Elspark break-in ends in fatal shoot out SHOT DEAD: One of the suspects was killed in the crossfire.

WHILE ESCAPING: The perpetrators crashed into the fence of a townhouse complex. by Bianca Mare’ Residents of a home in Petrel Road, Elspark, fell prey to opportunistic criminals, but some were apprehended and one died through the swift action of the local CPF, later joined by SAPS. At around 13:30 on 31 March, one of the residents in Petrel Road, Elspark, left her house to go to the local shopping centre. Shortly after she left, four males in a gold Nissan Sentra attempted to break into the home. Her sister then received a call from their security company stating that the house alarm had been triggered. She said that she was not really alarmed by this call as it

happened often, and thought it could be the cat or something minor that had triggered the alarm. Some of the neighbours, however, noticed that something strange was happening and immediately alerted the CPF, which responded immediately and found a burglary in progress. Witnesses on the scene said that the CPF responded swiftly to the radio alert and, as the perpetrators drove off, gave chase. The perpetrators retaliated by shooting at the CPF members, callously endangering the lives of innocent bystanders and civilians. According to SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Coetzer, the chase and shooting began in Petrel

Road and continued down Kingfisher Road into Alphaoord Road, where the perpetrators lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the fence of a townhouse complex. The four men then exited the car and fled into Constantia Road, still continuing to shoot at the members of the CPF. One of the suspects was shot and killed in the crossfire when members of the CPF, acting in self-defence, returned fire; while another was apprehended and two further suspects escaped and are still at large. The resident told the tame TIMES that when she returned home she was notified by one of the witnesses that there had been a break-in at her home. Constable Phooko, a

SAPS spokesperson at the crime scene at the burgled house, stated that a few goods were stolen, including a laptop, amplifier and handbag. When the suspects crashed into the palisade fence and escaped on foot, the stolen loot was abandoned with the car. The goods will be returned to the owner once the necessary evidence has been collected. Concerned residents and community members looked on anxiously as the SAPS detectives and the forensic team collected evidence and examined the body. One of the residents said that it was “like a movie scene,” but they commended the CPF for actively trying to assist with the elimination of crime in their community.

SPCA Adventure Dog Walk fundraiser On Saturday 28 March 2015, the SPCAs of Brakpan, Boksburg and Springs got together to host the 5th SPCA Adventure Dog Walk at the Boksburg Stadium. The weather was perfect for a walk. And fun, fun, fun was had by all. The event was a resounding success with more than 170 dogs and owners attending. There was a 5 km walk for dogs and owners – up hill, down dale, and through some seriously muddy patches, an obstacle course, lots of random prizes, sponsors who thoroughly spoiled the dogs and owners with give-aways. The crowd was also entertained with a wonderful demonstration by Pit Bulls - Sand, Thor, Riley and Machete - who are trained

as narcotics and sniffer RESCUE dogs, with MVD Tactical K9 Unit. The four pit bulls are owned and trained by Sharron, Josh and Rozlyn Francisco, who are also the rehabilitation and behaviour specialists for Underdogs SA. The sponsors included:Garden Pavilion Brakpan and Martin & Martin who were there representing the Beano brand. MSD Animal Health provided most of the goodiebag goodies. Efekto arrived with truckloads of give- aways. Gindra Motors brought sachets of water, lip-ice and sun screen. Through the public’s support an amount of R22,000 was raised for the SPCA on the day. Artists in School Festival

A SHOW TO REMEMBER: Petit High School learners and teachers after their performance In a society in which we work diligently to develop the greatest technological advances, we most often not only forget, but at times ignore and even undermine, that which truly brings out the spirit of the human race, the arts. The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) recognised the challenges faced by creative arts and the arts teachers at schools. They decided, in 2013, to introduce the Artists in School (AIS) program and approached the Sibikwa Arts Centre in Benoni to run the programme. The programme introduces skilled, professional artists into schools. These artists “work for and with schools in the making, receiving and interpreting of a wide range of arts experiences.” This year, again, artists were placed in 30

schools across Gauteng. Each artist was involved in developing a set of creative interventions in the school environment to support the implementation of the creative arts curriculum, as well as to transfer skills to arts and culture teachers. At the end of this programme, on 24 and 25 March, the schools gathered at the Sibikwa Arts Centre to showcase their talent and hard work. Tame TIMES visited the two-day Artists in School festival on 25 March. On the day the Petit High School from Northmead in Benoni performed their interpretation of homeless children versus a privileged life with constantly absent parents. The young performers interpreted their roles well, and although one or two forgot some of their lines, they recovered quickly and the show went on. And so the

day was filled with performances from schools as far afield as Vereeniging. The primary and high school learners also had their paintings, drawings and model structures up for display.

