REIGER PARK BULLETIN
CRISIS CENTRE FUN DAY AND MODELLING SHOW On Saturday 7 March, the Community Crisis Centre held their fundraising fun-day at the Reiger Park Secondary School grounds. There were food stalls, jumping castles and even the Ekurhuleni Metro Police choir entertained the crowd with some melodious tunes, but the highlights of the day were definitely the Mr and Miss Reiger Park Teen modelling show and the dance competition. Both experienced and novice models took to the catwalk to strut their stuff. The categories ranged from babies to 21 years in the modelling competition. The dancers had the crowd screaming at the top of their voices, clapping along and moving their bodies as they enjoyed the talent these dancers displayed in their moves. The judges – Nicolette Jacobs, Clinton Solomon, Asanda Luwanca and Courtney Arendt – had a very difficult task in choosing the best from the different modelling categories, but at the end their decisions per category found favour with the crowd. The overall winner in the boys’ category was Evan Krause and Bodean Peters was crowned the overall women’s winner. TO THE LEFT: Kaylie Fourie, Lerice Lyle and Erin-Leigh Bester

PROMISE OF CHANGE FOR WINDMILL PARK
The Mount Zion Church in Windmill Park was the venue for what will hopefully be the beginning of the implementation plan for social change and upliftment in the area. The Department of Social Development visited Windmill Park on 4 March to put into motion the commitment given by the MEC of Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, a week before, when she held a meeting with residents to identify what the needs are in the community. Various challenges were identified - drug abuse, housing, back-yard dwelling, lack of recreational activities, title deeds, policing, etc. - and a commitment was made by the MEC that those departments responsible for the respective challenges raised will visit the area to compile and implement action plans, jointly with the community. The Department of Social Development was the first to visit the area on 4 March. They were there to decide on a process of training and assisting interested parties who
wish to register and operate NPO’s and NGO’s and apply for funding from Government. The department will also initiate a door-to-door campaign to determine the real extent of the needs in the area. Ms Shoki Tshabalala, Gauteng Social Development HOD, committed that the door-to-door campaign will start no later than 1 April 2015. These programs, which have been rolled out since 2014, are in line with Gauteng Premier David Makhura’s commitment to bring change to all communities. Teddy Gomba, communications official for the Department of Social Development, confirmed that the Premier has tasked all MEC’s to work within the communities. 10 March was set aside for a workshop for back-yard dwellers and 11 March to deal with the issue of title deeds for home owners. This is an on-going program throughout the Province.
BAIL FOR PROTESTORS In the case of the state vs. Andile Mdepha, Winston Alberts, Phillip Peterson and Shawn Stevens on 9 March 2015, the accused were granted bail of R 2000 each. The charges against the four include public violence, intimidation, crimen injuria and resisting arrest. They were arrested on 23 February whilst protesting in front of the Harambe Community Centre. According to witnesses, the four men gathered outside Haramabe, protesting, burning tyres and demanding that certain questions be answered around the Centre Manager and the operations at the Centre. It is alleged that after an exchange between the protestors and the Centre Manager, the Ekurhuleni Metro police services were called and the protestors were arrested. One of the local residents recorded the incident on her cell phone, which was subsequently grabbed from her by a police officer who claimed to have handed the cell phone in as evidence in this matter. She claims that when she attempted to lay a charge of theft at the Reiger Park Police station for her cell phone that was taken from her without permission; she was told that they cannot accept her case. According to Sergeant Phathela, spokesperson of the Reiger Park police station, the resident is entitled to lay a charge against the police officer in question, for grabbing her phone from her without permission. The court will decide whether it is a valid case or not. He said that she could return to the police station to exercise her right to lay a charge. The tame Times Reiger Park Bulletin will publish a comprehensive article on the matter in the next edition, including all relevant responses from those directly involved.
12th National CANSA Shavathon to restart cancer treatment when she was once again diagnosed with colon cancer. “It is a difficult journey” said Shireen, “but [Marion] has been my lifeline.” A group of women friends had their hair sprayed in celebration of their victory over cancer. One held up a banner reading: “It came, we fought it and survived!! Eliza-Marie and Bernice. It’s your turn!!!” Many others, young and old, had their hair shaved or sprayed - some in support of family members, others in support of the cause, and some celebrating their victory over cancer. The funds raised will be used to further the fight against cancer and provide support for Young Reiger Park resident supporting the shavaton cancer patients and their families.

