YOUNG MAN’S DEATH Charity Moyo

The deceased could not hear people screaming and shouting, or even the sound of the train hooting because of the earphones in his ears. The man, who was aged between 25 and 35, was smashed into mincemeat and killed by a train a few metres away from the Pilot train station in Katlehong on Monday. Sergeant Welcome Simawu said the incident happened around 5 am; the deceased and three other unknown males were walking on the railway lines on their way to Pilot train station to take a train. The deceased had his

He said the deceased had not yet been identified and the SIM card is going to be used in the investigations. “An inquest docket has been opened at Katlehong North Police Station. We are appealing to people not to put earphones in while walking on the road and in the railway crossing - they should use them at home only. We also warn people not to walk inside the railway lines as it is prohibited,” said Simawu. Sibongile Nkosi, a concerned resident,

I am pleading with the younger generation to stop using the earphones especially when outside their home and not to be addicted to them,” said Nkosi.

Pantsula dancers win Kathorus’s Got Talent Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za
Rise in Africa pantsula dance group won Kathorus’s Got Talent competition and walked away with R10 000 from the final event, which was held at Vosloorus Crossing Mall. The second prize of R2,500 was won by another pantsula group, Illumination Great Dancers. Rise in Africa dance group consists of two members: Mlungisi Mchunu (20) and Malifetsane Thaba (22). Mchunu is a renowned pantsula dancer who won the Jika Majika dance competition television show aired on SABC 1 twice in 2010 and in early January this year. Speaking to tame TIMES, Mlungisi Mchunu said, “We are delighted that we won and we have learned that patience pays in the end. We have lost all our group members and only two of us are left because there was no income coming in.” He said they will use the money to register their group as a non-profit organisation, to buy a camera and dancing costumes. “I encourage young people who are passionate about dancing to participate in the local dancing competitions to nurture their talents,” said Mchunu. Azona Sobantu, Director of
Illumination Great Dancers (IGD), said it was the first time their group won a Kathorus dance competition and they would use the money to buy dance costumes. “We are happy and privileged in that our work is appreciated by the community. We also encourage other young stars to continue showcasing their talents,” said Sobantu. Paul Radebe, organiser of Kathorus’s Got Talent competition, said, “We achieved more than our expectations - the public who supported the competition gained and the talent was identified. Dj Clock and Lady Du will also be using some of the participants in their music videos. It was a good and successful competition and the next edition will be held next year.” Kathorus’s Got Talent competition was sponsored by Vosloorus Crossing Mall in partnership with Kasie FM and was held in an open space at Vosloorus Crossing Mall.
PANTSULA HEROES: Illumination Great Dancers and Rise in Africa dance groups were the winners of Kathorus’s Got Talent competition.

Zonkizizwe electricity upgrade
6
As the winter period is fast approaching, Zonkizizwe residents are getting ready for constant power outages which leave the area dark. Electricity blackouts will soon be a thing of the past in the area, as Eskom is embarking on a rollout of electricity upgrades in Zonkizizwe. Ward 61 Councillor Teboho Letsoha said in the beginning the area was an informal settlement and Eskom gave each household 20 amps electricity capacity for usage. “In recent times, the area has acquired a township status and the population has gradually grown,” he explained. “The demand for electricity has recently doubled, which has paved the way for the electricity upgrading project. After the completion of the project, each household will increase its electricity capacity from 20 amps to 60 amps. Electricity cables, electricity poles, transformers, household meter boxes and DB boxes in Zonkizizwe will be replaced.” Councillor Letsoha said the objective of the project is to promote safety and to reduce the electricity hazards often caused by illegal electricity connections in the area. He said their aim is to connect everybody living in the area to Eskom. “A blanket electricity amnesty applies to all people living in the area, including customers who illegally connected electricity. Clients who are behind in the payment of their debts to the giant electricity supplier will also benefit from the amnesty. In return, each household will get an independent electricity account with Eskom,” said Letsoha. He said Eskom appointed an independent contractor and that no local subcontractors have yet been hired for the project. Letsoha said only 13 local people were selected from the area to work on the project. “The 13 local residents already underwent an Eskom training programme. Local people will also be employed to work on the project which will take a minimum of 12 months to be completed,” concluded Letsoha.

MOTORISTS URGED TO PARK SAFE Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za Police are warning motorists to refrain from parking in drive-ways and on pavements to avoid becoming victims of car hijacking. Captain Mega Ndobe, spokesperson of Katlehong Police Station, urged motorists to use parking lanes and park inside the premises of places they visit to avoid being hijacked. Ndobe cited some recent incidents of hijacking in Spruitview, where a victim was hijacked in a drive-way. It is alleged that
the victim was entering the premises before opening the gate when he was attacked and his vehicle was taken. He said another incident also happened in Moleleki Extension 1, where the victim was in a car parked outside with his girlfriend. They were attacked by three people who forced them into the back seat and drove to Riverside with them. They took their cellphones and laptops, and left the victims in the car. “People should refrain from parking their vehicles in open spaces as this attracts criminals,” said Ndobe.

