Police march against crime Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za

It is a full three months since the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus, but no arrests have been made and Vosloorus Police Station has recorded about 18 murder cases since then. The escalating murder and rape cases in the area prompted the law enforcement agencies, which include SAPS, EMPD/Peace cops and CPF members to march against crime in Vosloorus. The march took place from Chris Hani Crossing Mall via Bierman Road where they turned right into MC Botha and headed straight to the Vosloorus Civic Centre, where talks and an awareness drive were conducted. Councillor Mthuthuzeli Siboza, MMC of Community Safety, was part of the march against crime. “We are creating awareness about the crime situation in Vosloorus. For the past three months 18 murder cases were reported, including the one for Senzo Meyiwa. Rape is a problem; we cannot allow our sisters, mothers and girls to be

forcefully raped by criminals. We appeal to the community to provide the police with information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators,” said Siboza. Major General Tebello Mosikili, Katlehong cluster commander, appealed to the community to work with the police in fighting crime. “We are accessible - the sooner the community take responsibility, we will build a crime-free area ensuring all people are safe. Team work between the stakeholders will help to combat crime.” She added that the majority of rape cases happened behind closed doors with no police visibility. Mosikili warned adult rape victims not to use rape as a payback. Mlandeli Buba, Vosloorus CPF chairperson said, “The challenge is that people don’t trust police officers with information. We are working on building trust and pleading with the community to report any nature of crime and learn to work with the police.”

TOP THREE: In the Ekurhuleni HIV/Aids High School debate Wendy Khumalo (middle) came first, Nkeye Choene from Thuto ke Maatla High School came second and Masindi Mathavha from Kempton Park came third. The sound of applause filled the air at Alberton Civic Centre Hall when Thuto Lesedi High School pupil Wendy Khumalo was named queen of public speaking for her performance on the topic of “Ekurhuleni has the highest HIV-prevalence rate. How do we step up the pace in the fight against HIV/AIDS, STIs and TB?” Wendy scooped the first prize following an intense debate involving 10 schools selected from across the Metro. An ecstatic Wendy said she was going to use the information she had gained throughout the debate competition to spread the word about issues of HIV and Aids to her peers. “There is a lot to be learned and understood about the prevalence of HIV/ Aids in Ekurhuleni,” she said. Ekurhuleni holds these debates annually

to promote accurate knowledge about HIV/ Aids and reproductive health. Addressing the learners, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development, Cllr Makhosazana Mabaso, said these debates serve as a platform to break the silence and tighten fists in the fight to reduce the rate of new HIV infections. “In a municipality with the second highest prevalence of people living with HIV in the country, our responsibility is to keep our young people talking about issues relating to the scourge of HIV and Aids. The more we talk about HIV/Aids, reproductive health, tuberculosis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, the more people will become knowledgeable and equipped to deal with them,” she said.

“Many patients visiting Ekurhuleni clinics have not been able to receive the medicine they require,” said Geoff Fenn, a DA Councillor in Ekurhuleni. “The continued drug stock-outs raise concern as easily available medicines such as aspirin, iron supplements, folic acid and amoxycillin have not been accessible to those in need, despite these drugs having multiple manufacturers,” said Fenn. He said the situation has left many patients having to go to privately owned pharmacies to purchase the drugs they require, while other patients who cannot afford to buy medicines have to go without, which has a serious impact on their health. “Stock-outs of these basics are inexcusable. Double rape leaves friends distraught Lebo Mosolodi

lebo@tametimes.co.za A male suspect in his early 20s allegedly entered a house in Vosloorus unnoticed, raped two young women at gunpoint, robbed them of their valuables and left the scene, leaving the victims traumatised. According to one victim, the brutal incident took place at midday at her parents’ house in Vosloorus. “I was with my young sister and my female friend when we saw a male suspect inside our house pointing at us with a gun.” “The suspect fastened our hands, making it impossible for us to walk without aid. He took us to separate rooms before he raped me and my friend in succession. My young sister

was fortunate not to be raped,” explained the victim. After raping both friends, the suspect took away two cellphones, two DVDs, a laptop and leather bag and left the house. The victim said the suspect was wearing glasses and covered his face with a scarf, making it difficult for his victims to recognise him. Vosloorus Police spokesperson Piet Rossouw confirmed the two rapes and the house robbery incident which took place in Vosloorus. “We are looking for any possible lead that could help in the arrest of the rape suspect. People who have information are welcome to inform Vosloorus police officers. Their names will not be divulged,” said Captain Rossouw.

Maria Matee’s dream of celebrating her 101st birthday finally came true after her story was published in a previous issue of the tame TIMES newspaper. The event was held at her house in Vosloorus Basothong Section over the weekend and attended by local political dignitaries, friends, family and neighbours. Her actual birthday was on 8 January, but due to financial constraints the celebration was temporarily postponed. Her daughter-in-law Sepati Motsoeneng highlighted to the newspaper the challenges they faced to make Granny Matee’s special day possible: “People read the story in the newspaper and sponsors finally came on board. This is an historical encounter because not many people reach three digits in their lifetime. I am grateful to the Vosloorus Police Station spokesperson Piet Rossouw for introducing us to the tame TIMES crew which made this day possible.” Ward 44 Councillor Sammy Mahoaladi cited that Botshabela Street in Vosloorus is blessed to have two grannies who are 101 years old, namely Maria Matee and her long-time friend Elizabeth Thobakgale. He urged the youth to respect their elders so that they can live and celebrate birthdays for many years to come. Ward 44 South African National Civic Organisation branch (SANCO) chairperson Ramalikoe Mphane said they initially thought Maria Matee had already passed on. “We wish her many more years to come. It is vital to take this opportunity to remind fellow South Africans not to abuse senior citizens. We will be visiting all our members who are 80 and above and we will soon unveil a veteran’s desk to tackle senior citizens’ challenges. We thankful for all our sponsors and Spar for donating the biggest birthday cake for Granny Matee.”
