The walls of Rosettenville Primary School, Main and De Villiers Streets have taken on a new look in the past few weeks as a hundred 1m x 500m portraits of Rosettenville residents have been pasted on them. This project forms part of the Rosettenville Studio, which is a two-year engagement programme of the School of Architecture and Planning, under the auspices of the Centre for Urbanism and Built Environment Studies (CUBES), University of the Witwatersrand. The students went out into the streets and scouted for residents who would agree to be photographed and to OUTDOOR GALLERY: These walls in Rosettenville recently had a face-lift. *Photo by share their dreams with them. Pink walkers crusade against breast cancer
PINK POWER: the crowd jives to a new Paula Abdul song. Over 21 500 walkers participated in the ninth annual Avon Justine iThemba Walkathon breast cancer awareness event at Marks Park in Johannesburg on 26 October. iThemba Ambassador, Pabi Moloi shared a new #CheckYourself song and dance with the participants. Participants ranging from celebrities to young children joined in the fun as they danced to the song by Paula Abdul. #CheckYourself is a new campaign launched by Avon globally in October to educate women on breast health. For most participants the walk was emotional, with many visibly happy about being able to contribute towards breast cancer awareness in South Africa. Many of them also purchased pink ribbons from Woman & Home on which they wrote messages of hope to hang up on the
Trees of Courage for all breast cancer patients and survivors to see and read. “We’re especially delighted to be a part of this year’s walk, as the money raised will go to supporting the heroic victims battling the disease at the moment. There are so many women here today with moving stories, either their own, or carrying in the hearts the plight of a friend or family member. We celebrate the fact that it’s a day of fun, laughter and saluting the courage of every breast cancer victim and survivor, and we wish everyone strength, happiness and the blessing of being part of a bigger family marching in this crusade of hope,” said Woman & Home Editorial Director, Frith Thomas At the finish line, the participants were greeted with an array of food and other stalls as well as live entertainment from Kaya FM entertainers, Maleh and DJ Amu as well as Tokyo Grove among others. For the children, a kiddie’s play area was available to keep them busy and have fun. Throughout the day, Avon Justine spot prizes were given to participants wearing the best pink outfits. The Avon Justine iThemba Crusade of Hope’s NGO Partners, Bosom Buddies/Breast Health Foundation (BHF) (www.mybreast.org.za) and Look Good... Feel Better (www.lgfb.co.za) also had stalls were participants could find out more about breast cancer and the great work that these NGOs do in our communities. Avon Justine works with BHF to ensure breast cancer education and awareness in communities, particularly in rural areas such as the vast Sedibeng region in the Vaal. Since 2010, the BHF AND CANSA units have educated over 730 000 women. In addition, Avon Justine donates R180 000 worth of products annually to Look Good...Feel Better for their workshops with women cancer patients across the country. This programme has helped over 26 000 women.
Thank you Journey to 30 Something readers
I would like to take this time to thank all the readers of this column. Of late I have been receiving a great deal of responses, feedback and interaction. With every letter I receive, my heart and soul smiles. Each response I get, I see as a word of encouragement and a sign from Our Heavenly Father that I am on the right path. Please know that your kind words, advice and sharing of great books, is the watering of the seed that was planted in me before I was born, and as this watering takes place you are building me up, encouraging me, instilling belief in myself and ultimately playing a part in my future. For this, I must thank you sincerely. Thank you for taking the time out to read the column and for taking time out of your busy schedules to pop me an email and share with me as I have been sharing with you. Sadly, this is a bitter-sweet week as I had to say farewell to two of my colleagues, Stephanie Conradie (Alberton editor) and Amy-Mae Campbell (Boksburg editor) as they are nurturing their own seeds that are planted in them and taking a new opportunity God has blessed them with. I wish them the best of luck and know that God has gone before them. You see, in the tame TIMES production office we are more than just colleagues we are friends and we are a team. I will sincerely miss Stephanie, who is a strong sister in Christ, and I thank her for being instrumental in keeping me positive and strengthening my relationship with God. As they leave, we welcome new people. Monica Supra will be joining us again as Alberton editor; Heather Djunga is the new Bedfordview editor, Natasha Kotze is the new Boksburg editor and Lizeth Kotze is a writer. May they have a positive impact in these communities. Have a blessed week and remember the words of Joyce Meyer: “God doesn’t stop being good because the world is full of evil.”

