TRAGIC STORY: White Ngwenya with his niece Zanele blames the hospital for her child’s death. Zanele Lukhele (31) from Tshongweni section, Katlehong claims that Natalspruit Hospital lost her file, which caused her to have to pay for the burial of her stillborn baby. She also blames the hospital for the stillbirth. Lukhele, the mother of six children, said, “I was seven months pregnant when l visited Goba Clinic for a check-up on 19 February. I was told that my blood pressure was high
birth to a stillborn baby and I blame the hospital in that they did nothing to help me seeing that my blood pressure was not dropping. They should have conducted a Caesar (operation) and my baby should have been alive by today,” said Lukhele. She said she requested her file and was told it was missing. Lukhele said her funeral insurance was unable to bury her child because she could not produce the hospital file. “I paid for the funeral from my own pocket and l request the file so that l can claim my refund from the insurance. The other disturbing issue is that they took my fingerprints for the death certificate of my baby instead of those of the baby. I wish the hospital management can change their attitudes towards the patients because l am not the only one complaining about missing files,” said Lukhele. White Ngwenya, the uncle to Lukhele, said, “We are concerned as a family that the hospital did nothing to help my niece to save her baby when they saw that her blood pressure is not dropping. The hospital did not consider the life of the baby. We are shocked that the file is missing and we want to know the cause of the child’s death. We demand the missing file with immediate effect.” Prince Hamnca, Head of Communications Gauteng Department of Health, said “Zanele Lukhele was attended to by the doctor and the necessary medication was prescribed to assist with the maturity of the baby’s lungs prior to delivery as the baby was pre-term. On the issue of the missing file, the file was taken from ward 18 to the labour ward so that the midwife could fill in the death report (BI1663). Thereafter it was taken to the mortuary as per routine with all deaths. The mother is advised to come to the hospital with the claim forms to the doctor who will assist with completing it, so she can claim from her insurance company. Mortuary staff never took the mother’s fingerprints at any point during their interaction with the patient, so the allegations over wrong Lukhele whose file is missing at Natalspruit Hospital. She fingerprints are untrue.” He added that the Department requests patients who experience difficulties in any health institution to report their and was transferred to Natalspruit Hospital. I arrived at the concerns to Quality Assurance Officers based at all health hospital at around 15:00 pm and I was checked by the doctor institutions. If they are not satisfied they should report to at around 21:30 pm. I was admitted at the hospital, the doctor Facility Managers (CEOs of the respective hospitals or the keep on saying my blood pressure is not dropping but they Clinic Managers as applicable) and their concerns will be gave me tablets and injections.” taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. I have had enough of people talking about their rights. Some say it’s their right to know how the government is spending their tax money, while others say it is their right to know the whereabouts of their partner and to browse through their cellphone because they are in a relationship. The question is: do people know their actual fundamental human rights, as declared by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the constitution of the Republic of South Africa - as listed in our bill of rights? On 21 March it is Human Rights Day, and we will be celebrating our rights. People will be educated and made aware of their basic rights. This is because there are some people who don’t know their rights and there are some who are abusing them intentionally and others who are doing so without being aware of what they are doing. It is especially important for children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities to know their rights, as they are the most vulnerable people in society. In short, however, everyone has the right to life and access to health facilities, and all children have a right to education. This fortnight we have an article from a local DJ who is educating people about their right to life. The community of Ekurhuleni is also encouraged to write in with their views regarding the State of the City address to be held on 25 March at Germiston Civic Centre. For more information on how to do this, please read this copy of the tame TIMES newspaper. The Kathorus’s Got Talent Show has been launched for the first time in Kathorus, with the mission of unearthing local talent and there is an article in the paper informing people how to enter the competition and stand a chance to win R10 000 in cash. Don’t miss this lifetime opportunity to make your dream a reality - as for me, I can’t wait to see you shine. Cheers for now, from Charity Moyo, Editor for tame TIMES Kathorus.

