Laurelle Williams laurelle@tametimes.co.za Benoni based Bethesda House for Abused Women and Children and Mondeor based Joshua House and Epic Foundation were the beneficiaries of three recent fundraising breakfasts held by The Elegant Women’s Club (EWC). The Elegant Women’s Club was established for women from all walks of life who want to be encouraged in the pursuit of learning, sharing and becoming empowered. EWC hosts ladies theme breakfasts in aid of a different charity at every event. At the first breakfast, which was in aid of Bethesda House, renowned designer Gert-Johan Coetzee spoke and well-known songstress Louise Carver sang. The second breakfast was in aid of Joshua House and the most recent was in aid of Epic Foundation, with EWC sponsoring four transformational and business-related courses worth R12 000 from their sister company, Social Edge Biz and Social Edge Modern Day Finishing School to aid men, women and children with basic transformational and educational skills. Bethesda House reaped the fruits of the first breakfast on 15 November when an early Christmas brunch was held for the home at Silver Saddle Estate. Each woman received a goodie bag filled with luxuries and treats. The platters were sponsored by Pick ‘n Pay Panorama, which is owned by Bruno Barradaf. A cleaning hamper consisting of brooms, mops and toilet paper was given to the home. The ten children were spoilt with party packs donated by Rosita, the owner of David Shannon Hairdressing. Presents for the children were sponsored by Wim Theron and Neal Quirk and the children’s entertainment and jumping castle were sponsored by the Elegant Women’s Club. Joshua House also had their vehicles jampacked with generous donations: bedding from Natasha Piper and Nicole Sutherland, a computer and printer from Ina Hannan and cleaning materials, brooms, mops, and toilet paper; as well as two baby hampers filled with nappies, wet wipes, packs of Purity, baby creams, powder, baby oil, baby teas, porridge and Nan formula - all sponsored by EWC. Lorraine Sutherland, founder of EWC, calls on all women to become part of the Elegant Women’s Club and transformational academy. “We need all the support we can get as sisters in our hood. Membership is free - it’s inspiring and empowering.” Sutherland is supported by her team members Jodi Pretorius, Melanie Olhaus, Tiffiny Sutherland and Zamma Makhathini. How angry do you have to be to shoot someone? I have been plagued by this question recently with the news of the shooting of the 19-year-old girl, Mikaela Bagley, allegedly by her mother’s boyfriend (pg 1) and the arrest of the driver of a vehicle that was alleged to be in a botched hijacking, who now is the suspect for the murder of his business partner and friend, Pedro Fransisco (pg 5). Shooting a person with a gun is so final. In that minute of rage, anger, hurt or whatever emotion pushes you to that , it might make sense. However, two seconds after when you see the person lying there and the realisation sets in of what you done, do you regret it? I suppose I will never know the answer to this question as all people are different and I would have to interview a murderer to find out what was going through their head. I send my deepest condolences to the Bagley family. I can only imagine what Mikaela’s mother is going through and I pray God can heal her and guide her through this life-changing ordeal. I also pray for the wife and the family of the arrested suspect in the Fransisco shooting. We always focus on the person in the spotlight but never take a step back and think about the family. People say South Africa has a poor justice system; however, I know on judgement day when we all have to face God, this is definitely not a system that will fail. We won’t be able to lie, bribe or flee - we will have to face the consequences of every single action.

11.1 sound system. Apart from the superb next generation audio-visual technology installed to create a fully immersive cinema-going experience, the cinemas also boast the ultimate in luxury seats – designed to recline for first-class comfort. The revolutionary screen technology stretches from floor to ceiling and is about three storeys high. The world’s most widely used digital 3D cinema technology - with approximately 22 200 screens equipped with RealD 3D by approximately 1000 exhibitors in 68 countries around the world - is behind the new Precision White Screen (PWS) being installed exclusively at selected Nu Metro Cinemas. PWS is designed to deliver enhanced 2D and 3D presentations with wide viewing angles similar to white screens of equivalent gain; making the debate of silver versus white screens a thing of the past. PWS technology features edges four to five times brighter than those of a standard silver screen. The new screens also feature a smooth, white surface which generates better image contrast for improved image quality in 2D and 3D. Developed by Auro Technologies and powered by Barco, the Auro 11.1 sound format is designed along three layers of

sound (Surround, Height, and Overhead), rather than the single layer used in the conventional 5.1 sound format or two layers in other “object-based” formats. Thanks to its 11.1 configuration, the technology not only enables sound mixers to move objects around in space but it also allows them to reproduce the immersive aspects of a film soundtrack in a way that is more compatible with their current workflow. In other – less technical - words, the experience was unreal and out-of-thisworld, making you feel like you are in the world of the latest movie. The Glen Cinema Complex also includes SceneVIP, where cinema-goers can relax in an upmarket lounge before enjoying their favourite movie. This premium option includes the best in designer seats with foot-rests, plush leather cushioning and recliner-seating to stretch out and relax while enjoying the onscreen entertainment. SceneVIP also gives discerning movie fans a quality dining menu to indulge in, upgrading the Nu Metro experience in truly superior style. Go to numetro.co.za for information and bookings.