EDITOR

I received a Whatsapp message from someone who asked for signatories to a petition. Apparently the South African Law Reform Commission proposed that Good Friday and Christmas be removed from the South African calendar as public holidays. As a layman it truly concerns one when people who should understand the law and how it is being determined would attempt to change it as they wish. What do I mean by this? I’m sure that the Law Reform Society have people who studied law; meaning they understand basic jurisprudence. This means that they understand that the morals of a society are determined by the majority within that society. This is not in defiance of any other religious group or groupings, no, but because of the fact that I am baffled by the new concept taking shape within society – or maybe it is not so new, considering that for decades minorities enslaved the majority – that morals are being determined by a perception of political correctness and the hope not to offend anyone, even if that someone is a minority of one or a hundred versus millions, and even if that minority’s whims can be successfully challenged. This might be the reason that many young people do not wish to reason matters out anymore, but simply follow the most popular trend of the day, even if that trend is destroying their lives through one or the other addiction. If the morals of a society are being determined by the majority within that society, the celebration of the origin of such morals obviously follows. If one changes the rules as it pleases you, why should others have to obey them? Please note that this should not be taken as motivation to trample on the rights of minorities - everyone is fully entitled to his/her rights.

Is Eskom preparing for a national blackout?

Justus Abrams justus.abrams@tametimes.co.za

the Eskom grid without electricity. Areas that will be restored in a short space of time after such a catastrophe are those closest to the nuclear power station, Koeberg, the Hydro power stations

It has come to my attention that Eskom is running simulation exercises in preparation for a national blackout.

According to the source, the drill was to prepare the staff in the event of a national blackout. A blackout - unlike load shedding that can be scheduled - can happen suddenly and without any warning, leaving everyone on

in Kwazulu-Natal and the Sandton area in Gauteng. The older power stations dependent on the grid will not be able to be restored quickly. According to the source, should the blackout happen, areas in the Western Cape,

Kwazulu-Natal and Sandton in Gauteng will be the least affected and power can be restored to them in a minimum of two hours. The rest of the country, however, might be without power for six days or more. The reason for Sandton’s rapid rate of restoration, the source said they were told, is because of the area’s perfect load sharing profile - which means that the electricity usage in the area is stable and/ or can easily be predicted. Our source told us that although during the drill they were told that there is only a 0.01% chance of a national blackout happening, the concern was with the sudden need for a drill after they were assured little more than a month ago that a blackout is not a possibility. At the time of going to print the Eskom Media Desk could not be reached for comment, as calls went unanswered.

The Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa responded verbally in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to a letter written to him by the leader of the DA caucus in Parliament, Mmusi Maimane, in which Maimane said: “It has come to my attention that Eskom is running simulation exercises in preparation for a national blackout.” “This brings me to ask if you intentionally misled the nation, or were you concealing this information?” The Deputy President responded by saying that he knew nothing about such a drill at Eskom. It was reported in the media last week that Eskom was busy with a simulation codenamed “Exercise Breaking Dawn.”

The tame TIMES ascertained from a source inside Eskom that the electricity utility did in fact have a drill to prepare their staff in case of a national blackout and that the simulation took place on Monday 23 March.

The Songwriters Attic

Farrarmere

ENCOURAGING: Claudia Cox, fourth from left, surrounded by some of her co-performers. The Songwriters Attic was founded in 2007 by original songwriter, Claudia Cox. On Saturday 28 March, another successful event was hosted in Northmead, Benoni. Claudia had the following to say about the aims and history of the event: “I started the Songwriters Attic to create a platform for original songwriters to showcase their work and season themselves as performers.” “As an ‘unknown’ original songwriter I became frustrated composing songs and not having an outlet where my music could be heard. I had a deep desire to share my music and to gain some stage experience, but I was not given this platform. I had no desire to do cover songs of other artists, having written over 200 of my own songs.” “This motivated me to host an evening for original songwriters and see if there were any other musicians like me.” “Our first songwriters evening was a huge success, attracting over 20 original artists. I was amazed. As a result I decided to continue

