Intokozo celebrates half a century Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za
HALF A CENTURY: Intokozo Primary School alumni take pride in their former school’s 50th anniversary.
Intokozo Primary School in Katlehong, which was established in 1964, has just celebrated its 50th anniversary. The school hosted a celebratory event on their premises, inviting alumni, community members and various stakeholders to join them. Among the alumni present were Phindile Baleni, the chief executive officer of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa and Dr Thokozani Mathebula, a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand. Dressed in their graduation gowns, they glowed with pride in the school that educated them, and some even sponsored the event. As it celebrates 50 years of education, Intokozo Primary school takes pride in the professional success of its former learners, namely: Professor Zeblon Zenzele Vilakazi; Khaya Ngema, Ekurhuleni City Manager; Fihliwe Nkomo, Group Human Resources Director at Peermont Global Ltd; John Khabonina Zondo, assistant coach of
Mamelodi Sundowns and Sibusiso Kumalo, Mamelodi Sundowns soccer player. The school also prides itself on its academic success. This is a consequence of the school’s 50 years of operation, which is unlike the performance of many other schools which have been shut down. The school’s enrolment of learners has been stable through the years and this has contributed to its survival. School principal Zenzele Mazibuko said, “We have many things to be proud of as the school turns 50. The school has moved from being an underperforming school to performing in terms of ANA. We have produced alumni learners who are professors and doing well in their different fields of study. Our recent learners also represented Ekurhuleni in mental maths and poetry. Some of them got district awards in recognition of their excellent academic work.” He added that the school belongs to the community. Besides being an academic institution, they are also using it for various activities such as community meetings, church events and food gardening.

Happy Heritage Month September is Heritage Month, but in most cases people fail to understand the meaning of heritage. Firstly, we tend to define a person as belonging to a certain race or tribe because of the food they eat, their language and the clothes they wear, to mention a few characteristics. Heritage is about our traditions and roots that show where a person belongs. It is crucial to know where we come from, as this is what guides us in life. With westernisation, most people are neglecting their cultures and becoming assimilated into other peoples’ cultures. On the other hand, those people whose cultures we are following are not even copying ours, which means they are proud of their cultures. This is a lesson to all of us to be proud and to preserve our own cultures. As we celebrate Heritage Month, let us all show pride in our cultures by wearing our traditional regalia and doing all our cultural activities as a symbol of honouring this month. Happy Heritage Month…..
Cheers for now. Charity Moyo

Ekurhuleni to register churches
In a mission to resolve illegal land occupation, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) is calling upon the religious community to come forward to register their organizations and have them placed on the municipality’s database of churches. The accreditation process opened on 11 September and will run until 10 October 2014. Religious leaders can obtain and also submit application forms for accreditation at their nearest Customer Care Area (CCA) offices. The forms will be collected from the CCA by the Health and Social Development Department and feedback will be given to the applicants after the database has been formed. The registration will serve as part of an accreditation process to determine the eligibility of churches to access land and municipal facilities. This stems from discussions which took place at the Religious Summit held in Germiston in December
last year. At the Summit, religious leaders articulated their difficulties in acquiring land for their churches and four options were presented as a proposed solution for these: option 1 - leasing of schools owned by Department of Education as a short term solution; option 2 - leasing of Council-owned facilities as a short term solution; option 3 leasing and acquiring of Council-owned land as a long term solution; and option 4 - EMM to construct Church Precincts, where space shall be shared by various churches on a rotational basis. While the Metro’s Real Estate Department pursues these options, the Health and Social Development Department has established an accreditation process which serves to gather information on the churches that exist within the region. Accreditation will provide the EMM with an indication of whether a religious formation meets the basic criteria to bid for Council-owned land.
According to Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, accreditation of churches will ensure the optimization of resources by streamlining processes that will lead to proper land management and further ensure accountability. The accreditation database will also be used when engaging with external stakeholders such as the Department of Education on the use of schools as places of worship. Gadebe urges churches to apply to register. He said accredited churches will distinguish themselves from non-accredited churches and will therefore have the advantage of being eligible to obtain land through the bidding process. “The accredited churches will qualify to be prioritized for the use of municipal facilities as a place of worship and the accreditation is free of charge,” said Gadebe.
VANDERBIJLPARK. – What happens when a renowned female South African rock singer, guitarist, and song-writer teams up with an Indian-born South African comedian, actor and doctor? Magic! This is according to Alwine Naude, Alumni Coordinator at the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal) and organiser of the NWU Vaal Alumni Gala Dinner 2014. This year, alumni and friends of the campus from across South Africa will be treated to a unique entertainment experience featuring Karen Zoid and Riaad Moosa. The theme of this year’s event is “Celebrate” and the event serves a dual purpose; not only does it serve as a platform from where the campus can celebrate its alumni community
but also the 10th anniversary of the founding of the North-West University. The NorthWest University (with its three campuses) came into being on 1 January 2004 as part of the transformation of the higher education landscape in South Africa. The institutions that came together to create the NWU were the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE) and the University of North-West (UNIBO). In the case of the Vaal Triangle Campus, the staff and students of the Sebokeng Campus of the Vista University were also incorporated. The event will take place at the Quest Conference Estate in Vanderbijlpark on Thursday 30 October and the cost amounts to R2 300 per table of ten guests or R250 per
person. For more information or bookings, please contact Alwine on 082 802 9299 or send an email Alwine. naude@nwu. ac.za .