Let your voice be heard “Have your say, let your city know what its people really want,” is the message during the month ahead of the State of the City Address (SOCA) scheduled for Wednesday 25 March at Germiston Civic Centre. The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mondli Gungubele, calls upon residents to contribute to the address by sharing their SOCA tips to help
influence how the city plans for their future. “It is extremely important to hear the views of the people as we move towards delivering the most important report about the performance of the City so far. The people of Ekurhuleni have never let us down in terms of letting us into their thoughts and we are confident that they will once again come to the party and tell us their expectations.” “As a government of the people, we view public participation in our work as a key component of taking Ekurhuleni forward. I therefore appeal to our residents and opinion-makers to participate in this process because we desperately seek their views,” explains Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele. Residents can give their SOCA tips through suggestion boxes at Customer Care Centres, the city of Ekurhuleni’s Facebook page, the municipal official website, www.ekurhuleni.gov.za, and by emailing their tips to SOCA.tips@ekurhuleni.gov.za. The closing date for SOCA tips to be entered is Friday 20 March. Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni CIIr Mondli Gungubele is to address Ekurhuleni residents at the State of the City address.

Waste hits classrooms Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za For more than ten years the pupils of Lungisani Primary School and nearby residents have been walking through sewage waste, and have received no assistance from the municipality in cleaning up the mess. School principal Duduzile Tsuari said the pupils have to walk through sewage at the school entrance. “The sewage flows to the school premises at the main entrance and when the wind blows the entire odour comes directly to the school. This is a health hazard and affects our learners in that they inhale dirty air from the sewage. It can lead to many diseases and also our pupils are unable to utilise the playground and eat outside the classrooms.” She added that they have tried to contact the relevant department but were told that only the owner of the house where the sewage originates has the right to lodge complaints. Tsuari said the granny residing in the house with the sewage blockages, Duduzile Mazibuko, has tried several times to access assistance from the municipality, but has
never received any. Mazibuko said, “This sewage blockage started in 1992 and the sewer comes from the tap drainage. We have been reporting and they come to unblock and after a few weeks it starts again. We suspect that they are failing to find the root of the problem. It is difficult to live with waste and we are unable either to sit outside or to open windows. We are requesting help in unblocking the drainage sewer. We have been reporting to the ward councillor but there is no assistance. The current councillor is the fourth one since the sewage trouble began.” Another neighbour, Busi Twala said, “Our children don’t play outside as it is a health hazard. Some pupils are failing while trying to jump the sewage. We need assistance because we will be infected with diseases through this overflowing sewage.” Ward 59 councillor Tebogo Maama said, “I am aware of the complaint. I will send technical support to investigate the matter. We request the community to immediately report such matters to the councillor so that they will receive a quick response and solution to the problem.”

Manzini Primary School pupils in Zonkizizwe will never experience reading challenges due to eyesight problems, as Ster-Kinekor has sponsored spectacles for the pupils who need them. Spec Savers was recently commissioned by Ster-Kinekor to conduct eye tests on pupils at the school and to provide the necessary spectacles. Spec Savers optometrist Jerry Chweneyagane said they were testing the

pupil’s eyesight and taking measurements for their spectacles. He said the spectacles will be delivered to the school in a few weeks’ time and, on the day the learners receive their new spectacles, they will also be taken to a movie house by Ster-Kinekor. Mantwa Khohlooa, a Grade 3 learner and one of the beneficiaries, told tame TIMES, “I could not see or read properly, but now with the new spectacles I will be able to read my books.” School principal Kenneth Sibisi said, “I am impressed that Ster-Kinekor has come on board to assist our pupils. 200 pupils with eyesight challenges were identified by the educators and all had their eyes tested and will be given new pairs of spectacles.” “Early detection of loss of sight can be reversed.” “This can help in improving the academic performance of the pupils as they will be able to read.”

CELEBRATING 21 MARCH: Jabulani ‘Dj X’ Xhasa, managing director of Excellence Unlimited and the host of The Kasie FM Breakfast Rush
THE RIGHT TO LIFE Saturday 21 March is Human Rights Day, and 2015 marks 21 years of a new democratic dispensation in a country that is troubled by a disturbing past but has forged ahead to enact one of the most liberal constitutions in the entire world. We spoke reconciliation when the opposite was expected; blood was spilled and sacrifices were made by ordinary people to ensure we had equal treatment irrespective of race or gender, among other things. We indeed have a lot to celebrate, including the contributions made by the women and children of our soil, who kept things together when it was impossible to do so - they still deserve a lot of support from all sectors of our country. As we gear up to commemorate this iconic day, shivers go down my spine when I constantly read and hear about the plight of women losing their lives at the hands of their partners. There are high numbers of women killed by the men in their lives in fits of rage; these men at times turn to kill other family members and then commit suicide.
Page 5
tame TIMES KATLEHONG
Why such carnage? What went wrong with men? Let’s take a moment and reflect on the rights of women versus domestic disputes that keep arising; let’s be reminded of the love that brought us together before committing crimes of passion. There’s a lot of good men in our country: speak up and help our fellow brothers that have broken souls; help them find themselves again so they can blossom in the way they were meant to be. Love is the inspiration that keeps us alive and all of us have it. Woman is God’s greatest gift to man - let us acknowledge her. This Human Rights Day, let’s remind ourselves of the right to life of women, that is just like the right to life that all of us have, and make a concerted effort to create better living conditions for our families and communities at large.