Early morning horsing around
SAFE: The horse secured in a property in Uys Road
OUT OF THE TRAFFIC: Sector 2 patrollers took care of the horse until the SPCA arrived.
As residents left home for work last Wednesday, they noticed a horse grazing along Potgieter Street, Suideroord. According to Bernice Abrahams, whose property the horse was kept in until the JSPCA could come and collect him, it was resident Paula Schultz who alerted Sector 2 CPF and the JSPCA. Sector 2 patrollers managed to lead the horse to safety at Abraham’s residence in Uys Road while Werna Henning, an animal activist and patroller, waited for the JSPCA to arrive with a horse-box. The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve was contacted,
messages were sent out and Facebook posts were made to try to discover the owner of the horse. The JSPCA arrived and took the horse safely away in a horse-box. Abrahams said, “He was so tame and went into the horse box with no problems. He was taken to JSPCA in Reuven and we hope his owner will come forward.” tame TIMES contacted the JSPCA on 30 October, but at that time no-one had yet come forward to claim the horse. Thanks go to the Sector 2 patrollers and residents for looking after the horse.

Are school fraudsters being protected? The DA in Gauteng believes that Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi is protecting fraudsters and corrupt officials. The DA has stated that they are in possession of damning forensic reports implicating principals for financial irregularities. These include, among others, fraud, corruption and maladministration. According to the DA, a total of 159 forensic audits have been conducted in the province over the past five years into irregularities amounting to R34 million, none of which have been made public and School Governing Bodies (SGBs) which exposed these financial irregularities are being dissolved and are denied access to these reports. “Schools which have asked for access to these forensic audit reports recently are, amongst others, Glenvista High School, Brakpan High School, Senaoane Secondary and Parkdale Primary School,” said Khume Ramulifho MPL and the DA’s current shadow MEC for Gauteng Education. Ramulifho said that the MEC is quick to dissolve the SGBs but takes no action against the real offenders. “The Department is failing to protect whistle-blowers or to take a firm stand against corrupt officials.” Ramulifho has requested the MEC to conduct a closed Education Committee meeting so that he can share his plans for taking action against corrupt officials. tame TIMES has requested comment from the Gauteng Department of Education. Last Friday they acknowledged the request and said it will be sent. Share your thoughts with us on this article by posting your comment on www.tametimes.co.za

Dog injured in razor wire Colony of dassies poisoned outside Klipriviersberg
A resident's dog became entrapped in a coil of razor wire attached to the fence of Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve last Wednesday at around 17:00. Srit Glaner’s dog was playing outside with two other dogs when he ran into the razor wire on the border of the Nature Reserve. It struggled, entangling itself in the wire becoming severely injured by the time it could be freed. Luckily, however, the injuries did not prove fatal, as the vet the dog was taken to expects the animal to make a full recovery. The fence of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is covered with razor wire for a stretch of nearly 100m, apparently to discourage entry to the reserve. It seems to have been added recently - according to Glaner, only in the last week or two. There is a sign outside the gate of the Nature Reserve prohibiting dogs from being brought into the area. It is a well-known fact that maintaining secure fencing in the nature reserve area has been a challenge in the
past. Morné Brits, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association’s chairman, said, "Firstly, let me express my dismay and regret that Mr Glaner’s dog was injured in this way. The razor wire at the Silent Pool Entrance to the Nature Reserve was erected by Joburg City Parks Zoo(JCPZ) without notifying or consulting the KNRA. I’ve had my misgivings about this ‘security barrier’ from the outset, as it is unlikely to keep vagrants out, which I’m assuming is the intended purpose. My immediate reaction on seeing the razor wire was that it will interfere with, and possibly injure, wildlife migrating along the stream in and out of the Reserve. A good example of this is the water mongoose, the spoor of which is often seen in the stream bed leading to and from the streams in Mondeor. The first heavy rains and flood water will likely wash the wire downstream causing further problems. I’m sure there must be a more environmentally sensitive way of securing this area." JCPZ have been contacted for commment.
