Hospital negligence leaves patient in wheelchair Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za

CRYING: Angelina Thoko Nhlapho blames hospital negligence for her pain and loss of income.

Alleged staff negligence at Natalspruit Hospital has left formerly fit 55-year-old Angelina Thoko Nhlapho from Thokoza in a wheelchair. On 2 February Nhlapho visited the hospital and was admitted for a gallstone operation. The operation was successful and she had a catheter (tube and pocket) put in. She alleges that on 7 February the doctor told her that she was about to be discharged and that the nurse would remove her stitches that day, but leave the removal of the catheter for the following Thursday. “The nurse came to remove the stitches,” she said, “but when she was removing the catheter I told her that the doctor had ordered her not to, but she did not listen. She stated that I must not take the catheter with me to the township or it would rot. I even asked her whether it was not going to give me problems and she denied this. I was discharged without a catheter, and when I arrived home l had some excruciating pains for four days. I was taken to the hospital by my husband; on my arrival the doctor questioned me about the whereabouts of the catheter. I explained everything to the doctor and he asked me whether l was able to identify the nurse who removed it and I agreed. The doctor said my situation is complicated and transferred me to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital where I was also admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for eight days,” said Nhlapho. She added that she also spent a few weeks at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and, when she was discharged, was instructed to go back to Natalspruit

for further treatment. At this stage she thought that her first bout of suffering was all she would have to endure, but unfortunately it was not. On 27 May she went to Natalspruit Hospital to drain the blood on her right thigh; because, after the doctor had given her an injection, her leg had become swollen and painful, and black spots had covered her thigh. “I showed the doctor the sudden changes to my leg,” said Nhlapo, “and he said he would give me treatment, but he transferred me to another ward without giving me treatment as initially promised. I was unable to walk but they discharged me. Even now l cannot walk and I am unable to go to work. I am a breadwinner in my family, taking care of my five grandchildren. My husband is also unable to go to his part-time work as he is looking after me,” explained the desperate Nhlapho. Responding to the matter, Prince Hamnca, Head of Communications for the Gauteng Department of Health said, “Upon receiving this complaint, the hospital has instituted an investigation into the allegations made by Angelina Thoko Nhlapho and once completed, the findings will be communicated to the patient. If the investigation points to negligence by any health-worker, necessary disciplinary procedures will be followed. The Department also encourages Natalspruit Hospital users to report any complaints and concerns regarding the institution to the hospital’s Quality Assurance Unit and all complaints/concerns received will be thoroughly investigated.”

Maphumphum ready to fly high lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za

Phumzile “Maphumphum” Mlangeni is steadily climbing the ladder to stardom, earning respect both from the community and her colleagues within the radio broadcasting industry. Mlangeni’s passion to entertain motivated her to join leading Ekurhuleni community radio station, Kasie FM in 2008. She did not allow circumstances to be a stumbling block in the way of her dream of being a radio personality. “I underwent an intensive six weeks training at the radio during the graveyard shift. I got my first break in 2008 when the station management team offered me the opportunity of reading funeral announcements between 7:30pm and 8:00pm on Thursdays,” explained Mlangeni. As if that were not enough, she got a second golden opportunity at the radio station to present Ezakwantu Traditional Music on Saturdays held between 9am and 12pm. A third chance came in 2010, when she was asked to present Asimdumise Gospel Show which

was broadcast on Sundays between 6am and 9pm. Maphumphum’s popularity in Kasie FM soared and paved the way for her nomination for several broadcasting awards. “I was nominated twice in the South African Traditional Music Awards and twice in the South African Broadcasting Corporation Crown Gospel Awards. Last year I was also nominated in the Annual Zion Music Awards. Despite several nominations I got lately, it was unfortunate that I did not win any award yet. However, I am confident that within a matter of time I will win one of the awards,” said Maphumphum.

Colleen Naicker, financial manager for Cliffy’s Hyper Land, recently partnered with three other businesses to fill the empty stomaches of Mpilisweni residents in Thokoza. Naicker, a Good Samaritan who believes in giving back to underprivileged people in the community, initiated the event. She partnered Cliffy’s Hyper Land with three organisations which donated food: Wrap n Bag, Donovan Fruit and Veg, and Delfi Zoom. A full balanced meal for the residents was prepared which included beef, chicken, mince, salads, cakes, sweets, snacks and juice. “The response was very good, the rain did not stop people to come and queue for the meal. Residents were amazed that we were giving abundantly from our hearts. It is my desire and God’s will to feed the needy people in our society,” said Naicker. Phindile Skhosana, a member of the community, said, “We are happy and appreciate their noble initiative for the community. They should continue with what they are doing and God will bless them.”

Four representatives for ABSA Premier League in Africa

Community invited to Sports Imbizo Lebo Mosolodi

Lebo Mosolodi

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za

Jerry “Rhee” Skhosana scored the winning goal that won the Soweto team its African Championship League trophy. The ranking of South African football in the Africa club competitions is steadily rising after the Confederation of African Football (Caf) rated the domestic league among the top 12 in the continent. This gave four domestic football teams the opportunity to represent South Africa in both the Caf Orange Championship League and the Caf Orange Confederation Cup. The ABSA Premier Soccer League 20132014 champions Mamelodi Sundowns and last season’s runner up, Amakhosi,

will together represent Mzansi in the Championship League. As if that were not enough, the 2013-2014 Nedbank champions Orlando Pirates will be accompanied by BIDVest Wits in their crusade to win the Caf Confederation Cup. It is worth recalling that 13 countries have the right to send two representatives for each competition, following the results of the previous competition and each year’s classification during the finals. The 13 countries that sent four clubs this year (two

in the Orange Champions League and two in the Orange Confederations Cup) were the following: South Africa, Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, DR Congo, Sudan, Tunisia and Zimbabwe. ABSA PSL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Brand de Villiers was thrilled to learn that finally Africa’s richest football league will have four teams in both competitions instead of two, as has been the case in the past. He urged local teams to cherish this golden opportunity of showcasing their skills globally. The power is in the hands of the other two teams namely, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, to emulate or surpass the feat of Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs by winning either of the two cups. With the depth and talent of players that coach Pitso Mosimane has in his team, winning the Championship League is mission possible for the Pretoria based outfit.

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The residents of Ward 101 in Tsietsi Extension Six are invited to a Sports Imbizo to be held on 26 July at the Maplankeni. Speaking to tame TIMES, South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Ward 101 representative, Lucky-boy Mofokeng, said that there are talented youngsters in their ward, but that a lack of investment, a shortage of sponsorship and either the shortage of sports facilities or their dilapidated state hinders sports development in the township. “It is because of the above-mentioned facts that we decided to partner with all relevant stakeholders in sport, including the Councillor of our ward. Various sporting codes - and parents - are invited to take part in the coming imbizo. We will be talking about sports and seeking ways to improve it in our ward. We hope that we will get alternatives that will improve sports in our township,” concluded Mofokeng.