SENTENCED TO LIFE
MOTHER HANDS
FOR KILLING A WOMAN Gcinithemba Prince Phandile was recently found guilty of the rape, murder and kidnapping of 29-year-old Palesa Lesapo and given a life sentence for murder, 10 years imprisonment for rape and six months imprisonment for kidnapping by the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. Detective Warrant Officer Mbuyiselo Mofokeng said that on 5 April 2013, the body of the deceased Palesa Lesapo was found dumped next to a local tavern in Phola Park, Thokoza. “The investigation was conducted and it was discovered that the deceased was residing in Phola Park Extension 5 and was last seen the day before the incident with the accused, Phandile. The investigations continued and the tenants where Phandile is residing told the police that they heard a noise at Phandile’s shack of him assaulting someone the day before the incident,” said Mofokeng. He said they began searching for the Phandile in question as he was then at large. “The deceased’s clothing was found in Phandile’s shack. There were traces of blood on the floor, at the door and on the blankets. The DNA was taken to the forensic laboratory for
examination to discover whether it matched that of the deceased,” said Mofokeng. He said they also received information that Phandile was seen in Brackendowns, Alberton. They used his photograph and managed to spot him in Hennie Albert Street in Brackendowns in the early hours of the morning five days after the incident. “Phandile was arrested and his blood was also taken for DNA for comparison. The DNA come out positive that he raped, assaulted and kidnapped the deceased. Palm Ridge Court found him guilty and he was sentenced. We worked hand in glove with forensic personnel in collecting each and every piece of evidence from the accused’s shack in order to make sure that Phandile was indeed at the shack with the deceased,” Mofokeng said. He advised women not to walk alone at night or go to drinking places on their own, as they tend to become victims of rape and murder because they are defenceless.
OVER SON TO COPS
WELL DONE: to Detective Warrant Officer Mbuyiselo Mofokeng for his hard work and dedication in investigating the murder case.
A mother handed her 19-year-old son over to the police for a murder committed on 8 March on the street in Zone 3. According to the brother of the deceased, he and his 48-yearold brother were on their way home at about 02:00 when they noticed the 19-year-old suspect standing on the street corner with his friends. As they passed, the suspect grabbed the deceased and accused him of having stolen his cellphone. The deceased denied the accusations and a quarrel ensued. During the quarrel, the suspect allegedly drew a knife and stabbed the deceased to death. The suspect then ran away. A murder docket was opened at Zonkizizwe Police Station. The suspect is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Court soon.
“GRANDFATHER” RAPES GRANDDAUGHTER A 52-year-old Thokoza grandfather who allegedly threatened his 15-year-old granddaughter with a knife and raped her has been arrested. According to Thokoza Police Station spokesperson Constable Patrick Mashiane, the rape incident took place on February 27 at the house of the suspect. He said the case of rape was opened at the Thokoza Police
Station and the suspect was finally arrested by the police. “According to the police report, the rape victim was raped by the suspect and was commanded to wash before being raped for the second time by the suspect. Police managed to arrest the suspect. He is now behind bars pending police investigation,” concluded Mashiane.

Kathorus based Extreme Film and Music production house officially screened two of their short films to the public at Kwa Ditselana Cultural Village in Katlehong. The short films that were screened on the day were Okwami Okwezandla and Inguqukho. According to the production house’s Managing Director Abongile Ntsatha, the aim of showing both films in the township was to showcase local talent to the public. “Okwami Okwezandla short film is about a young boy whose parents choose a career path for him. The rebellious youngster finally drops out in his final year at university to pursue a music career. The other film, Inguquko, is about a girl who fell pregnant and abandoned her tertiary studies. Both films were recorded in Kathorus and feature actors from Ekurhuleni and Alexandra,”

explained Ntsatha. The films were written by the talented Xolisa Mpafa and produced by Extreme Film and Music production house. Mpafa said it is high time people revived the culture of township cinema in order to build the film industry. He said he was concerned that nowadays people tend rather to purchase DVDs and watch them in the comfort of their homes. “There is a lot of acting talent in the township that needs to be nurtured in the right direction so that they can realise their dreams. Our production house provided a necessary platform for aspiring actors and film-makers. I am looking forward to the Inguquko short film being shown at the upcoming showcase Durban International Film Festival. Cinema fanatics should expect more from the Extreme Film and Music Production House,” said Mpafa. Entry to the screening was free of charge and ran from 12pm until late in the evening.

