HELPING OUT: ABI employees making the benches for the Centre
Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI) employees from the company’s Employee Volunteerism programme dedicated time and effort to revamp the Thokoza Youth Centre as part of celebrating Women’s Month. The Thokoza Progressive Youth group, which is based at the Thokoza Youth Centre, benefited as ABI employees branded the place with their name, painted the walls, replaced broken windows and doors, painted the tennis court, made benches

and prepared a vegetable garden. They also enhanced the centre’s infrastructure in order for the community to gain improved access to all programs on offer. William Mahlasela, corporate affairs specialist for ABI Gauteng region said, “We are doing business in Thokoza and surroundings townships; so, as a responsible corporate, we are ploughing back into the community. For us to be successful, we need to build sustainable communities. We have partnered with Thokoza Progressive Youth and we are impressed by their project.”
Mduduzi Tshabalala, Chief Executive Officer of Thokoza Progressive Youth, said, “We are most delighted with the branding of the organization as it will give us exposure. They have also revamped the infrastructure at the centre and the sporting facilities. The vegetable garden will assist in the feeding scheme and we really appreciate the support and donations from ABI. They should continue with their programme of developing youth initiatives.”

We have now come to the end of the celebration of phenomenonal women in their month of August. It was really quite an interesting month as we have seen many talented ladies showing off their capabilities and achievements. We urge women to be strong and to continue doing amazing work and making a difference in their communities. Read a story this fortnight about Mpho Mazamane, who has survived both rape and abuse and is now celebrating 20 years living with HIV. With summer and spring knocking on our doors, people are very excited about the new fashion trends for this season. To learn more about the latest fashions, come to the inaugural Ekurhuleni Street Fashion Show, which will make its debut on 5 October at Hurricanes in Katlehong.

The retail and wholesale learnership programme launched recently at Eden Park Hall has brought some relief to unemployed township youth. The initiative is a brainchild of SETA Central College in conjunction with Eden Park Crime Prevention Youth Desk (EPCPYD) and Batho Pele Social Development Youth Organisation (BPSDYO). BPSDYO advice officer Poloko Felbrook said that their learnership programme aimed at targeting unemployed youth ranging from 18 to 35 years. “Our objective is to recruit unemployed matriculants in a bid to give them useful skills. Learners will undergo an initial six months’ training phase and then an additional six months’ in-service training. All the recruits will be paid a minimum of R2000 per month during the duration of their training and in-service training,” explained Felbrook. The training is free and 500 unemployed youth stand to benefit from the programme in the Kathorus area. Meanwhile, BPSDYO will offer bursaries for a computer course for a twomonth period and interested learners should pay R100 for administration purposes. For BPSDYO advice officer Poloko more information about the programme, please Felbrook urges youth to enrol for the contact Poloko Felbrook on: 082 047 4406. learnership programme.

A school environment that is conducive to learning is crucial for the progress of learners and so Transvaal Heavy Transport Company, which is based in Alrode, decided to replace the shack which housed the Grade Rs of Tshwarangano Primary School with a state-of-the-art classroom made of bricks and mortar. For the last three years, Grade R learners had nothing but a small shack for lessons. Overcrowding and other factors made for an environment that was not at all appropriate for learning or good for the children’s health. During winter, the shack was very cold and in summer it was very hot. Learners and educators were consequently most delighted, and very thankful to the company, for the amazing donation of a new classroom. Vision 5 Funerals also partnered with Sikhumbuzo Memorial Tombstones to donate a plaque for the classroom. Speaking to tame TIMES, Josephina Mmathoto Tlou, the principal of Tshwarangano Primary School said, “The shack was not a favourable class room for learning. The newly built classroom is big in size, with ventilation and a complete structure. We are thankful for the donations and we promise to produce wonders.” Sampie Swanepoel, Managing Director of Transvaal Heavy Transport Company said, “We are thankful for God’s blessings that have

made it possible for us to share our blessings with the school. Learners are the future of the country and they cannot be taught in a shack - they need a proper classroom. It was amazing to see the learners appreciating the gift of a new classroom.” Joe Nkuna, director of Vision 5 Funerals, said the plaque will also be a reminder to learners about the donation of the classroom.