“The CANSA Shavathon is [an event] in support of a very worthy cause, namely showing solidarity with those affected by cancer. Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors.” From 28 February to 6 March various shopping centres and malls, workplaces and other organisations accommodated CANSA in hosting their 12th national Shavahton. On Saturday 28 February, the tame Times visited the event at the East Rand Mall. We met a very emotional Marion, who had shaved off all her hair, and her mother Shireen. Shireen is a cancer survivor who recently had

In 2006 a Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) was opened at the Dawn Park Police Station. According to Sergeant Tema, the need for a VEC at the station was identified because of the influx of people who needed counselling and support after falling victim to crime. Prior to the establishment of the VEC office at the Dawn Park Police Station, the victims had to be transported to social workers and it was discovered that the additional travelling and delay in counselling would, at times, even further traumatise some victims. Mrs Malebo Constance Msiza volunteered her time and effort, as VEC Coordinator, to ensure the centre was kept well maintained and serving those in desperate need of its services. On Wednesday 3 March, the Cluster Commander Major General Mosikili, the Station
We too often find within society, mothers who are forced to fulfil the role of mother and father in the home. Mothers who have to hold down a day job and still go home at night to check homework, cook, clean and be a friend to her children – with absent fathers who in many cases do not even support the family financially. Due to the pressures of providing for their families, many single mothers hardly find time to think of their own career paths. And even if she does have career aspirations, often the family’s immediate needs are prioritised above her need to further her career. Gilda Swartz is a single mother of three children. For the past nine years she has been employed by a local funeral undertaker. Her goal was to earn money to support her children and herself. So she never had time to think about a career. Today, however, Gilda is the proud owner of her own funeral undertaker’s business. Gilda says that she would never have thought that she will ever run her own business, for her it was simply about working for an employer in order to provide for her children and herself. She, however,
thank her previous employer for the opportunity to earn a living. But in 2014, at the age of 56, the tide changed for Gilda. Her daughter, Luzaan, and son-in-law, Jerome, decided to join forces with their mother, who they believe is truly passionate about people and cares deeply for others, and went into a partnership with her. They started Maranatha Funeral Directors. According to Jerome, their mother’s passion for people is what motivated them to enter into a partnership with her. So it is this passion and caring spirit that Maranatha offers their clients. In the field of business they’ve ventured into, they often deal with very emotional people. Jerome believes that this is why his caring mother-in-law is ideal for such an environment, because she truly empathises with the bereaved families that they serve as their clients. Gilda, starting her own business – a business that also created employment for four other Reiger Park residents – at the age of 56, has not only overcome the challenges of being a single parent but she is also saying that ‘age is nothing but a number’.

Commander Lieutenant Colonel Tindeka, Community Police Forum Chairperson Mr Foster, the VEC Coordinator and other guests present had a chance to view the newly renovated mobile unit from where the VEC operates. SAB sponsored the renovations and also donated furniture, nappies for the young victims, toys and other items needed by the centre. Mrs Mamabolo, Corporate Affairs Specialist at SAB, said that their product was never intended to destroy lives, but to be used recreationally for relaxation and enjoyment. Sergeant Tema, spokesperson for the Dawn Park Police Station, thanked SAB for their contributions to the VEC. He also encouraged members of the public to support the centre and use its services, should the need arise.

Patience of Patient
Ek check die ander dag van daai mense wat so verniel was daar by die mall, net omdat hulle die mense voor hulle gevra het om te move. Die hele Boksburg was shocked! Hoe kan mense so erg wees? Hoe kan hulle daai mense so beskadig? Hayibo, daai mense moet Reiger Park toe kom. Maar voor die mense daar buite weer bang raak en begin praat van die kasie wat so rof is, moenie worry nie, ons like outsiders hier, jy kan even kom geld maak ook. All foreigners are welcome. Dit lyk hier is mense vining vir stadige dinge, and way too slow vir dinge wat moet gebeur. Soos -gaan ons dit nou regtig weer mention? – die councillor en sy community meetings. Ek dink die mense vang tips by the honourable Mr Zuma, hoe meer die EFF sê pay back the money, hoe minder luister hy.