A Linmeyer resident who was walking his dogs in Peter Avenue on 22 October was shocked to find an entire colony of dead dassies which he believes had been poisoned to death. According to residents of this beautiful, unspoilt area, 30 or more dassies fell victim to the poison. Johann and Nellica van der Merwe told tame TIMES, “We as residents are concerned about the ecological impact this has on the breeding black eagles and owls in the area. We don’t even want to think of the cats and dogs walking in the koppies. The area where this happened has a terrible smell and lots of flies.” Morné Brits, Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association’s chairman, went to the site where the dassie carcasses lay and commented, “The carcasses are decomposed and I could find only skin and bone, although it was still smelling and covered in flies. These animals have been dead for a few weeks. The immediate crisis is over in that secondary poisonings are unlikely at this stage. What damage has been done has been done,” he said, adding, however, “It is possible that secondary poisonings could have occurred of predators and scavengers in the area. Bo van Der Lecq, an authority on these raptors and instrumental in getting the nesting platform up, does however assure me that the Verreaux eagles are unlikely to take half-dead prey and were therefore probably not affected.“ Brits said it seems the dassies, which residents describe as a formerly thriving
DELIBERATE: One of many dassies killed by poison colony, seems to have been wiped out. tame TIMES would like to inform readers that poisoning wildlife is illegal. The Endangerd Wildlife Trust (EWT) has advised that it be reported to the local SAPS (using the specific reference nr 570265) which will ensure it is manged by the correct Unit, adding that evidence should be collected. "Take photos and supply any information that may be of use in the case. Safety is foremost so please always use gloves and wash your hands thoroughly," Rynette Coetzee of EWT said. She advised it should also be reported to Eric Mbhele of GDARD Green Scorpions. She wanted the carcasses to be tested to see if they were really poisoned but this could not happen as they had decomposed.

OK Value: birthday bargains OK Value, situated at 133 Main Street, Kenilworth celebrated their first anniversary and with this came birthday bargains that their loyal customers benefitted from. Happy Ncube and Portia Mabusa told tame TIMES that they choose OK Value opposed to other stores in the area as their food items are always fresh and the prices for the fresh fruit is always lower than other stores. “The cashiers work fast so there are no queues and you are in the shop for less than 10 minutes, which makes it pleasant,” Ncube said. Super bargains were not the only order of the day but various promotions were on the go where customers could taste mushrooms, boerewors or noodles, which customers nibbled on while doing their grocery shopping. The constant line of customers proved that these specials were definitely a bargain and
gave the customers good value. The specials included hampers, giveaways and excellent specials. Sandro Silvo, OK Value’s owner explained to tame TIMES that they were previously an independent store for many years and they decided to change over to an OK Value franchise in order to give more value to their customers. He added that since the change over, business has increased with more foot count in his store. Silva’s aim is to grow OK Value Kenilworth to its fullest potential with the great service offered and once again great value for money for the customers. “I would like to thank all my loyal customers for supporting the store,” Silva said. For more information please like OK Value Kenilworth on Facebook and to stand a chance to win a Samsung 32’ TV dial *120*856*01#. Tel no: 011 683 9705.
TASTY MUSHROOMS: tame TIMES employees Emily Khoza and Mangi Xazi enjoyed tasting the Highveld mushrooms that Barbara Thompson offered.
LOYAL CUSTOMERS: Happy Ncube and Portia Mabusa would rather shop at OK Value Kenilworth rather than any other store in the area due to their food items always being fresh, and the low prices.
LDAC transforming community The Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) Booysens Precinct recently held a ladies high tea in aid of cancer awareness. Seventy people attended and no-one went home empty handed, as each guest received a beautiful gift. Delicious cakes and tea were served while the cancer association educated the crowd which included various beauty kings and queens to add some glitz and glamour. The LDAC Booysens Precinct, which opened its doors this year in September, strives for a drug-free, crime-free and self reliant community and wants to provide a safe environment where addicts and vulnerable individuals can be transformed and equipped to contribute positively to the community. The centre is situated at the old tennis courts in Robertsham which had been standing empty for some years. LDAC hopes to start a feeding scheme, get children off the streets where they can play in a safe environment and offer a skills development program to the youth. They also offer counselling to
youth or adults who suffer or are affected by substance abuse. The high tea is the third event they have held. The first event was a stake-holders meeting with the main objective of encouraging those with skills to offer their services and financial assistance to equip the centre. The second event was a cancer awareness shave-a-thon and big walk at which supporters wrote the names of loved ones they had lost to cancer on balloons which were released at the end of the day. For more information please visit www. ldacbooysens.org or contact Sheralee Bosman on 083 266 0937.