Why demolish the old Natalspruit Hospital?
Tshidi Hlahane, a concerned resident, writes: The MEC and other leaders should really reconsider demolishing the Natalspruit Hospital based on the following: 1. Which stakeholders were consulted about the demolition and on what basis did they agree to the decision to demolish the Natalspruit Hospital? 2. Is there any form of transport arrangement for the unemployed families of sick patients so that they can travel to see them at the new hospital? 3. There are many home-based care organisations that operate under unhealthy, if not poor, environments. Could the old building not be used by such organisations? MINI and iSchoolAfrica Roadshow to educate community on legal matters invest in education DJ Fresh and DJ Euphonik, along with MINI and iSchoolAfrica representatives, visited Buhlebuzile Secondary School in Thokoza to encourage learners to embrace creative thinking in preparation for careers in the field of arts.
Sijabulile Secondary School in Katlehong was also invited to be part of the event. MINI and iSchoolAfrica continue to sponsor the three top achievers from both schools. Students in the programme are constantly exposed to a world of design, creative thinking and reporting that allows them to use their own intellect through the use of state-of-the-art Apple hardware and software. Brian Mduduzi Afrika, former student of Buhlebuzile Secondary School and member of the iSchoolAfrica press team, is currently studying at the Tshwane University of Technology. The MINI and iSchoolAfrica project has offered him an opportunity upon completion of his studies to do an internship in the United Kingdom for a year. The highly admired DJs spoke briefly about their history and personal career experiences, challenging students to believe in their own creative ideas. The famous DJ duo demonstrated MINI and
iSchoolAfrica’s commitment to inspire future leaders in the fields of arts, design, communications, media and journalism. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with your ideas, even if they sound a little crazy. If I followed the career path that was expected of me, I would be sitting behind a desk, very unhappy. I chose to be different. I chose to stand out,” said DJ Euphonik. DJ Fresh added, “Find what you love and do it so well that someone will want to pay you for it. You will never work a day in your life if you wholeheartedly love what you do.” Kabelo Rabotho, General Manager of MINI South Africa said, “Creativity and design are the foundation of the MINI brand, not only in our product design, but also in our unique and exciting approach to everything we do. We are an inventive, bold and cosmopolitan brand and for this reason we are a well suited partner for iSchoolAfrica to expand the learners’ worlds beyond just the use of a computer. The future is bright for these learners and we are determined to make it a future filled with opportunity, reward and, of course, excitement.”

Use paper to reduce your carbon footprint. Tip-offs from members of the community led to the recovery of two stolen silver Toyotas that were found in the garage of a house in Palm Ridge. Ekurhuleni Metro Police Community Liaison Unit members acted swiftly after receiving the information. “The vehicles were positively identified as stolen – the Corolla was stolen early this month in Primrose and the Yaris was stolen in July in Bedfordview. The ignitions of both cars were tampered with and their dashboards were damaged”, said Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago. EMPD officers traced the registered owner of the house, who claimed that he sold the house earlier this year. “The Metro Police officers are conducting an in-depth investigation with the objective of locating the rightful owner. The owner will be expected to explain what two stolen vehicles were idoing in his garage,” said Kgasago. The recovered vehicles were booked in at SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound.

Chiefs to clash with Pirates Lebo Mosolodi
lebo@tametimes.co.za
The MTN Top 8 final between Amakhosi and Amabhakabhaka is expected to be an interesting affair. The Soweto Derby Dream Cup final MTN Top Eight between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is set to take place on 20 September at a venue that has yet to be confirmed. Pirates and Chiefs showed little respect for other teams when they walloped their opponents with an avalanche of goals to book their place in the final. The Sea Robbers, as Pirates are affectionately called by their supporters, reached this point after walloping BidWits 3-1 at Orlando Stadium. Orlando Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus scored the opening goal, which was cancelled by Wits forward Getaneh Kebedi. Lehlohonolo Majoro came from the bench and scored two spectacular goals to make it 3-1 in favour of Orlando Pirates. Then the Bucs marched to
the final on a 5-1 aggregate score. Amakhosi continued their winning streak at the expense of Platinum Stars Football Club. George Maluleka scored a free kick goal spectacular to open a goal feast for the Naturena based team. Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane tapped in a second goal after getting an immaculate cross from his teammate Tsepo Masilela. Katleho “Killer” Mphela put the final nail in the Dikwena’s coffin when he scored the third goal towards the end of the second half. The final score was 3-0 and the aggregate score was 5-0 in favour of Chiefs. The Premier Soccer League has advised soccer fanatics to buy their tickets in good time as both teams command huge fan bases. This is the first cup final in the new season between South Africa’s two main football powerhouses.
Karate tourney leaves positive impression Lebo Mosolodi
lebo@tametimes.co.za
The turnout at the National Len Barnes Memorial Karate Tournament recently held at Thokoza Auditorium surprised the event organisers, with the numbers of spectators exceeding their wildest expectations. Despite some minor obstacles experienced, the junior karate athletes immediately took centre stage to battle it out for the ultimate crowns of their respective divisions. Speaking to tame TIMES, event organiser Shihan Collen Sedoaba said that they were surprised by the support and the numerous divisions which took part in the tournament on the day. “The event was the 12th edition of the National Barnes Memorial Karate Tournament and the first to be held in Gauteng. Karate athletes from all South Africa’s provinces, as well as Zimbabwe and Congo DRC, converged on Thokoza. We had over 120 karate athletes taking part in the tournament on the day,” explained Shihan Sedoaba. Noluthando Sethubeni from Alafang Dojo in Katlehong won the ladies under-55 kilogram
event. In the boys under-60 kilogram category, Lebohang Motshoeneng from Abram Hlophe Dojo in Katlehong was a star performer and won the under-17 division. Thabo Malatjhie from Abram Hlophe Dojo continued to hoist Katlehong’s flag high when he won the men’s under-70 kilogram category. “In the Men’s and Women’s Open categories, Simphiwe Dlulani and Deneo Dlulani won their respective categories. The Dlulanis are husband and wife from the Eastern Cape. In the under-13 category for boys of 60 kilograms, Bradley Blaauw was crowned champion; and, in the boys under40 kilograms group, Liam Alexander won the 11-year-old category - both winners are from the Western Cape. In the girls’ category, Cassiby Smith, who is also from the Western Cape, was crowned the ultimate winner,” explained Shihan Sedoaba. Sedoaba is impressed at the support for the tournament and is optimistic about the future of the sport, saying that enormous karate development is taking place at grassroots level.
