Tony Krugel, Group Customer Care Manager of Mr Price, confirmed that they are ready to compensate Gertrude Nxasana (46), who was injured at a Mr Price store in Hlahatsi Shopping Centre, Katlehong last year in December. Gertrude Nxasana was injured on 6 December 2014 inside a Mr Price store while doing shopping. She was on her way to the fitting room when she tripped over an aluminium stepladder, with the result that the small toe on her right foot was cut off. Tony Krugel said, “We have communicated and consulted with her on several occasions.
We need a letter that states how much she wants to be compensated with and it has to explain how she came up with the figure that she needs. We also need a medical report to back up her claim. We deal with the insurance and we will forward everything to them. We are a listed company and we do things correctly.” Nxasana told tame TIMES that she was disappointed with the response she had received from Mr Price. “I was injured inside their shop and the store manager called the ambulance that took me to Natalspruit Hospital. I was admitted for seven days and
they did not even bother to visit or call me to make some follow-ups,” said Nxasana. She said her brother contacted them after she was discharged and they went to the store. They gave the store manager all the documents that he needed to send to the head office. “We made a follow-up this year; the Area Manager told me that Mr Price cannot assist me with anything,” she said. “I am a street vendor; I can’t walk around anymore to sell my goods due to this injury. I have five dependents and they are now starving. I need R150 000.00 (one hundred and fifty thousand rands) compensation from Mr Price,” concluded Nxasana.
FOR PAIN AND SUFFERING: Gertrude Nxasana wants R150 000.00 compensation from Mr Price.
DISFIGURED: Gertrude Nxasana’s small toe was cut off by a stepladder while she was shopping at the Mr Price store at Hlahatsi Shopping Centre, Katlehong.

Learners debate HIV/Aids matters Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za Ekurhuleni high school learner’s debate finalists are today battling it out in the final stage of the public speaking competition at Alberton Civic Centre. The annual high schools debate marathon competition, which started on 6 February, is tackling the scourges of HIV/Aids, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and Tuberculosis (TB). The preliminary session of the competition was conducted in the customer areas around Ekurhuleni where the finalists were selected. The topic of the debate - which is in line with their objectives - is: “Ekurhuleni has the highest HIV-prevalence rate. How do we step up the pace in the fight against HIV/ Aids, STIs and TB?” Stanley Phatudi Masemolo, HIV/Aids coordinator - HIV/Aids Unit, said they are celebrating February as the month of love and it is also commemorated nationally as Reproductive Health Month. He said the focus is on the treatment and early detection of Sexually Transmitted infections, HIV/Aids and teenage pregnancy. “We have realised that we have a high prevalence of HIV/Aids and that we cannot win the battle alone hence we are engaging other stakeholders in fighting it. The learners who are debating

that you care about and need to express your affection
February is the month of love. As l pass by all the shops, peering through the windows, I see Valentine’s gifts and decorations on display and many people from different age groups holding or buying those gifts. This shows that people still love and care for one another. We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day this Saturday and some people are anxious, as they are not sure whether they will receive presents; while others are excited and optimistic that they will be receive something from their loved one. I believe that Valentine’s Day is not only for couples, but for anyone
to. It could be a friend, family member or relative. People should not just wait to receive presents, but should practise being the first one to hand out gifts. As part of celebrating the love month, the City of Ekurhuleni is hosting the High Schools debate finals at Alberton Civic Centre today. This is quite interesting, as learners are debating on issues that are linked to love and relationships such as HIV/Aids and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Learners, many of whom are considered to be sexually active, will help to provide solutions on how to fight HIV/Aids. Happy Valentine’s Day, enjoy and cheers for now.
will be providing or coming with interventions as an effort to reduce new infections and increase access to treatment, care and support,” said Masemolo. The intervention is part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s efforts to reduce new HIV infections and to increase access to treatment, care and support to eighty percent (80%) of people living with HIV and their families, in order to reduce morbidity and mortality, as well as the other impacts of HIV/Aids.
YOUNG SPEAKERS: Katlehong High School learners listen attentively to their fellow learners during the preliminary session of the competition held at Tsolo Hall.

Katlehong schools urgently need more classrooms The DA in Gauteng calls on Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi to address the desperate need for additional classrooms in Katlehong schools. Lebogang More, DA Gauteng Constituency Head for Katlehong, said in a media statement that during their recent oversight visits to several schools in the area, the DA found most of them overcrowded. “Leratadima Primary School in Thokoza, Katlehong Technical High School in the Goba section and Thutopele High School in the Khumalo Valley section require urgent intervention. Despite Leratadima Primary being a model school in the community, it has no library, with access to the school being on a busy route causing a safety concern to parents and learners,” said More. He said Katlehong Technical High School has suffered from theft and needs security equipment in place. Thutopele High School has a high teacher/ learner ratio, with an average ratio of one teacher to sixty learners, as well as a shortage of maths and science teachers.

“The overcrowded schools across the ever growing province call for more classrooms. In the meantime, the addition of more classrooms to existing schools, coupled with the need for more teachers, will alleviate the strain on overcrowded schools as a shortterm solution,” he said. More said overcrowded classes place an unnecessary strain on both learners and teachers. This is the space where new ideas are taught, explained and debated, he said, and squashing learners into classrooms stifles their chances of a fair education. He said the DA will submit written questions to the MEC asking him what his department’s plans are to address this unacceptable situation, and how soon learners will find relief. The DA says it will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the needs of Katlehong learners remain a top priority.

Zonkizizwe Community Policing Forum (CPF) held its elective conference last month at the police station. Mr Patrick Celigama and Mr Bongani Dlamini were re-elected unopposed to the positions of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson respectively. The former CPF Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Vusi Mkhuma, was also elected unopposed as Secretary. Ms Sarah Moloi was re-elected to the position of Treasurer, while Ms Delisile Mhlanga and Ms Ntombi Mathunzi were elected as Deputy Secretary and PRO respectively. As mandated by the SAPS Act and CPF Constitution, the elections were facilitated by the Department of Community Safety and the Cluster CPF represented by Mr Sipho Ledwaba and Mr Les Alfreds respectively. Zonkizizwe SAPS was represented by Warrant Officer Shabalala (Sector Manager) and Sergeant Rufus Tema (Communications Officer) as observers. All the three Sector Crime Fora were represented, as the committee was elected into the CPF office for the next three years. Sergeant Rufus Tema, Communications Officer of Zonkizizwe said, “The re-election of the four members from the previous office clearly indicates the confidence sectors have showed in them. It also helps with continuity of the crime prevention projects already put into place. Both genders are equally represented to observe the principle of gender balance. It is important that the entire community knows their representatives and, most importantly, can help them and the police with information to prevent crime.”

Athletic Stream E finally formed Lebo Mosolodi
lebo@tametimes.co.za Seven primary schools converged on Katlehong’s Huntersfield Stadium in a bid to form a Stream E team which will this Friday battle it out against a Stream F team. Seven of the primary schools which formed the Stream E team are: Lungisani, Sonqoba, Vumbeni, Kwanele, Abram Hlophe, Katlehong Primary and Chivirikani Primary School.
Speaking to tame TIMES, Stream E Chairperson Rose Nkosi said about 630 athletes participated in the event. “In the track events we got sprinters, hurdlers and middle distance athletes. In the field event we got Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put athletes. There were only 120 spots which were up for grabs and only 120 top performing athletes secured their spots. They now form the Stream E team,” she said. Nkosi said this Friday the best performing athletes from Streams E and F would form the Katlehong Three team which will compete in Greater Germiston.
