Overcrowding in new hospital causes chaos Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za

OVERCROWDED: Many patients are waiting long periods to be treated at the new Natalspruit Hospital.

The new Natalspruit Hospital has been experiencing a steady rise in patient admissions, with many people avoiding primary health centres and flocking to the hospital instead. People are very excited about the new facility and everyone wants to be treated there; however, the hospital is unable to absorb the large influx of patients. In the maternity section there are not enough beds to cater for the steady stream of pregnant mothers coming to the hospital. Some of the women are forced to sit on chairs while waiting for others to deliver. In the maternity section there are 20 beds and the hospital is pleading with those giving birth normally to go to the clinics, saying that only those who have been referred or are in a critical condition need to come to the hospital. According to Natalspruit Hospital public relations officer Vuyo Sibani, community members are no longer using the primary healthcare facilities around their areas of

residence. He said there are many local clinics around Kathorus and three 24-hour clinics, namely Ramokonopi, Phola Park and J Dumane Clinic, that people can use. “The hospital caters mostly for secondary level patients. We are now using resources unnecessarily on people that can access treatment at the local clinics, especially the normal vagina birth. We are appealing to people to start at the clinic and to come to the hospital when they have been referred or if it is an emergency,” said Sibani. He added that there are long queues at the hospital. “We are not going to turn down the patients, but we are asking for their understanding and patience in a situation whereby there are critical patients that need the hospital’s attention.“ “The hospital is still offering the same services with only 21 extra beds; the members of staff are still the same. We have only changed the location with new machines, technology and beds,” said Sibani.

The inaugural Three-In-One Race has contributed to the revival of athletics within Kathorus, as 470 aspiring and professional athletes recently took part in one of the biggest races in the area. The Three-In-One Race is divided into three categories, namely a 400-metre race for children five years old and younger, a Street Mile Race for athletes 10 years old and

under, and a 6-kilometre race for those 11 years old and above. Speaking to tame TIMES, race chairperson Sifiso Ngcobo said he was impressed by the standard of the inaugural race and is optimistic that it will become the biggest race ever in Kathorus in the future. “We have professional athletes who took part in the competition. Winners in various races were given medals, Roots Butchery vouchers, beauty spa vouchers, T-shirts, vuvuzelas and squeeze bottles,” explained Ngcobo. In the Street Mile Race, Siyabonga Mbatha (10) was crowned the winner in the men’s category. “I am happy to be crowned as the race’s inaugural winner. This is the first time I have won a race and I hope there are still many races to be won in the near future. I wish the other contestants the best in their future endeavours,” said Siyabonga Mbatha. Nosipho Matha (9), the cousin of Siyabonga Mbatha, said she was well prepared for the competition. She was thrilled to be crowned the winner in the Street Mile Race women’s category, and Owami Xhosana was the winner of the 400 meters. Reitshepile Kgotle was the overall winner of the 6-kilometre race. He believes the race gave him the perfect platform to prepare for the Lesotho Marathon 21-kilometre race which will take place in December. “This is a good initiative from a grassroots level, and I am happy to take part in it. The event gives a perfect platform for athletic scouts and boarding schools to recruit aspiring athletes.” In the 6-kilometre race in the women’s category Makgotso Njubani was crowned the overall winner.

Public servants urged to deliver services to communities Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za

During the official opening of the new Natalspruit Hospital in Vosloorus, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said that public servants should be held accountable for delivering services to the public. “We can have good technology and state-of-the-art hospital buildings, but face-to- face service is the key. We want good quality healthcare and we are holding healthcare workers accountable for delivering services to the communities. We will also be conducting unannounced inspections at the hospital to check operations. The doctors and nurses should do their work and, if on duty, they must be found in their wards. Our people must be treated with dignity all the time,” said Makhura. He emphasised that health is a priority of the national government and a pillar of transformation, modernisation and industrialisation. Makhura said people should look after the hospital and not overcrowd it, but instead continue using the local clinics in their area. In addition he said, “We also revitalising the township economy, in that everything we do must help local people and entrepreneurs must benefit. We don’t want to import products from other countries. The linen in the hospital must be produced by local cooperatives. The local people should produce vegetables, sew uniforms and produce building materials, and as government we must buy from them,” explained Makhura. The new Natalspruit Hospital has created 4 950 local jobs during the construction phase and 16 local contractors were employed. The hospital has 821 beds and uses electronic files; lost files will be a thing of the past.

Airports Company South Africa 12 suspects arrested for hijacking rice truck greens Vosloorus parks Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za

Airports Company South Africa employees planted 150 indigenous trees in four parks around Vosloorus as part of sustainable environment management in Arbor Week. The parks that benefited are Moage Park, Umdlebe Park, Mahlathini Park and Lefokotsane Street Park. Airports Company South Africa partnered with Green Planet Revolution and the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to grow and beautify living spaces in Vosloorus. Colin Naidoo, Airports Company South Africa Acting Group Spokesperson said, “Arbor Week should help heighten South Africans’ awareness of the important role that trees play in the environment. Airports Company South Africa strives to work with strategic partners in the areas surrounding its airports, as well as some key national projects aimed at protecting the quality of our

environment. We are also committed to involving our employees in environmental projects that form a critical part of our Socio-Economic Development strategic focus areas.” Meanwhile, Sikhumbuzo Khowa, ward 46, a portfolio member of the Youth Centre said, “We appreciate the donations of trees from Airports Company South Africa - the trees we had at the parks were dead. Trees play a crucial role in our daily lives; they provide us with oxygen, shelter and shade for human beings and animals. The parks are now appealing for people who want to utilise them.” Arbor Week is a national initiative aimed at encouraging South Africans to plant indigenous trees as a practical and symbolic gesture of sustainable environmental management.