Back To The Cross Easter launch
RECENTLY LAUNCHED: Mandlakhe “Duzenaye” Buthelezi is excited about his latest Maskandi DVD.
MTN Joyous Celebration, SA’s most celebrated Gospel ensemble, makes a massive comeback this Easter, as they pave the way for the momentous road to Joyous 20 – a significant milestone for the group which will be celebrated throughout the year. MTN Joyous Celebration is launching their 19th live DVD recording from 3 to 5 April 2015 at the Big Top Arena in Carnival City. This year’s inspirational theme, Back To The Cross, explains their focus for the year, which is all about looking back to where everything started: The Cross. This will be interpreted through the music as the group celebrates old hymns that fans know and love from years gone by, but this time they will have a new feel or “Joyous injection.” Joyous is not only revered in South Africa, but also on the continent and internationally.
They have involved other countries too, not only by visiting them but also by singing in their languages as well. Joyous has involved numerous African languages in many of their projects just to make sure that everyone is included in the project. Joyous Celebration was founded 19 years ago by Lindelani Mkhize, Pastor Jabu Hlongwane and Pastor Mthunzi Namba. They have established this vision together and are still working on it as it grows bigger and better every year. They gave birth not only to Joyous Celebration as a brand, but also to many Gospel stars who started with Joyous Celebration, like: Ntokozo Mbambo, William Sejake, Ndivhuwo Matumba, Margaret Motsage, Sharon Dee, Vicky Vilakazi, Mahalia Buchanan and Thabo Mdluli, to name a few.

rappers MEC PROMISES TO Underground and spinners to shine FIGHT RURAL CRIME Lebo Mosolodi
lebo@tametimes.co.za
Growing up in a township like Soweto and Alexandra, one would never think that rural areas exist in Gauteng. This is partly due to the fact that we associate rural spaces with all other provinces except Gauteng. The reality is that one has to be knowledgeable about the spatial development of the area and what constitutes a rural area. Due to the special focus on urbanisation in our province, such areas are often not prioritised and yet they contribute substantially to the economy of the country. The same could not be said about the Gauteng government, which has identified rural safety and development as one of its key areas of focus. This is largely due to the fact that challenges such as infrastructure development which hampers the provision of services, farm killings, stock theft and labour issues faced by rural communities contribute to instability in the province. Thus, a comprehensive and holistic strategy must be formulated if the safety of these communities is to be guaranteed. South Africa is characterized by high levels of poverty and underdevelopment, especially in the rural areas. Statistics South Africa reported that in 2006, 43.74% of the population lived in rural areas, and these figures are likely to have increased in the past few years. In his State of the Nation address in May 2009, President Jacob Zuma stated that “comprehensive rural development linked to land and agrarian reform and food security” was priority three in the Medium Term Strategic Framework for 2009-2014. Farmers, farm workers and residents within and adjacent to rural communities are often soft targets for criminals. This is due to the remoteness of farms, high market value of properties, long distances between farms, villages and the police station as well as basic infrastructure, such as road networks, that all hamper service delivery and increase response time by the police. As a result of all this, the Department of Community Safety in conjunction with the National Civilian Secretariat for Police and the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development convened a Rural Safety Summit recently. The summit was attended by Farm Owners, Farm Workers, Farm Tenants, the
Transvaal Agricultural Union, Agri S.A, African Farmers Union of South Africa, Agri Gauteng, Farmers Workers Union, who respectively adopted an implementable programme of action (POA) against crime.
A TASK TEAM WITH A CLEAR PROGRAMME OF ACTION WAS ESTABLISHED AND WILL DEAL WITH, AMONG OTHER THINGS: Establishment of rural safety unit per rural station Plot numbering linked with the cell number of the farm owner, so as to ensure safety on the farms and improve accessibility for policing Allocation of proper rural vehicles for rural policing Constant communication between SAPS Rural Safety Coordinator(s) and Rural Safety Forum Chairperson. Safety Forums to incorporate municipality as per the area’s needs Farmers must hire legal and documented workers and create profile cards to be verified at local stations Induction of both farmers and workers on labour law by the Department of Labour, to minimize abuse of workers Farmers working together across racial lines Government must build or improve on social services such as schools, clinics and recreational facilities in rural areas Education and awareness drive on the criminal justice system in rural areas. Education and awareness drive on AgriBEE, so as to empower workers
The task team will commence with the implementation of these recommendations within two months and will report back on the progress made in the next six months. Sizakele Nkosi- Malobane is the MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng.