Letters The power of media
Turk - only working now
Prof. Shikha Vyas-Doorgapersad writes: Tame TIMES published coverage in previous editions in the JHB South region, regarding the Heal Humanity: A Love, Care and Share (LovCaSh) Initiative. I have received several calls from the community members of that region offering assistance in my charity work. This is the power of media and I am grateful to tame TIMES for the support. Thank you and God bless.
Bad workmanship and breach of contract A Bassonia resident writes:
Tip: Hou gereeld kontak met vriende en familie maak nie saak of hulle naby of ver is nie.
No more fireworks Upset resident in Chelverton Avenue, Mondeor writes: What a nightmare week we have just been through with the fireworks and our animals. I have had enough of fireworks. Fireworks are getting bigger and louder. What also gets me down, is that people do not care at what time they are been fired off. Whether people have to go to work the following day does not even matter to them. Can these celebrations not be celebrated by lighting starlights? And what about the animals in the nature reserve?
I recently moved to a new residence and have been doing renovations. I needed some work done on my pool and looked around for pool renovators. I found a gentleman advertising his pool company. I gave him a call and he agreed to come and have a look at the pool and provide me with a quote. He looked very professional and had a photo album with him showing pictures of work that he had previously done on pools. I explained what I needed done, which included re-Marbeliting the pool and replacing the mosaic. We both signed an agreement on his quoted price, as well as the work to be done on the pool. He started work on the pool on 18 October. He arrived with two assistants but no tools. They replaced the mosaic around the pool and did some chipping inside the pool for the reMarbeliting using my tools. He took the deposit from me and made me pay his two assistants separately and agreed to return two days later, but did not pitch up
as agreed and never took my calls. He sent me an SMS with an excuse saying that he was going to come, then another SMS saying that he wanted more money. This happened after we signed on an agreed price. He refused to take my calls to discuss anything and never came to complete the job. He left the grouting on top of the new mosaic to dry for two days, which makes it difficult to remove, thus damaging the mosaic. The mosaic was put in untidily and very crooked. I had to call in a new contractor to complete the job as well as to replace the entire mosaic that he had damaged. The border around my pool was also damaged. tame TIMES contacted the contractor for his side of the story and he said he stopped the job as I refused to him more money. tame TIMES suggested we try to sort out the matter between ourselves, but if we can’t that the upset resident should contact the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud on 0860 000 272.
Regents Park resident Ayanda Ndlovu writes: I am surprised that Bev Turk calls the ANC her heroes. After all the years that she was a councillor for Ward 57 everybody was aware that she called us the K-word. After the DA got rid of her, she is now only doing work that she omitted to do whilst she was councillor. I do not belong to any political party but cannot help notice that our new councillor, Faeeza Chame, is working hard to clean up Turk’s mess, such as pot holes, blocked sewage drains, that were neglected by her. Since Councillor Chame is working in our ward, we see many good changes. For example, she is working day and night to get the drains unblocked; she is working hard with the housing corruption issues that Turk left behind. Chame is always available to help, but I cannot say the same about Turk during her reign. Bev Turk, it is time to say good bye to you and your ANC and to say thank you to Faeeza and for you to leave her to do her work. You had your chance and it is time for you to step down and stop trying to do work that you had the opportunity of doing but neglected to do. Viva Councillor Chame! tame TIMES has sent the letter to Turk for comment.

Matric: Holiday or Horror? By Lizeth Kotze Your task of parenting is virtually over. Even though you are concerned about the upcoming holiday, your Matric child cannot wait to celebrate his or her newfound freedom. The potential dangers of post-Matric celebrations leave many parents terrified. Keeping your child safe is the main concern and a serious conversation is vital.