Case opened against STAND A CHANCE TO Satanic learners WIN 10 YEARS charity@tametimes.co.za A case of conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder has been opened against four learners at the Katlehong Police Station by the mother of the pupil whom the Katlehong learners suspected of practising Satanism were allegedly planning to kill. This was confirmed by Captain Mega Ndobe, Communications Officer of Katlehong Police Station, who said also that the alleged potential murder victim was also suspected to be a member of the group of learners involved in Satanism. He said the mother of the victim was not present during the first meeting held at Katlehong Police Station at which the other
parents signed a plea bargain to the effect that the learners should not be arrested but rather be removed from the school. “The detectives are still investigating the incident and there is a possibility that it can lead to more suspects being arrested. The results of the investigations and the docket will be taken to court for a decision to be made,” said Captain Ndobe. A group of learners at a certain school based in Katlehong are alleged to be practising Satanism and to have conspired to kill their school-mate and themselves. The four members of the group have been removed from the school.

Learners walk against drug abuse Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za
Learners from Lungisani Primary School in Katlehong took to the streets around their community in Siluma Section, campaigning against drug abuse. They sang songs about liberating themselves from drug and child abuse while walking around Siluma Section. Marching, they carried placards printed with antidrug messages and written appeals to the community for intervention in eradicating drug abuse in the area. Gana Dhlamini, an educator and the facilitator of the campaign, told tame TIMES that many people in the area were using drugs and
that they were spreading the message that the community had to stop it. “There are people who are smoking nyaope and dagga in the area. This has resulted in numerous crimes such as house robbery and burglary as addicts look for money to buy drugs. It also affects their health and we want to stop it before they spread it among the learners,” said Dhlamini. He added that the walk was part of Life Orientation, as it encourages a healthy lifestyle and promotes the well-being of the learners, as well as being good for exercising their bodies.

Learners celebrate Heritage Month
By Zeb Mathobela
The Grade Seven learners of Kabelo Primary School in Katlehong dressed up in their bright traditional attire, showing how proud they are of their traditions - as part of celebrating Heritage Day. The learners recited African poems and engaged in storytelling. They also performed a number of different traditional songs, with their accompanying dances. School educators emphasized the importance of
heritage, saying that it builds one’s identity and helps one to know where one comes from, and encouraged the learners to be proud of their culture. The learners were also taught about food and clothes of other cultures. Learner Diketso Mkhonto said she learnt a great deal from Heritage Day, especially about Xhosa culture, which she previously did not know much about.

