized. Despite a ribbing from regulars, Mr Gaskin sees the funny side. “I am sure it is not him who deals with the household bills - maybe Camilla...” he said. (dailymail.co.uk)
Penny goes for millions
A Beverly Hills rare coin dealer has bought a 1792 American penny for nearly $2.6 million! This is reportedly the most ever paid for a one-cent piece at an auction. Whoever the coin belonged to would never have imagined their modest piece of copper would one day become a million-dollar centrepiece. Maybe it’s time to look at those loose coins in your wallet with new eyes. (reuters.com)

at the Tere Tennis Centre. The team, to be called the KIA SA Fed Cup Team, will be supported by KIA Motors South Africa. Scheepers achieved a career-high singles ranking of 37 in 2011 when she won the WTA title in Guangzhou, China. She is currently ranked 77th in the world, and is back on the SA Fed Cup team for the first time in 10 years. “I’m so happy to be able to join the team again,” said Scheepers. “I love representing South Africa when I play around the world and it’s even more exciting to be able to do that in a team format with great young players coming up”. South African Captain Earl Grainger named Chanel Simmonds, Ilze Hattingh and Michelle Sammons as the other three players to join Scheepers on the team. Last year South Africa failed to gain promotion to Euro/Africa Group 1 during their Fed Cup in Lithuania. With Scheepers in the side, however, Grainger believes that the team has a good chance of gaining promotion this year. Tennis South Africa confirmed that the team would be having a pre-departure camp from 28 January at the Bedfordview Country Club before heading to Estonia on 31 January.

BENONI: New coaches for Spar Protea Netball team 43 HOWARD AVE TEL: 011 422 2995
Netball South Africa (NSA) announced on 13 January the appointment of Benny Saayman as Head Coach of the SPAR Protea team. She will be assisted by Dr Elsje Jordaan and Ms Martha Mosoahle. Their appointment is with effect from 1 February 2015 until 31 August 2015. They replace Elize Kotze, who resigned as head coach last week for personal reasons. “We are confident that Ms Saayman would be able to guide the team to a successful Netball World Championships (WNC),” said NSA President Mimi Mthethwa. “She is a mature coach who has been on the same platform before and during her tenure the team was ranked fifth in the world. Ms Saayman was the coach for the Western Stings, the NPL that won the second division of the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup last year. Her trademark is playing basic netball. It would be important for our team to go back to playing basic netball where all the skills they have acquired in the last three years under the former coach would come in handy to support and strengthen their play. “We had a frank discussion with Ms Saayman to ensure that she and her assistants work as a team. We are happy with how she sees their roles as individual coaches. She was given the opportunity to suggest who she thinks would add value to her game plan; she identified the two assistants.” “I am confident Dr Jordaan would contribute a lot towards the attack aspect of the game while Martha Mosoahle is very good in mid-court and would be instrumental in improving this area of the game,” said Saayman. “I will guide and nurture both the assistant coaches. Elsje (Jordaan) played under me when I was national coach, I know her as a player and I can also say she is currently the best game analyst we have in South Africa. She and Martha both captained the SPAR Proteas during their playing days. I will also work hard to build the team to understand that we are family. I would like our team to play basic, fast netball”. South Africa is drawn along Malawi, Singapore and Sri Lanka in Pool C (INF has indicated that this could change). Although this may look like an easy pool, it would be bad for the team to take these teams lightly. Regardless of where the team ends in the pool, if they are in position one or two they are guaranteed to meet either Australia or New Zealand in the next stage of the competition.
