Ramaphosa says NO to XENOPHOBIA Justus Abrams

Cardboard posters reading “No to xenophobia” held up by anti-xenophobia protestors
Community of Ramaphosa showing their support for the campaign against xenophobia The recent incidents of xenophobic violence that were sparked in Isipingo Kwa Zulu Natal and spread rapidly across the country have brought back horrifying memories of the 2008 xenophobic attacks to the community of Ramaphosa and fear that similar attacks would be repeated. The police were on high alert and regular patrols were conducted in and around Ramaphosa, but also around Joe Slovo
informal settlement and the hostel close by. There were incidents of attempted looting and looting reported in Joe Slovo and Ramaphosa respectively, but calm was restored when the police responded swiftly and prevented the mobs from causing serious damage. Ramaphosa community expressed their dismay with xenophobia when a group of about 500 residents held a peace march on Saturday morning to say “no to xenophobia.”

Spokesperson for the Reiger Park police, Sergeant Phathela, confirmed that about 500 residents from Ramaphosa informal settlement and members of the Reiger Park SAPS held an awareness campaign. This was to stop the xenophobic attacks and to encourage people to live in peace with their neighbours. Members of the public were not prepared to stand idly by and watch a repeat of the 2008 violent attacks on foreign nationals, in which a Mozambican was brutally

attacked and killed. This kind of behaviour is not only inhumane, but also casts a bad light on the community across the country – and even the rest of the world. A woman who could not attend the peace march later expressed her satisfaction and support for the actions by her fellow community members who stepped out and said no to xenophobia. The situation remains calm and people are continuing with their daily lives as usual.

Local woman declared dead yet still alive
By Bianca Maré
Maria Klassen was horrified to learn that she had been declared as deceased, when she enquired about why she stopped receiving her pension as well as her foster child’s grant. She learnt that t she had been declared dead since 1999, the year that her sister had passed away. Maria states that she has been to Home Affairs relentlessly and was told that further investigations will be done but to date she has not had any feedback on the progress in this matter. However she has received a new smart card identity document which has left her even more confused. After countless, trips to SASSA and Home Affairs Maria is despondent, hopeless, penniless and still “dead.”
Maria has tried everything in her power to try and resolve this matter the local government systems have failed her and left her family in financial dire straits. She says that she has made appeals to most of the charity organizations in Reiger Park, she has even appealed to the Ward Councilor but no help has been received yet. This is a mother, who is now in the unfortunate position of not being able to provide for her family, but she keeps hoping and trusting in God to come through for her and her family. We appeal for any kind of assistance to the destitute Klaasen family, if you are able to assist please contact Maria Klassen on 084 835 4578.
ANC launch
24 April 2015
Ward 34 branch
The African National Congress (ANC) officially launched the Ward 34 (Paul Plaaitjies) branch on 29 March, at the Oosrand Secondary School.
Prayer of thanks
The Reiger Park Arise Women’s group were joined by female police officers, SAPS staff and CPF members from Tsakane, Brakpan, Boksburg and Boksburg North police stations, representing the SAPS Brakpan cluster to pray for the police and demonstrate their support for the work done
to uplift the community. They also visited some NGO’s around the immediate vicinity of Reiger Park police station to offer a prayer of hope and demonstrate their appreciation and support for the services that these Centres render to the community.
The women were excited about this joint venture and indicated that they hoped for it to grow so that women from the various communities represented could get to know one another and also create a broader chain of support. Pastor Francis, Reiger Park CPF
chairperson, also used this opportunity to invite women from the community to the launch of the Reiger Park Women’s Desk at the Christian Victory Tabernacle Christian Church (VTCC) at 10:00am on Tuesday 28 April.
Ekurhuleni Metro clamps down on illegal land use The City of Ekurhuleni is cracking the whip on illegal scrapyard owners and last week heaps of scrap metal were uncovered in Windmill Park in Boksburg. Officials from the City accompanied the Sheriff of the Court and the SAPS to deliver a court order issued by the South Gauteng High Court to a resident from whose premises a scrapyard is being operated. The City had previously served the owner a 30 days’ notice to cease all operations in contravention of the municipality’s town planning scheme and by-laws. The thriving scrapyard business - which deals in anything from metal car parts, rusted building materials, to metallic home appliances - has been a thorny issue in the community of Windmill Park, as it is viewed as a criminals’ den. Youngsters from the community steal goods from their neighbours and sell them to
the scrapyard so as to buy cheap drugs such as nyaope. “As the City we view municipal by-laws contravention as a serious offence; we therefore urge all residents and business owners to abide by these laws or they will face the full might of the law,” said Ekurhuleni acting spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala. The campaign to clamp down on municipal by-laws contraveners continues and next on the list to be served are residential premises that have been illegally refurbished as supermarkets in Delville, Germiston. According to the Ekurhuleni town planning scheme regulations, all landowners wishing to carry out extension of their premises must have approval from the municipal building inspectors. They are also advised to approach their nearby Customer Care Area offices to obtain information on the zoning processes.
“Not abiding by municipal building bylaws places owners at risk which could result in loss of life, loss of property and jail time,” concluded Ramashala.
CRACKING DOWN: Officials assigned by the South Gauteng High Court remove scrap metal from the Windmill Park home.
BY-LAWS BROKEN: The Windmill Park residential home-cumscrapyard the owner of which was served with a court order.