Manzini honours Heritage Day AFTER PLAYING LOTTO FOR 5-YEARS WITH OUT WINNING Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za As part of celebrating Heritage Day, learners and educators of Manzini Primary School in Katlehong dressed up in cultural attire and showcased all their traditional cultural dances. Kenneth Sibisi, the principal of Manzini Primary School said the event is about
taking the learners back to their roots. “Heritage is a concept of Ubuntu, language, culture, customs and tradition. We have lost the sense of our true identity and humanity, embracing something that does not belong to us. Heritage is celebrated once a year and there is a need for it to be celebrated every time to remind people of where they come from.”
“I USED AKEEM’S SUPER MAGIC RING & WALLET AND I WON SAME DAY”
Mrs KK Lebohang, 48; (Vosloorus)
After my husband lost his job, we decided to start up a small business but it collapsed too. We struggled to pay the car & house bond, Finally the bank repossessed them. Without any income my only option was to play lotto & casino in order to pay bills. But for 5-years I could not win a single game, so we were supported by friends & family to pay bills. I tried seeking help from different prophets but they only kept on asking me for more & more money without any single results. Luckily I met an old friend of mine in town, who told me how Akeem had helped her win lotto with a super magic ring & also was using Akeem’s money wallet to get money daily. I decided to go and have my last chance as I was in a financial crisis. I booked an appointment & paid R100 consultation fee.
Happy moments; Mrs KK Lebohang shows off her two winning lotto tickets at the grocery store. For 5-years she had tried & failed to win till she met Akeem
And without me saying a single word to Akeem, he read my fortune & accurately told me everything about my past & present life. I was shocked! Every single detail about me was so true.
He then performed a special prayer to cleanse me, thereafter gave me the FREE super magic ring & money wallet for lotto & casino games. It was on the weekend when I played lotto & casino; I was so surprised I had the winning numbers after 5-years of trying & failing to win. If you have tried everything & nothing seems to work for you, don’t lose hope! Visit Super magic Ring; Magic Money Wallet; (receive money daily) Akeem & experience a new beginning in life. You won’t be disappointed; (for lotto & casino) Without him my life could have been so miserable. Five suspects arrested for numerous crimes
25 September - 03 October 2014
Drunken brawl leads to murder Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za A 34-year-old man was arrested for stabbing to death a 23-year-old Mozambican man in Siphamandla squatter camp in Katlehong recently. According to Sergeant Soyamo Simawu from Katlehong Police Station, the deceased and the suspect were drinking alcohol together when they had an argument that turned into a fight. He said during the fight the suspect took a knife and stabbed the deceased to death. The suspect is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Court soon, on charges of murder. DRINKING IS DANGEROUS: Arresting officer Malesela Malope holds the hand of the suspect arrested for murder.
CRIME SPREE OVER: The five arrested suspects, which include the girlfriend of one of them, and the recovered firearm, cellphones, wallets and bank cards Four men and one woman suspected to be linked to a string of robberies, murders and hijackings were arrested on Monday around 6am in Katlehong. A stolen firearm, a toy gun resembling the real thing, three stolen vehicles, twenty four cellphones, several bank cards and wallets were recovered by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Community Liaison Unit members. Subsequent to receiving a tip-off, Metro Police officers kept the men under surveillance for five long days so as to check the activities they were engaging in as well as their movements, EMPD spokesperson, Wilfred Kgasago said. “The staking out of the suspects’ residences in Katlehong commenced on Wednesday last week. The Metro Police officers decided to pounce on Monday and two suspects were
apprehended in Phooko section - one of them with a girlfriend - and another two in Phadima section,” Kgasago explained. Since reliable information had been received that pointed to the four men working together to commit the crimes, they were all charged with possession of a stolen 9mm CZ75 pistol and ammunition, as well as possession of three motor vehicles. The Toyota Corolla, Toyota Conquest and the VW Golf 5 were hijacked in Springs, Benoni and Meyerton respectively. The former two were hijacked in August and the latter was hijacked on 7 September. The charges were registered at Katlehong North Police Station. In-depth investigations are underway to verify the four men’s involvement in a string of crimes committed recently in Ekurhuleni. They are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
77 suspects arrested In a bid to bring law and order to the Kathorus area in Ekurhuleni, police officers arrested 77 suspects for various crimes over the weekend. Speaking to Tame TIMES, Katlehong police spokesperson Mega Ndobe said six suspects were arrested for one murder in Eden Park. “One suspect was arrested for the theft of a firearm and the theft of cash in Vosloorus. Another suspect was arrested for indecent assault and yet another suspect was arrested for shoplifting. 15
suspects were arrested for possession of dagga in various parts of Kathorus,” explained Ndobe. He also said eight suspects were arrested for drinking in public and one suspect was arrested on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant. Ndobe said other arrests were also made over the weekend for various crimes that ranged from assault, theft and fraud to using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Man arrested for unlicensed gun A 34-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on the street in Zonkizizwe Zone 4 recently. According to Zonkizizwe Police Station Communications Officer Sergeant Rufus Tema, the police officers were told by an anonymous caller that there were people fighting and one was in possession of a firearm. When the police arrived on the
scene, the suspect ran away. A chase ensued, the suspect was caught and after being searched, he was found to be in possession of a revolver and ammunition. Tema said that after the suspect failed to show the police a licence for the firearm, the suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm. He has already appeared in Heidelberg Court.
Missing 28-yearold man Zola Ntsodo (28) went missing on 2 September 2013. He was last seen on his way to board a taxi going to Johannesburg from Kwanele section in Katlehong. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should contact Warrant Officer France Sithusa on 082 524 5381\ 011 617 363 or report to the nearest police station.