Ja, Raymond Thomas was Reiger Park se Booker T. Jones. Wie ookal in die nabye omgewing was wanneer hy musiek vauit daai orrel se klawers getoor het, was gemesmeraais. Vra maar die mense van Stirtonville. Hulle was Big Time, gemesmeraais. Gepraat van Music. Hier’s so ‘n bietjie “ Reiger Park Geskiedenis “ vir oz jongmense. Gedurende hierdie era was daar genoeg Rock & Pop Bands in Reigies wat dit vir oz mense moontlik gemaak het om elke liewe aand van die week met ‘n verskillende band te skud. REIGER PARK WAT MUSIEK BETREF HET GE-ROCK ! Hier’s ‘n paar van die bands se name : DYNAMICS – INTRUDERS – TULIPS – DEBONAIRS – LES VALIANTS . . . en vandag ? . . . eat your heart out ! ek sê Raymond Thomas het ook vir Johnny Issel en mede atlete aangemoedig om ‘n span saam te stel om O/R Hoërskool met die InterHoërskool sportbyeenkoms op Newlands in Jo’burg te verteenwoordig vir provinsiale uitdunne en het ook ‘n besoek na die SA Simfonie Orkes opvoering in Jo’burg moontlik gemaak. So het hy jongmense gemotiveer om in ‘n tydperk waar daar baie min geleenthede vir anderkleuriges was, om hulle drome na te strewe. Meneer Raymond Thomas was ‘n opvoeder. . .
.miskien het hy indirek vir ons probeer vertel dat “ the sky is not the limit “? ‘n Laaitie bekend as Andrew Le Roux het hier in Galeview groot geword, in Daisystraat. Hy was nie net die eerste Coloured ambassadeur vanuit Reiger Park nie, but the first Ambassador of colour in South Africa and he refers to Raymond Thomas with great fondness as the most influencial teacher in matric who made a great impact on his life. Andrew Le Roux also mentions that highest symbol on his matric certificate was achieved in Geography. Ons het baie sulke wonderlik opvoerders, nie net in die onderwys nie maar ook binne die ander genres van opvoeding, Sondagskool, Sport, Masiet, Welsyn om maar net ‘n paar by naam te noem. Die belangrikste opvoeder is ten alle tye die Ouers. ‘n Ouer is en bly die kind se pottebakker. Ons sê hartlik DANKIE aan al die opvoeders wat ‘n passion het vir hulle beroep want hulle is die kwekers van Reiger Park se ouers van môre.

If food scraps are left lying around in the house or on the ground, particularly in warm, damp weather, it will rot and lots of germs will grow on it. If people, flies, cockroaches, rats or mice touch the rubbish they can get disease-causing germs on them. Anything they touch is then likely to get some of the germs. For example, germs will get onto people’s food if it comes into contact with flies, cockroaches, or mice that have germs on them.”

y Manika. drive when people can donate non-perishable food that is used to feed the less fortunate learners. Besides her passion for her learners, education and teaching, her drive comes from the feeling of powerlessness and pain she experiences when looking into the eyes of a hungry child. This drive led her, along with Handy, who she says constantly reminded her that they should do something to get the feeding scheme going, to investigate the possibility of a project which could supply needy children from various schools within Boksburg with a ready-made food pack. The project, however, needs financial backing and volunteers to assist with the setting up and running of it. She urges the communities of Boksburg to help in this urgent need to feed needy school-going children by donating to this programme and offering their time to run it. This feeding programme will not only benefit the learners from Voortrekker High School, but the aim is also to reach all schools within Boksburg. “We are the future, but we’re not acting like it. Why are we not acting like it? Is it because we don’t want to, or because at home we do not have food and pencils?” This is the question that drives Handy to support projects to help young people to succeed, and why he latches on to the compassion and passion of Mrs Maritz to bring real change for young people within all institutions of learning. For more information, or to assist or fund the food project, contact Voortrekker High School on 011 917 9586/7.

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity; it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” – Nelson Mandela Ndoji Handy Manika, a 16-year-old learner at Voortrekker High School and a Dawn Park resident, seems to understand the above quote by the late President Nelson Mandela very well. This is the realisation one comes to when you listen to what motivated him to help. Handy is involved in numerous projects, acting as ambassador for various NPOs and assisting one of his teachers, Mrs Maritz, to reach out and help shape a better future for many of his fellow learners and community members. Handy says that his interest in assisting his fellow countrymen almost came as an epiphany when he was in Grade 7 at Dawn Park Primary School. He was appointed as head boy at the school and in this role had to interact with fellow learners. Because of his leadership role within the school he became more aware of the fact that many learners were not doing their homework and teachers were shouting at these learners for not doing their homework, saying that they were lazy. In analysing the classroom situation, it raised the question for him: “What if the reason for the learner who does not do his/her homework is that s/he does not have a pencil or a pen, or even a book to do his/her homework in?” He realised that in order to eliminate excuses for not doing homework, every learner in the country should have the stationery required and then stationery would no longer be an excuse. This brought the then Grade 7 learner to the realisation that he should do something to make a difference by assisting in the cause for all learners to have not only stationery, but also food, so that they could remain focused at school. It was only a few years later, in 2013, that he could act on his vision to help the youth and his fellow learners. He joined an NPO which asked him to be their ambassador in the East Rand to feed hungry learners. He also became involved with a youth organisation in Dawn Park that reaches out to the youth of the community, helping them through motivational speaking, guidance and tutoring of the schoolgoing youth, at the local clinic. Mrs Maritz, one of Handy’s teachers at Voortrekker, is as passionate about serving the youth, especially learners, as Handy. Voortrekker High School has an annual food

