Drunk cop causes havoc

Tongues have been wagging nonstop in the Thokoza community ever since an allegedly drunk police officer lost control of the state vehicle he was driving and hit the gate and wall of two houses along Khumalo Street in Thokoza recently. According to Walter Luthuli, the resident whose wall was damaged by the police officer, he was in his house on Saturday night when he heard a loud bang, followed by the sounds of screaming and went outside to investigate, only to find a marked police vehicle from Zonkizizwe inside his yard. “It damaged the house wall and the gate of my neighbour. We managed to remove the officer, who was in a police uniform, from the car. He was totally drunk, smelling of alcohol and his legs were shaking. Community members were all over my yard and, when they realised that he was drunk, they wanted to beat him. I protected the officer and took him inside the house, where he started to vomit. It is alleged that before damaging my wall he bumped a car along Khumalo Street and lost control,” said Luthuli.

He reported the matter, he said, to the police, and officers from both Thokoza and Zonkizizwe police stations arrived on the scene. “I opened a case at Thokoza police station,” said Luthuli. “I need him to repair my wall. It is a disgrace that l had to make the officer clean where he vomited. The question is: did he attend the parade and, if he did, why did his commander allow him to work in such a drunken state?” said Luthuli. Sergeant Rufus Tema, Communications Officer for Zonkizizwe Police Station, said, “It is alleged that a member of Zonkizizwe Police Station was driving along MAYHEM: The police vehicle inside the resident’s yard after it hit his wall. * Photo Supplied Khumalo Street in Thokoza while on duty. The City of Ekurhuleni won an award for the cleanest municipality in Gauteng and was given the top prize of R300 000 at the Bontle ke Botho awards ceremony. The event was recently hosted by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the Lakes Hotel in Benoni. Ekurhuleni will now represent the Gauteng province at the Greenest Municipality competition which is run by the National Department of Environmental Affairs and is an award which the City won last year. Lebogang Maile, Gauteng MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, also awarded the City of Ekurhuleni a Certificate of Recognition for being the first Gauteng municipality to win the national Greenest Municipality Competition last year. “This campaign continues to facilitate community development and empowerment. On both formal and informal education fronts, learners in schools and community members participating in the project gained the necessary environmental skills, knowledge, attitude and values required to ensure that they participate meaningfully in addressing environmental issues that affect them now and in the future,” said Maile. Councillor Vuyelwa Mabena, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environmental Management in Ekurhuleni said, “This project has had a positive impact in many of our communities and schools. It is important that we come up with innovations that will ensure that it is sustained for the next 20 years.”

The City of Johannesburg came second in the competition. The winners of the 2014 Bontle ke Botho awards in the City of Ekurhuleni are as follows: for wards in new projects, ward 95 in Vosloorus took the second position and won R45 000. In the sustainable wards projects, ward 49 in Katlehong took the fourth position and won R15 000. For schools, Kathorus scooped all the awards for new projects while Abinala Primary School in Vosloorus won the first prize and was awarded R35 000. The second prize was won by Leratadima Primary School in Thokoza, which scooped R30 000. The third prize went to Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong, which won R25 000. The fourth prize was won by Umkhathizwe Primary School in Thokoza, which was awarded R20 000. The fifty award went to Thulisa Primary School in Katlehong, which won R15 000. Bontle Ke Botho is an initiative established by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2002. It is aimed at encouraging sustainable environmental practices in communities, schools, wards and at municipal level. Another objective of the programme is to promote environmental actions that take into consideration poverty alleviation and sustainable living practices. Projects are required to address one or more of the five themes which are: water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable agriculture and greening.

One suspect killed, another nabbed 12 suspects arrested for hijacking rice truck Thokoza police officers were recently called to deal with two trigger-happy suspects who were intimidating the residents of Khuthuza Hostel and generally causing havoc there. Residents reported the incident at the Thokoza Police Station and the men in blue were quick to arrive on the scene. Thokoza Police Station spokesperson, Godfrey Maditsi, said that on their arrival they saw one of the male suspects (29) violently trying to gain entry at the door of the hostel. “The complainant pointed at him and the suspect ran. We chased the suspect and finally arrested him within the hostel’s premises. We found the suspect in possession of a

gun,” explained Mditsi. He added that the arrested suspect’s friend witnessed his accomplice’s arrest and started opening fire on the arresting police officers. Maditsi said police retaliated by shooting the second suspect, who died at the crime scene. Police found the second suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. “The surviving suspect was charged with pointing a firearm at police officers. The remaining suspect will appear before the Magistrate at Palm Ridge Court,” concluded Maditsi.

Help our karate stars to shine

NEEDING SPONSORS: Young karate rising stars determined to make Gauteng proud in the Port Elizabeth karate tournament

Twenty two karate athletes from Gauteng Shorinkempo Karate Federation are desperate to lock horns with their counterparts in the karate tournament to be held in Port Elizabeth on 27 September. However, the dreams of these karate stars will not be realised if they do not obtain financial assistance or sponsorship to compete in the event. Speaking to tame TIMES, the senior instructor for Gauteng Shorinkempo Karate Federation, Thulani Sibisi, is optimistic about the Port Elizabeth Karate Style Tournament. “The Gauteng athletes who will be taking part in the tournament were recently crowned the overall winners in their respective divisions in the Shorinkempo International Tournament held at Thokoza Auditorium in May. A team of seven instructors who have already made arrangements to pay for their transport will accompany the athletes.” Each athlete is expected to pay a minimum of R1 200 for transport, and the event organisers are offering their guests accommodation for free. In total, they are expected to raise about R26 400 for all 22 athletes to take part in the upcoming competition. For more information about the Port Elizabeth Karate Style Tournament, contact Instructor Thulani Sibisi on: 083 599 5916 or deposit cash in the team’s Standard Bank savings account named “Kyokushin Karate” at: 425 703 533.

New sponsorship for Young Stars FC outfits Lebo Mosolodi lebo@tametimes.co.za Katlehong based business man Ephraim Mdaka sponsored the Young Stars Football Club under-17 team with a new blue and white soccer kit. Mdaka believes that the initiative is part of ploughing back into the local community after they supported his shops over the years. “This is the beginning of a good working relationship we have started together with the club. I would like to salute the team founders and management for helping to keep our local children away from drugs by motivating them to take part in sport. If it were not for soccer, they might be indulging in drugs or criminal activities. The sponsorship is one way of ploughing back into the community,” explained Mdaka. The team coach Wonder-boy Mtshali was excited about the sponsorship. “The sponsorship will really motivate my team because we had only two soccer outfits for three divisions namely, under-13, under-15 and under-17. That means two divisions have to hand over their outfits to the division without a kit after completing their matches. It is a relief that we have a new soccer kit and now all our divisions have their own soccer kits. We are also grateful that Mdaka donated food for the team when playing away games. We urge local business people to learn from this initiative,” concluded Mtshali.