Page 9 It is the season of spring, everything is bright and colourful, the sun is shining and everybody wants cold food to cool themselves down. This is the time of year when people enjoy cold beverages and desserts. This fortnight in our cooking column, Crissy from Ubuntu Creative School is sharing with us one of her favourite recipes - a delicious spring strawberries and cream trifle.
Crissy’s Spring Strawberries ‘n Cream Trifle Ingredients: - 1kg bought sponge cake, cut into 2-3cm pieces - 300ml tub thickened cream, whipped - Strawberries, washed, stalks removed, halved, to decorate - Pure icing sugar, to dust - Strawberry compote - 3 x 250g punnets strawberries, washed, stalks removed - 375ml (1 1/2 cups) dessert wine - 55g (1/4 cup) caster sugar - Vanilla custard - 35g (1/4 cup) custard powder - 55g (1/4 cup) caster sugar - 625ml (2 ½ cups) milk - 250ml (1 cup) thickened cream - 1 teaspoon vanilla essence or strawberry essence - 250g mascarpone cream cheese
Method:
Step 1 To make the strawberry compote, stir the strawberries, wine and sugar in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 5-10 minutes or until strawberries are soft but still hold their shape. Set aside to cool completely. Step 2 To make the vanilla custard, combine the custard powder and sugar in a medium saucepan. Whisk in the milk and cream until smooth. Add the vanilla essence. Whisk over mediumlow heat until the mixture boils and thickens. Boil, while stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Transfer to a heatproof bowl. Cover the surface of the custard with plastic wrap to prevent a skin forming. Set aside to cool completely. Remove and discard the vanilla bean. Fold the mascarpone cream cheese into the custard. Step 3 Place half the sponge cake in a 3 litre (12-cup) capacity glass serving bowl. Top with half the strawberry compote and half the custard. Repeat with remaining sponge, strawberry compote and custard. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge overnight to chill. Step 4 Top with cream and strawberries. Dust with icing sugar.

New beginnings
What happened to the practice of the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child?” With society and times evolving, we have seen a huge disintegration of our moral compass as a nation. Gone are the days when we lived with humanity (umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu), embracing unity and seeing a healthier family structure due to a collective input. We grew up in a time when a child did not belong to the biological parents alone, but also to the community. The child was disciplined by anybody within the community when found doing wrong. In the old days substance abuse was in existence, but not perpetuated as it is nowadays. Culture also plays a crucial role in assisting people, especially youth, in becoming better people. We are faced with a huge identity crisis and until our children know who they are, we will always be challenged as a nation. Let us build, and bring back the essence of our morals. If proper guidance is given to our children and our communities, we will be safe and secure. Happy Heritage Month. Driver calls for end to licence corruption Charity Moyo
Teenage pregnancy remains a challenge Charity Moyo