Salmonella is one of the diseases that one can pick up from poor sanitation and debris. St Anthony’s Education Centre is at the receiving end of this poor service. It is a school with over 1000 people coming in and out of the Centre on a daily basis. We cannot afford to have a build-up of garbage at a centre like this. Not only is it a danger to the health of these people and employees of the centre, it also paints a very bad picture for visitors to the Centre. We have been waiting on Ekurhuleni for three weeks. He then decided to personally go into the depot on the 24th February 2015 and they promised they would come and collect the garbage by that very Wednesday February 25th. It is March 2nd and still no Ekurhuleni. Three weeks is a very long time for a company to be begging its council to come and remove hazardous waste.. There is a primary school right around the corner. There was a time when people dumped their garbage right next to the school fenceschool fence.. They had ample time to remove it before school started in January; instead; the children were exposed to that waste for about a month after the school had re-opened. The health of our children is at risk and this is a major problem. I do not know what the reason for their delay is. I am sure they have a few excuses, no valid ones I’m sure. I would not have written this article if it were not an emergency. It seems that the centre often has trouble with Ekurhuleni and its dustbins. I just hope that after this article they may take their jobs a little seriously. Describing what the bin looks like may sound exaggerated.

PRE-SCHOOL FUN DAY
13 March 2015
Reading Aloud Day
BY BIANCA MARE’
Khulani Pre-Primary Reiger Park held their Fun Day on Saturday, 7th March. The fun day was organised by the school’s Executive Committee which comprises of management, staff and parents. The funds raised will be utilised to upgrade the school’s security, purchase educational resources and restore the building. The Khulani cheerleaders, ages arranging from 5 to 6 years opened the day with an amazing dance performance. Following on was the group performance of the Grade RR and Grade R learners accompanied by the
teachers. The teachers displayed what team spirit is all about with their own dance item. The children practised diligently for a month and demonstrated their athletic abilities on the school’s back field. All the classes participated; babies from 18 to 24 months enjoyed the bean bag and hula hoop races. The toddlers from 2 years to 6 years sprinted down the field to the finish line in the bean bag, potato on spoon and hula hoop races. Still having a lot of energy they hopped away like frogs and pushed their friends like wheel-barrows in a roar of cheer. The grand
finale of the athletics event was the 4 course obstacle race; running with a bucket of water, picking up and balancing a bean bag on their heads, filling a bucket with sand and running down the field to the last obstacle, racing to the finish line on a motorbike. There was entertainment galore for young and old; namely jumping castles, face painting, play station, pool games, dance competitions and a variety of food stalls. A BIG thank you to all the sponsors who made the day possible!
This past week on March the 4th we celebrated Read Aloud Day. Last year 48 000 children participated in the Read Aloud event hosted by Nalibali Reading Project all over the country. South African artist, author, poet and story teller Gcina Mhlope and the Nalibali Reading Project annually run and participate in the Read Aloud Day by making the story of the day available in South Africa’s eleven official languages as well as making reading tips, reading clubs and reading resources accessible on their website. Gcina stated that this year their goal is not only to empower our kids through reading but to break last year’s record and also to create a reading culture in our country. I believe that reading is one of the most important tools one can use to empower oneself. Not only does it educate and inform, but it also enhances creative thinking skills. It is imperative that we equip ourselves as well as our future generations by developing good reading habits and skills. Not only will it help us gain knowledge and language skills but it will also enhance work ethic and concentration abilities which are very much needed in schools today. A famous proverb states: it is not good for a man to be without knowledge, for knowledge brings understanding, understanding wisdom, and he who heeds (pays attention) wisely will find good.
PLEA TO PARENTS/ADULTS EDUCATION IS KEY!
Addressing parents at a school meeting at Reiger Park Secondary school, the following was mentioned. The time has come to stop looking elsewhere for someone to grab the reins. It is YOUR turn! Why am I concerned? The answer is very simple. Children are at high risk and so is their education. It is no longer possible for our educators to make all the decisions. We have therefore started a networking partnership, called L.E.P. Partnership – (Learner, Educator and Parents) Parents your support is critical to learners and educators, no matter where the children attend school or crèche. Gone are the days for educators/teachers to do this alone,
they are facilitating learning, the learner has to walk the path with the love and support they need, parents are to motivate the learner to become someone great. Parents are urged to stay in contact with the child’s teacher all the time. Forming strong partnerships with learner/child, educators, parents, community and stakeholders will assist in combatting the different social issues in our community. Let us communicate and listen too. We strive for a common good, to make a positive difference. It is time that we become proactive and stop being reactive. When we fix the now, it will simplify the way for the future. The positive we do in this generation will pave the way for the
younger children, including the toddlers and we must take care of our children despite difficult situations and circumstances. We are not giving up on our children. Let us reach out to each other, together we can do it! “Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them and insists they become the best they can possible be.” Rita Pierson JULIE WHITECOMB 078 652 1647

