Shack dwellers tired of being on waiting list Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za
Shack dwellers occupying stands at Eden Park West have long waited for their houses to be built and are concerned about first preference given to empty stands. The residents occupied their stands in 2012 and they allege that they were promised that their houses are going to be built soon but since then they have been living in shacks. The stands have ablution facilities and water taps built. Phumelele Nkani, a concerned resident said, “We are concerned that the houses are built on empty stands which are not occupied by people. We are still residing in shacks and they have forgotten about us. There are allegations that these newly built houses are built for other people not us. We are worried that they are not using the money allocated to build our houses. They have not even shown us a show
house; hence plans of houses built are not being approved by us as previously agreed. There is no development on our stands since we started occupying the area.” He added that they are also appealing for electricity in their stands. “We have electrical gadgets to use but the challenge is electricity. Winter is around the corner and we reside next to a river and electricity will help to warm ourselves,” said Nkani. Speaking to tame TIMES, Velile Gladstone Zide , Ward Councillor said, “We will build houses on all 860 stands in the area. We have started with the other stands that are not occupied by people to build houses for elderly, people with disabilities and orphans. The people who are occupying the stands will still have their houses built at any given time as they have occupied the stands, so that they cannot be taken
from them.”