to host these events over the past eight years with great success and have seen many of the artists gain experience from our platform and go on to do great things with their music. “Our stage is open to inexperienced and experienced musicians and song-writers. We encourage first-time performers to take a leap of faith. We are grateful that our audiences are always like-minded and supportive and have enjoyed eight years of interesting music and people. “With all the talent on offer, it is a wonderful ‘easy going’ event for everyone to enjoy and support the ‘undiscovered’ songwriters that are showcased. We are planning to expand into other areas soon and are excited about the amazing talent we will discover.” “The Songwriters Attic has hosted 60 events, including creating awareness for different charity organisations and will continue to support ‘the little guy’.” For more information, contact Claudia Cox on 082 966 9633.

Defying reality with Ster-Kinekor A successful Peke fun day

ADOPT A DOG: make a friend By Miguel Abrahams The world-wide phenomenon Divergent has finally brought along its highly anticipated sequel The Divergent Series: Insurgent; and Ster-Kinekor, the leading cinema chain in South Africa, gave fans the opportunity to watch the film before its nationwide release. Based upon Veronica Roth’s second novel Insurgent, which is the sequel to Divergent, comes this second instalment in the story of the dystopian world of secrets and wonder. Returning cast membersShailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet are joined by Naomi Watts and Oscarwinner Octavia Spencer. Picking up from where Tris and Four fought their way from the antagonist Jeanine Matthews, they now find themselves as fugitives seeking help from

the remaining factions - while trying to find answers to the world they live in. Director Robert Schwentke does not cut corners and keeps the essence of the book alive, by instilling on-screen meaning into the major themes of the story, the most prominent of which is Tris’s search for her identity and truth. Kate Winslet as the power-hungry Jeanine Matthews steals the show this time around as she completely mirrors the character’s insane determination as portrayed in the book. Although she has never played a villain before, she makes it look easy. Seeing the film in Ster-Kinekor 3D cinemas hyped up the simulation action scenes, giving the film that extra oomph. Where else can you get great moments at their very best? The Divergent Series: Insurgent is now playing at Ster-Kinekor theatres.

On Saturday 28 March, Pekingese Rescue SA had their first ever, very successful fun day. The day was a huge success. Almost 300 people attended, with volunteers from as far afield as Kwazulu-Natal coming to assist in making the day possible. Cakes, cupcakes, Peke rescue memorabilia, pet treats, doggy blankets, pet strollers, boerewors rolls and much more were sold. There were six different competitions and the Pekes and owners alike went out of their way to strut their stuff on the pet podium. First and second prizes were awarded in each category. The aim of the fundraiser was to raise enough money to continue the operations of the organisation. However, it was also to educate the public on the dangers and consequences of backyard breeding. The motto of Peke Rescue SA is “Adopt don’t Shop.” On the day, Pekes were up for adoption, and a substantial number of adoption forms were handed in. Home checks have already started for these applications.

Man murdered after tryst with prostitute On Friday 27 March at around 17:00 a man was murdered in the parking lot next to Mcdonalds on Rondebult road, in Boksburg. The man returned to his company vehicle from the dense bushes next to HyperCheckers where he went with a prostitute whose services he procured. According to Lieutenant Ngobese from Boksburg SAPS, four men approached him and allegedly robbed him of his cash and cell phone and stabbed him to death. Three suspects were arrested, but were later released. Lieutenant Ngobese said that the investigation is continuing. This murder came a day after another man was stabbed around the same area after engaging with the prostitutes in that area. In this instance the man made it to hospital alive. The Boksburg SAPS warn people to stay away from the prostitutes in the area and not to risk their lives by engaging in such risky and illegal transactions with these prostitutes.

Public Indecency Attempted Bribery of Police Officers On Sunday 22 March, at 06:50am, two females and one male were arrested next to the Bokkie Park and charged with public indecency. According to Lieutenant Ngobese, spokesperson for the Boksburg Police Station, on the morning of 22 March police were patrolling the area and came across a vehicle parked next to the Bokkie Park. On closer investigation they found a male and a female, both naked in the driver’s seat and another female exposing her naked upper body in the passenger seat of the vehicle. The police arrested the trio, charged them with public indecency and later released them on R 500 bail. They appeared in court on 23 March where the matter was postponed to 9 April.