The Right to Life Saturday 21 March is Human Rights Day, and 2015 marks 21 years of a new democratic dispensation in a country that is troubled by a disturbing past but has forged ahead to enact one of the most liberal constitutions in the entire world. We spoke reconciliation when the opposite was expected; blood was spilled and sacrifices were made by ordinary people to ensure we had equal treatment irrespective of race or gender, among other things. We indeed have a lot to celebrate, including the contributions made by the women and children of our soil, who kept things together when it was impossible to do so - they still deserve a lot of support from all sectors of our country. As we gear up to commemorate this iconic day, shivers go down my spine when I constantly read and hear about the plight of women losing their lives at the hands of their partners. There are high numbers of women killed by the men in their lives in fits of rage; these men at times turn to kill other family members
and then commit suicide. Why such carnage? What went wrong with men? Let’s take a moment and reflect on the rights of women versus domestic disputes that keep arising; let’s be reminded of the love that brought us together before committing crimes of passion. There’s a lot of good men in our country: speak up and help our fellow brothers that have broken souls; help them find themselves again so they can blossom in the way they were mean to be. Love is the inspiration that keeps us alive and all of us have it. Woman is God’s greatest gift to man - let us acknowledge her. This Human Rights Day, let’s remind ourselves of the right to life of women, that is just like the right to life that all of us have, and make a concerted effort to create better living conditions for our families and communities at large. URC AND CLINIC HELP COMMUNITY
CELEBRATE HEALTH MONTH By Tenasch Collis
For many years Reiger Park has taken a turn towards becoming a healthier community; with initiatives such as Reiger Park Active which has grown in numbers as it implements the more physical side of a healthy lifestyle. But there is more to a healthy lifestyle than working out and keeping fit. There’s also the importance of health awareness, which in turn prevents the dangers of terminal illnesses from spreading. Health Awareness is only strengthened through regular check-ups at the clinic, but not many people have the time to go to the clinic, our elderly usually do not have the strength to reach the clinic or people are just unaware of the services offered at the clinic. The United Reformed Church hosted the 2nd Annual Health Day on the 28th of February in celebration of February being Health Month. The aim of the initiative was to
inject health awareness into our community, as well as informing people of all the services the Reiger Park Clinic has to offer. Denise Pillay, a proud member of the United Reformed Church and one of the organisers of the event sat down with Tame Times to talk about the success of the event. “Myself, Precious George, as well as the other ladies of the church, including members of other denominations sat down and reflected on the success of our 1st Annual Health Day and we decided that we can take further steps in introducing a healthier lifestyle to Reiger Park.” “We included a more professional source of information, unlike last year when it was just members of our church who were employed in medicine and health. This year we brought in nurses from the Reiger Park Clinic featuring as guest speakers, providing the community with tips and tricks to ensure
a healthier lifestyle.” The ladies were treated to a delicious breakfast to start the day, thereafter receiving insightful information from representatives of the clinic regarding home remedies for many of our more elderly members of the community who cannot make the trip to the clinic; or citizens who spend every day working and cannot find the time to go to the clinic, even just for a regular checkup; identifying and curing minor ailments as well as the other services that the clinic offers such as immunizations and male circumcision. The clinic also provided blood tests identifying sugar levels, important tips for stress management; get physical with a 5km fun walk, and then everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon being pampered with manicures and pedicures, followed by a healthy lunch. “I would like to show my appreciation for the
Mrs Minnaar getting pampered at URC Reiger Park clinic that helped make our 2nd Health Day a roaring success; we cannot wait for next year.” Denise said excitedly The Clinic is open from Mondays-Fridays for the general public and Saturdays for chronic patients, mothers and emergencies.