The month of April has been selected as Sexual Assault Awareness month. The Red my Lips international non-profit organization runs an annual global sexual violence awareness campaign, through which they encourage women to wear red lipstick to signify that they are standing up and speaking out against rape, molestation and sexual harassment, in unity! When the topic of sex crimes are addressed we usually focus on women, children and people with disabilities, but the new Sexual Offenses Act in South Africa has been amended to include males as well. Other amendments such as sexual exploitation, exposure to or the display of child pornography, the display of pornography to children and the creation of child pornography has also been added and is regarded as serious sexual crimes. The act also makes provisions relating to trafficking of people/children for sexual purposes. It further implemented a National Register of Sex Offenders in which records of all sex offenders will be filed and made accessible to all employers. The introduction of the sex offenders register aims to prohibit any sex offenders from being employed in environments where they could be in contact with any children or mentally disabled people. The Red Lips Organization has started an international revolution with the aim of empowering all victims to speak out against this vile, premeditated lust filled, sadistic crime against the most vulnerable members of society. We need to stand united against this crime and encourage victims to break the silence by speaking out with the confidence that the perpetrator will be convicted, registered on the National Sexual Offenders Register and knowing that by reporting the crime they are saving another possible victim from being attacked. Below are some guidelines of the steps and procedure that you should follow if you are molested or raped. W hat to do if you were raped 1. Get to a safe place as soon as possible. 2. Tell the first person you see that you feel you can trust what has happened to you. This may be difficult for you but it is very important because this person could be a witness to support you in court. If the person is a stranger ask them for their name and telephone number and write it down. 3. Do not wash yourself or throw away your clothes no matter how much you may want to. There might be hair, blood or semen on your body or clothes that can be used as evidence of the rape if you choose to report the matter to the police. 4. If you were drinking or under the influence of drugs at the time of the rape don’t let that stop you from reporting the matter or getting medical treatment – being intoxicated is not a crime but rape is. 5. If you are injured go straight to a hospital, community health centre or a doctor. 6. If you want to report the matter go to the police station nearest to where the rape took place. Do this as soon as you can or at least within three days so that there is a stronger chance of finding proof of the attack and of catching the suspected rapist. (If you don’t go within this time it is still possible to report the rape even after many years.) It is often useful to call a friend or family member to go with you and support you to do this. Keep the name and contact number of the police officer in charge of your case and your police case number. You are also entitled to a copy of the statement you make to the police. 7. If you fear retribution or intimidation from the rapist/s make sure that the police are aware of this and ask that the rapist/s be not allowed out on bail. 8. A doctor will examine every part of your body to find and collect samples of hair, blood or semen. This is called the forensic examination and it is part of the police investigation to gather medical evidence of the crime. 9. Ask for pamphlets or booklets on rape and the number of a local counseling service to give you further support and advice about the police matter, court case and any other effects of the rape on your life. 10. Make sure that you receive the following treatment from the doctor even if you do not wish to lay a charge: - The Morning After Pill (MAP) within 72 hours to prevent you falling pregnant if you are a woman. - An HIV test and antiretroviral treatment within 72 hours to prevent you getting HIV infection. You will have to go back for follow-up visits to the doctor, for further HIV tests and to take tablets every day for 28 days to do this effectively. - Antibiotics to prevent a sexually transmitted infection (STI) of another kind. Remember you still have a choice and can exercise your rights even though during the rape/abuse, choice was taken away from you. You can take back your power by speaking out and saving another victim. Let us end the cycle of pain, guilt, embarrassment, shame and Take Back Your Life! Let us wear red lips proudly, as one body displaying our support towards victims and exercising liberty to exclaim our freedom to speak out against Sex Crimes in SA.

Local Business man gives back to the community
Julle ken daai saying, “waar daar ‘n rokie is, is daar ‘n vuurtjie,” well… daar is rook. Dit maak ‘n mens se hart seer – genuine.
Tjo! Laziness het ook baie excuses…