Database of services to One of Senzo’s killers caught help rape victims Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za
The Tears Foundation (Transform Education about Rape and Sexual Abuse), founded by Mara Glennie, aims to be a one-stop port of call for information about all aspects of rape and sexual abuse. Its aim is to facilitate better care, proper support and positive outcomes for victims nationwide. Tears is responsible for the sourcing and collating of a database comprised of a fully comprehensive network of medical, medicolegal, legal and psychological services currently available throughout South Africa, for the assistance and support of survivors of rape and sexual abuse. Wireless application service provider, Cellfind, was chosen as Tears’ technology partner because of its location-based service (LBS)
capabilities. LBS technology will dramatically enhance the current system which will help to connect South African rape and sexual abuse victims with emergency support faster when they contact the organization for help. Glennie said, “When rape victims contact us for help, they are usually in a state of shock and want to find support as soon as possible. Cellfind’s technology will play a valuable role by helping us to provide faster assistance to rape victims when they need it. Since its inception 1 year ago, Tears has had 7 878 distressed callers.” Jacques Swanepoel, CEO of Cellfind said, “We support the work that Mara and her team are doing and are glad that we are able to assist their organization with our technology.” TEARS HELP LINE NUMBER *120*7355#
N12 crash: Driver granted bail
Roedolf Walker
Roedolf.Walker@tametimes.co.za
INSET: HIDING: The accused in court Isaac Maruding, aged 44, who is on trial for three counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving was granted bail of R7000 on 27 October. The bail was granted on the grounds that the accused was not a flight risk and that he would
not be a risk to the general public should he be released. Magistrate Samuel Hlubi drew special attention to the fact that Maruding was present for his previous sentencing and questioned why this time would be different. “Detaining an accused is only to be done when there is a genuine risk of either the accused not attending his trial or when the release will be undermining the purpose of justice,” said Magistrate Hlubi. “The state has failed to convince the court that this is the case.” The bail had several conditions attached to his release. The accused is to stay in his verified home address in Viljoenskroon. He is also not allowed to leave the Viljoenskroon area without permission from the investigating officer. Maruding had to hand over his licence to the investigating officer. He has to report to the local police station every Monday between 7:00 and 16:00 until the time of the trial, which has been postponed until 12 November to allow further investigation by the state.

The police’s team of forensic experts has revealed the identity kit images of two suspects alleged to be involved in the murder of Bafana Bafana captain and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa. The NPA has confirmed that one suspect, Zanokuhle Mbatha, aged 25, appeared in the Boksburg Magristrate Court on 31 October. He will appear in court again on 11 November. The football star was killed during a house robbery in Mzamo Section 28 in Vosloorus on 26 October. It is alleged that the deceased was visiting his girlfriend, Qinisela hit-maker Kelly Khumalo, when two men entered the house and confronted the seven occupants while the third suspect waited outside. It is alleged that the suspects demanded cellphones and money and took a cellphone which was on a charger. During the incident a shot was fired and the goalkeeper was hit in the upper body. He was taken to Bophelong Clinix hospital in Vosloorus where he was declared dead on arrival. The three suspects fled on foot but police have launched a manhunt for them. General Riah Phiyega, National Commissioner of Police, expressed condolences to the Bafana captain’s family and friends and the soccer fraternity for the sudden and untimely death of Senzo
Meyiwa. “A multi-disciplinary task team has been established to investigate the murder of the 27-year-old Bafana Bafana captain and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa,” she said. “The team will be led by the Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Detective Services, Major General Tebello Mosikili. Investigators that are forming part of this team are a combination of detectives from the National Investigation and Provincial Investigation teams, National and Provincial Crime Intelligence, Visible Policing and the War Room. One cellular phone was taken during the robbery,” said Phiyega. Dr Irvin Khoza, Orlando Pirates Chairman tweeted, “To the media, I encourage you to assist us in finding Senzo’s killers and bringing them to book. Let’s assist the police.” A reward of up to R 250 000 is on offer for information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. Cases of murder and house robbery are under investigation. The funeral of Meyiwa took place this Saturday at the Moses Mabhiea Stadium in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

