First Gauteng mathematics lab launched in Vosloorus Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za
Mathematics is one of the subjects that some pupils consider a monster and difficult to absorb. In a mission to change their perception and to contribute towards improving mathematics skills, a state-ofthe art mathematics laboratory was officially opened at Khayelihle Primary School in Vosloorus, a first of its kind in the Gauteng province. The mathematics laboratory was created and installed by Neotel and NIIT for the community of Vosloorus. The ICT lab will enable pupils to learn and explore mathematical concepts and verify facts and theorems using technological tools and a geometer sketch pad. Speaking to tame TIMES, Mohamed Enver Surty, Deputy Minister of Basic Education who officially opened the lab said, “Literacy and numeracy is a challenge facing the country and the extraordinary state-of-the-art mathematics laboratory is an island of hope in the deprived schools. Mathematics is a critical subject that connects to several elements Khayelihle Primary School learners are demonstrating to the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Mohamed including technology, importance Enver Surty, Neotel and NIIT representatives on how the mathematics lab programmes work. of collaboration, analytical to problem solving and providing learners with the opportunity to access their own abilities. We thank Neotel and NIIT for investing in education.” Willie Mohlabai, Principal at Khayelihle Primary School said, “This is truly an exciting time for our school. The grade 4-7 learners are underperforming in mathematics and the lab will play a huge role in helping them to improve their numeracy skills and understanding of numbers. It will also expose our learners to technology and enhance their learning skills.” Sunil Joshi, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Neotel said, “We are very excited about the launch of our first maths lab in Gauteng. This lab will help learners to improve their academic performance, build numeracy skills and analytical thinking. There is a huge maths and science skills gap in schools across South Africa, and corporates need to start working together with the government to deploy similar initiatives that will ensure a brighter future for our children.”

Twenty-one top brilliant learners sail to finals Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za
It was a thrilling atmosphere as 60 learners battled it out in the semi-final stage of the McDonald’s Kathorus Most Brilliant Kid Competition, held recently at Chris Hani Crossing Mall. This is the only competition in Kathorus where brilliant pupils are competing against each other for the ultimate prize. Thabang Primary School teacher, Naomi Malohle said last year their school representatives were knocked out in the quarterfinal stage. However, this time they went all the way to the finals. “Five of our learners reached the final stage of the competition, which places us in a good position to win it this time around. Our team has put hard work into the competition’s preparation stages,” said Malohle. The competition final will be held on 2 November at Chris Hani Crossing Mall. One of the event judges, Raymond Thivhuli reminded the top 21 finalists, teachers and parents that it is going to be a battle of the fittest in the finals. “The rules are going to be strict, as always. Teachers and parents should be supportive of the top 21 finalists,” concluded Thivhuli. Actor and competition judge Thembalethu Ntuli praised all the learners for making it this far in the competition and would like to encourage the top 21 to stay calm and focussed and be prepared for the last phase.
Finalists are ready to compete in the third edition of the McDonald’s Kathorus Most Brilliant Kid Competition.
