Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za Nqubela Primary School learners were thrilled by Miss Earth’s semi-finalist, Steffani Alexander, for selecting the school as the beneficiary for her greening project. Vegetable gardens is one of my projects; it is sustainable and will help to feed the learners and the community. The trees are also going to help in terms of providing oxygen and shade for the learners,” said Alexander.

She added that they will continue to maintain and monitor the garden. Alexander emphasised the importance of greening the environment and urged the school to sustain the garden. Pinky Mbele, Principal of Nqubela Primary School said, “We are happy to be visited by Miss Earth’s semi-finalist while we were least expecting it. She has inspired the learners about the importance of taking care of the environment and they are interested in maintaining the garden. The food gardening is essential to the school as it supplements the feeding scheme. The trees also reduce global warming and are good for the environment.” Alutho Mdleleni, a learner at the school said, “We appreciate the help we received from Miss Earth’s semi-finalist. The garden gives us food and trees provide us with shelter. We can bring the baby to the centre.” Shahieda Goliath, House mother of the Haven Baby Sanctuary said the learners did an amazing thing for the children at the centre. “Most of the children in the centre are abandoned by their teenage mothers. It was also an eye opener to the learners that they must not abandon their children. We appreciate the donations,” said Goliath. Haven Baby Sanctuary is a home for abandoned and voluntary placed babies.

As part of making a difference to the underprivileged children in the community, Umkhathizwe Primary School Soul Buddies donated second hand clothes to Rest Haven Baby Sanctuary in Rosettenville recently. The donations were given to the centre’s pawn shop so that they can be sold to buy the basic needs of the children. “We are making a difference to the communities by installing a culture of supporting the less fortunate in our learners. The abandoned children seek love and support and the learners had the opportunity to play with them,” said Madinane. Women have been, for a while, taking a back seat in the business sector, leaving all responsibility in the hands of the men. The society’s mindset is quickly changing as young ladies are now rolling their sleeves up in an endeavour to make an impact in the terrain previously reserved for their male colleagues. Yanga Maya (19) is gradually following the footsteps of ladies who are making a difference in business. She is currently studying a Business Administration Degree at Milpark Business School. “I am a first year student in Business Administration. My chosen career put me one foot into my ultimate objective of being a well established business owner. There are few business women in the industry, hence we need to change that if we are serious about being globally competitive,” explained Maya. Her short term goal is to set up an events management company because it has enormous business opportunities for young people. Maya said the beauty of working in events management is that there are various youth programs that are aimed at empowering. She complained that young people are facing enormous life challenges such as unemployment, crime, HIV\Aids and other various life’s challenges.

South African Milk Tartlets Crust Ingredients: - 80g castor sugar - 210g Stork Bake, room temperature - 330g flour - 2 eggs - A pinch of salt - 1kg of rice and tin foil

Method

Filling Ingredients: - 1litre milk - 180g sugar - 4 eggs - 90g corn flour - 90gflour - 5ml vanilla essence - 60g Stork Bake - Cinnamon for dusting

For miniature tarts, the pastry mixture can make thirty three 3cm diameter tartlets. Just remember to make smaller rice pouches when blind baking. The milk tart mixture can make 40 tartlets, thus to balance the mixtures out to get the same quantities from the tart and pastry mixture, take the pastry mixtures and multiply all ingredients by 1.3

Crust Method:

Filling Method:

1. Sift all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.

1) Heat the milk to boiling point. 2) Beat eggs and sugar until smooth and add corn flour and flour. Whisk until well combined. Add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, slowly tempering the two mixtures. Keep stirring while adding the milk and make sure it is added slowly so as to not scramble the eggs. 3) Place back on heat and stir until thickened. The longer you leave it on the heat, the thicker it will become. For a good milk tart, mixture should be a thick consistency like custard. 4) Take off the heat and add vanilla and Stork Bake, bake for 15min at 180ºC or until slightly firm. 5) Dust the baked milk tart with cinnamon. This will depend on how much you like cinnamon. Leave overnight in a fridge to set properly.

2. Rub in Stork Bake with the dry ingredients until well combined. Add one egg at a time and mix until the eggs are fully combined with the flour and margarine mixture. 3. Line a 23cm baking tin (approx 7cm in height), put in the freezer the mixture until the pastry is firm. 4. Bake at 180ºC for 10 - 20min. Before baking, take about 1kg of rice and cover it in the tin foil. Add this bag of rice into the centre of the pastry lined tin. This will keep the pastry from shrinking (which is blind baking). Remove from oven and allow cooling for about 1 hour.

Our different characters complement each other on air,” said Mohoje. The couple’s goal is to make sure that their show leaves a benchmark which would be emulated by future generations. They urged the youth to work hard in improving their academic qualifications.

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za

Chris Jase (40) has been preparing for the 2014 Comrades Marathon for some while, but his efforts could soon fade away due to lack of sponsorship. The father of three boys who is based in Katlehong was upbeat that he will spring some surprises owing to his readiness for the race to take place on 1 June at KwaZulu-Natal. Speaking to tame TIMES, Jase said they were disappointed to learn that this year their athletic club would not sponsor their travelling and accommodation fee as usual. “However, that should not stand before my dream of winning or salvaging some pride in the Comrade Marathon. I am dedicated to run the 90 kilometres downhill race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. I am asking for help in raising R1400 for transportation and accommodation funds. Transport departs this Saturday from Johannesburg to Durban,” explained Jase. He promised to dish out a five star performance especially in the veterans category. Jase has partaken in the Two Ocean, City too City, Soweto and Sarens Edenvale Marathon. “I have won the Orlando Athletics Marathon 10 and 21 kilometres races four times and Vodacom Marathon 42 kilometres. I also won Protea Glen 10 Kilometres and Jack Kipson 42 kilometres in veteran’s category,” explained Jase. People who would like to help Chris Jase could deposit any amount of cash at Standard Bank Account No 024716774 or phoned him at 071 5155420.

Chris Jase is the winner of Jack Kipson 42 kilometres marathon veterans category.

This initiative is a brainchild of the Katlehong based Shorim Kempo Company which invited over 600 athletes coming from various countries namely Ghana, Botswana, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and Holland to partake in the tournament. Sherin Kempo Director, Thulani Sibisi, said” Athletes will be competing in the 25kg, 35kg, 45kg and 55kg division for boys. In the men category, athletes will be competing in the 65kg, 75kg and open division. Women will be competing in the 55kg, 65kg and open division.” He said they have selected the 12 best athletes across the country to represent South Africa in this tournament. “In the team South Africa, Sibusiso Ndlela from KwaZulu-Natal will be defending his 55kg championship. We also have Rethabile Tshabalala from Gauteng who is also a defending champion for 65 kg division. In the women category, Mbali Msomi is a defending champion of the 65 kg. Tsheamo Mofokeng will be making her international debut, she is one of the most dedicated female karate athletes in our team who could spring some surprises on the opponents,” said Sibisi.