TEENAGE SUICIDE - A CAUSE FOR CONCERN “People who commit suicide are cowards.” These are the words of those who are misinformed. In general the public has different views on this controversial topic. The fact of the matter is that debating about it will not stop suicide victims from calling the final shots. We should rather become educated on the topic, in order to try to help those who feel they have no other option available to them. Understanding suicide Suicide is not a state of mind that develops overnight. It is a lingering thought that grows, and as soon as the victim hits rock bottom, they see no other choice but to end it all. Most, although not all, suicidal individuals give warning signs. The best way to prevent suicide is to recognise these and to learn how to react to them. Reasons for teen suicides: [listcrux.com] • Bullying and peer pressure • Mental disorders • Sexual orientation • Domestic abuse • Drug and alcohol abuse • Divorce • Emotional neglect and stress • Sexual abuse • Cyber bullying

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has issued some key facts about teen suicide in South Africa: • People aged 15-29 are at the highest risk for suicide worldwide, including South Africa. • 9.5% of all teen deaths in South Africa are due to suicide. • A third of all hospital admissions for suicide attempts involve teens, but less than 1% of mental hospital beds in South Africa are for teens. • According to research done in South Africa, 23.6% of teens are struggling with feelings of hopelessness and sadness. • Teens are likely to be more impulsive when dealing with suicidal thoughts or behaviours. • According to research, more female than male teens commit suicide. • According to SA research, more than half of teens commit suicide by hanging. • SADAG research has indicated that 24% of teens have thought about committing suicide, and The National Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that 21.4% of teens have made one or more suicide attempts. Gunmen from the militant Islamist group al-Shabab have killed at least 15 people and taken students hostage at a university in north-eastern Kenya. Reports say 65 others were wounded when gunmen stormed the campus in Garissa. Troops are engaging the gunmen. More than 500 students were still unaccounted for, a minister said. The number of hostages is unclear. Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, said it was holding Christians hostage and freeing Muslims. Hostages from the two groups had been separated, and 15 of the Muslims had already been released, a spokesman for al-Shabab told the BBC. Source: BBC

As expected, the newly appointed host faced mounting criticism, including accusations of his being racist, sexist and anti-Semitic. By Will Ashton, 4/2/2015 In what is apparently not an April Fool’s Day joke, it was just announced Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig signed on to star in the Lifetime film A Deadly Adoption. Not only is the ink dried for the actors on the TV movie, they already shot the film in secret and it’s due to air in early summer. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news. The “dramatic thriller,” as it is described, follows a successful couple who care for a pregnant woman (Jessica Lowndes) in their house before they adopt her unborn child. It’s not long after this, however, when things go awry. The tone of A Deadly Adoption is supposedly campy and fun, something of a wink to the type of films the channel is known to make as they approach their 25th anniversary this summer. The two-hour TV movie is also executive produced by Ferrell, alongside Adam McKay and their Gary Sanchez Productions, with a teleplay by Andrew Steele, the co-creator of IFC’s The Spoils of Babylon, which Wiig and Ferrell also starred in. It is directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg, who helmed a variety of shorts on Ferrell and McKay’s Funny or Die. A Deadly Adoption also comes from Mar Vista Entertainment and National Picture Show.

Phobia of the month: Aphrilophobia – The fear of April Fool’s Day

In addition to writing, Steele also executive produced, as did Sharon Bordas, Fernando Szew and Jessica Elbaum. Coming from this past weekend’s Get Hard, Ferrell has a number of projects in the pipeline or in the works. He stars in James Franco’s Zeroville, and also soon reprises his role of Mugatu in Zoolander 2, set to be released next year. He also reunited with his The Other Guys star Mark Wahlberg in Daddy’s Home, which is currently in production. He also appeared earlier this week as Ron Burgandy at the Roast of Justin Bieber. In addition to this, some other projects his name came attached to include an untitled Shakespearean comedy, Russ & Roger Go Beyond and The House, just to name a few. Wiig, meanwhile, soon stars in Welcome to Me, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Nasty Baby, The Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards, Masterminds and The Martian. She also appears in the Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp miniseries and gives her voice to the R-rated animated film Sausage Party. She’ll also soon join her Bridesmaids director Paul Feig in his allfemale re-imagining of Ghostbusters. Source: thecelebritycafe.com
