Police embark on a wild-goose chase Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za It started as a friendly visit between two 16-year-old friends from Free State and Vosloorus, and it ended up costing law-abiding taxpayers an arm and a leg. Police officers from three police stations, namely Vosloorus, Germiston and Katlehong, were called in to locate the whereabouts of the two missing teenagers while their parents spent the night at Katlehong Police Station. According to one of the mothers, who cannot be named in order to protect the identity of the girls, her daughter left Free State province to visit a friend in Vosloorus for a weekend. She said her daughter and her friend had known each other since childhood. “My daughter told me that her friend would be a disc jockey for the weekend. I gave her permission to leave on Friday and come back on Sunday. Her cellphone was off on Sunday and when I called her friend to find out whether she was on her way home she was also not answering her phone,” said the mother. She said she tried to call them the following day and her daughter’s phone was still off, while her friend’s phone rang unanswered. The mother then decided to go to Vosloorus to look for her daughter, bringing a photograph of her daughter’s friend wearing her school uniform. The mother first arrived at Germiston Police Station where they identified the school uniform as that of Phineas Xulu Secondary School in Vosloorus. She said she was transferred to Vosloorus Police Station and on her arrival the police officers managed to call the friend of

her daughter who told them that they were at Mavimbela section in Katlehong and gave them the address. “We left for Katlehong with the police officers and found out that the people staying at the address I was given knew nothing about them. I slept at Katlehong Police Station. I was then transferred to Vosloorus Police Station and we continued with our search and went to Phineas Xulu Secondary School with a photo. We were told that the friend last came to the school at the end of June. It was fortunate in that some of her class-mates knew where she was staying. We went to her place and found them relaxing. I am relieved because l thought my daughter was dead. It is a lesson to all parents not to allow their children to go anywhere,” said the mother. According to her daughter, she did not answer her phone because her battery was dead and she had no money for a return trip - although her mother claims that she gave her R350, which would include lunch on the way back home. The friend said she left to see her boyfriend in Springs and was hence not answering her phone because she was scared of what she would tell her parents. Sergeant Sibongile Mambane, Social Crime Prevention officer at Vosloorus Police Station said, “We have a challenge of teenagers lying to their parents. We are appealing to the parents to be vigilant and responsible by communicating with the parents or elder people of the area where their child is going to visit.” LESSONS LEARNED: Sergeant Sibongile Mambane with the two naughty teenagers

Ready to fly Mzansi flag in Manchester Lebo Mosolodi

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za Eleven-year-old Mfanelo Mabale from Vosloorus was recently chosen by the Chevrolet FC Name Swap Program in Manchester, United Kingdom to be a mascot for the English Premiership opening match at Manchester United on Saturday. The youngster left the country yesterday with his grandmother Nomfanelo Mcinga and their travelling chaperone Leepile Mothaolwa. He will head back to South Africa on 18 August after the opening game of the Red Devils. Speaking to tame TIMES, the chairperson of Bopang Kgotso Primary School John Makeke said that the Chevrolet team had visited their school at the beginning of the year and was impressed by the dribbling skills of Mabale, who is a star performer of the Bopang Kgotso Primary School soccer team. “As a result, the youngster was chosen to be a mascot for the Manchester United Football Club opening match for the English Premiership League on 16 August at the Old Trafford Stadium. Our school Sports Executive team and soccer team accompanied the youngster to OR Tambo Airport before flying to England,” said Makeke.

Mabale said he is excited that he will be escorting some of the football stars, including Wayne Rooney and others. “My grandmother is excited that she is flying to the United Kingdom because of my dribbling skills. She is looking forward to being wined and dined in the five-star Best Western Pinewood Hotel in Wilmslow in the UK and will be flying in an aeroplane for the first time,” said Mabale. His international role model is former Manchester United dribbling wizard Cristiano Ronaldo and locally it is Orlando Pirates’s industrious midfield kingpin Oupa “Ace” Manyisa. Mabale promised tame TIMES that, if given an opportunity to play against his peers in Manchester, he will mesmerise them with some of his silky Mzansi dribbling skills. DRIBBLER OF NOTE: Mfanelo Mabale will walk alongside some of the top English Premiership soccer stars at the opening of the English Premiership match at Old Trafford Stadium in the City of Manchester.