International Jockey Challenge coming to Turffontein Racing. It’s a Rush, the integrated brand launched in August which now represents South African horseracing, is the new title sponsor of the prestigious International Jockeys Challenge taking place at Turffontein Race Course on 15 November and at Kenilworth, Cape Town on 16 November. The Racing. It’s a Rush International Jockeys Challenge sees a formidable team of international jockeys take on the South African team. Captaining team South Africa this year is S’manga Khumalo, last season’s Champion Jockey of the Year. Known affectionately as “Bling”, S’manga is the first black jockey to win this title. Also included in this talented local team is Pierre Strydom, who is rated as one of South Africa’s all-time top jockeys and is expected to ride his 5000th winner later this year. Strydom describes the annual International Jockeys Challenge as “fantastic” and his favourite local event in which to compete. Making up the remaining members of this talented local team are Richard Fourie, Muzi Yeni and Anthony Delpech. A younger team of riders than in previous years makes up the international team and includes James Doyle, the UK jockey who achieved four major wins this past year riding champion racehorse, Kingman. Kingman is likely to be voted “Cartier Horse-of-the-Year” in December, the highest award for horses in European Horse Racing. Other international team members include Martin Harley (Ireland), Adam Kirby (United Kingdom), Andreas Helfenbein (Germany) and Selim Kaya (Turkey). James Doyle is the captain of the International team. “The International Jockeys Challenge is the perfect sponsorship opportunity for

It’s a Rush said. At both Turffontein and Kenilworth, entrance is free and besides the enthralling international racing, there will also be food stalls, entertainment for the kids and much more. The jockeys will ride in four races at each event. The team that scores the most points wins the Challenge but there are also awards for the top riders in each of the legs and the top rider overall. Summer has arrived and that means glorious warm days, and of course, CRICKET. Those blistering energy-tapping warm days are on us. Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE IT, and have been doing so for 17 years. Anyway, I was very surprised how the couch potatoes and parents comment on the laws of cricket. So let’s start our series on the Laws of Cricket by discussing Law 5 “The Ball.” Allow me a moment to say this: No cricket game can be played without a “Ball.” No runs can be made, no bowling can be done and no batsman can prove his skills without a “Ball.” The law is very clear regarding certain stipulations and regulations of what type and size ball can be used. Ladies/junior cricket regulations regarding the ball are very different to the men’s cricket. The law states as follows: “The weight assize of the ‘Ball’ (red for daytime cricket, white for day/night cricket) when NEW shall weigh no less than 155.9g-156g but not more than 163g and shall measure no less than 22.4cm and not more than 22.9cm in circumference.” In a nutshell that is what is required in the law. This clause deals with the actual size and weight of ball when ‘NEW;’ what it does not take into account is the wear and tear that the ball may suffer during the match. A simple scenario could go like this: heavy rain falls the day and night before the game is to be played. On the Saturday morning the sun is out, lovely sunshine, but the field is damp and pools of visible water are evident
By Eddie Dalziel (“A” Level Umpire GCUA)
on and around the boundary areas. The ball gets struck for some fours and sixes and the balls lands in some wet areas once or twice. After a while it starts affecting the the surface of the ball. Seams get wet; the ball in general becomes soggy and is now heavy and uncontrollable! What now? Diligent umpires will inspect the ball at regular intervals to ensure that the ball does not become unplayable. If so, both umpires can call for a replacement ball. This also goes for when the seam is split and the stitching is coming undone. The replacement ball must be, where possible, of the same overs and usage. You cannot use a new ball as replacement. The ball must be of equivalent usage. The umpires along with the captains make the sole decision on the ball to be used. Once done, the ball is shown to the batsmen and it is indicated to the scorers that a replacement ball is on the park. The scorers must note the following: the time the ball is taken and the number of overs when the ball replaced. The ball is a vital piece of equipment and must be protected against vandalism and illegal tampering by the players. Therefore the ball must be under the control of the umpires at all times when drinking, while wickets are falling, during tea or lunch intervals or any time there is an injury to a player or umpire. Well that is all I have space for. Good cricketing. Your friend in cricket. Eddie Dalziel (“A” Level Umpire GCUA)