NOTE FROM THE
April is a significant month, not only for the residents of Ekurhuleni (as it is Chris Hani Month) but for the nation as well, as it is also Freedom Month. Last week we celebrated the 22nd commemoration of the death of Chris Hani and Ekurhuleni residents were delighted that their own hero’s grave was declared a national heritage site by President Jacob Zuma at Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg. The acknowledgement of hero’s graves, such as the one of Chris Hani, is important, as he contributed to the democracy that we are enjoying today. On 27 April we will also be celebrating Freedom Day and people will be reminded what is meant by freedom and what contributed to their freedom. There are many people who abuse their freedom or take it for granted, while others treasure it. It is very important to understand our freedom and appreciate those who played a significant role in making sure that we enjoy its fruits today. This fortnight we have interesting news of the pantsula dancers who won Kathorus’s Got Talent, Ekurhuleni residents are invited to voice their opinions on Integrated Development and Planning (IDP) and there are details of crime stories around Kathorus. We are also giving our readers an opportunity to send their views, opinion pieces and comments on issues happening around their neighbourhood. These contributions will be published in the newspaper. To send your comments, email: charity@tametimes.co.za. Cheers for now and enjoy reading your favourite Kasie newspaper.

CHRIS HANI REMEMBERED Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za President Jacob Zuma declared Martin Thembisile ‘Chris’ Hani’s grave a national heritage site at Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park, Boksburg on 10 April. The event coincides with the 22nd commemoration of the death of Hani. President Zuma also unveiled the Chris Hani Memorial and Walk of Remembrance Monument. The wife of the late Chris Hani, Dimpho Hani, and other dignitaries, laid wreaths at the grave-site. “This celebrated leader of the ANC and SACP and our people as a whole, and a soldier and chief of staff of Umkhonto Wesizwe, dedicated his life to the struggle for freedom, equality, justice, human dignity and a better life for all the people of South Africa,” said Zuma, addressing the crowd during the launch. He added that the 22nd anniversary of the commemoration of Hani’s death took place during an important year, the year of the Freedom Charter. Chris Hani believed in the Freedom Charter, the President said, and quoted the following words by Hani: “It was important to have an ANC which accepted the Freedom Charter, which committed itself to the implementation of the Freedom Charter. And we felt that the Freedom Charter was a revolutionary document in terms of the struggle for national liberation and democracy.” The President further urged people to continue working hard to deepen and

consolidate democracy in the country as a memory to Hani, “and also deepen the extension of services to all, especially the poor and the working class.” Hani’s commemoration day was attended by many political and union leaders, such as Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education and Training and the General Secretary of the SACP; Thulas Nxesi, Public
Works Minister; Sidumo Dlamini, President of COSATU; Gwede Mantashe, General Secretary of the ANC; Mondli Gungubele, Ekurhuleni Mayor and other ministers, deputy ministers and MECs. Chris Hani, the former South African Communist Party leader, was shot and killed in the drive-way of his Dawn Park, Boksburg, home on 10 April 1993.
Pre-winter safety campaign launched
WINTER IS COMING: Fire-fighters put out the flames of a shack that was set alight during a demonstration at the launch of the campaign. Instead of putting out a fire, emergency services set a shack on fire during the launch of the Ekurhuleni Pre-Winter Fire Safety campaign at Gugulethu/Everest informal settlement in Springs. The annual fire safety awareness campaign, themed “Call us in time, We arrive on time,” will be held to re-educate residents about fire safety ahead of the approaching winter season when paraffin stoves, liquefied petroleum gas heaters and braziers (imbawula) will be used to keep warm. Tumelo Lephosa, a resident from Angelo informal settlement who is a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), said the demonstration involving a burning shack made the message more
tangible for residents who attended the launch. “After seeing us in action today, the community understands the role we play and how they can assist us in extinguishing such fires using the bucket brigade system instead of standing in a crowd and watching someone’s home burn to ashes,” he said. The 649 CERT members who were present at the launch have been deployed to be the first in line to respond to fire incidents in all 119 informal settlements within the City of Ekurhuleni, while emergency response officials make their way to a scene. “The number of shack fire fatalities and injuries in Ekurhuleni has dropped since 2008. That is a clear indication that the prewinter fire safety campaigns and the efforts of
the Community Emergency Response Teams go a long way in saving lives,” said Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety Clr Vivian Chauke. In closing, the MMC urged the CERT members who have been trained in first aid, basic fire fighting, bucket fire brigading, disaster reduction and public education, to impart their knowledge to other community members so that everyone will be able to help put out the flames in the event of a fire. The fire safety awareness campaign will run until the end of August, when the Ekurhuleni Emergency and Disaster Management Services team will visit informal settlements across the city and educate them on precautions to take to avoid fires and what to do in the event of a fire breaking out.

