Mayor addresses Thokoza residents Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za Numerous reports of prostitution, crime and underdevelopment in Ward 52 in Thokoza persuaded the Mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mondli Gungubele, to address the residents of the area at the Thokoza Auditorium recently. The community had demanded that the ward councillor be removed due to poor service delivery as he no longer resides in the area. They also complained of prostitutes and illegal shebeens operating around the hostels and demanded individual installation of electricity prepayment meters and the reconstruction of Serema Street in Mpilisweni. Speaking to tame TIMES, the Chief of one of the hostels, Zacheus Sibiya, said, “We are tired of empty promises from the municipality regarding the development of the hostels. The hostel is a health hazard - the toilets are non-functional, there are water leakages and windows are broken; it is not suitable for human habitation. We are appealing for the municipality not to destroy the entire hostel when reconstruction starts but to demolish part of it. That would provide alternative

accommodation to the hostel-dwellers while building the new improved structures. We need hostel transformation and hostel residents should benefit as well. Gungubele said that as part of the redevelopment of the Thokoza hostels, the socio-economic survey had been completed. Only the fire rational design approvals, the granting of the demolition permit by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) and the acquisition of temporary residential dwellings with complementary temporary wet services units by province are still outstanding. He stated that a number of activities are planned to be undertaken simultaneously to fast-track the delivery of services and include the sourcing of the temporary residential units while the demolition permit is being acquired and community facilitation is started. Gungubele said the Department of Health and Social Development and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department have been requested to manage matters relating to the social ills and deviant behaviour within the hostels. The estimated budget allocated for the 2014\2015 financial year to fund the

installation services for phase one (300 units) is R65 700 000.00 In Thintwa section the budget allocated for the 2014\2015 financial year for the construction of 27 houses is R3 535 569.00. In terms of electricity challenges in Thokoza, the installation of protective structures where they had not been installed is complete as well as the repair of protective structures that were vandalised. Ensuring that each house has its own cable is 50% complete

and the installation of prepayment meters, in bypassed mode, in the protective structures for every house is to commence on August 2014.

Bikers help underprivileged children Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za

Action Riders Motor Cycle Club recently hosted a charity event for the underprivileged children of Kathorus Child and Family Organisation (KCFO) based in Thokoza. They also invited bikers from Port Elizabeth, Venda, Witbank, Soweto and Kathorus to come to the event. The bikers of the Action Riders Motor Cycle Club and those they invited from further afield all donated clothes, shoes, hats, food and toiletries to the KCFO. They also brought entertainment for the children, including a DJ, sound system and jumping castles. The children had an opportunity to ride bikes and expensive Mini Coopers. Mantwa Mnisi, President of Action Riders Motor Cycle Club said, “The initiative is our social event aimed at giving back to the community. We donated clothes, shoes, hats and food. The event was also to show underprivileged children that we love and care for them.”

Deborah Mabelane, social worker at Kathorus Child and Family Organisation (KCFO) said, “We are grateful for the donations, our children were in need of the entertainment and they finally got it. We really appreciate the love and care showed by the bikers.”

We welcome you all to our month-end edition for June 2014. It has been a busy month with many activities: the celebration of Youth Month, Father’s Day and the World Cup. We are in the middle of the World Cup, but this is not uplifting news for African football fans. It seems like our African representatives are losing the tournament. In our sports news section, we have a World Cup overview piece on the performance of the African teams. We also have a sad news-story about Sonqoba Primary School in Katlehong losing the Danone provincial finals. To celebrate Father’s Day, Boxer Stores is giving a R250 voucher to the community. Why not enter and tell us why you have the best Dad in the world? You will find more information on the competition in the newspaper. We also have a section for divas and one for motoring, so if you are interested in featuring yourself or your car in the newspaper, please do not hesitate to call or email our editorial team. It is freezing outside and it is time for you to enjoy a cup of hot coffee while reading your favourite newspaper, tame TIMES.