LEAVING A LEGACY: Airports Company South Africa employees planted trees in Moage Park in Vosloorus during Arbor Week.

A truck from Durban laden with a huge cargo of rice worth R650 000 was recently hijacked on the N3 near Vosloorus. The suspects drove the truck to Springs, where the cargo was offloaded. Ekurhuleni Metro Police Community Liaison Unit members then picked up the truck’s signal on the N12 near the Snake Road turn-off and one suspect was arrested, while the other one managed to flee and evade arrest. The real truck-driver was found in the cabin of the truck with his hands and

feet bound and his mouth taped. The arrested suspect meanwhile led the Metro Police to Nuffield Industrial area in Springs where eleven suspects, including two Pakistanis, were caught red-handed packing the rice into a storage place. A charge of being in possession of a stolen truck was laid against the suspect arrested in Benoni, while the eleven suspects arrested in Springs were charged with possession of stolen goods. They appeared in the Benoni and Springs Magistrate’s Courts respectively.

Bogus prophet on the loose Palesa Ramokgodi (27) and her friend from Ebasutwini section in Vosloorus Extension 1 thought all their problems were over when they came across a bogus prophet predicting their future. Both ladies were convinced by the prophet’s predictions after he touched their bodies with hands smeared in ointment. Unfortunately, however, the unsuspecting ladies’ belongings, including an S5 Samsung Galaxy cellphone, a BlackBerry cellphone, R1 270 cash, two perfumes worth R340 and household keys were stolen by the fake prophet. According to Ramokgodi, the two ladies were walking down their home street when they came across a man talking on a cellphone. Coming in the opposite direction was another man driving a green Nissan Sabri vehicle with tinted windows. “The man who was walking towards us stopped talking on his phone and greeted us. He told us that he was a prophet from Polokwane and touched our bodies. He started prophesying and told us about everything troubling our lives and we believed that he was a genuine prophet,” said Ramokgodi. She said the driver of the car also approached them asking for directions and

the prophet claimed that he knew where he was going. “The prophet demanded that we go to a quiet, secret place without people so that he could pray for us. I told him to use my home but he refused. He said we should go to the shops to buy juice that could cause concussion (muthi). The driver offered to accompany us, so we went to Chris Hani Mall and I left my friend inside the car with the two men and my belongings. I did not find the juice, but, to my surprise, on my way out of the shop I met my friend. She told me that they told her to go to the toilet and bring back her own urine to be used for ritual purposes. We were both surprised when their car was nowhere to be found and our belongings were missing,” said Ramokgodi. She opened a case at the Vosloorus Police Station. Captain Piet Rossouw, Communications officer of Vosloorus Police Station said, “We appeal to the community not to fall for people making false promises and fraudulent stories only to make them vulnerable to crime. People should refrain from trusting strangers on the streets. If other incidents such as these happen, they (crime victims) should report the perpetrators to the nearest police station.”

Help our karate stars to shine New sponsorship for

NEEDING SPONSORS: Young karate rising stars determined to make Gauteng proud in the Port Elizabeth karate tournament

Twenty two karate athletes from Gauteng Shorinkempo Karate Federation are desperate to lock horns with their counterparts in the karate tournament to be held in Port Elizabeth on 27 September. However, the dreams of these karate stars will not be realised if they do not obtain financial assistance or sponsorship to compete in the event. Speaking to tame TIMES, the senior instructor for Gauteng Shorinkempo Karate Federation, Thulani Sibisi, is optimistic about the Port Elizabeth Karate Style Tournament. “The Gauteng athletes who will be taking part in the tournament were recently crowned the overall winners in their respective divisions in the Shorinkempo International Tournament held at Thokoza Auditorium in May. A team of seven instructors who have already made arrangements to pay for their transport will accompany the athletes.” Each athlete is expected to pay a minimum of R1 200 for transport, and the event organisers are offering their guests accommodation for free. In total, they are expected to raise about R26 400 for all 22 athletes to take part in the upcoming competition. For more information about the Port Elizabeth Karate Style Tournament, contact Instructor Thulani Sibisi on: 083 599 5916 or deposit cash in the team’s Standard Bank savings account named “Kyokushin Karate” at: 425 703 533.

Young Stars FC outfits Lebo Mosolodi

Katlehong based business man Ephraim Mdaka has sponsored the Young Stars Football Club under-17 team with a new blue and white soccer kit. Mdaka believes that the initiative is part of ploughing back into the local community after they supported his shops over the years. “This is the beginning of a good working relationship we have started together with the club. I would like to salute the team founders and management for helping to keep our local children away from drugs by motivating them to take part in sport. If it were not for soccer, they might be indulging in drugs or criminal activities. The sponsorship is one way of ploughing back into the community,” explained

lebo@tametimes.co.za Mdaka. The team coach Wonder-boy Mtshali was excited about the sponsorship. “The sponsorship will really motivate my team because we had only two soccer outfits for three divisions namely, under-13, under-15 and under-17. That means two divisions had to hand over their outfits to the divisions without kits after completing their matches. It is a relief that we have a new soccer kit and now all our divisions have their own soccer outfits. We are also grateful that Mdaka donated food for the team when playing away games. We urge local business people to learn from this initiative,” concluded Mtshali.