KATLEHONG CPF CHAIRPERSON IN HOT WATER A vehicle that was hijacked in Booysens last month was found in the Katlehong CPF chairperson’s yard. The incident has left the 55 year-old CPF chairperson in murky waters, as he was arrested for possession of the hijacked Golf 7. Captain Mega Ndobe, spokesperson of Katlehong Police Station said, “When the police arrived at the CPF chairperson’s house, he gave the police the car keys.” He added that he was surprised; because, during their campaigns, they talk about not allowing stolen vehicles in their yards. “He will be charged with unlawful possession of a hijacked vehicle and he is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Court soon,” said Ndobe.
A 25-year-old woman was arrested for stealing a laptop from the Lieutenant Colonel’s office inside Katlehong Police Station last week. It is alleged that the suspect was at the police station as a result of the warrant of arrest issued against her for failing to appear in court after she was arrested for shoplifting. Captain Mega Ndobe said, “Lieutenant Colonel left for the toilet, leaving the office unlocked and the laptop was under the table. It is alleged that the suspect entered the office unnoticed, took the laptop and left the station.” On his return from the toilet, the Lieutenant Colonel noticed that his bag had been searched and the laptop was missing. It is alleged that the suspect gave the laptop to her boyfriend and he then sold it to a foreign national. “The laptop was found wrapped with a plastic at the Natalspruit taxi rank ready to be transported to Maputo. The suspect was arrested for theft and she attempted to commit suicide at the Katlehong Police Station cells,” said Ndobe. The suspect appeared in Palm Ridge Court on Monday.

“My sister’s wife” raising awareness

THE FILM: My Sister’s Wife raises hidden realities about people’s perceptions about lesbians in society.
DANCE HOPEFULS: Thembalemihla Youth Club showcases their talents during a rehearsal. The Zonkizizwe based Thembalemihla Youth Club brings light and hope to aspiring dancers from the area; but a lack of resources, ranging from costumes, music system and transportation is still a stumbling block. Due to their shortage of space for practice sessions, a generous neighbour has offered them space and musical equipment for rehearsal purposes every weekday afternoon. Nonkulunga Ngcobo, the organisation’s treasurer, said they have a shortage of dance uniforms and equipment, and a lack of transportation for dancers
when they perform far from home. “We are often invited to perform at weddings, birthdays and various community events to entertain the guests. In most cases I ended up using my money to transport dancers coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. It puts enormous financial constraints on us, because our dance instructors are volunteers in the club. Our dancers range from 14 to 16 years in age - both male and female,” said Ngcobo. She cited that their club started five years ago with the aim of unearthing and nurturing local dancing talent. “We want local youth to
channel their energy productively. We offer various dance classes ranging from Kofifi, Jive, Ballroom, Traditional, Hip-hop and Sbujwa dance. We also have musical choir, netball team and gumboots dance groups,” explained Ngcobo. Zonkizizwe is one of the most impoverished and underdeveloped townships, but Ngcobo and her colleagues are determined that the youth will not be depressed by their circumstances. People willing to sponsor the organisation should contact Nonkululeko Ngcobo on: 073 879 5614.
Changing Maskandi music dimensions Msikiseni “Umashuzana” Mavundla’s latest Maskandi 12-track album is a marvel to listen to and reflects his true life experiences. Through his music, Mavundla encourages youngsters to respect elders in their communities. “Three of the best tracks that could be found in the album include Dlala Mashuzana, Kahle Makhelwane and Bongiwe. Dlala Mashuzana is among the fans’ favourite hit tracks. Kahle Makhelwane is another hit song, which inspires unity among neighbours and the Bongiwe hit track is my favourite track dedicated to my ex-lover,” explained Mavundla. The album was composed by
Mavundla and produced by the reputable Maskandi music producer Mabhalani Ndlovu. Backing artists featured in the album are Mabhalani Ndlovu and Fihliskhwele Magubani. His music is played in taxis and during Zulu cultural festivals. “I have featured in some of Maskandi music festivals held in Thembisa Hostel, Buyafuthi Hostel and Vosloorus Hostel. My goal is to perform alongside renowned Maskandi legend Khuzani Mpongose. During winter I will be working on my second Maskandi album that is expected to be on the market before the end of the year,” said Mavundla. For booking contact Msikiseni Mavundla on: 074 829 2796.
The Thokoza based Black Dog Records company has recently released their latest short film called “My Sister’s Wife,” which is raising awareness on the acceptance and denial of lesbians in families. Speaking to tame TIMES, the movie producer John Mthembu said the film is about 45 minutes long. “It is about the conservative father of a lesbian woman called Sazi who did not accept that his daughter was a lesbian. The family is split between the supportive mother and the conservative father who did not accept the wedding of his daughter,” said Mthembu. The brother of Sazi is originally from the rural parts of KwaZulu-Natal and is amazed by the fact that his sister has become a lesbian after she relocated to Thokoza. The conservative man is finally seduced by the wife of Sazi and impregnates her, which spoils the relationship between the siblings. The message this movie is sending out to the public is that people should not discriminate against gays and lesbians. “We should start accepting people for who they are. People are independent and we should not expect that they would live the way the society expects them to,” said Mthembu. The film was shot in Thokoza and the bulk of the actors that featured in the movie are from Ekurhuleni. Black Dog Records sells their short films from the boot of a car and the money generated is split within the acting crew as part of their payment. He urges local business people to start investing in the local film industry. For more information about My Sister’s Wife, contact John Mthembu on: 078 735 8732.