Letters Open letter to Clr Greeff Clr Paul Smit, Ward 23 City of Johannesburg, writes:

‘n Afrikaanse kind wat die Onse Vader in Engels moes opsê: “Our Father who shouts from heaven, Hallo what’s your name.” En toe hy kom by “give us this day our daily bread,” was sy weergawe: “Give us this day our day in bed.”

Dear Clr Greeff You have done three site visits in my ward since early last year as Political Head of Region F and to date not a single issue you visited has been resolved. Skukuza Road servitude is still being utilised by a contractor who has created such a dust problem in the area. As a result, residents cannot sit outside or open their windows. Health issues in relation to this dust problem are increasing. Troupant residents in Liefde and Vrede have had major crime issues and you were asked

to help close off access points from the servitude to assist in reducing the crime, but eventually residents paid for this closure out of their pockets as they could not live with the crime anymore. Servitudes on Klipriver Road have not been maintained for years and have become drugand crime-infested. I can carry on forever with queries that have been diverted to you over the years and to date you have not resolved a single issue. “A good story to tell” was one of the ANC’s slogans in the May election.

Clean up the old South before building more houses Concerned resident of the South writes: There are so many dilapidated and rundown flats and houses in the South. The new Rosettenville is absolutely disgusting. Under the previous government this was a safe area that you were proud to live in; the houses, gardens and the pavements were kept neat and tidy. As for the council flats in Steeldale and Southdale, need I say more? Has our proud Executive Mayor of Johannesburg ever taken a drive through these areas? If he has, I would not be too proud. The residents of the South were told, before we start building new flats in the South, Rosettenville would be cleaned up at half the cost of new buildings, as there is already water, electricity and sewerage in the area, and this will help with the shortage of

accommodation in Gauteng. Clean up the mess first before bringing more people to the South. With respect to South Rand Hospital: would our Mayor send his wife and children there if they got sick? Would he take his family for a picnic to the Wemmer Pan dam? It was mentioned that this new project will create a safe home for their families. Thank you, Mr Mayor, since you have allowed Rosettenville to deteriorate, as it has, I have had attempted break-ins, damaging my property, costing me dearly in repairs and more security to protect my family. Re-stitch the city, but keep control of it, keep it neat and tidy and safe for everyone - black and white - as we will all be affected by the crime.

Second place in x30 Shifter Kart Championship Round 8 of the x30 Shifter Kart Championship, the final round of the season, took place at Vereeniging Kart Circuit on 8 November. Sebastian Lanzetti came second overall for the day and second in the 2014 x30 Shifter Kart Championships. With the Glenvista resident sitting third overall in the championship, it was vital for him to achieve a strong finish. The gap to 2nd place was 6 points, but in order for him to finish first in the championship and retain his title (2013 x30 Shifter Kart Champion), Lanzetti would have had to outscore the current 1st place driver by over 50 points; a steep challenge indeed, but with double points on offer, not an insurmountable one. The event started well for Lanzetti, as he qualified 3rd for Heat 1 despite not getting a perfect start off the line and managed to retain 3rd position into turn 1. It turned into an action-packed heat from there, with a non-stop battle for 2nd place; he managed to make the pass eventually, but his efforts were undone by the quick-thinking 4th place driver, who managed to take advantage of the battle ahead for a cheeky overtake, stealing 3rd and 2nd positions in one move. Heat 1 ended with Lanzetti in 3rd. Heat 2 saw changing conditions on the track - rain meant wet-weather tyres were fitted to the karts and Lanzetti made the most of his good feel in the wet for a brilliant launch, taking 2nd into turn 1. It was to be a race of sustained attack, and although the gap starting closing rapidly in the final few laps, in the end he had to settle for 2nd place - and the fastest lap. Heat 3 was to be the least promising of the day; bogging down on the start meant he lost 2nd place, but he was able to regain the position

fairly quickly. By then, though, P1 was in a commanding position, which he held; Lanzetti had to settle for another 2nd place finish. The young racing driver said, “It hasn’t been the perfect season for us; all in all, 2nd is about as good as we could have expected, even though our aim is always the top step. Congratulations to Nathan Parkins for his championship win - we’ll be back and fighting next season! A big thank to Jimmy Auby for lending me his Birel kart for this race.” Lanzetti will be back in action on 22 November for the final round of the SSS Prokart Endurance Karting Challenge, to be held at Vereeniging Kart Circuit. SEBASTIAN LANZETTI: came second in x30 Shifter Kart Championships.