Njabulo Mtshali calls on government to apply stringent measures to curb the high number of people obtaining driving licences without passing, or even sitting, their licence tests. He said these drivers cause road carnage, as they do not know anything about road signs and rules.
What type of a car do you drive? I drive a blue Citron C3. What special features does your car have? It has standard features such as ABS brakes, central locking, front electrical windows and passenger airbags. Would you allow anyone else to drive your car? Yes, my wife and my business partner. This is because the car is one of my assets and a business vehicle; when my car has mechanical problems, it hinders the progress of my business. What is your dream car? My dream car is an E63 Mercedes - it is an executive and family car. I love the car because it is fast, and it has four seats but it moves like it has two seats. Is there any gadget that you cannot leave
Page 11
home without when you are driving? Yes, a booster (mobile charger) for my cellphone - it saves me a lot of missed calls and emails because my battery will never die. Do you think women are bad drivers? It is not true; it is because there are more women than men and the ratio of accidents caused by women will be more. There are also men that are bad drivers - it is not about gender, but about the individual. Is there any suggestion that you think the government should implement to reduce road fatalities and make roads more userfriendly? The law enforcement agencies should be consistent in applying the law on the road. We know that they are human beings, but they have to be strict on drivers who are breaking the law to stop them causing accidents.
Teenage pregnancy is one of the main obstacles hindering the success of young women. Refiloe Ngwenya’s dreams of studying at the university were shattered when she fell pregnant; hence, she is advising the youth to abstain from sexual activities and to use contraceptives. Now a 21-year-old single mother from Nhlapho Section in Katlehong, she became pregnant during her first year at university. “I fell pregnant when l was 18 years old and I dropped out of school because I was supposed to take care of my child. It was not nice seeing my mates going to school while I was a mother at home,” said Ngwenya. She said young girls should take their parents’ advice seriously, especially when they warn them about men and relationships. Ngwenya said girls should also think about themselves and not be taken in by men’s empty promises. Too often they give men children to make them happy while forgetting about their own happiness, she says. She urges young women to make wise decisions and to consider their own needs. Her advice to girls is: “They must not make the same mistake I did; they should abstain, use condoms and other contraceptives. However, there are challenges with contraceptives because a person might get infected with HIV/Aids and STIs. I suggest abstinence is the best solution,” said Ngwenya. Despite the challenges of being a single mother, she is also studying Tourism Management part-time. Her dream is to become a flight attendant. Ngwenya enjoys travelling, visiting different places
DETERMINED: Refiloe Ngwenya says nothing can stop her from achieving her dreams. and working with people. Her hobbies are watching movies and listening to music.

Help soccer youngsters realize their dreams By Charity Moyo They are talented and passionate about becoming Bafana Bafana stars one day like Itumeleng Khune; however, the future of Tshotshomane Football Club members is bleak due to a lack of resources. The club, which is based in Holomisa in Mandela section in Katlehong, is appealing for sponsorship from business stakeholders. Although the u/17 division of the club has been participating in the Katlehong Football Association League, other divisions have not. Speaking to tame TIMES, Luvo Mafanya, the club coach said, “We are appealing for sponsorship in terms of transport, tournament fees, soccer boots and kit, balls and equipment. These challenges have resulted in demotivating these talented boys when they needed motivation and nurturing in their football talents. We had u/13 and u/15 divisions, but we ended up stopping them from participating in tournaments due to lack of sponsorship.” He said the club members are all from Holomisa squatter camp and the football keeps them busy and off the street during school holidays, weekends and after school hours. The club conducts their training at Ezingulubeni Grounds between Roodekop and Holomisa. Those who are interested in making the dreams of the budding football stars a reality by sponsoring them can contact Luvo Mafanya on 060 445 0913.

EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: Brilliant Khuzwayo lives up to his name during the MTN Cup final. The Moses Mabhida Stadium was packed to capacity during the MTN Cup final between Amakhosi and their archrivals Orlando Pirates. It was for the second time in a row that the two teams met in the final after Amakhosi lost in the recent Black Label Cup against Pirates held at FNB Stadium in Soweto. Chiefs displayed their intentions to win early in the first stanza of the match, when they furiously attacked the goal mouth of Pirates, leaving their opponents’ defence in confusion. Pirates almost took the lead in the 21st minute, but Brilliant Khuzwayo pulled off a fine save to keep out Oupa Manyisa’s close-range effort. Amakhosi’s persistence, however, was finally rewarded when their lanky defender Tefu Mashamaite nodded in the solitary goal of the match from a free kick in the 29th minute.

The first stanza of the match belonged to Amakhosi with their fierce determination and never-say-die attitude. Then the Buccaneers came out of the dressing room like a house on fire. Khuzwayo came to Chiefs’ rescue in the 52nd minute when he stopped a well taken strike from Kermit Erasmus from the edge of the area. In the second half, the Buccaneers won the midfield battle, but with little to show for their efforts as Brilliant Khuzwayo lived up to his name at his team’s goalposts and the Amakhosi team showed no signs of giving up on their one-goal lead. Brilliant Khuzwayo won the Man of the Match award, and thanked his coach Stuart Baxter for having faith in his ability in one of the biggest soccer matches in his football career.