“SENSEI THULANI SIBISI DESCRIBES SENSEI MSOMI AS A PASSIONATE ATHLETE”
lebo@tametimes.co.za
Hard work and determination are what have led to the great success of the 24-year-old Mbali Msomi as she continues to be a rising star in the Katlehong based Shorni-Kempo-Kai-Kan Karate Club. The talented Sensei Msomi joined her local karate club 12 years ago and never looked back. Sensei Msomi said that she became passionate about karate sports while growing up in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal. “Boys in our village had the privilege of partaking in stick fighting while girls were barred from taking part in the sport. When we relocated to Ekurhuleni, I joined the Katlehong based Shorni-Kempo-Kai-Kan Karate Club. Karate is my favourite sport where I express my God-given talent to the
world generously,” she explained. Sensei Msomi usually takes part in four karate tournaments each year and has gained enormous experience while fighting with reputable karate athletes. The young woman has already won three karate tournaments. “I won both the Jacob Zuma Karate Tournament that was held in Durban three years ago and the ShorinKempo Karate Tournament that was held in Thokoza Auditorium in 2010. I also won the Sherin Kempo International Tournament held in Thokoza Auditorium in 2014 and obtained position three in Shinkyokushinkai Karate Tournament held in North West Province early this year,” said Sensei Msomi. She said the sport plays a vital role in keeping
her fit at all times. “Ladies should use the sport for self-defence purposes against criminals. I have a Second Dan Black Belt which qualifies me as a karate instructor. I have already showcased my karate skills in countries, namely Zimbabwe and Japan. My goal is to compete in Japan again so I can surpass my poor performance displayed during my debut year in the Japan karate tourney held many years ago,” she said. Sensei Thulani Sibisi describes Sensei Msomi as a passionate athlete, hard worker and a great asset to their club. However, the talented Sensei Msomi is appealing to the business sector to start investing in Karate for the sport to be on equal footing with other sporting codes.

AMAKHOSI ON TRACK TO LIFT LEAGUE TROPHY Kaizer Chiefs Football Club finally put their foot on the accelerator in their bid to lift the ABSA Premier Soccer League trophy when they walloped Amatuks 1-0 in Tshwane at Tuks Stadium. Amakhosi veteran midfielder Simphiwe “Shaba” Tshabalala scored a brilliant free kick goal which secured a win for the visiting team. Chiefs’ great performance placed a 13-point gap between them and the second- placed Mamelodi Sundowns. Amakhosi are focussing on the league to redeem their pride as they are already out of the Africa Champions League and Nedbank Cup. Winning the league is their only ticket for them to return to play again in Africa. Amakhosi’s previous horrible experience
of leaving the league in the hands of the Brazilians - after being on the summit of the league for the greater part of the season before they were unseated by the Brazilians - remained a bad experience which left bitter memories for most Amakhosi players and faithful supporters. This time around, Amakhosi’s technical team drummed it into the player’s ears and minds that they must focus until their last game of the league. BIDVest Wits surprised everyone when they walloped the third-placed Orlando Pirates 2-0 in a game that was played at BIDVest Stadium in Johannesburg. Calvin Kadi was a star performer on the day, when he netted a brace for the Clever Boys.
Meanwhile, as the ABSA Premier Soccer League is fast reaching its final stages, tame TIMES reveals names of some of the five topperforming players that set the league alight this current season. Polokwane City striker Puleng Tlolae has netted 10 goals in his debut season in the PSL. Thulani Hlatswayo has become a mainstay of BIDVest and Bafana defence; and Orlando Pirates winger Thabo Rakhale’s dribbling skills cannot be left unnoticed as he continues to mesmerise opposition teams with ease. The Brazilians midfield maestro Teko Modise has reclaimed his dominance in the heart of the Brazilian team; and Free State Stars free- scoring striker Moeketsi Sekola has been banging in Kaizer Chiefs objective of winning the league is six points away after they won their last goals for the Free State team. league game.