Cheers for now. Charity Moyo

Relatives urged to collect deceased patients at Natalspruit Natalspruit Hospital management is appealing to the public to collect the bodies of their relatives who have died while receiving care at the institution. Some of these patients died a month ago, but have still not been collected for a dignified burial. The hospital management has also noticed that some community members vanish without a trace when they realise that their relatives are about to die and simply dump them at the institution. After visiting the addresses written on the records of such patients on their day of admission to the hospital, management has discovered that they are often incorrect. To make arrangements to collect your loved ones before they have a paupers’ burial, please call the hospital mortuary on 011 035 2300 and ask for Masesi Mahlangu. Thokoza crime success Thokoza Police Station officers are committed to tackling crime within their jurisdiction in a bid to make the community safe. Station spokesman Captain Godfrey Maditsi told tame TIMES that a male suspect was arrested for raping a female he attacked while she was walking pass the Thokoza cemetery. He warned residents to refrain from walking pass the cemetery from Thokoza to Palm Ridge, stating that criminals are hiding in certain crime hot spots within the cemetery. “We have arrested four suspects for possession of drugs and they will appear in the Magistrate’s Court soon. Another three suspects were arrested for assault, two other suspects were arrested for rape and one was arrested for shoplifting,” said Maditsi. Thokoza police officers have promised to intensify all measures put in place to make their jurisdiction a safer place to stay. However, they need the community to support them in their bid to save lives.

ATM fraud and robbery suspect apprehended A recent roadside check conducted in Combrink Street near Nooderlig School yielded a 30-yearold suspect wanted for ATM fraud and robbery. The suspect was driving a vehicle which had been reported to have been used by persons defrauding ATM-users in Ekurhuleni. The maroon Opel Corsa he was driving was found to have an expired license disc. The driver lied that he had already renewed the license but had forgotten to display it

After running the registration of the vehicle through the system, however, the Metro Police officer discovered that the license had not been renewed and that a Thokoza police station case number was recorded against the vehicle for ATM fraud and robbery. The suspect was taken to Crystal Park Police Station, where arrangements were made with the Thokoza detectives to pick him up to answer to the charges recorded against the vehicle registration number.

Youngsters who are pursuing a career at an institution of higher learning should know that there are certain careers that are not driven by money. Such careers are a calling to the people practising them, and they need to be pursued in order to make the society we live in more inclusive and caring. Speaking to tame TIMES, auxiliary social worker Lerato Sekhoto (29) said she had been drawn into her career because she loves to help people in need. “My career needs a person who is patient and dedicated about his or her work, hence we strive to make a difference within the community we are servicing. It gives me pleasure when a client gets help because I know that I have made a difference. ” She said it pains her when a client leaves their office without being helped. Sekhoto said it is still most unfortunate that some people visit social workers’ offices to ask for identity documents. “It is vital that they know that our offices

No work, no future for 36% of SA youth Opinion: By Palesa

Almost 3 million South Africans between the ages of 18 and 24 are not in employment, education or training. One-third of our young men are jobless and almost 40% of our young women are unemployed. And the situation is becoming worse, not better. Youth unemployment - according to the official figures from Statistics South Africa - was 32,7% in 2008, but is now 36,1%. This means that over a third of South Africans between the ages of 15 and 34 have no income, no careers and very little, if any, work experience. Their lives are on hold. Unless they are fortunate enough to find the financial sponsorship to do so, they cannot marry, buy houses or study. They also cannot pay tax or save for retirement. Many manage to subsist by sharing a grandmother’s pension or a child’s social grant. As a result, South Africa has a huge and dangerous imbalance between tax-

consumers and tax-payers. We have about 16 million recipients of social grants but only about 5 million payers of tax. This is not financially sustainable, especially as the current population ages and today’s taxpayers retire from their jobs and become pensioners. The situation is also not socially sustainable, especially as the numbers of long-term unemployed youth grow. According to the latest figures released by the StatisticianGeneral, almost half the youth in Free State are out of work and nearly two-thirds of 20- to 24-year-olds are in long-term unemployment. These are people with all the hope, energy and ambition of youth but no future. When neighbours return from work, they are still sitting on their parents’ sofas; while others drive past in cars, they are wearing holes in dusty street corners. Theirs is a twilight existence, one that makes them feel marginalized, unworthy and unwanted.