A group of Katlehong artists under the banner of Ellymark Communications is hosting an event called the Unrecognised Rap Attack at Kromvlei in a bid to give unrecognised artists a platform to showcase their talent. Speaking to the media, event organiser Simphiwe Shipyane said the first edition of the event would be held on April 4 and it would then become an annual occurrence. “Unrecognised rap artists to be featured in their line-up on the day include K1 Dime, Sir-Bigger, Hospital Case, Wolf Pack Clan and Jay Stash. Car fanatics stand a great chance of witnessing some of the township’s most reputable BMW-spinners that will showcase their driving skills. Joyous Celebration holds auditions
JOYOUS CELEBRATION: performs at one of their gigs. MTN Joyous Celebration will host auditions for the cast of Joyous 20 starting from March, giving the public at large a chance to be part of this well-known gospel ensemble. Auditions will be held in most major cities across the country, kicking off on 31 March and running until September 2016, when they conclude the Joyous 19 tour. If anyone thinks they have what it takes to be a part of this amazing project, this is their chance! Applicants need to register by sending an SMS to a number and will in turn receive a reference number that secures their place in the auditions. Auditions will be held in each of the Joyous 19 tour hosting cities within the week of the performance, starting with Johannesburg and including Port Elizabeth, Durban, Middelburg, Bloemfontein and Rustenburg. Shortlisted and successful candidates will be informed between September and October 2015. “There is so much talent in Mzansi and we are looking forward to adding some unique, new and fresh talented vocalists and musicians to our choir and band to be introduced and unveiled to the South Africa public through the Joyous 20 production,” says co-founder of the gospel group, Lindelani Mkhize. Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN SA, said they believe that these auditions are crucial for music development in the country and will play a major role in further unearthing the kinds of musical gems that our country is so richly blessed with.
For the Gauteng leg of the auditions, the SMS line opens on Wednesday 4 March 2015 and closes at midday on Monday 30 March 2015. Interested individuals over the age of 16 years must first decide if they are auditioning as vocalists (soprano, alto, bass or tenor) or as musicians playing instruments. Then they must SMS “AUDITION GAUTENG VOCAL” or “AUDITION GAUTENG INSTRUMENT” to 38008 to register – SMS charged at R10. They will then receive a reference number securing their registration. Auditions will take place at the end of March at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). Preregistration is compulsory in order to audition. MTN Joyous Celebration will also launch the much anticipated Joyous 19 CD and DVD titled Back to the Cross from 3- 5 April at the Big Top Arena in Carnival City.

Local karate stars impress away Lebo Mosolodi
lebo@tametimes.co.za The Katlehong based Shorinkempo Karate Club athletes dished out five-star performances in the Shinkoyokushin Karate Tournament at Klerksdorp in North West province. According to the team’s coach Thulani Sibisi, the four athletes, namely Mbali Msomi, Tumelo Tsotetsi, Teboho Motloung and Keke Nkopane, were chosen on merit. “There were 14 athletic teams coming across the country - Botswana, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. We had a total of 194 athletes that took part in the tournament. Only one of our athletes did not proceed to the finals but the other three of our athletes reached the finals,” explained coach Sibisi. Tumelo Tsotetsi and Teboho Motloung obtained position 2 and 4 respectively in the boys under-55
kilogram division. Keke Nkopane lost in the early stages of the ladies under-55 kilogram division and Mbali Msomi obtained position 3 in the ladies open division. Sibisi cited that they owe their success in the competition to good preparation that took place before the tournament and tough training. “Our main stumbling block in the competition was the foreign nationals we competed against because we did not know their style of fighting and their history,” said Coach Sibisi. Meanwhile, Katlehong based Shorinkempo Karate Club will be hosting the fifth edition of the Shorin-kempo Kaikan Karate Tournament in Thokoza Auditorium on May 30. He said their target is to register 400 athletes for the tournament. For more information about the event contact Coach Thulani Sibisi on: 083 599 5916.