This is a day for remembering and honouring the fallen speedway stars who helped build the sport to where it is today - people like Buddy Fuller, Arthur “Archie” Bruins, Deon Prinsloo, Terrance De Capatoa, Mike Carlson and Des Bekker to name a few. The Henry Long 1-lap Timed trophy will be up for grabs again, with Byron Bekker

leading the charge, with a determined Neil Petit, Gio Nunes or Dj Devine out to take the title from Bekker. A full program of speedway, sidecars, flat track, pee wees and quads will be set for the day. Racing starts at 12:00 and full bar facilities, food stalls and braai areas are available. IT’S FISHING TIME! WITH A WIDE RANGE OF FISHING TACKLE

SET FOR SANSUI: Simon Franklin, Kojo Baffoe, Michael Varney, Dineo Moeketsi (Face of SANSUI Summer Cup), Clyde Basel, Barba Gaoganediwe, Chris Dirk, Marc Joubert and Maps Maponyane The Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup final field and draw announcement was held amid unprecedented tension at Turffontein’s stables as the panellists appeared to have faced some tough decisions in choosing the 20 most worthy horses for the R2 million race which will be run over 2000m at Turffontein on 29 November. The Tyrone Zackey-trained Judicial had thrown a spanner in the works by winning the Gr 2 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m last weekend as he had not been in the top 20 of the final Summer Cup log. Neither had the Alec Laird-trained Earl Of Derby or the St John Gray-trained Everest who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Victory Moon, well ahead of a couple of top 20 incumbents. The big question was which horses, if any, would be sacrificed to make space for these front-runners? However, in the end the panellists only had to make two eliminations as they cut the entry list down to 22. Five-times champion trainer Geoff Woodruff has five horses in the final field, Alec Laird has four and both Robbie Sage and St John Gray have two apiece. Four of the province trainers have one runner apiece, KZN’s Gavin van Zyl and Charles Laird, and the Western Cape’s Brett Crawford and Joey Ramsden. Van Zyl has the top weight, No Worries, which ran a cracking second in the Peermont Emperor’s Palace Charity Mile. Charles Laird runs the exciting prospect Bold Inspiration. He is untested at this level, but is a big, long striding sort who should love the Turffontein Standside track. Crawford will try to make history by claiming a rare Gold Cup and Summer Cup double with Wavin’ Flag. Ramsden runs the recent Algoa Cup winner Disco Al, an improving sort who will also love the galloping nature of the track. There are three fillies in the race, the Sage-trained Jet Belle, the Joey Soma-trained Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic winner Athina and the Sean Tarry-trained Enchanted Silk. Athina has already proved she loves this course, although the 2000m will be at the upper limit of her stamina range. The versatile Jet Belle was impressive when winning the Gr 2 Gold Bracelet over this distance at the end of last season at Greyville and will be fancied by many as she is full of class. Tarry would have been relieved to see Enchanted Silk scraping into the field as he rated her his best entrant, although she will be under sufferance at the weights on official merit ratings. The draw is also of importance, despite the fairness of

Turffontein as a racetrack. The most eagerly awaited draw was that of the ruling favourite, Woodruff’s triple crown hero Louis The King. He drew perfectly in seven and Pierre Strydom retains the ride. Woodruff’s other three fancied runners Master Sabina, Lockheed Jetstar and Rake’s Chestnut drew, 2, 11 and 6 respectively, while his outsider Killua Castle drew 18. Pole position was drawn by Disco Al and the widest draw of 20 went to Earl Of Derby. The latter will be hoping for soft ground, which he appears to thrive on. Alec Laird’s three most fancied runners, the hard-knocking Gr 1 performer As You Like, the Charity Mile winner Bezanova and the classy Bouclette Top, drew superbly in barriers, 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Alec’s cousin Charles’s charge Bold Inspiration landed a tricky draw of 12. Judicial landed a draw of 14 and trainer Tyrone Zackey has retained faith in jockey Karl Zechner. Topweight No Worries drew well in 8, a much better draw than he had in the Charity Mile. Sage’s pair Jet Belle and Sovereign Mint had rotten luck with the draw, landing barrier positions 15 and 19 respectively. Gray’s pair Everest and Glorious Jet did not fare much better, drawing 13 and 17 respectively. Wavin’ Flag drew nicely in 9 and will likely be dropped out, as he is capable of producing a sustained run from well off the pace.

The Tin Cup Driving Range at Rietvlei Zoo Farm was officially opened on Saturday 15 November. The range will be open to those who want to become members as well as players who just want to drop by every now and then. The driving range is the brainchild of four partners, namely Grant Muller, Hugo Botha, Vaughn McMullen and Andre Mostert. Grant Muller, a pro golfer with 23 years of experience, said that it has always been a goal of his to open a driving range close to Alberton. He is very excited about the prospects for the driving range in the future. In the next few months the driving range will expand, adding both a putting green as well as a putt putt course. There is also the possibility that a chipping green will be added. The driving range’s clubhouse can be booked for functions. The Tin Cup Driving Range will hold their official launch event in March 2015, when the other additions to the range have been completed.