Vincent Oliphant, CEO and local businessman of Total – Best trading as Unlimited Projects, believes that it is imperative to invest in the community and to extend support whenever possible. He acknowledged local businessman Martie Boysens from Boysens Builders as one of the key individuals who supported his business endeavor from the start. Martie Boysens recommended Unlimited Projects to his associates and suppliers which created business opportunities and additional projects to grow the business. Vincent firmly believes in corporate social responsibility and the development of the local people from the community. With the increased uncertainty and volatile economic climate, more people have less disposable income, making it difficult to meet the cost of living. One of the key objectives of the company is job creation by investing in local artisans and the unskilled community through a process of mentoring and coaching. Vincent is a ‘hands on employer who values interpersonal relationships with his employees and business associates. Growing up with a single parent and six siblings, Vincent experienced the hardships of poverty and the challenges associated with this environment. He attributes his strong Christian upbringing to his mother and the role she played in his life growing up. His desire is to positively influence his community by establishing projects that gives back to those affected by unemployment. The corporate social responsibility policy of the company states that ‘a company is defined by making a positive contribution to society through social upliftment and development’. One of the company’s projects ‘Color our Nation’ is aimed at a segment of the community who meet specific demographic requirements and focuses on members of the community who are unable to afford basic home improvements such as painting. The company has assisted several families in the community through this initiative. He has also invested in scholars and students to help propel them into a more enriching future. Vincent states that he is a living testimony of God’s grace from the beginning as a qualified boiler maker and then moving on to study electrical installation rules. The core business of the company is steel fabrication, industrial erecting, roof sheeting, civil, new and existing building development and renovations. Other services include solar PV plant construction. The company’s portfolio of clients includes major corporations such as, Frankwen Forge, Nampak, Tata and Meatworld. Two major projects included an auditorium for the Assembly of God in Shoshanguve, Basil Read Eskom Solar Plant Construction. Vincent was also one of the contractors at the new development of the East Rand Secondary School. Vincent continues to pursue his personal goals and still aspires to learn and grow into a sustainable business. The company’s values are based on sound principles of Innovation, Quality, Integrity and Service excellence. Some of the key objectives are to grow the business throughout Africa and diversify the business into other areas of interest. When asked about the secrets to success, Vincent says that the spiritual principles of tithing and sowing into the lives of others are what govern his life. He reaffirmed his faith in God and stated that God is his ultimate source in everything he needs. The youth in our community need role models who can make a difference in this community. These can be ordinary men and women, who fervently and diligently can utlise their gifts and talents to uplift our society. A famous proverb states ‘the soul of the lazy man desires and has nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.’

Sebenza – Hard at work Sports program for Reiger
Park initiated by the Department of Community Safety
Eighteen years ago a group of young men realised that working towards a goal of economic freedom means taking risks, working hard and forming partnerships, and they started Sebenza 5. When some members branched out to follow different business paths the name Sebenza 5 changed to Sebenza (which means work) and the company is now managed by two of the founders. Ola Murphy, one of the owners of the popular take- away on Leon Ferreira Street, says that ‘running one’s own business takes hard work and constant dedication. With the economic climate changing often, you are never sure what tomorrow has in store for your business, but closed to 20 years of business experience helps one to weather
the storms’ , he said. The Sebenza group concept of partnership outside family ties is the only way how township economies can grow and have wealth and job creation as returns. The Sebenza group also ventured into the transport business, but this unfortunately did not work out for them. This, however, did not dampen their spirit and dreams to grow the business and they hope to eventually turn Sebenza into a franchise. With more than 40 years of collective business experience, the two remaining Sebenza partners are determined to show that Reiger Park can deliver business partnerships that grow into big business. With the necessary support, they can achieve their dreams.

Rugby in Reiger Park
24 APRIL 2015 - PAGE 8
Under 21 teams battling it out on the Rugby field in Reiger Park By Collin Booysen EAST RAND UNITED RFC based in Reiger Park plan to enjoy a fruitful 2015 rugby season. The club adopted a semiprofessional approach. The club currently runs on two (2) legs, namely Management and Operations. The Management leg consists of the Executive Leadership with President (Vicky Lottering - Oom Lot); Chairperson (Desmond Adams); Vice-Chairperson (Shaun Johannes); Secretary (Marius De Vos);
Treasurer (Raymond Human) and Trustee (Vicky Lottering). The Operational Leg consists of Operational Manager (Werner Pretorius); Coaches (Derrick Sampson; Morne De Koker; Lienken Rabie; SG); Team Managers (Colin Booysen, Ursula Paledi). This new approach gave birth to a functional club and the results were visible during the warm-up games. At the end of last year the club was promoted to play in the higher Kestrel League against
teams like Nigel RFC, Benoni RFC, Kempton Park RFC; Elsburg RFC; Sasolburg RFC and VUT. These teams were part of this league for some years and everybody assumed that it would be tough for the new comer, East Rand United RFC to cope. The first game was against Elsburg RFC in Elsburg. They started their campaign on a high note by beating Elsburg 38 – 12. ERU scored six (6) tries and Elsburg RFC two (2). The most exciting part is the transformation
that is evident in the club it is a racially diverse rugby club. . At our opening match against Elsburg RFC 8 Coloured players; 5 White players and 2 African players were in the starting 15. The support was also awesome. Supporters travelled from Reiger Park to Elsburg to support ERU. We look forward to an exciting and entertaining 2015 rugby season.
Semi-final Kiddies Olympics winners from Delmore Park The Geppetto Kids Grade R class of 2015, from Delmore Park, participated in the Ekurhuleni Kiddies Olympics on the 18 March at the Reiger Park Stadium, where the team obtained second place overall.