The tragedy is that government has been vocal about promising jobs since 2004, raising hopes and aspirations but delivering little apart from an increase in civil service jobs and short-term Expanded Public Works Programme job opportunities that burden the tax-payer. South Africa has a serious shortage of skills but an education system that is one of the worst in the world, especially in job-friendly subjects like mathematics and science. Most of our artisans are fifty-something, but we currently produce only 3000 a year in place of the 30 000 previously produced every year under the old apprentice system. Still, government – and even some members of the opposition – promise to create jobs even though it is universally acknowledged by economists that governments are unable to increase permanent, sustainable jobs and can do no more than to create a businessfriendly environment for the private sector to do so.

Makhomisani revealed that his parents could not afford to buy him school shoes while growing up. “We made it our mission that other learners should not endure the same pain I experienced while growing up. During winter, learners from impoverished backgrounds absconded classes and some could not concentrate because they walked barefoot to school,” said Makhomisani. He added that they have embarked on the school shoes drive in various parts of Gauteng. They have handed out a total of 160 school shoes provincially and promise to extend the project countrywide soon. Speaking to tame TIMES, school teacher Albert Mudau said the school was grateful for the noble gesture. “The initiative will help the needy learners of our school and ease pressure faced by parents. Other businesses should follow the example set by Thabong Good Health Pharmacy and start ploughing back into the community. This is the beginning of a great partnership between our school and the pharmacy. Our school management and the principal are all supporting this programme.” One of the project beneficiaries, Happiness Lushaba, is excited about her gift of school shoes. “I am optimistic that the new school shoes will change my life and boost my confidence amongst my peers. Prior to the intervention of the project, I Villa Liza Secondary School learners show off their new school shoes.

Queen of Soul depressed by sudden loss of Zondi Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The work of the recently deceased Metro FM DJ Eddie “King of Soul” Zondi left an indelible mark on the broadcasting career of Katlehong based radio presenter, Zamazulu “Queen of Soul” Mncwango. Mncwango was inspired by the late DJ Zondi and gained valuable knowledge while listening to his show, which touched many radio listeners countrywide. Kasie FM presenter Mncwango currently presents the Kasie to Kasie programme. She became known through the first show that she presented on the radio station, which was called Morning Glory. “Morning Glory was broadcast from 3 pm to 6 pm on weekends. After a while, I was given a new slot called Kasie to Kasie. It is a midweek programme running from 12 noon to 3 pm. The show is about giving aspiring businesspeople an opportunity to market their businesses. We play a mixture of Soul, Kwaito, House, Pop, Afro Soul and other music genres,” explained the “Queen of Soul.” Mncwango regretted not having the opportunity to play music set with Zondi. She did, however, manage to play music set with the legendary Thabo Mokwele and Wilson B. Nkosi. Mncwango started her broadcasting career at Durban with Nanda FM in 2009, while studying for a diploma in fashion designing. She worked at the station for nine months and then relocated to Katlehong where she joined Kasie FM in August 2012.

Africa on a losing streak in Brazil

Lebo Mosolodi

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za African teams are on a losing streak in Brazil - our continent’s representatives have disappointed the fans by losing most of their opening matches in the World Cup. There is a need for them to uplift their standard of play for them to be taken seriously by their competitors. However, African teams continue to disappoint so far, forgetting that this tournament is the ultimate football barometer that promotes boys to men or demotes men to boys. The latter has recently been the case with the quick exit of current champions Spain; their status will soon be relegated after the completion of the World Cup. The tournament is also a measuring rod for football development in all nations. The mediocre performance of African teams playing in the World Cup does not help either – the Ivory Coast team is the only one from the continent which hoisted the continent’s flag high during the opening stages of the tournament by salvaging a 1-0 victory against Japan. However, their gutsy performance was brought to a temporary halt by the star-studded Colombian team when they were walloped 2-1 in their stream second game. Ivory Coast was knock out of the tournament by Greece 2-1.The least said about the oncefeared Indomitable Lions of Cameroon also, the better.
